Careers

Why are you called the “Russian” School of Math?

The “Russian” comes from our approach – which is based on elite math schools in the former Soviet Union, adapted to the U. S. environment. According to Russian tradition – the study of mathematics is the pre-eminent tool of mental development. We teach math in a way that not only builds mathematical excellence, but also develops intellect and character.

Where does your curriculum come from?

We offer one continuous curriculum, from K-12. Our curriculum and methodology, perfected over 20 years by our team of gifted academics, is inspired by elite mathematical schools in the former Soviet Union, adapted for the American educational environment.

How big are your classes? What is the teacher to student ratio?

Our average class size is 12, and with three levels per grade we’re able to ensure that each child is placed in a class that is appropriately challenging. Classrooms are an essential part of our methodology and curriculum as the environment enables students to verbalize and debate their ideas and exposes them to different ways of thinking.

How long are your classes? Can an elementary school child sit that long?

Our class-times vary depending on a child’s age. Starting anywhere from 1.5 hours for kindergarteners to 2-4 hours in high school. In the younger grades, we regularly mix activities and work with manipulatives to keep students engaged.

How much homework should I expect?

The goal of homework is to reinforce what was taught in class. Our teachers assign just enough to strengthen the skills developed in class. Homework is an excellent tool for you to gauge your child’s learning. It should take approximately half the length of your child’s lesson to complete. If the homework takes an unreasonably long or short amount of time, that may be a red flag indicating that your child is not in an appropriate level.

Who are your teachers?

All of our teachers have a background in mathematics or a related field and have a passion for the subject. They also go through extensive training to teach according to our specific methodology and curriculum.

What is the best age to join?

It takes many years to develop a deep mathematical foundation as well as the type of mindset we focus on building. With mathematics, as with a language or a sport, the earlier a child starts the better. Our students begin to reason with abstract concepts in elementary school, and by middle school they are not only familiar with essential elements of algebra but can easily apply them in problem solving.

What is your tuition?

Please submit the tuition request form above and we will automatically email you a pdf with our tuition costs by grade.

Is your program right for my child?

We have designed multiple levels for every grade specifically to be able to serve each child’s development based on his or her knowledge and ability. We recommend scheduling a free evaluation, as these sessions enable us to get a sense of each child’s needs and recommend a class that is best suited to him or her.

Will your program confuse my child in school?

The concepts that we cover are fundamental and we study them in depth. Children see concepts from a variety of different angles. This doesn’t lead to confusion but rather empowers students by deepening their understanding. Since our curriculum is generally ahead of public school, children will often first learn concepts at RSM. Once they master them, we find they can adapt to any school format.

Prologue

Henry Schumer turned off the engine and the police car rolled noiselessly up to the porch. Lights were on in the house. The patrolman grinned: after all, he was right not to trust his daughter. She said that she would spend the night with a friend, and she herself arranged gatherings at home. Well, if with girls, otherwise…

He got out of the car, covering the top of his fair-haired head with his hand, and only outside put on his cap. Due to his high growth, Henry kept banging his head against the doorways, and you can’t count how many times he kissed his forehead as he got out of the car. However, it didn’t take long to toil in patrols: Schumer served as a deputy sheriff for the second year and believed that the position of chief was in his pocket. It’s time for the old man to rest.

The door was successfully closed without too much noise. Stepping springily over the step, the policeman went up to the porch and listened. Silence. They must be smoking in the kitchen. Maybe it’s better to go through the back door and scare the girls as you should, so that it would be disrespectful? Meggie’s secretiveness was beginning to get on her nerves: almost eighteen years old, and the devil knows what was going on in her head. I used to study excellently, but in recent years there have been not enough stars from the sky. We should take it seriously.

The policeman entered the house and slammed the door behind him. The bright light in the living room blinded him for a moment. Making a stern grimace, Henry turned to the center of the room, where there were several chairs, and immediately saw the muzzle of a pistol pointed in his direction. Before the head had time to think something, the hand reached for the holster and even had time to unfasten it. A shot rang out.

As a seasoned basketball player, Henry is used to punching different parts of his body in practice, but it was a hard hit! His eyes darkened. He sank heavily, clutching the wound in his stomach with his right hand. The cap rolled to the side, the revolver flew under the armchair. Schumer curled up on the floor and stared in amazement at his own blood, a dark puddle spreading over the clean parquet. The light in his eyes faded. It was cold.

Finally, the policeman had time to think that this was the coldest October night in his life.

Chapter 1 Welcome to Sunnyvale!

The knock on the door echoed in my head and drove away the remnants of sleep. I rolled off the couch where I passed out the day before, tossed the empty bottle into the trash can under the table, and stomped to open it. Wilkins was out of sorts and started grumbling from the very doorway:

– Who would doubt it, you haven’t even opened your eyes yet! Monday morning – I understand everything, but it’s time to know the measure!

– I have you for this, – I went to the bathroom, rubbing the back of my head, – What kind of urgent business?

The old man looked around my bachelor’s quarters with disgust. He was sweating from his haste, despite the very fresh morning, and he was breathing heavily. Wilkins went to the window and lifted the transom, letting the cool autumn air into the room. In everything that concerns cigarettes, he was an intolerable hypocrite, like all recently quit smokers.

My partner sat down on the sofa and while I was soaping my face, he stated the essence of the matter in his very specific manner:

– I was pulled out to the police station early in the morning; the phone is acting up, so they sent a patrolman. Wake everyone up, you fool… Mary picked up some stuff while I was driving to work. In general, time is running out. I did not wait for you there, I jumped home – and immediately here.

– Another business trip? I grimaced as I stepped out of the bathroom.

– I hope it’s the last one for me. So tired of all this fuss … Collect your clothes and move.

I opened a closet, on the floor of which lay a “disturbing briefcase” for such cases. What’s inside, I did not look. Nothing new for sure. Together with the briefcase, I took out a suit from the bowels of the wardrobe and even dug out a pair of decent socks on the top shelf.

Five minutes later we went down the stairs. Downstairs, I tried to move more slowly, because I owed the landlady. Police detective is not the most profitable position; I didn’t have the best account with the authorities and I didn’t blame him at all for this. So the money was not that much, and life in Boston is expensive. This is especially true for rental housing, even when it comes to the kennel that I call home.

Wilkins’ 1952 Dodge was waiting for us at the curb. The old man bought it seven years ago right off the assembly line and was terribly proud of it. Alas, the partner refused to understand that in our time, machines become obsolete at the speed of light. He got behind the wheel, and I threw the briefcase into the back seat next to the owner’s belongings and flopped into the passenger seat. My head was still splitting, there was a disgusting aftertaste in my mouth, so it was beyond my strength to appreciate the beauty of the Boston morning washed by the autumn rain. When the car started off with a grinding sound, I asked for decency:

– Where are we actually going?

– In Sunnyvale, – the disgust that the partner put into this harmless name, expressed all the contempt of the inhabitant of a big city for the province, – Population twelve thousand sixty-four people, forty-seven miles from Boston to the southwest … We will be there by breakfast.

– And what happened there – the sheriff got caught on a bribe?

– If only! Someone shot a cop in his own house.

I whistled. Look what business: in Boston, we were not entrusted with anything more serious than car theft, but here … It seems that it is not very important for the big shots that the killer goes to jail, otherwise they would not have sent the head drunk of the investigation department and his elderly partner to this case .

– Any witnesses? Versions?

– I don’t know anything. I was called right out of bed and told to pick you up and go straight to the scene. The corpse was found at dawn, someone close; he’ll probably be taken away by the time we get there,” the mongrel ran across the road, and the partner savagely pressed the horn, “Mary cursed what the world was worth. Jenny has a performance at school the other day, and here is this business trip…

Wilkins is our father with many children and five minutes to a pensioner. The ballet of his youngest daughter worries him much more than the death of a colleague, albeit a stranger. It is not surprising that the partner’s mood is not to hell.

I stole a glance in the side mirror; if I had known that a business trip was coming, I would not have gotten so drunk the day before. In Boston, you won’t surprise anyone with a rumpled face, especially if you are investigating thefts and car thefts, but in Sunnyvale … And even an internal investigation … I would not want to disappoint the locals and discredit the honor of the uniform. Although I have long forgotten what honor is, and I don’t wear a uniform. One of the advantages of being a police detective is the ability to dress in civilian clothes. After so many years in the form, I never get tired of rejoicing at it.

Sunnyvale appeared ahead an hour later; we made a short stop near the only hotel at the entrance to the city. The one-story building looked at the road with the blind eyes of windows. Rooms in such places are rented by prostitutes and drug addicts. The receptionist – an unshaven fellow in a greasy shirt – was quite surprised at the sight of guests from the big city.

“Decent people rarely drop in here, more trash… If you only want to have fun with girls for cheap, then you’ve come to the address,” he said from behind a counter covered with spots of the most mysterious origin.

“I don’t have fun on the job,” I replied, showing the type a police badge, “Two numbers, and preferably cleaner.

– How many nights? the porter perked up instantly.

“Until tomorrow, but in general I would like less,” Wilkins sighed.

A minute later, having thrown my belongings into a room with a huge broken-down bed, I went to look for a partner. He got a room at the very end of a corridor as long as a gut. Encountering a couple of suspicious faces along the way, I knocked on the last door. The furniture in this room looked more decent, but behind the wall a bunk creaked mercilessly, and a local moth squealed in time with its rhythmic moan.

– Right in the morning! What will happen here at night? Wilkins complained, “Not only have they sent you to hell, they won’t even let you sleep.

– It is unlikely that she plows around the clock, – I reassured the old man, – And in general, before evening, the city will find out that cops live in the hotel, and all the beauties will be blown off the horizon.

– To hell with them, with the girls – did you see what freaks were wandering along the corridor? I can’t stand drug addicts. They attack with anything, and then they will either slaughter their neighbor or lay hands on themselves. There was still not enough new business to rake here.

– This will not be an internal investigation, they will rake it on their own. Are we going?

“We should have a proper breakfast,” Wilkins sighed as we got into the car.

– Maybe we can intercept something in the station. Or the inconsolable widow will turn out to be a good housewife…

– Good housewives don’t have dead husbands lying around in the house, – his companion answered instructively.

And, damn it, I didn’t argue with him.

It was a gloomy autumn morning over Sunnyvale. In general, a pretty town. It must be good to raise children here. My wife once wanted to move into one – or so she said. And now he lives in midtown Manhattan, in a tiny and expensive apartment with brick walls; this is a former building of either a garment factory or a soap factory. God knows what women really want.

We stopped near the polling station and Wilkins ran out to get the address of the dead man. When he returned, our Dodge moved on and a few minutes later pulled up on a quiet street five blocks from downtown. Perhaps it was even difficult to call it a street: “Flower Dead End” was listed on the road sign before turning into a secluded nook surrounded by several houses. Only five almost identical two-story boxes, behind which the local nameless river carried its waters. Four of them had manicured lawns in front of them, with flowerbeds and garden gnomes and such nonsense, and one was clearly empty.

The house we wanted was in the middle, at the very end of the cul-de-sac. Several police and civilian vehicles parked in front of him, cluttering both the lawn and the parking space. An ambulance was also present; inside, two hefty orderlies toiled with boredom.

We stumbled in front of a neighboring house, on the porch of which an old lady was sitting in a wicker chair, frowningly watching what was happening. Why did I silently call her a lady? The devil knows. Some kind of breed was felt there: in the posture, the fit of a gray head with a neat haircut, hands folded on their knees, pursed wrinkled lips … In a word, these old women are no longer allowed out.

Getting out of the car, my partner and I stomped to the right house, on which there was a sign with the number three. The door and windows were wide open, the breeze fluttered the curtains. One could only hope that the corpse was indeed fresh enough: I am accustomed to everything, but Wilkins’ delicate stomach does not tolerate rotten meat.

Looking around the scene, I frowned. Those provincial morons didn’t even think to put up a fence. I had to forget about possible footprints on the lawn: right next to the house, with its nose almost buried in the porch and one wheel stuck in a flower bed, there was a police car. On his dashboard under the windshield, I noticed an idiotic cowboy hat. These are only worn …

– What is the name of the local sheriff?

“Murdoch,” said Wilkins, rummaging through the pockets of his raincoat for cough drops, “Do you think he’s there?”

– Not otherwise, – I pointed to the hat, and my partner grunted with laughter, – Do you think he also has boots with spurs?

– I put on the mustache up to the ears.

“Half a dollar ready,” I went up to the porch and entered the house first.

The deceased did not live well. The living room we entered had new but cheap furniture. A striped faux-wool rug adorned the middle of the room. On it are arranged in a semicircle two armchairs with a low back and one with a high back; all turned towards the small TV in the left corner. A dining table with two chairs is located near the window to the right. Behind the door opposite were, apparently, a kitchen and stairs to the second floor.

The owner of the house was lying in a pool of his own blood next to the threshold – he barely had time to enter and immediately got a bullet. He was curled up on his side in a fetal position, his hands pressed to his wounded stomach. At the sight of the body in police uniform, my soul became bad: I forgot how hard it is to investigate the murders of good guys. A bald-headed man in civilian clothes was sitting on a chair near the corpse, writing down something; I saw rubber gloves on his hands. The coroner must be.

There were three other people in the room: they just stared at us. Here, guests from the big city were clearly not welcome. Two young cops and one older, this squat bloke in a leather jacket with a cigarette in his mouth was especially unceremoniously goggling. Unfortunately, there were no cowboy boots, and at the sight of the sheriff’s face, it became clear that the bet was hopelessly lost. Suppressing a sigh, I stepped towards him and held out my hand.

– Detective Carl Boyd. I’m assuming you’re Sheriff Murdoch?

“I’m the best,” he shook the outstretched hand languidly, “So you’re bigwigs from Boston?”

Which was to be proved – we were definitely not welcome … I didn’t even raise an eyebrow, and my partner pulled out five fingers from his pocket and modestly introduced himself:

– Wilkins.

He always pretends to be a neighbor across the street who has wandered in to borrow a hammer. However, if I had spent so many years as an assistant detective, I would also rarely mention my own title. With such a partner, of course, you will not earn authority. Needless to say: the old man does not have enough stars from the sky, and no one expects this from him. And the team of us is what you need: he has long been counting the days until retirement, and I – when I get a knee in the ass.

Trying to act as if the situation was under control, I looked around the room and said:

– Bring me up to date.

– There is nothing to enter. Dead cop. Henry Marvin Schumer, thirty-nine. This is his body, and this … – the sheriff waved his hand around the gray head, – his house. I’m sorry, I won’t offer cocktails in the absence of the hosts.

– I prefer clear tape. When was the body found?

“They called the station at seven in the morning,” answered a tall policeman with protruding ears that puffed out funny from under his cap, “I was called from home, I was here at half past seven.

– Who called?

– Daughter found the body – she must have called.

I noticed several photographic portraits on the walls: the owner of the house, dressed in a military style, is captured against the backdrop of a Norman village, he is in basketball shorts with a cup in his hands, again he is already in a police uniform. There were also three or four shots of a little girl, no more than eight years old. Pretty, with chubby cheeks. She is engaged in ballet, won the spelling contest . .. Clever, although blonde – her father’s daughter.

Is she at the station?

– At the neighbor’s. We can call if needed.

– Nothing. I’ll talk to her later…

The girl must be in shock: it’s no joke to find her father in a pool of blood. What are these rednecks thinking?

I took out my cigarettes and looked around for an ashtray.

“Henry didn’t smoke and didn’t allow guests,” the sheriff observed, puffing out a puff of smoke.

– This is not a reason to litter at the scene of the murder. Wilkins…

My partner was about to protest, but he caught my stern look and immediately rushed off to the kitchen, which was indeed outside the door. He rattled the crockery there for a few seconds and finally returned with an empty coffee cup in his hands.

– Grab your health.

– Thank you.

I lit a cigarette, took a cup and squatted down next to the body as if I were going to have coffee before the initial examination. I must admit, I forgot this procedure hopelessly. Moreover, the smoke hit the brains with a blunt hammer, recalling yesterday’s fun. Strictly speaking, getting drunk to the point of passing out to the crackle of an old radio is not much fun, but there was no choice. And now we had to get together. There is no need to write a detailed description of the victim, but I did it for myself in order to remember …

So, the murder victim, Police Officer Henry Schumer. White male thirty-nine. Above average height, thin, athletic build. Blonde hair, medium length, parted on the right side. The eyes are open, the mucous membranes are dry. Eye color is blue. The victim has an oval face, a high forehead, a straight nose, and a large mouth with thin lips. What else … The chin is square.

He was a handsome guy, what is there. I wonder if he managed to understand that he was starting to go bald?

Wears a police uniform. On the right side of the jacket, in the region of the liver, there is a large blood stain and a hole from a wound, presumably from a gunshot wound. The cap rolled off in the fall and lies four feet from the body. Revolver (38 gauge) five feet away, under the chair. The holster is open.

Did he try to defend himself?

The victim lies on the right side, legs bent at the knees and pulled up to the chest, both hands pressed to the stomach. There was an oval-shaped pool of blood near the body, about three feet square. No splashes or shoe prints. The room is in relative order. Walls and furniture without visible damage; no traces of other shots were found.

Cleanly done. If the perpetrator left any evidence, then these idiots have trampled everything a long time ago. Look, the corner of the carpet was turned away so that it wouldn’t get dirty with blood, they were fucking clean.

My stomach hurt. An experienced forensic specialist was needed here, and not a former military policeman who is thrown into thefts and domestic brawls. I had practically nothing to do with the murders, and if I ever investigated them, the identity of the perpetrator was obvious from the very beginning. In the evening I will certainly get drunk, and now the main thing is to keep my face. Pretend that everything is going according to plan – and they will believe you. Always works.

I raised my head and looked up at the coroner, who was putting some tools into a briefcase.

– Was the body turned over?

“This one…” he nodded at the big-eared one, “swears he doesn’t. I moved a little, within reason.

– You swear? I looked gloomily at the young cop, who immediately drew himself up to attention.

– I didn’t touch anything!

– Exactly? So the house stood open all night like that?

– It was I who ordered the windows to be opened here, – Murdoch stood up for his subordinate, – It stinks of blood – even get out.

– And how can we work now? – I carefully extinguished the cigarette butt on the bottom of the cup, – The devil knows what else your guys managed to stir up here.

– By that time, everything that was needed was photographed. They took fingerprints from switches and doorknobs – everything is as it should be, – the coroner intervened, – I arrived at the same time as the police, I live nearby. The door and windows were closed, the curtains drawn. The light was on. The carpet, by the way, had already been turned away.

I looked inquiringly at the lop-eared one, and he shook his head. Well, then, the killer distinguished himself with his chivalry. Or maybe the victim’s daughter? Unlikely, but it needs to be clarified. I turned to the bald man and asked:

– I understand you are the local coroner?

– Dr. Alvin Bell, pathologist…

– Are you not a forensic specialist?

– Alas, – he spread his hands in bloody rubber gloves, – But I’m ready to serve in any way I can. Not for the first time.

It doesn’t get any easier from hour to hour… And how to work here? Civilian doctor, thank you for not sending a dentist!

I looked at him appraisingly and asked:

– Time of death?

– Judging by the way the guy was twisted, between midnight and two o’clock. I would bet at midnight.

“What a way to place bets everywhere… With your excitement, you have to live in Vegas,” Murdoch gritted his cigarette in his teeth.

– Who told you about my retirement plans? Bell responded nonchalantly.

– So what about the victim? I reminded.

– He was shot in the stomach – that’s all I can say for now. There is no visible burn along the edges of the wound, there are no traces of gunpowder on the clothes, so they did not shoot at close range. It’s too early to talk about the murder weapon: the cartridge case was never found.

Why not!

– And the bullet?

– There is no outlet, so it is stuck inside. Bring the guy to me in the dissecting room – and I’ll pull her out in no time.

– Are all the cartridges in place? I asked, nodding at Schumer’s revolver.

– Yes. It’s on safety, the perpetrator had his own gun. We didn’t find it.

I got to my feet and walked over to the table to put down the cup.

– You can pick up the body.

Bell looked outside and whistled. Car doors slammed shut, and feet in huge boots stomped on the porch. He didn’t want to see the orderlies loading the cop’s twisted body onto a stretcher. It’s better to have a look around the house. I took a step towards the only door leading out of the living room: beyond it was a small hallway. A staircase ran up along the right wall, under which a guest toilet was sheltered, and a spacious kitchen was visible ahead.

Nothing of interest was found in the toilet. In addition, the light bulb burned out – it hardly occurred to the killer to look here. I closed the door and went straight ahead. The food in this house was treated with indifference. Looking in the kitchen cabinets, I found nothing but a few packs of spaghetti and canned meats. All household utensils – a couple of pots and a frying pan. The only knife, however, was in excellent condition: sharpened and cleanly washed. Plates and cutlery are new and inexpensive, like everything I’ve seen here.

Mrs. Schumer doesn’t seem to like cooking. Does it even exist? There are no female photos in the living room. Is the victim a single father? Widower or divorced? I did not want to ask my colleagues, they are not very friendly. It’s easier to look through a personal file in the precinct, all the information about the family is entered there.

Returning to the corridor, I climbed the narrow stairs to the top. There were three doors leading out of the semi-dark hall on the second floor. The middle one was ajar, behind it was the bathroom. I looked around briefly and, finding nothing relevant, pushed open the left door and entered the master’s bedroom. A narrow bed stood along one wall, opposite a built-in wardrobe, with doors painted beige to match the walls – a minimalist, even ascetic setting. The bed is lined up. This guy is used to discipline. The only decoration was a pair of dumbbells lying near the window.

“Like empty,” Wilkins said from behind.

– More like a bachelor’s room, don’t you think?

– It seems that a woman has not been here for a long time.

– If they did, it was obviously not every night.

In the closet we found a few shirts with coat hangers and an evening suit in a paper bag. On the shelves, in addition to underwear, was a neat stack of gray T-shirts and several pairs of basketball shorts folded in a rectangle. Four pairs of sneakers lined up on the closet floor. Sport was not the last place in the life of Henry Schumer.

I crossed the hall and pushed open the third door. The layout of the daughter’s room mirrored the father’s bedroom. However, the nursery turned out not to be childish at all. No toys or books with bright covers, the same dull beige paint on the walls… But there was a dressing table that served as a desk and a shelf with books. Mostly textbooks, several encyclopedias, a French dictionary.

Opening the closet, I whistled: a young lady’s wardrobe could compete in compactness with her father’s, but something else surprised me. All these dresses, blouses and trousers, hanging neatly on the shoulders, belonged to an adult girl. She’s probably not tall, but the little girl in the living room photo has definitely grown up.

– Strange family, huh? – asked partner, as if reading my mind.

– Not the right word. Can’t wait to look into his personal file.

– So we’re going to the station?

“Let’s go,” I closed the closet and listened: it was quiet downstairs, “It seems that our colleagues have already gone there.

Sunnyvale, California, Industry

In the 1880s, 48% of farm and garden work in Santa Clara County was done by Chinese workers. This percentage decreased significantly after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act. The next ten years saw a significant influx of immigrants from Italy, the Azores and Japan who replaced the Chinese in agricultural work.

In 1897, Walter Everett Crossman bought 200 acres (809,000m) of land with the intent of starting a real estate business. He advertised the area as “Beautiful Murphy”. Later, in the 1900s, a real estate pioneer referred to the land as The City of Destiny.

Also in 1897, the Encina School was opened, which was the first school opened in Murphy. Until that time, city children went to school in the nearby town of Mountain View.

In 1901 the residents of Murphy were notified that they could no longer use the name Encinal or Murphy for the local post office. Then it was decided to give the city a new name – Sunnyvale.

Sunnyvale continued to grow when the dried fruit companies boomed in 1904.

In 1906, Joshua Hendy’s ironworks was moved from San Francisco to Sunnyvale after the company building was destroyed by fire in the 1919 earthquake.06 years. This plant was the first non-agricultural enterprise in the city. Joshua Hendy’s factory soon moved from mining equipment to high-tech products such as ship steam engines. That same year, Libby (Libby, McNeill & Libby – a Chicago meatpacking company) decides to open a fruit packaging factory in Sunnyvale. Today, a water tower, painted to match Libby’s first fruit tin, marks the location of the old factory.

In 1912, as a result of a general vote of residents, Sunnyvale was officially approved as a city.

Fremont High School was opened in 1925. Until that moment, a military base functioned on the territory of the school. Aircraft bound for Moffett field stopped here to refuel. On the school grounds there are still buildings of the old military style, including a hangar in which wrestling classes are now held.

In 1930, Congress decided to locate the West Coast dirigible base at Sunnyvale. This naval air base was later renamed Moffett Federal Airfield.

During World War II, the demands of the wartime economy caused agrarian holdings in Santa Clara County to give way to high-tech industry. The workshops of the Joshua Hendy factory assembled ship steam engines, ship guns and rocket launchers to support military capabilities. With the growth of the defense industry, a labor shortage in the agricultural sector began to grow, but this shortage was soon filled by emigrants from Mexico who arrived in Sunnyvale.

After the war, fruit orchards and corn fields were cleared for new homes and offices. In 1956, the Lockheed Aircraft Company moved its headquarters to Sunnyvale. In 1969, AMD was founded in Sunnyvale, a microelectronics company (AMD is now Intel’s main competitor in the microprocessor market).

In 2003, most of the remaining horticultural holdings owned by Olson (English C.J. Olson) were liquidated due to the construction of a shopping center. The last horticultural site in Sunnyvale is now located just behind Las Palmas Park (eng. Las Palmas), but it is also planned to be liquidated to use the land for building houses and shops. But there are still quite a few gardens that are the property of the city, such as the garden in the area of the city’s cultural center (English Community Center).

As the geographic center of Silicon Valley, Sunnyvale is home to a number of high-tech company headquarters such as Juniper Networks, AMD, Palm, Inc., Network Appliance, Spansion, Yahoo, and Ariba. The city also hosts several aerospace and defense companies such as: Lockheed Martin (the company’s largest office), Honeywell, Northrop Grumman (the Hendy Ironworks museum is located on its territory). Spirent Communications also has an office in Sunnyvale.

Also partly bordering Mountain View, Sunnyvale is home to NASA’s Joseph Ames Research Center for the study of the Moon and Mars.

Geography

Sunnyvale is located at 37°22′7.56″ N and 122°2′13.4″ W.

Sunnyvale is bordered by San Francisco Bay to the north, Mountain View to the west, Santa Clara and San Jose to the east, and Cupertino to the south.

According to the US Land Registry, the city covers an area of 58.6 km² of which 55.8 km² is land and 1.8 km² (3.05%) is water. The city is located at an altitude of 39 m above sea level.

Climate

On May 4, 1998, Sunnyvale was hit by an unusual F2 tornado during a severe thunderstorm, causing significant damage, resulting in approximately $4 million in damage. Tornadoes are very rare in the San Francisco Bay Area, and oddly enough, this tornado had an anticyclone rotation.

History

When the Spaniards first arrived in the Santa Clara Valley in 1770, these lands were quite densely populated by the Ohlone Indian tribes (English Ohlone ). Mission Santa Clara was founded here in 1777 by the Oloni Indians who converted to Christianity.

In 1842, Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas (Spanish: Pastopia de las Borregas ) was allocated to Estrada and Inez Castro (English: Estrada Castro, Inez Castro ). On some of these lands, the cities of Mountain View and Sunnyvale subsequently arose. Two years later, another allotment of land was allocated to one of the few Native Americans, Lupe Ynigo (Spanish Lupe Yñigo ). His land was originally named Posolmi ranch (eng. Posolmi ) in honor of the Indian village that was located on these lands earlier. Posolmi Ranch was later renamed Ynigo Ranch.

In 1844, Martin Murphy Jr. (eng. Martin Murphy Jr. ) and Mary Murphy (eng. Mary Murphy ) traveled in a wagon along the California Way and completely crossed the Sierra Nevada mountain range. In 1850, Martin Murphy Jr. bought a piece of land on the Pastoria de las Borregas ranch for $12,000. Murphy established a wheat farm and also started Bay View.0167 Bay View ). After Murphy’s death in 1884, his lands were divided among his heirs.

In 1860, the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad came to an agreement to establish Murphy Railroad Station, which led to the construction of a railroad track to Bay View. Later, another railway station “Lawrence” (Lawrence) was created on the southern border of Bay View.

In the 1870s, taxation, imports, and soil degradation caused grain farms to become unprofitable in Santa Clara County. Small fruit farms have replaced large grain farms. In 1871 James and Ellois Dowson (Eng. James and Eloise Dawson ) founded a fruit cannery in the Santa Clara area. Horticulture and canning soon became the dominant industry in the area. The invention of the railway refrigerated wagons further strengthened the position of fruit farms. Fruit farming became so common that in 1886 the San Jose Chamber of Commerce named Santa Clara County the “Garden of the World.”

In the 1880s, 48% of farm and garden work in Santa Clara County was done by Chinese workers. This percentage decreased significantly after the passage of the Chinese Immigration Prohibition Act (Eng.
