Tips for Protecting Children from Environmental Threats

Sandcastle Day / August 5, 2023

The first Saturday in August is the perfect day to go to the beach and build a beautiful sandcastle, as it is Sandcastle Day . This fun holiday serves to promote sand art and encourages people to try their hand.

A sandcastle, also called a sandcastle, is a type of sand sculpture that resembles a building, usually a castle, although not necessarily. Sand sculpture is considered to be the oldest form of sculpture in the world. It is believed that its history goes back to prehistoric times. While there is no hard evidence to support these claims, it is quite plausible because wet sand is a good sculpting material, even if the resulting sculptures are short-lived.

However, the first use of the term “sandcastle” was recorded only in the 19th century. It can be found in the book Father’s Conversations with Children, which was published in London in 1838. The child in this educational and religious book at one point asks his father to build a sandcastle. Various other publications confirm that building sandcastles was a popular maritime pastime in Britain in the mid-19th century.

Sand sculpture as an art form began to develop in the 20th century. Beach resorts have begun holding sand sculpture competitions as a marketing strategy to attract more holidaymakers. These competitions have evolved into modern sand sculpture festivals that are held all over the world. The world’s largest sand sculpture event is the International Sand Sculpture Festival in Portugal.

Simple sandcastles can be built by filling a bucket with wet sand, turning it upside down and removing the bucket, or by pouring in very wet sand to form a so-called drip castle. Of course, sculptors participating in sand sculpture festivals and competitions use more sophisticated methods to create intricate sand castles and other sculptures.

Sand sculptures are so popular that the Guinness Book of Records even has a list of achievements associated with them. Here are some of them (as of 2022):

The tallest sandcastle (21.16 m) was built by the Skulpturparken Blokhus team in Blokhus, Denmark in July 2021.

The longest sandcastle (10. 48 km) was built by the students and staff of the Ellon Academy in Ellon, UK in September 1999.

The longest line of sandcastles (1924) was built in Brouwersdam, the Netherlands in September 2018.

The origin of Sand Castle Day is unknown, but don’t let that stop you from celebrating! Gather your friends or family, head to the nearest beach and spend the day building beautiful sandcastles. Don’t forget to take photos and share them on social media with the hashtag #SandcastleDay! You can also visit a sand sculpture exhibition if there is one near you, or try your hand at other sand arts such as sand raking, sand painting, or sand animation.

Sandcastle Day should not be confused with Sandcastle Days, an annual sand sculpture festival held in the resort town of South Padre Island, Texas. By the way, Sandcastle Days is not the only sand sculpture festival taking place in Texas. Port Aransas hosts Texas SandFest, the nation’s largest natural sand sculpture competition.
