How much to charge for an after-school child care gig

Before you head into an interview for an after-school nanny or babysitter job, it’s important to put some time and research into pay rates. The more you know about the going rates for your area and the job at hand, the better off you’ll be when it’s time to negotiate pay on your own behalf.

During one of my first interviews for an after-school child care job, I didn’t do any research to determine my pay rates. I was inexperienced and thought the parents would have a fair rate in mind. The interview went well, and I felt confident the family would offer me the position. However, when they asked, “How much do you charge?” I just said, “That depends on your budget.” That worked out well for them, they said, because they could only afford to pay $150 a week.

“I learned to always come to an interview with a rough hourly and weekly estimate in mind.”

— LATASHA DOYLE, FORMER NANNY

My heart sank. The position required 20 hours a week, plus transportation and meal prep. In the end, I had to turn down their offer. The family was very disappointed, and I felt awful. After that day, though, I learned to always come to an interview with a rough hourly and weekly estimate in mind.

Doing a little bit of legwork beforehand can prevent you from experiencing that same sticky situation when you’re applying to after-school positions. Here’s how you can determine an after-school care pay rate that works for both you and the family.

Determining rates for basic after-school care

When deciding how much to charge for your after-school care services, consider the national average.

According to Care.com’s 2022 Cost of Care Survey, parents paid part-time, after-school sitters an average of $261 per week for one child. After-school sitters made an average of $17.40 per hour, working about three hours a day, or a total of 15 hours per week. Full-time nannies made an average of $694 per week, or about $17. 35 per hour, for one child for a 40-hour workweek.

National average weekly child care rates

# of children Hourly Hours per week Weekly
After-school sitter 1 $17.40 15 hours $261
2 $17.93 15 hours $269
Nanny 1 $17.35 40 hours $694
2 $17.87 40 hours $715

That said, some areas may have higher costs of living, so it is helpful to find the average hourly or weekly rates for your area. Find the going rate where you live using the babysitting rates calculator.

Jenny Ochoa, a veteran child care provider from Miami, recommends browsing after-school job listings for help with rates. “I look at families’ hourly or weekly preferences before I really hammer down on my rates,” Ochoa says.

Common factors that impact after-school care rates

The going rates and job postings aren’t the only things that should be guiding your rate research. Consider some of the other common factors that can affect your pay rates.

After-school care experience

Families often want someone to step in and manage the after-school rush without much guidance.

“While I wouldn’t charge a ton more for your years of experience, I would recommend at least $1 to $2 more per hour,” says Rachelle Gershkovich, author and founder of Maternal Instincts, a night nanny agency in Denver.

Longer or more flexible hours

Some parents have a “normal” 9-5 work day, and some don’t. If the family you want to work with keeps nontraditional hours or the schedule changes by the day, you may need to charge more or keep an hourly rate (rather than a weekly one).

Transportation

Some after-school sitters or nannies ask for a higher rate to account for the use of their car and the expenses associated with it. Note: Remember, it’s your responsibility to track your mileage and related expenses for tax purposes.

Household duties

Pet care, housekeeping, grocery shopping, meal prep — all of these are additional after-school services you can offer. It’s often easiest to find a flat rate for your “full service,” but families may want to pay you separately for occasional things like housekeeping or picking up the dry cleaning.

Tutoring

If you offer tutoring services, you may be able to charge more. You can check current after-school tutoring job listings to find out what rates tutors are charging in your area. While you likely can’t charge a typical tutoring rate on top of your hourly or weekly care rate, it is something to take into account when you figure your cost.

Safety certifications or health training

Do you have certifications or training that could boost your rates? Are you specialized in caring for infants or have you worked with children with special needs? Make sure to take this into account when setting your rate.

“A la carte” services

Many parents need basic care for their kids, but they’d also love to find someone who offers more.

“I’d be willing to pay a portion of the normal rate for someone who could teach my kid to swim or do something ‘out of the norm,’” says Julie Macon, a mom of two from Golden, Colorado.

Dog walking, packing suitcases and watching kids on the weekend are just a few things you may offer to increase rates or earn extra money.

Other cost considerations to keep in mind

In addition to all the factors listed above, there are a few elements that new after-school nannies and sitters may not know to consider when figuring out their rates. These include:

Parents’ budgets

Parents need help with their kids after school, but that doesn’t mean they can pay as much as someone seeking full-time care. As Mandy Leslie, mom of two from Chicago, puts it: “Some after-school sitters cost just as much as full-time care. That is really hard on our budget.

Early arrival

While you may only see the children for three to four hours a day as an after-school care sitter or nanny, you will often need to get in a school pickup line early or get to the bus stop before the children. Make sure you consider the extra time when calculating your rates.

Fewer hours

Fewer hours means less pay than a full-time position, but with just as many expectations (sometimes more, if you count homework help and/or meal prep). Know exactly what you need to make before accepting an offer; it’s not fair to you or the family if you’re unhappy with your rates.

Unexpected “full” days

School isn’t always in session. In addition to a “regular” weekly rate for school weeks, you should also have rates for full days, like:

  • Sick or snow days.
  • School in-service days.
  • Holiday breaks.

Summer expectations

Talk to the family about their summer needs during your initial interview. Then, work to develop a summer rate (if it’s a good fit).

Know your worth — and charge it

Once you’ve figured out your after-school care rates, be confident in them. Gershkovich adds that after-school positions are often “the hardest to fill” because of the nontraditional hours and extensive needs these families have. That means, if after-school care is right for you, there are families looking for you.

Know what you want to charge and which services you can offer. Then, share your rates confidently.

Get it in writing

When you and your employers come to an agreement on your rate for after-school care or any other duties, get it in writing. A nanny contract or babysitter contract can help ensure everyone is on the same page about expectations and rates and the services that will be given in exchange.

How much should I pay for after-school child care?

Hiring an after-school babysitter or nanny to care for your kids at home between the end of the school day and the end of your work day — and perhaps for an hour or two after that to transition from evening to nighttime — can be a huge stress reliever. Some sitters or nannies may stay to watch kids while parents cook and/or settle in or help with baths or bedtime rituals.

“It was the best decision of my life,” says Michaelann H., a real estate director and mom of three in Tampa, Florida. “When you get home from work and school, the kids need food and homework [help] and your attention and baths — but there is still laundry and dishes to do. And how do you pay attention to the screaming baby while trying to cook healthy meals?”

For parents and kids, the benefits of after-school care are clear, but how much will it cost? According to Care.com’s 2022 Cost of Care Survey, parents paid after-school sitters an average of $261 per week. After-school sitters made an average of $17.40 per hour, working about three hours a day, or a total of 15 hours per week. Nannies made an average of $694 per week, or $17.35 per hour, for a 40-hour workweek.

National average rates

HOURLY HOURS PER WEEK WEEKLY
After-school sitter $17. 40 15 hours $261
Nanny $17.35 40 hours $694

That said, a variety of factors go into a nanny or babysitter’s wage. Here are eight things to consider when deciding how much to pay an after-school caregiver for their valuable work.

1. Location

Child care rates can vary widely from place to place. For example, in the Chicago area, the going rate for a sitter to watch one child averages $15.75 per hour, but in Seattle, Washington, it averages $19.75 per hour, according to the Care.com babysitting rates calculator. You’ll see the same cost differences city to city in nanny rates.

To get a sense of what child care providers earn near you, ask around. Family and friends who are parents or parents in a local Facebook group might be a good place to start.

To get a close estimate, you can also check out the Care.com calculators:

  • Babysitting rates calculator (hourly rates)
  • Cost of child care calculator (full-time rates)

2.

Number of children

“I pay a lot higher than most parents because we have multiple kids and dogs, and I want my sitter to keep coming back!” says Jene L., a mom, author and TV host in Rotterdam, New York.

The more kids you have, the more demanding the job for the nanny or sitter, so you may need to increase the hourly rate for your caregiver per child. That rate is usually about $1 to $2 more per hour for kids in the same family, says Rachel Charlupski, founder of The Babysitting Company, a company that connects parents with sitters in several cities across the country. If you’re sharing a nanny or sitter with another family, the rate tends to go up about $5 to $10 per hour per family.

3. Number of hours

“Sometimes parents need only an hour or two of care before they come home,” says Charlupski.

That can make you feel like you’ll get away with spending less, but know that many sitters will set a minimum number of hours — say, 15 hours a week — so they know they’re guaranteed a certain amount of work each week or for each sitting job.

You might also decide to hire a full-time nanny who takes care of your babies or younger children during the day and school-age children after they get home from school. Full-time work may mean a similar (and sometimes slightly higher or lower) hourly rate, but more hours obviously means you’ll pay them more total per week.

That said, make sure you and your sitter are in agreement on not only an hourly rate but also a minimum and/or maximum number of hours before you hire them, advises Charlupski. It’s also wise to have a written nanny contract or babysitter contract that outlines everything you’re agreeing upon, including rate and number of hours.

4. Driving or other transportation

If your kids have after-school activities or regular playdates, your after-school caregiver will need to be willing and able to transport your kids.

“The hardest thing [in hiring a sitter] was making sure they could pick my boys up from their camps and after-school activities, so a decent car and a good driving record were important,” says Michaelann.

“Parents may pay higher wages as they seek a sitter who drives a safe car,” says Elizabeth Malson, founder of The U.S. Nanny Institute, formerly called the Amslee Institute, in Sarasota, Florida.

Charlupski also points out that sitters who drive kids should be compensated for gas used while on the job and for a car wash once every few weeks.

5. Experience and qualifications

Looking for someone with a child care diploma? A teaching degree? Years of experience?

“Education and experience can increase hourly wages for child care providers who provide additional services,” says Malson.

Candidates with more experience and/or more child development education than others may stand out and may be in higher demand.

6. Homework help and tutoring

In general, after-school sitters should expect to help kids with their homework as part of the job, says Charlupski. But at times, parents want more intensive tutoring, and if so, they should be prepared to pay extra for that service. In this case, Charlupski says, tutoring is generally a separate transaction from babysitting.

“It should be at least double for that time, usually an hour or two maximum,” says Charlupski, emphasizing that “homework help is different than tutoring, and we do not recommend charging more [for homework help].”

7. Housework

You might be tempted to hire someone who can wear two hats: nanny and cleaning person, but Charlupski warns against this.

“We do not recommend a sitter agrees to deep cleaning because it takes away the time that they are supervising and engaging with the kids,” she says. “But we always recommend cleaning up after themselves and the children and their activities. The home should look the same or better than how they arrived.”

To that end, make sure any household chores you add to your after-school sitter’s plate are duties that can be reasonably done while they keep a close eye on your child. For example, Michaelann says her after-school sitter does her kids’ laundry and loads and unloads her dishwasher. Similar expectations should be agreed upon up front and outlined in the written contract when you hire your caregiver.

8. Additional benefits and responsibilities

Since every family has unique needs — and different sitters have different skills they bring to the table — you may find yourself adjusting the sitter’s responsibilities and possibly the rate during the hiring process.

“We modified our sitter’s job description when we met the person we hired and saw what her strengths were,” says Michaelann.

A few skills that can command a higher hourly wage, according to Malson, include “speaking a second language, caring for pets and household management.”

And while after-school sitters who work part-time hours may not receive employment benefits, such as paid time off, you might find that offering benefits to a full-time nanny keeps them satisfied with their job. If you do, their rate can be adjusted to reflect perks you offer, as benefits are often part of pay negotiations.

The takeaway for parents who are hiring

Charlupski urges parents and caregivers to establish expectations together and come to a mutual agreement so everyone’s on the same page from the start.

“Everything should be clear,” she says.

For infrequent babysitting gigs, it’s common to simply have a verbal agreement. But for regular after-school or full-time care, it’s a good idea to sign a written contract together with your sitter. Here’s some guidance for creating a babysitting contract or nanny contract to get you started.

What everyone deems worthy of higher pay may vary, but every parent can agree that a caregiver’s kindness is invaluable.

As Jene puts it, “If they are good to my children, they deserve to be compensated well.”

Cost of Before and After School Programs – Education Expenses

CostHelper > Schools & Job Training  > Before and After School Programs

Public Schools: $100-$500+ a month For-Profit Centers: $150-$600+ a month Private Schools: $300-$800+ a month
Sometimes called Extended Day programs, before and after school care fills the gaps between standard school classroom hours and most parents’ work schedules.
Typical costs:
  • Some public schools offer before and after school care for their students, with typical fees of $100-$500 or more a month ($1,000-$5,000 or more for the school year, September to May) depending on family income levels, location, the activities provided, the hours of operation, and whether the student participates in the program only before school, only after school or both.
  • These programs may be operated by the school district or contracted out to a non-profit group like a YMCA or boys and girls club. For example, Southern Saratoga YMCA Childcare[1] operates programs in Shenendehowa District cafeterias, charging $109-$174 a month for a morning program (7:30-9 am) five days a week, and $239-$328 monthly for after-school care (until 6pm).
  • At for-profit preschools, nurseries and child care centers, before and after school care can cost $150-$600 or more a month ($1,500-$6,000 a school year), depending on location, activities provided, staff-student ratio and hours of operation. For example, Sunshine Kids Club Camp[2] in Sykesville, MD costs $190 monthly for before care only, $231 for after care only and $360 for both; transportation is provided by local school buses, which pick up and drop off students in front of the club.
  • Many private schools offer extended day programs for their students, typically for $300-$800 or more a month ($3,000-$8,000 a school year), depending on hours of operation, activities provided (recreational or academic) and the school’s reputation. For example, Swain School[3] in Allentown, PA provides up to four hours of before and after school supervision at $9.25 per hour per child, or about $740-$780 a month.
  • Home day care or a babysitter before and after school typically costs $2-$12 or more an hour, or $125-$775 a month for about three hours a day, depending on location, total number of children cared for, and whether snacks, homework assistance or planned activities are included. The lower rates typically apply to informal group situations — if one parent agrees to watch several of their child’s classmates after school for a nominal fee or if a home day care provider is caring for a younger sibling all day, and charges a lower rate for watching the child’s older siblings after school. A babysitter may charge up to $15 an hour in some locations, but that’s typically for infants and younger children who need more care.

What should be included:
  • Some before and after school programs are simply supervised child care while others include homework/study time, sports, games, arts and crafts projects, music, movies and more.
  • Before school care can last 45 minutes to two-and-a-half hours and after school programs can be one to four hours, depending on the program’s opening and closing times, and the school

Additional costs:

  • Many programs end at 6 or 6:30 pm; if a child is picked up after that time there may be an extra charge (typically a flat fee of $5-$25 or an hourly rate of $45-$60). Maria Montessori Charter School[4] in Rocklin, CA, charges $1 for every minute after 6pm.
  • There might be cancellation fee of $10-$25 or more if there is no advance notice that a child will not attend the program. Crown Sports Care[5] in Fruitland, MD has a $15 cancellation fee with 48 hours advanced written notice, and no refund for same-day cancellations.

Discounts:

  • Public school may provide free care before and after school for students from low-income or homeless families.
  • Sibling discounts for multiple children from the same family are typically 5%-25% or $5-$15 or more off the standard fee. For example, the Boys and Girls Club Huntington Valley[6] in California charges $68 weekly for after-school care for first- to eighth-graders and $63 for each sibling.
  • Before and after school care expenses may qualify for tax credits[7] up to 30% of the total cost.

Shopping for before and after school programs:

  • Before and after school programs are offered by schools, churches, boys and girls clubs, YMCAs, YWCAs, in-home day-care operators and others. The US Department of Health and Human Services lists types of program providers[8] .
  • After spending the day in the classroom, some children need a quiet, small-group setting while others want active recreation and socializing. Albuquerque Public Schools lists tips for choosing a program[9] .

I get off work at 330 but I live o the west side of Columbus and work our east so it takes me about a half hour to 45 minutes to get home. So time spent watching them would be for maybe an hour each day.

Public School After School Program
Amount: $507.00 per month
Posted by: ba_parent in San Jose, CA. Posted: January 25th, 2018 03:01PM
School: K-8 Type: Public

Our public school’s after school program is $507 a month (or $5,070 a year). I thought it was a little pricey because it’s for about 3 hours a day and sometimes I pick up my child early.
The one good thing is that if there’s a teacher work day (a random day where there’s no school because teachers are planning, training, etc. ), then the after-school care is available all day (but the kids are just sitting around playing video games).
It costs so much that it’d be competitive to find a nearby program (like language lessons or supplemental programs) that picks up kids, but we didn’t find one nearby we liked.

13 questions about extensions: price, duration, benefits, meals, sleep and more

Starting from this year, extensions have been brought to a common denominator in all schools in the country – now it implies a structured and orderly activity for children after school. Together with the Department of Education and Science of the City of Moscow, we answer the main questions related to the work of after-school groups in the capital.

How long does the extension last?

When trying to enroll a child on mos.ru in an extended day care group (GPA, development and socialization group, etc.), parents often find that an aftercare program can last from 1 to 6 hours. Moreover, in some school there can be three groups at once with different duration of work (conditionally, 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours), while in others only one option is offered. The Department of Education and Science of Moscow explains that “there are no uniform standards for the duration of the work of the GPA, but most often groups are organized just for 1 hour, 3 hours or 6 hours. The start and end times of the extension are set by the educational organization, taking into account the opinion of the parents.

In fact, the extension service usually starts at 14:00–15:30 (less often at 13:00) and ends at 18:00–19:00.

How much does the extension cost?

Prices vary greatly from school to school. The approximate range of prices is from 2000 to 7000 per month. As the Moscow Department of Education explains, “the school makes its own decision to open extended day groups. If a school opens an after-school program, then, in accordance with the law, it has the right to charge a fee for the supervision and care of children, while the amount of the fee is agreed with the governing council, which includes the parents of schoolchildren.

The cost of the extension, in addition to the costs of the salaries of teachers, educators, teachers of additional education, also includes the costs “which the institution incurs in connection with the provision of this service.” This item can include cleaning of premises, utility bills, and expenses for materials – pencils, paper, plasticine, paints, soap, etc.

All decisions on preferential terms for large and low-income families and children with special needs are made also the governing board. And even if there were such benefits last year, then this year they can be reviewed and, let’s say, reduced from 50% to 30%. And at the same time set a quota for the number of preferential places in the group.

How many children can be on an extension?

The number of children in the day care group is determined based on the sanitary requirements and conditions of the premises in which the children are engaged. At the same time, as noted in the Department of Education, “an extended day group can be made up of students from different grades of primary, primary and secondary schools.”

If we assume that the class reserved for the extended day group has an area of 30 square meters, then in it, even if we do not take into account the area occupied by furniture, there can be a maximum of 12 people at the same time (according to SanPiN, one student should have less than 2.5 sq. m, and in new buildings – at least 3.6 sq. m of area).

Who runs the afterschool program?

Of course, a lot depends on the personality of the teacher who leads the extended day group: at least this is the second most important person for elementary school students after the class teacher. And it is one thing when the GPA is conducted by a teacher of additional education, a former primary school teacher or a student of a pedagogical university, for whom this work is an adaptation to the school and who is fully invested in it, and quite another additional load on the second shift.

But, according to the department, educational organizations have the right to independently determine who will lead the after-school group: it can be either a teacher or another pedagogical worker. In other words, an after-school program can be led by a music or drawing teacher, a psychologist or a teacher of additional education. Theoretically, the governing board can also take part in resolving this issue.

Is it possible to bring food to the extension?

For children who stay for an extension, you can always order lunch or an afternoon snack in the canteen. Alternatively, a student can have a snack at the buffet using the Moskvenok card (the range includes cold and hot drinks, vegetable and fruit salads, sandwiches, pastries). Moreover, parents have the opportunity not only to get acquainted with what is offered in the school canteen and buffet (Muscovites can see this data in their personal account on mos.ru), but also to establish a ban on the purchase of certain delicacies.

Children with medical prescriptions may bring home prepared meals. At the same time, schools should provide all the necessary conditions for such students: a separate area in the dining room, a refrigerator for food and a responsible employee who helps children warm up food.

Everyone else is also not forbidden to bring homemade food to school, but you need to remember that parents take full responsibility for its freshness and quality. Whether they will help warm up the food in the canteen depends on the employees of the distribution line, on the class teacher or the teacher on the extension – here it’s how you agree (as a rule, at school they meet halfway).

Can I change into comfortable clothes?

School uniform is not compatible with a walk in the school yard. In addition, schoolchildren often draw, sculpt, and play on extensions, so sundresses, skirts, trousers, shirts, vests can fall victim to all sorts of activities.

Thus, despite the fact that the child is still at school, his school day is over, and therefore, according to the Department of Education, he has the right to change into any clothes that are comfortable for him. Which, of course, significantly increases the comfort of the child’s stay in the GPA.

Will you be able to sleep after dinner?

Quiet time is a standard kindergarten story. However, the school (attention!) should now also provide a time and place for first-graders to sleep.

According to Appendix 6 to SanPiN 2.4.2.2821-10, for first grade students in the GPA, it is recommended to “allocate sleeping quarters and playrooms. In the absence of special rooms for organizing sleep and games in a general educational institution, universal rooms can be used that combine a bedroom and a playroom, equipped with built-in furniture: wardrobes, single-tier beds.

And for students in grades 2-8, the bedrooms are replaced with assigned rooms for organizing play activities and daytime sleep “on request for weakened students.”

Another thing is that each educational organization proceeds from its own capabilities, and if there is no room for beds, it most likely will not appear, since the presence of bedrooms and playrooms is advisory, not mandatory.

At the same time, the same Appendix 6 states that in the extended day group mode “the following must be provided for: meals, a walk, daytime sleep for students in grades 1 and weakened students in grades 2–3.” You can also read there: “… each student should be assigned a specific bed with a change of bed linen at least once every 10 days.” Who is responsible for washing bed linen is not specified.

How long should the walk be?

Each school has its own daily schedule (as a rule, it is published on the school website), but this schedule must include physical activity. Under favorable weather conditions, children will definitely go for a walk. Recommendations: spend at least an hour outside before lunch after the end of school hours, as well as an hour before self-study (if the GPA as a whole lasts more than an hour). Street time should be reserved for sports games, exercises, etc.

Separately, it is noted that a walk at school is of a pedagogical nature, and for this, a specially equipped playground should be on the school grounds. In the event that parents are not satisfied with the quality of the walk (say, a child says that children are fooling around on the street while teachers are standing aside and talking), you can always contact the class teacher or the school administration.

Will the teachers help with the lessons?

The so-called self-training is provided for in the GPA daily routine – this is the time to do everything that is assigned at home. The teacher organizes this work, answers questions – but does not check completed tasks and does not help solve problems.

The recommended time to start “self-training” is three to four o’clock in the afternoon, “because by this time there is a physiological rise in working capacity.” The total time spent on homework should not exceed (in astronomical hours, including mandatory breaks): in grades 2-3 – 1.5 hours, in grades 4-5 – 2 hours, in grades 6-8 -th grade – 2.5 hours. For the 1st grade, homework assignments are advisory in nature, and therefore the norms for their preparation are not prescribed.

What else should students do during the extension?

The recommendations for organizing the daily routine of students attending the GPA assume, for example, participation in “events of an emotional nature”, that is, visiting circles, participating in games, quizzes and amateur activities. The Department of Education notes that the teacher in the GPA “monitors the discipline of students and their observance of the daily routine, organizes homework, conducts cultural, leisure and recreational activities with the children.

Parents, who now, as it is supposed, can influence the content of the extension, can always contact the school administration with their comments, suggestions and wishes.

Can I use the telephone?

At the beginning of September, we were reminded that students must not use their phones during class. This prescription does not apply to the GPA: the Moscow Department of Education assures that “if the parents do not mind, then the child can take the phone for an extension.” But at the same time, it is recommended to remember that “while preparing for lessons, the child should be focused on learning and not be distracted by gadgets.”

Is the student taken to a circle in another building?

The GPA provides for a number of extracurricular activities, but often the child, in addition to the extension, also attends additional sections or circles at school – a swimming pool, karate, dancing, a choir, etc. As a rule, all extracurricular activities take place in the same building , in which children study, but in fact it also happens that the group’s classes are held in the neighboring building across the road. In this case, younger students must be accompanied by a teacher, while older students can go to additional classes on their own.

And the last thing: until what age can a child be left in the GPA?

There are no age restrictions, but most often after-school groups are opened for elementary grades. If the parents of high school students also have a need for the GPA, then, by the decision of the school, an after-school program can be organized for them as well. At the same time, the difference between the extension for elementary school students and for secondary school students will be only in the format of activities. For beginners, this is drawing, modeling, writing, for senior classes – classes according to the school curriculum.

10 changes that will happen to you after school

1) You will not communicate so much with friends and acquaintances from school

This is not good and not bad, it’s just that life is arranged in such a way that everyone has their own path. No matter how sad it is to part (even for a while) with old friends, you can still see them. Just not as often as before. Of course, the changes are likely to make you sad at first. But you need to move on, and gradually you will begin to get used to everything, and also understand that it was inevitable.

In order not to fall into depression, it is important not to forget about the positive moments that will await you after graduation – about interesting discoveries, acquaintances and amazing prospects. Focus on the unknown and the new instead of constantly remembering the past. It is not for nothing that they say that the young are dear everywhere, and over time you will feel it. In addition, it is no longer necessary to keep in touch with those who for some reason did not like you or offended you, and for some it will be the best thing that could happen after graduation.

2) New environment and new people

For several years you went to the same offices, interacted with the same people, and seemed to know the school like the back of your hand. Now something completely new and perhaps even more exciting awaits you – the life of a freshman. At a university or college, there are more opportunities not only for education, but also for personal development. A variety of hobby groups, discussions, student organizations, cultural events and, of course, completely different rules of life and study – all this requires close study. Don’t be afraid to take the first steps, ask questions (in most cases, senior students are willing to help “first students”) and take part in the activities of your educational institution. So you will surely make friends with someone and you can, if necessary, ask for help from a friend, whether it is to borrow a summary or explain a difficult task.

3) You may decide to make a radical change

Someone after graduation decides to continue their education in another city or country, because today there are a lot of options for studying. And this, of course, is a very exciting, unique experience, a chance to live away from your family and immerse yourself in a new life. If you’re thinking about big changes, weigh the pros and cons carefully, consult with your parents, ask friends for advice, and don’t forget to read student and alumni testimonials from the university or college you’ve chosen. In the first years of your studies, you will need funds for food and accommodation, will your relatives be able to support you? For what purpose do you want to leave to study, are you going to return? Can you not see loved ones for a long time? Think carefully about how to answer these questions.

4) There will be much less “obligations”

At school, they usually say: “Everyone should come to the line”, “Those who do not bring a textbook with them or do their homework will get “two”, “After the lessons we are going to and let’s go to the museum.” However, now no one will force you to do something and constantly remind you why you need to carry this or that book with you, as well as prepare for classes. In a university or college, it is assumed that once you have chosen an educational organization and entered, you understand why you need to get an education, take the process seriously and know that no one else needs your studies – neither mom and dad, nor the class teacher (who, by the way, you won’t). Therefore, the advice is this – get ready for the fact that you will have to do and learn a lot on your own, and teachers will not always give good grades the first time. You may even have to retake something, “catching” the professor you need for several days in a row. At the same time, grades, in fact, will not matter as much as “deuces” in school, when you are scolded by the whole family for a bad mark or praised in front of the class for an excellent essay. Only the knowledge and skills acquired during studies matter. When applying for a job, no one will look at how you passed the exams – only at what you are.

5) And there are more opportunities

From now on, you no longer need to intensively prepare for the Unified State Examination by regularly visiting a tutor and solving standard exam tasks. Use your free time to good use: sign up for foreign language courses, go in for sports, read books that you have long wanted to get acquainted with, get additional education, track the poster of interesting events in your city – why not, all this, by the way, can still come in handy you in the future.

And, of course, start slowly taking steps to realize yourself professionally — take part in competitions, attend thematic events (lectures, master classes, conferences), meet new people and learn about opportunities for students (internships in companies or educational institutions, grants and scholarships). Many recruiters say that it is better to take the first steps as early as possible, so you should not put them off until later.

6) You can start making money

According to the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, you can work full time from the age of 18, and before that, teenagers are allowed to work a shorter day. The first job does not have to be profitable and according to your training profile. Early in his career, Henry Ford was making $2.50 a week for his work at the foundry, and Elvis Presley was driving a truck for $1 an hour. Do not forget that you are just entering adulthood and starting to gain knowledge about it, so the vacancy of a promoter, waiter or receptionist will do. All the same, you will not be able to get a higher paying job without the necessary work experience. And the conditions in such positions, as a rule, are focused on students and suggest a flexible schedule of employment, and sometimes a temporary nature of work. But what happiness it will be then to understand that here it is, your first earnings, which can be spent at your discretion.

7) Self-organization decides everything

Student years are one of the best in the life of any person. This is a carefree and fun time, full of vivid impressions, not without reason they say: “Students live happily from session to session. ” However, this phrase contains one of the main difficulties in the life of every university or college student. During the busy period of passing exams, you will have to exert yourself to the maximum – re-read all the notes, work on the answers to the tickets and try to learn as many terms and formulas as possible, as well as analyze the difficult points of the theory. How to deal with all this if comrades from another group invite you to take a walk? There is only one way out – to disagree and concentrate on studying. And, yes, it will be really hard, especially during the first exams. But over time, many begin to get used to such a regimen and organize their time in such a way that not only not to start getting an education, but also to have time to have fun with friends.

8) Change of social status

Adult comrades will no longer condescendingly call you a “schoolboy” and make fun of your fears of the exam. As a student, you can attend many interesting events for free or for a symbolic amount, as well as receive a scholarship if you study full-time at the budget department. In addition, students have the right to use various discounts (they are provided not only in some shops and cafes, but also, for example, when buying tickets for public transport or trains). Feel free to use all your advantages, because student years fly by so quickly.

9) Self-determination

So it turns out that while studying at a university or college, many begin to think about whether they made the right choice of program and place, whether they need to change something. Someone, after studying for a year, enters again, others are transferred to related specialties. There is nothing surprising in this, because there are many options, but life is one, and it’s not always possible to decide in which direction you would like to develop from the first time.

Be that as it may, even if everything suits you, after graduating from a bachelor’s degree, you will have a choice – whether to go to a master’s program, and if so, where. Or another option – you can understand that for some reason you don’t want to work in the profession, and start, for example, doing something else from the student bench. The advice in all such cases is the same – you need to be aware of what is interesting for you, what you feel a great craving for. To do this, you should learn to listen to your inner voice and extract valuable advice for yourself from this.

10) Growing up

An adult is someone who is able to make decisions and take responsibility for them. In the course of long-term training, you willy-nilly have to grow up gradually – to become older and even wiser. If graduation from school takes place on a grand scale and is most often perceived as a kind of farewell to childhood, then on the eve of graduating from a university or college, students mainly think about how to get a diploma and where to go to work later. There is a change of priorities: young people learn to plan the future themselves and take steps to achieve their goals.

Leave after 9 or stay until 11

This question worries not only graduates of the 9th grade, but also everyone who is just about to move to the graduating class. You need to make a choice even before receiving an incomplete secondary education. By the 9th grade, it is desirable to understand at least in general terms in which direction to develop a career, since it is better to start the path in your favorite business from an early age. Not everyone knows at such a young age which specialty is best suited. Anyone who has not decided on a profession in the ninth grade should consult with a career guidance specialist. This will help you make an informed choice and get a specialty that will be in demand in the next 20-30 years.

In the question “Is it better to leave after the 9th or 11th grade?” There is no one size fits all answer. In choosing a profession, you should focus on your own feelings and desires. However, it is not always possible for a student to clearly build his career plan for many years, starting with the choice of a promising specialty and educational institution (college or university). There are a number of professions that are taught in college. In order to get such a specialty, it is better to go to college after 9 and get a secondary vocational education or study until 11 and only then enter a secondary specialized educational institution.

In some cases, it makes sense to study up to grade 11. First of all, this applies to those young people who want to devote themselves to science in the future, or already in the 9th grade they imagine which university they will enter in the future. If you see yourself as a doctor, pilot or engineer from childhood, you will need to get a higher education after school.

For all those who have not yet decided on their future profession, consultation with a career guidance specialist will help. You will be able to learn more about yourself, get valuable advice on choosing a sought-after and promising specialty, and valuable advice on building a career. Is college after 9 or 11? In secondary schools they enter after the 9th grade. But if you didn’t get into college after 11th grade, you can go to college.

Examinations after grades 9 and 11

What is passed after the 9th grade and is it possible to enter the secondary school without exams

After the 9th grade, students take the final exam – the OGE. In a college or technical school they enter according to the competition of certificates. The applicant needs to calculate the average score of the certificate and find out the passing score in college. Pupils with the best results in the ninth grade are admitted to colleges without exams. For some areas, upon admission, they arrange testing (journalism, military specialties) or are asked to demonstrate certain skills (drawing, writing essays, etc.).

It is also possible to enter a college on a commercial basis and study for a fee. You can enter with almost any grades in the certificate. There are such educational institutions in many regional centers: in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don.

What exams are taken after the 11th grade and how to enter a college or university

After grade 11, graduates take exams in the form of the Unified State Examination. Compulsory exams are mathematics and Russian. If mathematics is required upon admission, then you need to take the profile option. If you are going to go to a specialty where mathematics is not required for admission, you can leave basic mathematics. It must be passed in order to receive a certificate. The choice of other disciplines for passing the exam depends on the specialty. Enrollment in a university is based on the results of the Unified State Examination, however, educational institutions with a high rating also take into account the victory of schoolchildren in specialized Olympiads.

How to pass the exam if you left after grade 9

When entering a university or college, you need to bring a certificate and report your exam results. If you did not finish the 11th grade at school and are going to enter a university, then you need to get a secondary specialized or secondary technical education. Then you should pass the exam.

When applicants switch to a similar specialty, passing the exam is not required. Moreover, they enroll immediately in the second year of a specialized university. If you have received a secondary legal education, you can enter a law school. This statement is true for other specialties as well.

To pass the exam after a technical school, you need to come to the department of education in your region and apply. You will need to bring a graduation certificate.

Students who have switched to self-education after grade 9 can submit an application in the prescribed form and pass the USE in the general manner, in accordance with the Federal Law of December 29, 2012 N 273-FZ (as amended on March 7, 2018) “On Education in the Russian Federation”, as well as the Order of the Ministry of Education RF N 190, Rosobrnadzor N 1512 dated 11/07/2018.

College or technical school: where to go after grade 9

It all depends on what specialty you want to apply for. Students who receive practical secondary vocational education study at the technical school. Training in these educational institutions is aimed more at obtaining practical skills. Studying at a technical school provides an opportunity for education for both boys and girls. Young men go to study as car mechanics, welders, electricians, and finishing workers. Many girls are found in such specialties as a seamstress and a hairdresser.

In college, theory teaching prevails over practical training. There is a more in-depth level of education. Colleges aim to prepare students for higher education. That is, when a student graduates from college, he can immediately enter the 2nd year of the institute.

In colleges, students study for 3-4 years, and in technical schools, study takes less time – 2-3 years. Specialties in college are studied in more depth. If in a technical school students study as a “technician”, then after college they are assigned the specialty “senior technician”.

Pros and cons of acquiring secondary specialized education after grade 9

The advantages of suzes:

  • Many secondary schools are easier to get into. Some don’t even require exams.

  • Colleges and technical schools teach professions that will always be in demand.

  • After leaving college, you can immediately enter the 2nd year of the university

  • When you graduate from high school, you will get a job earlier than university graduates.

  • If you enter a college or technical school, then it is more likely that you will get a budget place.

  • Studying at a secondary school is simple, unlike most universities.

But studying in technical schools and colleges has no less serious drawbacks:

  • Pupils enter secondary schools at the age of 14-15. At this age, they still do not know who they want to be next in life. It is often advised to act by relatives who do not know who you really want to be. Either the decision to go to college comes spontaneously.

  • College graduates are not as sought after as college graduates. Employers, first of all, will choose university graduates.

  • Studying at a secondary school is not suitable for ambitious people. With this education, it will be more difficult to achieve high goals in life. But remember that if you do not have a higher education, then this is not a sentence. There are many successful people without a “crust”.

University after 11th grade? Stages of higher education.

Undergraduate

A bachelor’s degree is a level of higher education that provides basic knowledge in a specialty. Advantages of a bachelor’s degree:

1. Bachelors of Russian universities can enter Europe. Many countries have a two-tier system of higher education. The first level, that is, a bachelor’s degree, you get in Russia. You can continue your studies in Europe.

2. You will study for 4 years. This is less than in a master’s or specialist’s degree.

3. On the plus side for boys: undergraduate studies involve deferment from the army.

4. After completing a bachelor’s degree, there is an opportunity to enroll in a master’s program.

The biggest disadvantage of this level of study is that the employer does not want to take bachelors to work in their specialty, because they believe that 4 years is not enough to get the full range of knowledge in a particular specialty.

Specialist

Master’s and specialist’s programs differ from bachelor’s degrees in that they provide more in-depth knowledge in the specialty. The specialist studies for 5 years.

Studying for a specialist lasts longer than for a bachelor’s degree by only one year, but has significant advantages:

  • A specialist is more likely to get a job in his specialty.

  • A graduate of a specialty has the opportunity to go to work in any field. He can work at an enterprise in his specialty, he can teach, or he can get a job in the authorities.

  • Immediately after the specialty, you can go to study at graduate school.

  • As in the case of bachelors, future specialists will have a deferment from the army. But already for 5 years.

Minuses:

Master’s degree

A master’s degree is an addition to a bachelor’s degree. That is, you first need to study for four years at the bachelor’s degree, and then go to study at the master’s program for two years.

Advantages:

1. Master’s degree is a great option to extend your student years.

2. If a student is going to become a scientist, then this is a great opportunity to prove himself.

3. The master’s degree is recognized all over the world. Graduates of the master’s program can get jobs in many international companies.

4. The magistracy extends the deferment from the army for young people for another 2 years.

Flaws:

1. To enter a master’s program after a bachelor’s degree, you need to pass entrance exams.

2. Students are more demanding: they will need to do scientific research.

3. Masters in the course of training practice in teaching.

4. At the end of the course, masters take final exams and complete a master’s thesis. This dissertation is more difficult than when graduating from a bachelor’s or specialist’s degree.

What to choose after the 11th grade: university or institute.

There is no significant difference between a university and an institute in terms of education. And there, and there you need to constantly go to pairs. How seriously your diploma will be quoted will depend more on the university. The Institute is a higher educational institution with a narrow focus: medical, aviation, technical, etc.
