9 San Antonio neighborhoods with top-rated elementary, middle schools

Some of the most important decisions parents make involve their children’s schooling. Public or private? Urban or suburban? What is the best class size? Where should we live? Add in countless grading systems and word-of-mouth and it can be overwhelming to find the best fit for your family.
Like so many things in life, getting into the best school all comes down to location, and neighborhoods across San Antonio track into some of the top-rated elementary and middle schools in the state.
Using the U.S. News & World Report’s annual K-12 survey and the Texas Education Association’s (TEA) annual accountability grading system, we’ve rounded up the nine best neighborhoods in the Alamo City for elementary and middle schools. Note: Since San Antonio charter schools are not dependent on location, they were removed from this list.

Alamo Heights
This posh neighborhood just north of downtown is pricey, but unlocks access to three of the city’s top K-5 schools: Cambridge Elementary, Howard Early Childhood Center and Woodridge Elementary, all of which earned an A on TEA’s most recent rankings, released Aug. 15, 2022. (It’s important to note, however, that Howard only offers pre-kindergarten and kindergarten.) All three are part of the Alamo Heights Independent School District and feed into Alamo Heights Junior School and Alamo Heights High School.
Beacon Hill/Alta Vista
One of the most picturesque neighborhoods in San Antonio is also home to one of its premier elementary schools. Agnes Cotton Academy is one of the best elementary schools inside the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) and comes with an A rating from TEA. Agnes Cotton Academy also runs K-8 and has a strict dress code for all grade levels, an unusual feature for a non-charter school.
Encino Park and Encino Ranch
Encino Park is a suburban dream, with bikeable neighborhoods, parks and a community pool for residents. It also boasts some excellent schools, all part of the North East Independent School District (NEISD). The eponymously named Encino Park Elementary is ranked the seventh best elementary school in San Antonio — including charter schools. Hill Middle and Tejeda Middle are also highly ranked, both earning an A on this summer’s TEA report. Also worth noting: these schools all feed into Johnson High School, also an A-rated school.
Far West Side
The Far West Side encompasses a large swath of San Antonio’s west side as well as many of San Antonio’s best K-8 schools, including Burke Elementary, a school U.S. News & World Report places among the region’s top 20 elementary schools. This side of San Antonio is composed of rural Hill Country terrain and suburban subdivisions to appeal to nearly every family.
Highland Hills
This South San Antonio community offers an array of housing options, ranging from apartments to funky, midcentury modern-inspired single-family homes. Schenck Elementary School is among the city’s highest rated schools, according to U.S. News & World Report, and was awarded an A on TEA’s recent rankings. Though nearby Rogers Middle School only earned a C in its most grading, it did receive an A during the 2018-19 school year, one of the last reports before TEA suspended grading due to the pandemic. Both schools are part of the SAISD.

Not only do you get an Ikea in this ‘hood, you also get one of the top 10 elementary schools in San Antonio. The neighborhood itself is composed of a mix of housing options, and its location near I-35 makes an easy commute to downtown San Antonio. Crestview Elementary is part of the Judson Independent School District and boasts a diverse student body and a 15:1 student-to-teacher ratio and an A rating.
Shavano Park
Located north of downtown — but still inside the loop — is Shavano Park. This neighborhood features locally owned shops like Merit Coffee, is close to hike-and-bike trails, and is also home to one of the best elementary schools in the city: Blattman Elementary. The school has a low 13:1 student-to-teacher ratio and an A rating.

Stone Oak
Stone Oak is one of the most sought-after and expensive neighborhoods in the city, but that premium price comes with excellent K-8 schools. U.S. News & World Report ranks Hardy Oak the No. 1 elementary school in San Antonio (and 70th in the state) while Wilderness Oak came in at No. 3. TEA’s recent report gave it an A. Also at the head of the class is Lopez, which is the No. 1 non-charter middle school in the Alamo City, according to the U.S. News & World Report. Bush Middle School is in the top 200 middle schools in the Lone Star State and its students perform well on the STAAR test. All four schools are in the NEISD and each one received an A on the August 2022 TEA report.
Timberwood Park
Located north of Stone Oak is Timberwood Park, another in-demand neighborhood with a price point to match. Schools in Timberwood are part of the Comal Independent School District, an ISD that stretches from the San Antonio city limits into the northern suburbs. Timberwood Park Elementary is among Texas’ top 100 elementary schools and offers a 16:1 student-to-teacher ratio and high proficiencies in both math and reading. Though not as highly rated statewide, Pieper Ranch Middle is still among the best middle schools in the region, ranking No. 12 in San Antonio.

Architecture of San Antonio – HiSoUR – Hi So You Are
Architecture in the US city of San Antonio, Texas comes from a variety of sources, but many of the city’s buildings reflect Texan and Spanish roots; with some influence from French builders, among others. Relatively rapid economic growth since the mid-twentieth century has resulted in a fairly large variety of contemporary architectural buildings.
Traditional Architecture
The first European buildings in Texas were a series of religious Spanish missions built by Catholic Dominicans, Jesuits and Franciscans to spread Christian doctrine among the local Native Americans and provide Spain with a sign on the frontier. The missions introduced European livestock, fruits, vegetables, and industries to the Texas region. Apart from the presidium (fort) and the pueblo (city), the mission was one of the three main institutions employed by the Spanish crown to expand its frontiers and strengthen its colonial territories. A total of twenty-six missions were supported for various periods of time in the future borders of the state. Mission San Antonio de Valero, famous for the Battle of the Alamo, is a prime example of this architecture in San Antonio. Among other examples:
Mission San Juan Capistrano
Mission San Francisco de la Espada
Mission San José
Mission Concepción
Espada Acequia
Other notable buildings of historical, architectural and religious significance include the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower and the Cathedral of San -Fernando, which are still in use. While most of them were influenced by Spanish and Mexican design styles, some buildings show a different origin. For example, the house of François Guilbaud was built in 1847 by Jules Poinsard and contains elements of French neoclassical 19century, while the Hipolito F. Garcia Federal Building and the Court of the United States (1937) is a Beaux-Arts design, and yet the Koehler Cultural Center (1901) has prominent influences of Victorian and eclectic design.
Bexar County has a separate court in downtown San Antonio. The Bexar County Courthouse, like many of the aforementioned buildings in the city, is a San Antonio Historic Landmark and Protected Urban Heritage.
Other older buildings in San Antonio include the Pearl Brewing Company, the Spanish Governor’s Palace, the Majestic Theater and many homes south of downtown San Antonio, located in the King Wilhelm Historic District built by German industrialists 19th century.
Remnants of the 19th century tourist industry
Much of San Antonio’s architecture, both old and new, has traditionally revolved around the tourist attraction industry. Buildings such as The Aztec Theatre, La Villita, Fairmont Hotel and Menger Hotel are a century old and still in use.

not the tallest skyline in Texas
While the skyline is not the highest in Texas
(Houston, Dallas and Austin above), Downtown San Antonio is unique, combining old and new styles of architecture.
Some buildings, such as the Emily Morgan Hotel, the Gunter Hotel, the Nix Medical Building, the AT&T Building (105 Auditorium Circle), the Drury Hotel, and the Tower Life Building, date from the early to mid-20th century and are considered national or state landmarks. These are “exceptional examples of Neo-Gothic Revival architecture, including carved faces (grotesques), gargoyles, and other carved stone decorations.
