Parent: This school is amazing – the teachers, administrators, and students. My son has been attending for 6 years. It is very structured – and can seem overwhelming (imagine being spoken to all day in a foreign language)! But, my son is happy. I think the teachers have high expectations, but are very nurturing and they provide additional help if the student is struggling academically (I know from personal experience). I am so impressed by the dedication of the teachers – they are always available and willing to communicate and partner on plans specific to individual students. With any immersion program, the first couple years are a struggle, as students may fall behind mainstream schools – however, by 5th grade, my son is scoring well above average. Senior: For the most part, I enjoyed my time at Irondale. The academics were great, I was able to take a lot of rigorous courses and even finished my senior year with an associates degree. However, the administration did not seem to care about its students. Whenever there was a racial “incident”, the school would try to silence what happened and move on. This happened on many occasions because of the schools demographics and it was mentally draining for many of the poc students who wanted something to change. Apart from the issues caused by administration, the culture was very good. For the most part people didn’t have issues with each other. There was not really any cliques and most people managed to get along with each other despite their backgrounds. Middle School Student: I am a student in 6th grade as I’m writing this and I recommend this school but I would start early so if your coming here at my age knowing no german than thats may be a bad idea because it a new language were fluent in and you wouldn’t know one word. If you like a Waldorf style of school this is probably not the school for you as here we do do tests and focus on academics but do events as in service learning, which I’m in, today we went to an event called WE DAY a empowerment non-profit organization to make the world better with our youth. Our school is very very very accepting of all cultures and backgrounds. If your happy with who you are then were fine with it. The one thing is are school is not that diverse. …. were mostly white….. but where ale exerting and racism is not tolerated at our school. We encourage to feel welcome. Junior: Blaine High School offered a great contrast to the small, private middle school I attended previously. The teachers are, for the most part, great. They are always there to help their students, and they want to see everyone thrive both academically and socially. I knew that there were always resources to help me if I needed it, and academics were never a cause of significant stress.
On the other hand, I think that Blaine High School could be improved by changing some of its curriculums. I found the mathematics curriculum notably frustrating because it moved at such a slow pace. Even in an honors class, I found the classwork tedious and drawn-out because it moved so slow. I wish that there were more options for fast-paced classes that kept me more engaged and challenged. I also think that there was a lot of wasted time in classes through playing irrelevant games and doing seemingly random activities. Senior: It’s such an excellent school with a good supportive environment to learn in. It’s a special place because the arts classes are specialized and catered to your specific track. I’m in the musical theatre track and so far I have learned something new every single year! Whether it’s viewpoints, grid work, character development, or even just playing theatre games there is always something to learn. The academics are challenging especially if you’re taking AP or Advanced classes. My most challenging class was AP Biology, it made me work hard and take time to really develop an understanding of the material, science is my favorite subject! The only downside to SPCPA is that we have no sports and a very limited selection of student run clubs. If you care about dances and sports and the “traditional” high school experience, it may not be the school for you. Senior: Attended SLP for all 12 years of my education and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. There were so many athletic and extra-curricular activities along with plenty of leadership opportunities available at all times. There were so many people with so many backgrounds present that you could meet and befriend it was amazing. All of this really built a sense of community and while you definitely were able to find your own little group and do your own thing, it was also really easy to feel the support from everybody else in the building at all times. Obviously not without it’s issues. Could definitely do better with the handling and support of mental health within the school. Alum: Math- the teacher is delightful, just be prepared to listen to her talk about her whole life. her teaching style is a little off-beat but it was very adaptable.
English- i won’t name names but one of the teachers is a bit self-righteous and lowkey a misogynist even if he poses himself as a woke elder of the gay community. then there’s the other english teacher who is delightful, and the assignments prepared me for the english composition classes i’d take in college.
Humanities- all of the teachers are so cool! their teaching styles and lesson subjects were very engaging.
science- theyre both weird teachers, but the chem teacher knows what he’s talking about.
(studio) art- once you’re past the foundations classes, the world is your oyster. i don’t know how the school is going to move on without sandy, but her classes changed my life. Our school is very very very accepting of all cultures and backgrounds. If your happy with who you are then were fine with it. Parent: My kids are going to Nasha Shkola for a number of years. They excel in English, and Russian, and math and doing great in other subjects. We (parents) wouldn’t be able to bring them even close such a high level in either Russian (as we don’t have time for this) or English (as we are not native speakers). Our kids are truly bi-lingual, which, in our experience, rarely happens in Russian speaking families. And in other academic disciplines kids are doing better than in regular public school. We also like that the school is small and virtually everyone knows everyone (kids, teachers, parents, and staff). The school is also organizes a few events during academic year. Our only issue was long commute time (we live far away) and transportation in general (driving every day was exhaustive and bus company was not that good). This improved significantly this year. Daniel Ryan Johnson (born August 10, 1979 in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, USA) is a contract baseball player with the Tampa Bay Rays from Major League Baseball.

He played from 2005 to 2015 in Major League Baseball except for the 2009 season in Japan as a first baseman. He tried in 2016 to extend his career in a completely different role, that of a pitcher with a butterfly ball.

Players mostly reservists, he had a notable home run hit for the Tampa Bay Rays on September 28, 2011, in 9 – innings in the game, the last of the 2011 season, against the New York Yankees. In that home room, the score was tied 7-7 in a game that saw the Yankees lead 7-0 and forced overtime in which the Rays clinched a playoff final qualifier.

Career

After attending Blaine High School in Blaine, Minnesota, Dan Johnson went on to graduate school at Butler University and then at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he wore the colors of the Nebraska corn stick from 2000 to 2001.

He was drafted on June 5, 2001 by the Oakland Athletics in the seventh round of selection and received a bonus of $32,500 when he signed his first professional contract on June 18, 2001.

Johnson spent four seasons in the minor leagues before making his major league debut for Oakland on May 27, 2005. He was transferred to the Tampa Bay Rays on April 18, 2008 via waiver. On September 9, 2008, he was recalled from the minor leagues but failed to arrive in Boston in time to start the game between the Rays and Red Sox. Brought as an alternate hitter in the ninth inning with his team one point behind and star pitcher Jonathan Papelbon to the mound for Boston, Johnson hits a home run that allows the Rays to force extra innings. Tampa Bay wins the game 5-4 en route to Division I, ahead of the Red Sox.

Primarily used in Triple-A in 2008 under Rays organization, Johnson sold to Japanese club Yokohama BayStars. He signed a $1.4 million contract for the season with the BayStars.

A free agent at the end of the 2009 season, Johnson returned to the Rays with a $500,000 season commitment on January 11, 2010. On December 6, 2010, he extended his contract for one season.

Tampa Bay first goal reservist, Johnson, who only scored 119 in 2011points, became famous for the fans Race in the last game of the season on September 28, when he managed to make another dramatic shooting circle. That night, the Tampa team closed a 0-7 deficit to win 8-7 in extra innings over the New York Yankees, a victory that put them ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the standings and went in a pinch of in the playoffs. In February 2012, Johnson joined the Chicago White Sox. He only played 14 games in 2012 for the White Sox but had 8 hits, including 3 homers, for a .364 batting average and hit 6 points in addition to hitting 9 walks.

For the Cleveland Indians in 2013, Johnson only appears in three games.

On November 15, 2013, he signed a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. After a year and 15 games in Toronto, he is invited to the 2015 spring training in Houston. They traded him to the Cincinnati Reds on March 26, 2015, before the opener of the season, for a player to be named at a later date. Assigned to the minor leagues, he hits just 3 hits in 40 batting appearances for .069average watt with the Louisville bats. Released by Cincinnati, he joined the Saint-Louis Cardinals on May 4, 2015 and played 12 games with them, ending 2015 with an average of just 158 in 27 games.

Johnson returns to the Tampa Bay Rays on March 5, 2016, but this time to try to revive his career in a completely different role: the butterfly ball pitcher.
