Monte Sant’Angelo – ItalieOnline

The famous town of Monte Sant’Angelo with 14,000 inhabitants is located at an altitude of almost 800 m above sea level, and is the highest point in the southern part of the Gargano peninsula. Located on the edge of the Foresta Umbra and offers a beautiful view of Manfredon Bay. Monte Sant’Angelo is approximately 54 km from Foggia and 15 km from Manfredonia. The mountain on which the city is located. calcareous and therefore formed by many caves. Monte Sant’Angelo is one of the most famous places of pilgrimage in Italy, according to legend, at the end of the 5th century. Archangel Michael appeared here, pointing at the cave in the mountain and transmitting the order of God to turn the cave into a peasant temple. This shrine of Santuario di San Michele Archangelo has become the city’s most popular attraction. The above-ground part, through which you enter the cave, was built in the XIII century. On the right side there is a massive octagonal bell tower, also from the 13th century. Down the stairs is the chapel. Inside, there are notable remains of fresco painting and the episcopal throne dating back to the 11th century. At 19In 87 John Paul II visited the shrine.

Another popular attraction of Monte Sant’Angelo is the Norse-Aragonese castle from the 10th century, which was rebuilt during the reign of Frederick II. This castle can be reached through the already dry moat. Not far from the shrine is the baptistery, inside which you will find the coffin of King Rotary. Nearby is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. In the south of the city we will find the Junno quarter, where the legendary houses are located. Monte Sant’Angelo is the perfect place for a vacation or an extended weekend. Here you can combine knowledge of local culture, history, nature with relaxation and tasting local delicacies.
