Bellevue was once THE top district, known for STEM. In the past few years (since maybe 2018), it has flipped to a pool of self-congratulatory ineptitude by the teachers union. Every initiative has somehow resulted in a measurable lowering of standards (they are currently attempting to eliminate traditional grading and teacher oversight), the near-total elimination of proven-curriculum (they are currently working on eliminating math after they somehow ruined science and social studies, and only some teachers teach ‘classics’ anymore), and the all-encompassing pollution by and for politics (where BSD405 was once politically neutral and encouraging of diverse thought, they are now violently one-sided). With Covid, Bellevue is one of the only districts that is proud…yes, proud…to refuse in-house instruction. The union is lobbying for indefinite hybrid and “asynchronous” learning. Anyone who is wise will retreat to a surrounding suburb. Avoid BSD405 at all costs.

Check the date of a review. Anything positive prior 2019 is “old BSD405.” Something sad has happened to this district recently. Parents, kids and diversity have always been great, extracurriculars and AP choice is excellent….but there is now behind-the-scenes bullying that has drastically lowered curriculum quality in favor of political-bullying. Parents who express concern are belittled, teachers who speak up are silenced (by their own union). It is scary to watch and worse for kids to live through. Before enrolling, make a point to ask about the math/science curriculum, ask what books students are required to read and what the actual quality-control is, ask around about union-priorities, and make an informed choice.

I havent had many problems personally but unfortunately have seen a lot of inaction when it comes to other students I know at my school who have experienced inappropriate behavior from other students (me included) and have not done anything to advocate for victims. I wish they did better and used their voice to inspire change, or at least listen to pleading victims who need support and justice. Also, the sports teams are very exclusive regardless of saying “try out with no experience” they simply pick the best, not the ones with the most dedication.

Northshore School District is a warm and welcoming location where everyone belongs. All races, ethnicities, and sexualities have a place in the heart of this community. I’ve been involved in Northshore School District for 9 years and counting! This district does not tolerate bullying or harassment, making it a safe environment. School spirit, clubs, and sports are taken seriously. And there is a wide variety of courses available, so that everyone can pursue their own individual path in life. The teachers put in effort and dedication to not only teach, but support students. Overall, this is an excellent school district!

I transferred to NSD after living abroad for 5 years, and at first, I was worried that the level of education would not be the same as what I had in Europe. However, I love it here. The teachers are so passionate about what they do, and the students are so motivated to do well, and the counselors are great. There are many opportunities for higher level courses, and lots of ways to connect with peers. However, one thing I struggle with is the diversity, at least at my school. It is a mainly upper-middle class white student body with some students of color, and coming from abroad, it is a lack of diversity I am not used to. However, all in all, NSD is great!

My experience with this District has been amazing! I love how supportive each teacher is and to the students and are always encouraging them to try their best. The school staff are so welcoming and friendly to all students of all races, ideas and more.

Three VKontakte groups blocked after school attacks — RBC

Three groups with information about suicide methods were blocked on the VKontakte social network after teenagers attacked students in schools in Perm and Ulan-Ude, Roskomnadzor reported

Photo: Victoria Votonovskaya / TASS

Roskomnadzor blocked three groups on VKontakte after a 15-year-old teenager attacked seventh grade A students at school No. 5 in Ulan-Ude. This was reported to RBC in the press service of the department.

Roskomnadzor specified that the materials of these groups “contained information about possible methods and means for committing suicide.”

“The data of the Internet page are included in the Unified Register of Prohibited Information. Roskomnadzor sent requests to the administration of the social network to remove illegal information. The requirements were promptly met,” Roskomnadzor said.

adv.rbc.ru

Measures taken at the request of Rospotrebnadzor.

“All users and communities that could be associated with this topic were promptly blocked by the VKontakte moderation service, both as part of their own monitoring and after requests from state regulators,” the VKontakte press service told RBC.

The Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications refused to tell RBC the name of the blocked groups and details on the content of the materials in the groups. “Details on the content and title are not reported. The existence of such groups became known today as a result of organized monitoring, ”RBC was told in the department of external communications of the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications.

Supervisory authorities took action after two incidents of attacks by teenagers on younger schoolchildren – on January 15 in Perm, two 16-year-old teenagers armed with knives, L. and A., attacked students of the fourth “B” grade and a labor teacher, and on January 19, a teenager A. in Ulan-Ude attacked students of the seventh grade “A” with an ax. In Perm, teenagers tried to kill each other after the attack, and the attacker on children in Ulan-Ude tried to commit suicide.

Law enforcement agencies detained the attackers in Perm. Due to their injuries, they are in the hospital. By a court decision, they will be placed in a pre-trial detention center when doctors allow it.

In addition, it was found that Permian teenagers A. and L. were members of a community on the VKontakte social network dedicated to the events at the American school Columbine High School in Colorado, where in 1999 students killed 13 of their classmates, and then committed suicide.

Video: RBC

Presidential Envoy for the Siberian Federal District Sergei Menyailo suggested in a conversation with RBC that a teenager from Ulan-Ude could also be a member of a closed group that promotes suicide. According to him, law enforcement agencies are studying cases in schools in Perm and Ulan-Ude for possible links.

Aleksey Volin, deputy head of the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications, also spoke about the fact that the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications will fight against communities that call for “massacre in schools” and provoke schoolchildren to commit suicide. “They immediately fall under both calls for terrorism and extremism, because they promote mass anti-social behavior, in fact, provoke schoolchildren to commit suicide. Thus, by analogy with the Blue Whale, they will no doubt be blocked,” Volin said.

State Duma deputies also intend to make their proposals on combating illegal content that calls for violence and suicide.

Ivan Smirnov on research into schoolchildren’s VKontakte pages and inequality in the “digital space”

“For example, we are currently building models that predict the level of depression based on posts on VKontakte. Using this model, we can identify schools or universities that have a higher proportion of students with depression and try to understand what makes these educational organizations different from others. And once you understand this, you can try to improve the situation,” says Ivan Smirnov, Leading Research Fellow at the HSE Institute of Education. In an interview with Realnoe Vremya, he spoke about why parents in their posts mention sons more often than daughters, whether it is possible to download data on millions of VK users, and whether the assumption is correct that social networks lead to the degradation of the language.

“Parents in their posts on VKontakte mention sons more often than daughters”

— Ivan, tell us about your latest research and its results.

— I do research in the field of computational social sciences. That is, social research, but using not only traditional methods such as surveys, but also new data sources, such as information from social networks, as well as machine learning methods.

My current research focus is on student well-being, and before that I was researching digital inequality. For example, we found that parents in their posts on VKontakte mention sons more often than daughters. In general, preference for sons is a well-known phenomenon. Across countries, parents spend more time with their sons, mothers breastfeed boys longer, and fathers are more likely to stay with families if they have a son than a daughter.

But it has not yet been known whether this is reflected in social networks. At first glance, it may seem that it does not matter who writes what on VKontakte. But given that a huge number of people use social networks every day, any effect is multiplied many times over. The fact that sons are talked about more may send an implicit signal that girls are less worthy of attention, and this may negatively affect them.

I also looked at educational disparities: how high and low performing students behave differently online.

At first glance, it may seem that it doesn’t matter who writes what on VKontakte. But taking into account the fact that a huge number of people use social networks every day, any effect is multiplied many times over

— That is, by posts and subscriptions to groups in social networks, you can distinguish a successful student from a three-year-old student?

— We used machine learning methods to build models that predict student performance based on social media group subscriptions or student posts. The accuracy of the models turned out to be quite high, for example, the most successful students could be distinguished from the least successful ones with an accuracy of 90%.

The most characteristic of underachieving students was that they were in groups related to horoscopes, such as the “Fancy Horoscope” and “Love Horoscope” groups, and used words such as “Aries”, “Zodiac” and etc. For children with high academic performance, it was characteristic that they, as a rule, are in groups associated with science or reading.

The same applies to the text of the posts, the strongest predictors of high academic performance are the mentions of the names of writers and scientists in the posts.

– Where do you think your model can be useful, which allows you to distinguish between the level of students? For advertising?

As a researcher, I am primarily interested in the possibility of using the model for research purposes. Now the only way to get an objective and comparable assessment of academic performance between different schools is standardized exams (OGE and USE). But this information is usually not available to researchers. Using predictive models, we can get a rough estimate of the educational outcomes of users and use it to study the factors associated with them.

Or, for example, we are now building models that predict the level of depression based on posts on VKontakte. Using this model, we can identify schools or universities that have a higher proportion of students with depression and try to understand what makes these educational organizations different from others. Once we understand this, we can try to improve the situation.

Data on a million people can be downloaded from a home computer, with VKontakte posting detailed documentation on exactly how to do this

“There are organizations that register a huge number of accounts in order to download all the information from VK several times a day”

— How do you collect information for your research? Do you use any special programs?

– VKontakte provides a special public interface that allows you to download public information from the social network. The same interface is used by developers of numerous applications for VKontakte. VK sets limits on the amount of information that can be obtained at a time, but the existing limits are enough for us. I know that there are organizations that register a huge number of accounts in order to download all the information from VK several times a day. But this is a violation of the user agreement, and we do not do this.

Many of our studies are unique in that we combine survey and social media data. That is, we conduct a survey of research participants, and then ask them for permission to download public information from their profiles. This allows us not only to use data from social networks, but also to check their accuracy. For example, in one of the current studies, we study sleep patterns using information about the time of writing posts. Without the ability to combine VKontakte data with personal data, we would not be able to find out whether the time of writing posts reflects the real mode of the day.

– So anyone can download the data of millions of people? Do you need to pay for this?

— Not needed. But there are those who sell data or, more often, analytics results. And if you need to regularly download data about VK users in large volumes, then there may be costs for computing resources, etc. But data on a million people can be downloaded from a home computer, while VKontakte posts detailed documentation on exactly how to do this.

– You also interact with schools. Are they willing to make contact and provide student data?

— I work at the HSE Institute of Education and we have a network of partner schools interested in research. Usually we find a school principal who is interested in taking part in the study, then those students of the school who are interested, agree with their parents, after which we interview them. It’s always quite a lot of work. We can then provide the analytics to the school in a generalized and anonymized form.

We also want the students themselves to benefit in some way. We are currently working on providing them with customized analytics. So far, these may just be curious facts – for example, you are in the top 10% of respondents in terms of the number of likes on VK. And we talk about the results of our research. If users learn how much information can be learned about them from their behavior on VKontakte, this can improve their digital literacy.

As expected, the older the user, the higher the average word length. A sharp increase is observed until about 23 years of age, after which the changes are not so strong

“The conclusion that social networks lead to the degradation of the language is not supported by objective observations”

— How strong is the difference between children who subscribe to public jokes and scientific groups?

— In one of the studies, we used the results of the international PISA study to assess student performance. The advantage over school grades is that it is a standardized test. That is, we can compare students from different schools with each other and evaluate how big the difference between them is. We estimate that the gap between those subscribed to scientific and literary groups and those subscribed to horoscopes and comedy groups corresponds to two years of formal education. These are very big differences.

At the same time, one should not think that humorous groups make someone stupid, while scientific ones make someone smarter. If you look closely at what is happening in these groups, you will notice that there are no special differences. In scientific groups, the same thing is often published as in non-scientific groups – funny pictures. They just have a specific theme. Most likely, the observed differences are due to the fact that students position themselves differently. Those who study well do not want to join groups about the horoscope and, on the contrary, want everyone to see that they are subscribed to scientific publics.

— What can you say about the posts that students publish? Maybe they become more primitive year by year?

— I often heard that the current generation is rapidly degrading, especially its language, and all because now everyone writes on social networks, where there is no need to adhere to literary norms. And I wanted to check it out. I decided to look at how the complexity of texts in social networks is changing. The average word length was used to measure the complexity of texts. This may seem like a very rough estimate, because it’s easy to come up with an example of “stupid” text with long words and “smart” text with short ones. However, if we take a huge number of texts written by a large number of users (in my case, the sample size was one million), then on average this figure works well.

For example, we tested that the stronger the user’s school, the higher the average word length in his or her posts. We also found that, as expected, the older the user, the higher the average word length. A sharp increase is observed until about 23 years of age, after which the changes are no longer so strong. When we looked at how the complexity of texts has changed over the past 10 years, we found that it has been continuously growing for all age cohorts of users, regardless of when they registered on the VKontakte social network.

So the conclusions that social networks lead to the degradation of the language are not supported by objective observations.

Boys write more posts at night and more negative posts, while girls write more posts in general and give more likes

— What differences between boys and girls did you notice in your research?

– Usually we don’t specifically study the differences between boys and girls, more often we compare them just to make sure our analysis makes sense. For example, we see that boys are more likely to subscribe to groups related to football and computer games, while girls are more likely to subscribe to groups related to appearance and beauty.
