how international ratings are arranged and what place Russia occupies in them

And what places does Russia occupy in them

Timur Khairutdinov

Graduated from a school of natural sciences

Author’s profile

Russia has repeatedly been ranked at the top of international educational rankings.

For example, in 2019 our country ranked sixth in the TIMSS ranking. In general, there are three largest ratings that assess the knowledge of schoolchildren in basic disciplines around the world: PISA, PIRLS and TIMSS. All of them are arranged in a similar way: once every few years, schoolchildren are tested, which allows you to determine the level of their knowledge. Schools selected by the Ministry of Education participate in such testing.

TIMSS and PIRLS are conducted by the International Association for Educational Achievement – IEA. Mathematics and science tests for the TIMSS rating are taken by students in the fourth and eighth grades. It is held every four years, this allows you to evaluate the progress of the same students after some time. Only fourth graders take the PIRLS test. It helps to compare the quality of reading among schoolchildren from different countries – how well they understand what they read – and assess their opportunities in future learning.

2019 TIMSS School Education Ranking

PISA Ranking is a project of the Economic Cooperation Organization. Like TIMSS, PISA allows you to assess the knowledge of schoolchildren in mathematics and the natural sciences, however, fifteen-year-old teenagers participate in testing, regardless of what grade they are in. In most countries of the world, at this age, schoolchildren complete compulsory education, usually nine grades.

PISA School Education Ranking 2018

Schoolchildren from which countries achieve the highest scores

Rankings have been compiled over the past twenty years. From 40 to 65 countries participate in the programs already mentioned. Traditionally, Asian countries show the highest results in TIMSS and PISA: Singapore, the Republic of Korea, China, Hong Kong and Japan. In Europe, Switzerland and Norway have good performance. At the bottom of the rankings are the countries of Africa and the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia, Ghana and Jordan.

A similar situation persists in studies that test reading comprehension. In the latest PIRLS ranking for 2016, Singapore ranked first with an average score of 588 points. Also in the lead are Norway – 568 points, Ireland – 567 points, Sweden – 559 points.

The study also shows that in all countries girls read and understand text better than boys. The biggest difference is in the United Arab Emirates, where schoolchildren scored 454 points and schoolgirls 483.

What are the results of the Russians

As a rule, Russian students perform better in science subjects than in mathematics. In the TIMSS 2019 ranking, Russia ranked third in natural sciences and sixth in mathematics. In the 2011 PIRLS Reading Quality Study, Russian students scored low and ranked 36th out of 46. Since then, Russians have not participated in the latest study.

According to the results of research, Russians occupy different places. For example, in the TIMSS 2019 ranking, Russia ranked sixth in mathematics, while in the PISA 2018 monitoring it was only in 30th place out of 80.

According to the HSE study, such different results can be explained by the fact that in the TIMSS and PISA different countries are involved. Unlike TIMSS, PISA is also studying the situation in European countries that bypass Russia in the ranking: Ireland, Spain and Luxembourg.

Where does Russia rank in international rankings of school educationPDF, 689 KB

In addition, PISA and TIMSS test different skills of schoolchildren. While TIMSS assesses students’ academic skills and knowledge of the school curriculum, PISA focuses on the application of knowledge in real life. According to research, it is difficult for Russian schoolchildren to apply knowledge in practice. At the same time, they solve specific tasks without any problems, in which it is necessary to act “according to the pattern”.

Rosneft implements a system of continuing education “school – university – enterprise”

Personnel decide everything – this Soviet slogan is still extremely relevant today. But frames do not appear out of thin air. Cadres need to grow and educate. And you need to do this, as they say, “from the cradle.” Rosneft has long recognized this, and the practice of supporting the training of potential employees from school age is already bearing fruit.

The preparation of a highly qualified personnel reserve, according to Rosneft, is a major task. Recently, the modern oil and gas industry has turned into a technological production that requires fundamental knowledge. For these purposes, Rosneft has been implementing a corporate system of continuous education “school – university – enterprise” for several years now. Its main task is career guidance and enhanced preparation of schoolchildren for admission to specialized technical universities of the country. This contributes to the formation of a personnel reserve and ensures a constant influx of well-trained young specialists into the oil company.

Rosneft classes are the first step in the educational system. On September 1, 2022, Rosneft opened new specialized classes in the city of Gubkinsky (YaNAO) and Vladivostok (Primorsky Krai). In total, 113 Rosneft classes in 58 schools opened their doors on Knowledge Day in 21 regions of the country. About 2.5 thousand schoolchildren started classes within the framework of the corporate educational project in the new academic year.

The training program in Rosneft Classes is aimed at providing schoolchildren with a high-quality general secondary education with in-depth study of mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer science.

As noted in Rosneft, the company creates specialized classes in the regions of its production activity on the basis of the best educational institutions.

Rosneft together with the Talent and Success Educational Foundation, the National Intellectual Development Foundation, the Sirius Presidential Lyceum and the University Gymnasium of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov annually organizes educational programs for talented students. They are aimed at developing specialized knowledge in the field of applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and programming among schoolchildren. The guys take part in the development of IT projects on topics relevant to the oil company, and are engaged in computer modeling.

An integral part of the pre-university training of students is the advanced training of teachers. Rosneft and Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov are implementing a joint project on distance learning for teachers, which was attended by about 300 teachers from oil industry partner schools. The project also involves teachers of specialized subjects from universities that are partners of Rosneft, which helps to increase the level of competence of teachers and, on the whole, has a positive effect on the development of the education system in the regions of Russia.

Thanks to such enhanced training, Rosneft Classes students regularly become winners of prestigious international and all-Russian competitions, school competitions in chemistry, mathematics, biology and ecology, defend research projects and win educational grants.

Last academic year, 975 students of Rosneft Classes became winners and prize-winners of Olympiads at various levels. In addition to teaching basic school subjects in advanced programs, Rosneft Classes conducts career guidance on an ongoing basis to familiarize students with production.

The effectiveness of the pre-university training project is confirmed by the employment of graduates of the Rosneft-classes at the enterprises of the oil company. Since 2012, over 1,000 graduates of specialized classes have joined the teams of 70 Rosneft subsidiaries.

In addition to the educational process for the students of Rosneft-classes, oilmen organize extra-curricular activities. Sightseeing tours to museums of enterprises and production facilities are held, conferences, team building trainings, patriotic actions and various environmental initiatives are held.

In addition to supporting schools, Rosneft regularly organizes extra-curricular and educational leisure activities for schoolchildren from different parts of the country before the start of the school year. Rosneft enterprises provide comprehensive support not only to educational institutions, but also to children with a difficult fate.

For example, employees of the Komsomolsk Oil Refinery helped children from the sponsored orphanage No. 20 in the village of Khurba (Khabarovsk Territory) get ready for school. The children received everything they needed for the new school year: stationery, notebooks, kits for children’s creativity and briefcases.

In St. Petersburg, Rosneft organized a concert on the stage of the D.D. Shostakovich for children from the DPR and LPR, as well as for pupils of specialized institutions, boarding schools, large and low-income families. More than 1000 children heard the performance of the Youth Chamber Orchestra conducted by Yaroslav Zaboyarkin. The soloists performed the fairy tale “Peter and the Wolf” by Sergei Prokofiev, as well as melodies from popular cartoons.

With the support of RN-Uvatneftegaz at the school in the village of Vinzili, Tyumen Region, where more than 1900 children, a new computer class is opening. In total, in recent years, under the charity program, the company has opened five classes in the region, where schoolchildren can learn programming and robotics.

With the support of RN-Nyaganneftegaz, 17 schools and kindergartens in the city of Nyagan were renovated, and funds were allocated to prepare socially significant facilities for the new academic year. The heat and water supply system has been completely updated in secondary school No. 6. Cosmetic repairs of building facades and classrooms have been completed in primary schools of the city. Also, thanks to the support of oil workers, fire safety measures have been strengthened in several schools. The territory of the schools is equipped with 24-hour video surveillance systems and automatic gates. Stairs and walking paths have been built for the convenience of schoolchildren. Large-scale works on the improvement of the adjacent territory have been carried out.

Employees of RN-Nyaganneftegaz took part in the charitable volunteer action “Get Your Child to School”. Funds raised by employees are used to purchase stationery, creative kits, school and seasonal clothing, and orthopedic backpacks for children with disabilities. The main recipients of charitable assistance for the Day of Knowledge were disabled children living in Nyagan. All kits have been tailored to the individual needs of each child.

Targeted assistance to special children has become a good tradition for the company’s employees. Oil workers annually participate in the New Year’s event “Christmas Tree of Wishes” and are permanent volunteers of charitable and social events. The enterprise does not leave unattended children from low-income families, from among the small indigenous peoples of the North, who live in Nyagan and in the Oktyabrsky district of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Yugra.

While investing in school and student education, Rosneft rightly expects a return. And these expectations are justified. The stake on advanced scientific achievements helps to take the lead in the development of the Earth’s interior.

In the oil and gas industry, one of the key values is the correct interpretation of geological data, including when conducting geophysical surveys. Specialists from RN-BashNIPIneft and the Tyumen Oil Research Center have developed the RN-PETROLOG software package for this purpose. The software is based on algorithms that meet the current trends in digital petrophysics and data mining. In particular, the system makes it possible to evaluate the quality of the initial data of geophysical surveys of wells (GIS), to perform multi-well data pre-processing in automated and manual modes. The IT solution allows you to systematically store geological and geophysical information, including the results of the study of core material and the interpretation of well logging data, well test results, and much more.

RN-PETROLOG is primarily intended for specialists in the field of petrophysics. At the same time, the software package may be of interest to specialists in related disciplines. Petrophysical software is often used by geologists for their own purposes. This is not surprising, because here, as a rule, the maximum amount of geological and geophysical information is accumulated, which is rare for any other software,” notes Alexei Astafiev, Chief Specialist of the Geophysical Projects Development Department of RN-BashNIPIneft.

The unique features of RN-PETROLOG include a graphical interface for building a workflow and integration into the corporate line of science-intensive software. Thanks to data exchange with Rosneft software products, a team of specialists will be able to work together on the project in real time.

RN‑BashNIPIneft specialists also have a development for interpreting hydrodynamic studies of wells. The software package is called “RN-VEGA”. The new IT development includes all modern interpretation methods, as well as machine learning-based tools that allow you to automate routine operations.

Interpretation of hydrodynamic studies of wells is a complex task that requires advanced developments in the field of mathematical modeling of reservoir systems. With the help of the RN-VEGA complex, specialists can perform all stages of analysis, including determining the most important properties of an underground reservoir, such as reservoir pressure and permeability. Also, the results obtained make it possible to more accurately predict the operation of the well after geological and technological measures and make operational decisions when managing the development of the field.
