How to Become a Dolphin Trainer

Dolphins are one of the smartest creatures on our planet. They love to play in the wake of a boat or visit SCUBA divers underwater. Maybe you’ve seen them perform on television or do tricks at a show? Have you ever been in the water with one? Dolphin trainers get to work with animals – fascinating, intelligent creatures – every day.

Dolphin trainers train dolphins and care for their health and well-being. Training is a 24-hour a day job and takes a real commitment. Every dolphin has a different personality so training methods vary.

Dolphins need three things – mental stimulation, physical exercise, and care. In a typical day, a dolphin trainer does all of these. After greeting the dolphin, he sorts fish and feeds the dolphin. The trainer must monitor the dolphin’s diet and health. Next, he checks the aquarium’s water levels. Then he cleans the tank and plays with the dolphin underwater using SCUBA.

Dolphins are usually trained with hand signals and whistles to do tricks that show off their natural abilities. Training is best accomplished through positive reinforcement, genuine praise, and a bucket full of dolphin snacks. Dolphins can learn to identify people, find toys, leap, dive, walk on water, play with balls, or rescue people. They are smart and can be trained to do lots of things.

Training takes place for a variety of reasons. Dolphins may train to perform at water shows at places like SeaWorld. (See: Jobs at SeaWorld). They may be trained to work with disabled people or people going through rehab. Some trainers work with dolphins for research. And of course, those dolphins you see in the movies, like Flipper, have to be trained too. Dolphins can even be trained by the military to find mines or trapped people under the sea. They are incredibly talented creatures, especially when they have a good trainer.

Dolphins are about 6 feet long and weigh around 100 pounds. It’s quite a thrill to have the smartest swimming mammal swim, splash, jump, and high five you. But it can also be a bit nerve-wracking when a dolphin darts through the water with his teeth showing. Many organizations have opportunities to get wet with dolphins for a day. It’s a good idea to spend time with dolphins before you make a career move.

Dolphin training is a very competitive field. The International Marine Animal Trainers Association is a good place to start your dolphin trainer career search. Trainers must be at home in the water and feel totally comfortable with dolphins. They must also be committed. Many individuals get into training through research. They may have a degree in zoology, marine biology, animal sciences, animal behavior, or even psychology.

Other people get involved because they love for dolphins. These people volunteer part time or work for a summer wherever dolphins are trained. Then they can move into the position of paid trainer’s assistant and eventually into a full time dolphin trainer. A professional dolphin trainer does more than just work with dolphins. They also educate the public and answer all sorts of questions.

Working with dolphins can take you all over the globe – Mexico, Florida, Hawaii, Bermuda, Honduras, or anywhere else where dolphins roam. Jobs are usually close to the coast. There are people all over the world who want to be dolphin trainers. It’s definitely a dream job. Typically a dolphin trainer will make $24,000 to $40,000 per year. Relevance. Dolphins are amazing and attractive animals. Articles and books are written about them. They are devoted to radio and television programs, movies. These animals have been known to man since ancient times. However, they still remain for us creatures in many respects still mysterious. One of the amazing mysteries of the dolphin is its friendliness towards people.

When I first saw them in the dolphinarium so close, I couldn’t take my eyes off them. They admired with their impressive appearance, smooth and shiny skin, and when they emerged from the water, it was already breathtaking. I immediately wanted to touch these good-natured animals, feed them, swim with them. These feelings are inexpressible! Such impressions were enough to fall in love once and for all with their kind eyes, mischievous smile, funny babble. And how beautifully they start up fountains! Since then, I have become interested in the life of these beautiful animals.

It became very interesting to me why dolphins are so friendly with people and always come to the rescue in difficult times. I wanted to know everything, everything, everything about dolphins: why dolphins are so friendly to people, are there schools that allow you to master the profession of “Dolphin Trainer”

Therefore, I decided to conduct a study on this topic.

Research topic: “An unusual profession – teaching dolphins”

Research goal: to find out whether among the professions related to the animal world, one of the most unusual professions can rightly be called the training of dolphins.

Having appreciated the ability of dolphins to learn, people began to catch and settle them in dolphinariums.

There, dolphins and other marine life are trained and perform to entertain the audience. These animals are easily taught to swim up at the call and jump through a hoop, play with a ball, move on their tail, “sing” into a microphone, ring a bell, ride on a rider’s back, etc. (Fig. 1.1, 1.2). How much joy and delight the performance of these wonderful artists causes, leaving neither children nor adults indifferent.

But not only for entertainment, a person uses the abilities of dolphins. People hope someday to establish contact, a two-way dialogue with a dolphin and learn from him many secrets of the deep sea. Dolphins are also being used for military purposes – to detect underwater mines.

Many people cannot imagine their life without animals. Someone decides to get a dog or a rabbit, someone is not limited to one pet and begins to breed pedigreed pets of various types, from ordinary cats to rare exotic reptiles. But there are those whose sympathy for animals is so great that it can turn into a profession. Is it necessary to go to the veterinarian in this case? Not at all.

Among the professions related to the animal world, one of the most unusual professions can rightfully be called the training of dolphins and whales. The word “dolphin” is very ancient, translated from Greek means “source of life.”

It is important to be prepared for such a lifestyle and perceive it as a plus, not a minus: this will definitely be paid attention to at the interview.

• Coaches with 10+ years of experience can earn up to $40,000 per year. Usually such specialists have author numbers and proven tricks, which only become more complicated with time. Many coaches remain in this profession not for the sake of earning money, but because of their attachment to their wards. And this means the daily smell of fish and a lot of scales (after all, the fish needs to be cleaned). In addition, cleaning the pool, monitoring the chemical and biological composition of water, monitoring the health of animals, assisting the veterinarian during examination, treatment and blood sampling.

• If all these things do not scare the future dolphin trainer, he can start moving towards his dream job with a biological education, in parallel with which he can take courses in swimming and acting skills. Plus – participation in volunteer programs of animal shelters, farms, nurseries, zoos and dolphinariums. The career of such a specialist, however, will not begin with the position of a coach. After a successful interview, he will work as an assistant trainer for some time, gradually getting used to the dolphins and accustoming them to him, and only then will he take on the entire block of duties.

2.3. Dolphin Therapy

The ability of a dolphin to have a beneficial effect on a person’s condition is widely known. The method of dolphin therapy is based on this. Swimming with a dolphin, a person forgets his problems for a while, getting a charge of positive emotions and good mood. In our troubled world, this is especially valuable.

Many dolphinariums conduct classes in dolphin therapy for patients with Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and other disorders in the development and functioning of the nervous system, so defectologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, rehabilitation specialists can also work with dolphins.
