Our Statewide School District – Teach in Hawaii

While all of HIDOE’s districts offer distinctive characteristics and locations throughout the Hawaiian Islands, they personify our mission of empowering students for the brightest futures.

The District:

The Hawai`i State Department of Education is a large statewide school district comprised of 257 schools that are divided into seven smaller districts across the Hawaiian islands. On the island of O‘ahu, you’ll find four smaller districts – Honolulu, Central, Leeward and Windward.  On the island of Hawai`i, you’ll find Hawai`i District.  On the islands of Maui, Moloka‘i and Lāna‘i, you’ll find Maui District.   On the island of Kaua‘i, you’ll find Kaua‘i District.   Each district is subdivided into complex areas. Each district complex includes high schools and the middle and elementary schools that feed into them.

Teaching on O‘ahu:

There are four school districts on the island of O‘ahu: Honolulu, Central, Leeward, and Windward. The Honolulu, Central, and Leeward districts are comprised of six complexes, and Windward is comprised of four. Each complex features one high school and a variety of middle and elementary schools.

You’ll find most of the district’s complexes on the island of Maui itself, with others settled on the nearby islands of and Lāna‘i and Moloka‘i. Each complex includes a high school along with the middle schools and elementary schools that feed it.

Our Intensive English Course is an integrated ESL course that combines speaking, grammar, listening, pronunciation, reading and writing. It consists of 4 hours of instruction per day, Monday through Thursday, for a total of 16 hours per week. Classes are usually held from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, but may also be held from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, depending on student enrollment.
Students are enrolled in one of 6 levels of English – each level taking 12 weeks – following an oral and/or written entrance test taken prior to the start of the course. Students must register at least one week in advance and may start their course on any Monday.
Intensive classes are taught by the same teacher every day, allowing them to get to know their students better and help them with their individual language needs. Students on this course must be at least 16 years of age.
