Public Schools

In Parish Public Schools East Baton Rouge operates public schools within city limits.

The Baton Rouge area includes 12 public school districts – Ascension, Baker, Central Community, Baton Rouge East, Feliciana East, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, Baton Rouge West, Feliciana West, and Zachary. School districts in the region provide opportunities for advanced learning through programs for gifted and academic students, as well as individual programs in music, visual arts and drama. In addition, four of the top ten counties in the state are located in the metropolitan area.

East Baton Rouge Parish Public Schools, the city’s school district, is one of the area’s largest school districts. It contains about 90 separate schools: 56 elementary schools, 16 middle schools and 18 high schools.

Louisiana State University operates the Louisiana State University Laboratory School, K-12 School. Also, Southern University operates the Southern University Laboratory, the K-12 School.

Colleges and Universities

Louisiana State University and the College of Agriculture and Mechanics, commonly known as Louisiana State University or LSU, is a coeducational public university that is the main campus of the Louisiana State University system. LSU includes nine senior colleges and three schools, as well as specialized centers, departments, institutes, and offices. The enrollment is over 30,000 students and there are 1,300 permanent faculty members. LSU is also one of twenty-one US universities recognized as a land grant, maritime endowment and space grant research center. LSU is the oldest public university and Louisiana’s most versatile university.

Southern University and A&M College, commonly known as Southern University, a historical black college founded in 1879 by P. B. S. Pinchback, T. T. Allen, and Henry Demas. The southern one became the land plot of the school in 1890, an agricultural and mechanical department was created. The university offers programs of study from associate to doctoral and professional degrees. Southern University is Louisiana’s second oldest public university.

Baton Rouge College is an open admission, two-year post-secondary public community college founded on June 28, 1995, and settled permanently in 1998. The 60-acre (240,000 m 2 ) campus consists of five major buildings: the Governors Building, Louisiana Building, Cypress Building, Bienvenue Building (student center), and Magnolia Library Building. The college currently has over 6,000 students. Educational offerings include courses and programs leading to the transfer of credits, certificates and associate degrees.
