          2022-23 budget

        • 1:1 Initiative:  Every student in the Bremerton School District has been assigned a Chromebook for home and school use. This “1:1” initiative is funded with the 2018 Technology Levy and a Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grant.   Students are also learning about good “Digital Citizenship” in all grades.  Learn more at www.BremertonSchools.org/Technology.

Jumpstart for Kindergarten: As a part of our community-wide plan to increase kindergarten readiness, we are offering a new tuition-free preschool program called Jumpstart to Kindergarten.  The program, held at View Ridge Elementary Arts Academy and Crownhill Elementary, is open to any child residing in our District who will enter kindergarten in our District the following year.  Learn more at www.BremertonSchools.org/Jumpstart.

AVID Schoolwide:  AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The mission of the AVID organization is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. We’ve offered the AVID elective in our District at Bremerton High School and Mountain View Middle Schools for many years – and those programs will continue. But AVID best practices are now utilized in all grade levels at all schools. We are committed to all students having access to and success with engaging, rigorous, and student-centered learning environments.  We want all students to develop critical thinking, literacy, and math skills using AVID’s research-based strategies and curriculum.

Raptor visitor management system: As a part of the District’s efforts to improve school safety and security, we have implemented a new visitor management system in all of our schools called Raptor. Visitors will be required to show a valid, government-issued ID when visiting our schools if they wish to go past the main office.  We have also added security fencing and remodeled our schools to create a single point of entry for all visitiors. Learn more at www.BremertonSchools.org/Raptor

School-based health clinics: As featured in the Kitsap Sun, Peninsula Community Health Services is operating a school-based health clinic on our Mountain View Middle School and Bremerton High School campuses. The clinic provides medical, mental health and chemical dependency services for all students and staff in our District. We hope this on-site clinic will make it easier for students to get the healthcare they need. We’ll be sending out more information on this clinic in the very near future.  Learn more at www.BremertonSchools.org/Clinic

“We are Kindergarten Ready” learning series:  We want to support parents in preparing their students for kindergarten. “We are Kindergarten Ready” learning series includes physical learning materials and videos that parents can use to help their child get “kindergarten-ready!” The program provides parents ideas for incorporating strategies and practices into their routines to build foundational readiness in literacy, math, and social (SEL) skills.

        Olympia, Washington

Olympia is the capital of the US state of Washington, as well as the capital and largest city of Thurston County. [6] [7] It is 60 miles (100 km) southwest of the state’s most populous city, Seattle, and is the cultural center of the southern Puget Sound region.

European settlers claimed the area in 1846, followed by the Treaty of Medicine in 1854, followed by the Olympic Treaty in 1856. Olympia was incorporated as a city on January 28, 1859year and as a city in 1882 . It had a population of 55,605 at the time of the 2020 Census, [3] making it the state’s 23rd largest city. Olympia is bordered by Lacey to the east and Tumwater to the south.

The territory of Olympia has been inhabited for thousands of years by Lushutseed-speaking peoples known as the Stoeh-Chass (or Stoehchas, later incorporated into the island tribe of the Squaxin after the treaty). Other Native Americans regularly visited Budd Inlet Chapter and Steh Chass, including other Squaxin ancestral tribes, as well as the Nisqually, Puyallup, Chehali, Sukwamish, and Duwamish. The first recorded Europeans arrived in Olympia in 1792 year. Peter Puget and a team from the British Vancouver Expedition say they explored the site, but none of them recorded any encounters with the local indigenous population. In 1846, Edmund Sylvester and Levi Lathrop Smith jointly claimed the land that is now the center of Olympia. In 1851, the U.S. Congress established the Puget Sound Customs District for the Washington Territory, and Olympia became the home of the Customs House. Its population has steadily increased with immigrants from the Oregon Trail. In 1850, the city received the name Olympia at the suggestion of a local resident, Colonel Isaac N. Eby [9] due to its view of the Olympic Mountains to the northwest. The area began to be served by a small steamboat fleet known as the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet.

For two days, December 24–26, 1854, Governor Isaac I. Stevens negotiated the treaty of Medicine Creek with representatives of the Nisqually, Puyallup, Squoxin, Steh’Chass, Noo Seh Chatl, Squiy Aitl tribes. , T’Pixin. tribes Sah-Kheh-Va-Mish and S’Hotl-Ma-Mish. The Stevens Treaty provided for the preservation of the rights of indigenous peoples to fish, hunt, gather and other rights. It also included a section that, at least as interpreted by United States officials, required Native American signatories to move to one of three reservations. This will effectively force the people of Nisqually to give up their primary farming and living space. One of the Nisqually leaders, Chief Lesky, outraged, refused to relinquish ownership of this land and instead fought for his people’s right to their territory, which provoked the outbreak of the Puget Sound War. The war ended with the execution of Lesha.

In 1896, Olympia became home to the Olympia Brewing Company, which brewed Olympia until 2003.

The 1949 Olympia earthquake damaged many historic buildings beyond repair and they were demolished. Parts of the city were also hit by earthquakes in 1965 and 2001.
