    Are school grades so important?

    Let’s think

Many parents deliberately polish their children’s heads, motivating them to excel in their school years. But are grades really that important?

Perhaps the cherished writing in the school diary is not so important, and the excessive pursuit of fives only reduces the effectiveness of the education process.

Let’s try to analyze the situation and tell you what should be emphasized in our education system.

From the first days at school, parents focus not on obtaining factual knowledge, but on grades. P yaters, fours – fine, but triples, and even more so twos, are already bad.

But what are the notorious numbers really? Nothing but an assessment of compliance with the subjective parameters of an individual teacher. Whatever the child, already from the first grades, the backbone of the so-called favorites is formed, ready to receive not knowledge, but the approval of the teacher in the form of “5”.

The rest, no matter how hard they try, receive only the remnants of this love. Yes, the situation is such that many teachers judge not by knowledge, but by how the child reacts to his commands. Hence there are indulgences and encouragement of some, in exchange for the increased “terror” of others.

Are grades a real indicator of knowledge? A question that interests many, even those who some time ago already passed through the sieve of secondary general education.

Grades represent a purely individual parameter of the teacher’s judgment. If in biology for the five it is enough to sit quietly, then in Russian it is necessary to cram the rules. Speaking about indulgences for “favorites”, the teacher may not ask for such at all, limiting himself to average students.

But what do we get as a result? All 11 years of school, as if according to a knurled assessment, are rolling after their owner, because teachers practically do not change from year to year.

In today’s conditions, these grades will not affect the student at the exit from the school. He will have to take exams, where there will be no usual teachers, desks and environment.

Everyone is left alone with their factual knowledge, which they received all these years. This is where the question of preparation comes in. In our schools, alas, they do not teach science, but teach how to get a higher grade.

It’s no secret that before the OGE and the Unified State Examination, many send their children to individual classes or specialized courses , which train the student in the subject without giving marks for it. And there is a result.

    Grades

So maybe grades are not that important?

At the exit from the school, the applicant is faced with a situation where no one needs your previous merits. The university tells him: “Start from scratch.” And indeed it is.

Within the walls of the university, no one looks at school grades , and often at the USE scores. Everyone is well aware of the situation in Russian schools with the transfer of knowledge. And everything starts from scratch.

Therefore, an appeal to you, parents. Is this pursuit of good grades really necessary, or is it better to prioritize obtaining direct knowledge?

Parents can see grades separated by commas in an electronic diary, but this is a rarity in a regular one

    Share

Parents of third-graders from school No. 47 told 74.RU that they saw strange grades in their children’s diaries. Instead of the usual triples, fours and fives, there were 3.85, 4.35, 4.65. The educational institution explained that marks with decimal fractions are formed in an electronic journal, and the teacher simply printed out the grades and pasted them into the children’s diaries. But for trimesters, teachers set whole numbers, rounding the grade in favor of the student. We decided to find out what other assessment systems are currently used in Chelyabinsk. You will be surprised, but there are schools where children do not receive grades in the lessons and for homework.

    — Before the end of the term, the class teacher pasted a sheet of grades into her son’s diary. With very strange grades, for example, in mathematics it was 3.85, – Irina, the mother of a third-grade student of school No. 47, told 74.RU. – Earlier in the network city in the electronic journal, I noticed that there are grades not with integer numbers, but I didn’t really delve into this system. But it seems strange to me such an assessment.

Anastasia Fedorova, the school’s deputy director for educational work, explained to 74.RU that they have a traditional five-point system, for the trimester students are given the usual 3, 4 and 5. In this case, the teacher really just printed out the grades from the electronic journal so that parents could see the achievement of their children.

    — Yes, in the electronic diary of evaluation separated by commas, in half of Russia it is, — says Anastasia Fedorova. – Parents see grades with decimal fractions, so that it is clear what grade a student has. If it costs 3.85, then we round this number with the help of mathematical operations in favor of the student – up to four.

Schools, as they say in the city committee for education, have the right to choose their own assessment system for students, the main thing is that it be understandable to all children and their parents.

“The use of any assessment system must be secured by the institution’s local regulations, and this document must be brought to the attention of all participants in the educational process,” said the press secretary of the committee, Ekaterina Samarina.

For example, in Lyceum No. 95 a few years ago they abandoned the traditional scheme, according to which most Chelyabinsk schools operate. Instead of a five-point scale, they introduced a weighted average score, that is, each assessment has its own weight.

    – For example, homework is worth 10 points, and control is 30-40. And if there are three fives and one four in the diary, it’s not a fact that there will be a five, as we had in the old fashioned way. If the four has more weight, then the final score will be four. It’s difficult to understand, and we, as parents, to be honest, don’t really understand this system, but the logic is generally clear,” says the mother of a student of Lyceum No. 95 Anna. – We and the children understand one thing for sure, that if you got a bad mark for the control, then in order to correct it, you need to get several fives, because one five cannot block it.

As Lilia Emelyanova, director of Lyceum No. 95, explains, they switched to a weighted average because this “system allows getting an objective picture of the students’ knowledge”.

    — How the grade is given in the journal — statistically, as it was, it is kept now — this is the arithmetic mean of all grades that the child received for a certain period, — says Lilia Emelyanova. – For example, let’s take a quarter – the child received six fives, three fours, two threes – he has an arithmetic mean of four points. And these assessments are different. There are grades that he received for control work, for the answer at the blackboard, for creative work. And the essence of the weighted average score is that each such assessment receives its own so-called weight. This weight is ranked, that is, the heaviest assessment for which the child receives the most points is the test. The homework grade is the least important.

    – This approach minimizes the risks when setting annual and final marks. It often happens with us – parents are at a loss: the child studied well, for five, and then he goes to the final work and writes worse. And then there are two questions. The first is the objectivity of grading. The second is overestimation. Therefore, the weighted average score unequivocally avoids these risks, the picture comes out objective.

In addition, the director of Lyceum No. 95 believes that under such a system, children understand the value of education:

    — The Law on Education says that we should encourage children to develop self-determination. And when the child has an understanding that the test is the most difficult and responsible work on setting the final grades, he takes this moment more seriously. He forms the correct value of the teaching, and, accordingly, the parents develop the correct idea. We also understand, for example, when we ask them to write an essay, parents very often get carried away, and then a disservice comes out. The student gets five, everyone is happy, but when it comes to control work, it turns out that the child’s knowledge is not so good.

    Share

School No. 104 in Chelyabinsk does not give grades at all in class and for homework. Children receive marks only for control work, and according to a 15-point system.

    — Yes, the absence of a lesson mark complicates the teacher’s work, but the children are not afraid to answer in the lesson, they are not afraid, as we say, to get a deuce, — Olga Petrova, the school director, is sure. – Many people think that motivation should fall, but no. For each child, a route sheet is compiled with tasks, exercises, he understands what kind of test awaits him this month. And it turns out that students on the control section do not pass one topic, but show complex knowledge.

    — At the same time, each lesson ends with a reflection: if the child still has problem areas, the teacher tries to offer him the task for which he has a problem at home. Plus, each student receives a standard and compares his answer with this standard. And then he understands what he can claim on the control section. It is very important to measure your assessment. It’s like cooking borscht: while it’s not cooked yet, you can taste it, add salt and pepper. And so is the child: before the test, he tries how much he can claim.

Pupils of the 104th school receive points for the control cut or test, which teachers then convert into grades. The maximum you can get is 15 points.

    — We introduced such an assessment system in 2018. This is more effective, because the backlash, even a small increase in the student, is more visible here than on a five-point scale, the director adds. – One point is a one, 2-3 points is a two, 4-6 points is a three, 7-10 is a four and 11-15 is a five. When you give a child just a four, it does not motivate him. And when he sees 10 points, he understands that he has absolutely nothing left to five. In a network city, we give marks on a 15-point scale, and then manually have to convert these points to a 5-point system, as it should be in our state.
