Trusting minds. Why the popularization of science promotes pseudoscientific beliefs

four experiments with a total sample of almost 2,000 subjects showed that the higher people’s confidence in science, the more often they are ready to believe in pseudoscientific concepts and spread them among their surroundings. At first glance, a paradox, but if you think about it – a completely understandable pattern. nine0003

Fashion Science

In 2010-2018 Russia has experienced an explosive growth of the enlightenment movement and the popularization of science. New popular science media appeared: Postnauka, TASS-Attic (now liquidated), N+1, Arzamas, Naked Science, etc. fiction and the search for its domestic authors. Wandering educators – from the top Asya Kazantseva and Alexander Panchin to little-known young scientists – traveled around with paid lectures in the cities and towns of the “dark” country. And in urban culture, a new type has appeared – a signster (from the English scienster – a hipster who reads pop-scientific media and books, attends lectures and near-scientific exhibitions). nine0003

At the same time, with the support of the Russian Venture Company (RVC) and the hands of enthusiastic teams from the best domestic universities (ITMO University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, National Research University Higher School of Economics, etc.), professional scientific communication appeared in our country. The achievements of scientists began to be regularly told in an accessible language through the media. It seemed that the “beautiful Russia of the future” with comprehensively educated citizens, scientifically based management decisions and other fruits of enlightenment was already on the threshold. But the reality turned out to be more severe. nine0003

First call

Back in 2011, before the Day of Russian Science, VTsIOM conducted a sociological survey. It was attended by 1,600 Russians, who were asked the simplest questions from the school curriculum. For example, which is smaller, an atom or an electron? It is possible to discuss whether the answer to this question has practical significance, but to others it does. So, 11% of the inhabitants of the Russian Federation believed that radioactive milk becomes safe after boiling! And 46% were convinced that antibiotics kill viruses in the same way as bacteria. Well, in the end – 32% of Russians called the Sun a satellite of the Earth. nine0003

In other words, at least a third of our compatriots not only did not form a scientific picture of the world, but even did not take out the minimum set of information from the general education school. But today, almost everyone has to make decisions on a daily basis that require scientific knowledge: to vaccinate their child or not; what method of treatment to choose in the hospital; what drugs to drink, and which ones are better not to spend money on; whether to carry savings in the next Finiko or invest in another way. Even elementary – what is the fastest way to dry a wet towel without the sun and a radiator? nine0003

More publicity, my lord!

Perhaps the surge in sci-fi fashion in the 2010s was due to the realization by the broad masses that they lack knowledge about the world around them and a coherent, scientifically based worldview. Such a hypothesis was liked by officials from education and science. There were calls for as much money as possible to be invested in educational activities and content for popularization.

But very soon it became clear that there weren’t so many people in Russia who could consume sci-fi content. nine0003

According to the independent analytical service Similarweb Traffic Analysis, in July 2021, the Postnauka website was visited by about 880,000, Arzamas — 1.32 million, N + 1 — 2.71 million, Naked Science — 3, 41 million, Popular Mechanics – 8.84 million.

At the same time, the number of visits is not equal to the number of unique users. Usually they are a third less. The audience of all these sites seriously overlaps, and another part of the traffic comes from foreign Russian-speaking diasporas and from the CIS countries. Thus, there are no more than 6 million admirers of science pop in Russia, even according to the most optimistic estimates. The entire population of the country is about 146 million people, only 4% of them are interested in science at least in this form. nine0003

The cult of enlighteners

Despite the fashion and state support, the own efforts of talented media managers and publishers, in the foreseeable future, the popularization of science is unlikely to affect more than 10% of the Russian population. But any stone always leaves circles on the water, much larger in area than itself. The first consequences were not long in coming.

A kind of cult has formed around some of the most media leaders of the enlightenment movement. There was a division into “we” – admirers of the scientific method in a primitive positivist version, atheism, liberal values - and “they”. In addition to the main enemies – supporters of homeopathy, astrologers and anti-vaxxers – the latter group included representatives of the social sciences, philosophy, as well as eminent religious scientists. nine0003

The turning point of the enlightenment movement into a cult was the turning off of critical thinking among its followers and replacing it with several key mantras: “scientific method”, “article in a peer-reviewed journal”, “references to sources” and more. Well, the index finger of the patriarchs – who to poison in social networks.

In most cases, fans of the enlighteners are not able to figure it out themselves sometimes even with popular science retellings of complex articles on biology or astrophysics (the usual meme-replica is “I didn’t understand anything, but it’s very interesting”). Involvement in the circle of “chosen ones”, knowledge of the minimum required set of mantras and unsystematic hearing and erudition in the most hyped and convenient topics for popularization (for example, you will not find many good popular science books on hormones in plants or the sociology of inequality, but hundreds “about the brain and psyche” or “sexual behavior”) gave the illusion of understanding and knowledge. But, as scientists from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign recently found out, sometimes complete ignorance is still better than popularized ignorance. nine0003

Willy-nilly trust

An ordinary person, who himself is not immersed in a certain field of knowledge, cannot verify the statement of a scientist. Even state officials or private foundations that allocate money for research do not have such opportunities. What is science and what is not is decided only by the community of scientists involved in a particular discipline. At the same time, a musicologist is not able to judge chemistry, and a bioinformatician is not able to judge sociology. They do not have a specialized education, they are not recognized by the relevant community as scientists in this discipline, but most importantly, they have radically different languages. nine0003

The problem is complicated by the fact that the statement of a sociologist or biologist is true, verifiable and reproducible only under certain conditions of its production: a theoretical approach in interpreting interview data; setting up an experiment in the laboratory; specific parameters and assumptions of the created mathematical model, etc. Or refuse to do so – “scientists themselves do not know anything.” In the United States, for example, this split took place along party lines. The Democrats proclaimed as their slogan: “I believe in science.” The key here is to believe, not understand. nine0003

Much knowledge does not teach the mind

But how to choose – to trust or not – at the individual level? Social psychologists from Illinois conducted four experiments, on the basis of which they formed the answer. For example, in one experiment they divided a sample of 532 volunteers into two groups. The first was given to read an article with “scientific content” – it talked about the new “Waltz virus”, which was allegedly created in a state laboratory and is still carefully hidden from the public. The article cited statements by some scientists from leading universities, described in detail the laboratory procedures for creating the virus, and confirmed that the US government wants to hide its role in its appearance. The second group was also given an article about the “Waltz virus”, but the speakers in it were exclusively various activists and there were no descriptions of any scientific procedures or laboratories. nine0003

Psychologists then measured four parameters for all subjects: how convinced they were of the presented article, whether they were ready to actively disseminate information from it, as well as general trust in science and awareness of the scientific method. After that, the statistical relationship of these variables was established.

The results were as follows. For people who are skeptical of science, the presence of “scientific content” in the article did not have a significant effect. But quasi-scientific markers had a hypnotizing effect on those who trusted science: they more often believed the content of the article and were ready to spread a fake. nine0003

The critical need for critical thinking

Turning off critical thinking turned out to be the most important. The authors of the study confirmed this in another experiment. One group of subjects was asked to show “confidence in science”, and the second – “critical assessment”. Those who applied critical thinking were less likely to believe a fictional story, whether or not scientific references and scholarly authority were used to substantiate it. “Critical thinking makes you less gullible, regardless of the type of information that comes in,” explained one of the authors of the work, Dolores Albarracin. nine0003

She also noted, “People need to understand how science works and how scientists come to their conclusions. They need to learn how to select trustworthy sources and critically evaluate incoming information. The question is not about trusting science as an institution, but about gaining the ability to think critically and verify any information.”

But to develop this ability, a fundamental education is required, including the history and philosophy of science, mathematical statistics and the scientific method, the peculiarities of the methodology of the natural and human sciences, as well as a certain minimum vocabulary of scientific knowledge necessary for a modern person. Unfortunately, scientific pop or educational lectures cannot replace the basic set of knowledge. And the crowds of sinsters who have picked up on the top, but are active in social networks, are more likely to spread fakes about the same coronavirus and vaccination than to contribute to the well-coordinated struggle of society against the epidemic based on truly scientifically based facts. nine0003

“Great Minds of the Fatherland”

From January 22, 2019 The Vladimir Regional Scientific Library presents a large book exhibition – “Great Minds of the Fatherland”, dedicated to the 295th anniversary of the founding of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

The history of the RAS begins with the Decree of the Senate dated February 8, 1724, issued by order of Emperor Peter I. The Academy of Sciences was renamed twice: in 1925 – into the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in91 it returned to its former name. In 1999, by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation, a holiday of Russian scientists was established on this day. 2019 is an anniversary year for the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In less than three centuries, Russian science has revealed to the world a huge number of great names and achievements, has made a significant contribution to the development of world scientific and technological progress, especially in the field of fundamental research. The names of outstanding Russian scientists are known all over the world: M.V. Lomonosov, D.I. Mendeleev, I.V. Kurchatov, E. K. Tsiolkovsky, P. L. Kapitsa, L. D. Landau, I. P. Pavlov, S. P. Korolev and many others. Thanks to their efforts, our country has become the birthplace of outstanding discoveries and inventions of human civilization. Russia is the state where the doctrine of the biosphere was developed, the first artificial Earth satellite was launched into space, and the first nuclear power plant was put into operation. nine0003

An entire era in the history of the Academy and Russian science is represented by the scientific, educational and organizational activities of Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov. He enriched Russian fundamental science with discoveries in various fields of knowledge: chemistry, physics, astronomy, geology, geography. He made a great contribution to the development of history, linguistics and poetics. In 1748 he organized the first chemical laboratory, in 1755 he actively participated in the founding of Moscow University, which now rightfully bears his name. nine0003

The 19th century can certainly be called the golden age of Russian science , which revealed to the world the names of great Russian scientists. This is the era of great scientific accomplishments that rapidly advanced the development of world consciousness.

Our legendary compatriot Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev in 1869 discovered one of the key laws of nature – the periodic law of chemical elements, which brought chemical and physical science to a completely new level. Work on the discovery of new elements is ongoing today. Therefore, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the brilliant discovery of D. I. Mendeleev, the United Nations announced 2019year International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements.

Another Russian scientist of the 19th-20th centuries, who gained fame and recognition of the world scientific community, is Academician Ivan Petrovich Pavlov . He is considered the leader of world physiological science, a favorite teacher of doctors, a true hero of creative work. He was a member of 130 academies, universities and international societies. “This is a star that illuminates the world, shedding light on paths not yet explored,” HG Wells said about him. At 1904 IP Pavlov was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work in the field of physiology of digestion.

“…If it is true, as it is often asserted, that one cannot live without faith, then the latter cannot be other than faith in the omnipotence of knowledge,” the well-known opinion of Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, an outstanding scientist, zoologist, naturalist, a biologist whose name is inscribed in golden letters in the history of a number of disciplines from cytology to physiology, who above all valued rationalism and science. The discoveries made by Mechnikov were revolutionary and were not immediately accepted by the scientific community. Even the fundamental work of the scientist, the theory of phagocytic immunity, for which he in 1908 received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, initially criticized. “The characteristic feature of science is precisely that it requires strong activity,” the scientist argued. From the pen of Mechnikov came out not only scientific dissertations, research, but also books on philosophical issues, the theory of the universe, and religion.

Alexander Stepanovich Popov became the pioneer of a new era in the development of science and technology – the era of radio electronics. He was interested in scientific works in all areas of application of electricity. He was involved in X-ray research. He made one of the first X-ray machines in Russia, took pictures of various objects, including a picture of a human hand. A. S. Popov made a breakthrough in the invention of a new means of communication – radio. 7 May 189For 5 years, he presented his invention at a meeting of the Russian Physical and Chemical Society. This day entered the history of world science and technology as the birthday of radio.

The Vladimir region is also proud of its compatriots, scientific geniuses who were born on the Vladimir land, or, having received an excellent education, made great discoveries outside of Russia, glorifying their small homeland.

Nikolai Egorovich Zhukovsky

Vladimir Kozmich Zworykin

Alexander Grigoryevich Stoletov

Nikolai Egorovich Zhukovsky, native of the Vladimir region, Russian scientist, mechanic, founder of hydrodynamics, creator of aerodynamics as a science. Zhukovsky’s works in the field of aerodynamics were the source of the main ideas on which aviation science is built.

Alexander Grigoryevich Stoletov – Russian physicist, conducted research in the field of electromagnetism, optics, molecular physics.
