Leila Denmark – the oldest practicing pediatrician in the world
Leila Elis Denmark (Leila Denmark), nee. Daughtry – February 1, 1898 – April 1, 2012 – American pediatrician, one of the developers of the whooping cough vaccine; was the oldest practicing pediatrician in the world, having retired at the age of 103 in May 2001.
One of the few 100-year-olds known for more than just longevity and the only celebrity in history to live over 114 years. At the time of her death, she was number 4 on the list of the oldest living people. She is also one of the hundred oldest people who ever lived, whose dates of birth and death are precisely known.
This amazing woman retired at the age of 103 and died 2 months after her 114th birthday.
Born February 1, 1898 in Portal, Georgia, the third of 12 children. Danmark attended college in Tift Forsyth, Georgia, where she received her teacher education, but decided to go to medical school after her fiancé, John E. Danmark, was sent to Fr. Java to Indonesia, the United States Department of State and where it was not allowed to take wives. She was the only female graduate of the Medical College of Georgia 1918 years old, and married shortly after high school.
The young couple settled in Atlanta, where Leila Denmark worked first at Grady Hospital and later at Egleston Children’s Hospital. Since 1931, she began private practice. In 1932, she dealt with the whooping cough epidemic that claimed 75 lives in Georgia. Thanks to Leila Denmark’s research, during which she managed to cure her daughter, Mary Alice (born 1930), the production of a pertussis vaccine was launched. L. Denmark described the effectiveness of her research in the American Journal of Diseases of Children. For her achievements, Danmark received the Fisher Prize at 1935 year.
In 1945 she moved to Sandy Springs where she continued her pediatric practice. At the age of 87, L. Denmark wanted to retire and moved to the city of Alpharetta, but eventually continued to work as a doctor there as well. Only in 2001, L. Denmark left her job due to vision problems. According to Guinness World Records Senior Gerontology Consultant Robert Young, in 2001, the woman received official recognition as the oldest practicing doctor. By the way, at the time of her death, she was one of the five oldest inhabitants of the Earth, Young states.
In 1971 she published a book called Every Child Should Have A Chance[3], which was later reprinted several times. L. Denmark outlined her philosophy of attitude towards children. Among other things, she was one of the first doctors to point out the dangers of smoking in the presence of children. She also sharply criticized the use of drugs, the use of coffee and alcohol by pregnant women. L. Denmark believed that drinking cow’s milk is not beneficial for children, and instead of drinking juices, she recommended eating vegetables.
Layla Danmark has received numerous awards and titles, including an honorary doctorate from Emory University in Atlanta in 2000 and Atlanta’s Woman of the Year in 1953. Her husband, a banker by profession, died in 1990 at the age of 91. After retiring, Leila Danmark lived in Alpharetta, Georgia, and at the age of 106 she moved to Athens, Georgia to live with her daughter Mary Hutcherson. On February 1, 2008, Leila Denmark celebrated her 110th birthday, in the autumn of the same year her health deteriorated, although Denmark later recovered.
Layla Denmark recently lived in Athens, Georgia.
Died April 1, 2012 in Athens, Georgia at the age of 114 years and 2 months.
