How Much Do Editors Make?

Last updated on Jan 06, 2022

A desk piled high with manuscripts, brushing shoulders with authors at glitzy book launches, getting a first glance at the freshest fiction around — working as a book editor is a pretty dreamy prospect for lots of people. But how much do editors make? In this article, we’ll look at the range that editor salaries fall into, and what factors contribute to it.

Average in-house editor salaries

A middleweight editor in a traditional publishing house will earn approximately $55,491 according to indeed.com — a figure that is based on the aggregation of 802 salaries (as of March 2021). Meanwhile, The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the number for editor salary at $63,400 per year (roughly $30.48 per hour).

These median salaries are constitutive of the wage a person could earn if they’ve been working in the industry for a number of years. It’s worth remembering that starting salaries in many publishing houses (even the most prestigious ones) are notoriously low, as many will gladly accept a salary that barely exceeds the minimum wage to work in a desirable industry. Note also that many editorial professionals start with unpaid internships.

That being said, editor salaries are certainly nothing to scoff at, considering they come in around the average wage of a US worker.

Of course, real life doesn’t fit into neat boxes in the way that data does. Like the majority of industries, the salary publishing houses are actually willing to pay you is subject to negotiation — especially if you’re more experienced. The broader your skillset and the more advanced you are in the career, the greater the possibility of earning better salaries, particularly if you take on the extra responsibilities of a managerial role.

Big city editors get bigger bucks (in general)

How much book editors make varies from city to city, partly because of different costs of living, and also depending on how concentrated publishing houses are in certain cities. According to this Forbes article, the highest salaries can be found on the East Coast, with Massachusetts coming in at first place ($89,280) and New York a close second ($83,070).

The differences across states can be stark — with the lowest annual salaries mostly being found in the West and South: Montana ($41,030) and Louisiana ($42,340). This unsurprisingly reflects differences in costs of living and where centers of commerce are located.

Top publishers don’t necessarily pay top dollar

The Big 5, for those not up to speed with publishing parlance, means the industry heavyweights (in the US, at least) — Penguin Random House, Hachette Book Group, Harper Collins, Simon and Schuster, and Macmillan.

Many would-be editors are attracted to these big publishers because of their glittering backlists, company perks, and industry clout. However, these bells and whistles don’t necessarily mean they will be paying more. As of the publication of this article, mid-level editorial jobs at Hachette are paying $45,000, whereas graduate roles are around the $30,000 figure — the latter of which is an industry standard, whether you’re at a boutique firm or a publishing juggernaut like Hachette.

When it comes to managerial roles, Big 5 publishers often pay more because of the scale and scope of production, even if base book editor salaries are similar across the board. That said, even if indie publishers have less titles to release each year, they tend to work in smaller, more tight-knit teams that are a little more dynamic when it comes to work delegation — which is a work life that some editors may prefer.

Freelancing: figuring out your finances

With the ability to set your own rates, pick projects that align with your interests, and employ a flexible schedule, working as a freelance editor is an increasingly attractive prospect for many professionals in the publishing industry.

However, you need to view your income differently if you go it alone. Unlike a salaried in-house employee, you’ll get paid per project, and certain factors will impact what you can charge (and thus earn) — namely your skillset, experience, and editorial niche. Let’s break this down.

A steady income is not a given

It can be hard to know what to anticipate earnings-wise. Former Big 5 (now freelance) editor Alyssa Matesic says that “your earnings are going to fluctuate month to month, especially if a client needs to postpone or cancel their collaboration.”

It takes patience and perseverance to build a freelance editing business. “I wish someone had told me how many clients you need to create a reliable flow of work,” editor Jasmin Kirkbride notes, “and that it could be a couple of years before you start being able to see where your income will be coming from six months in advance.”

On top of that, you’ll have to consider what rates to charge, which can be a bit baffling if you’re not used to the usual per-project standard rates. But there are a lot of resources and fellow editors out there to help you — beginning with some insights we’re sharing below.

Self-publishing clients still pay good money

On the bright side, freelance editorial rates, whether you’re working with a publisher or indie authors, are often in line with those earned by in-house editors. The only limiting factor is often the freelance editor’s ability to line up projects. If you can organize your projects well and ensure a steady stream of clients, there’s no reason why you can’t earn a “freelance editor salary” that’s comparable to an in-house salary.

The best way to get access to work is to get words out about your service on marketplaces dedicated to the publishing business. Reedsy is a freelance platform that connects publishing professionals with over 500,000 writers in search of editorial services. If you’re looking for a low commitment means to gradually build your business, Reedsy is for you.

Freelancers can still work for traditional presses

If you’re someone who’s worked in in-house positions before, you may find that there are ties you can use as you transition into full-time freelancing. For Tracy Gold, a Reedsy editor who stayed on at her in-house firm and got paid on an hourly basis as a freelance consultant, this was made easier by the fact she was able to migrate some clients over to her own freelancing business. “I quickly picked up enough new clients to make about 30% more than I did working full-time in about 50% of the hours.”

The risk of underselling yourself

As a newcomer, you might feel like you should make low offers to secure more gigs — but low-balling yourself is inadvisable, warns veteran editor Cara Stevens. “Never under-bid on a project just to win the business. You not only short-change yourself, you also cheapen your brand and lower the standard rates for your peers.” Providing quality service costs money and time, so make sure you don’t undersell yourself just to have work on your roster.

To get a general idea of the editing market, consult our freelance editing rates summary, the data for which was taken from the thousands of collaborations that we’ve seen happen on Reedsy.

You can also use our editing cost calculator (and even share it with your potential clients) to figure out your rate by genre. Factoring in the niche of your work can be crucial to deciding your rate: one wouldn’t charge the same for a copy editing project on a high-school YA novel as they would for a copy editing of a French naval history book. Along with your level of experience, the expertise you have in a specific niche gives you the ability to do what few other editors can, thus soliciting a higher fee.

Your rates should cover business costs

Another thing to consider as a freelancer is the fact that you’re effectively running a business, meaning there will be business costs that you’ll need to cover. You have to pay for MS Office apps, pay to set up your home office, pay to be part of networks like the Editorial Freelancers Association. You need to pay taxes and health insurance to cover for yourself when you’re sick — there isn’t a company to cover you anymore. Tracy stresses that it’s vital to remember that “if you get sick, there’s no such thing as sick pay. If you can’t work, you don’t make money. I always try to have several months of living expenses saved just in case.” Aim to set a rate that allows you to, at the very least, cover these expenses so that your business is sustainable.

Julie Artz also points out that “the administrative side of running your own business takes up about half your time no matter how efficient you are. That admin includes bidding on jobs, doing sample edits, working on your website, creating blog and social media posts, creating and maintaining a newsletter, developing course content, continuing education, invoicing, bookkeeping/doing taxes, and anything else that you have to do to run your business, but do not get paid for.” At least, that is, not directly. You can make sure that you get paid for all that work by tracking non-billable hours and accounting for that as you write new quotes.

As long as you understand the crucial differences between in-house employment and freelance life, respect your own time and plan for emergencies, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t successfully earn a living without having to rely on an in-house editor’s salary. Like Jasmin says, “if you can make it all work, it’s worth it: being a freelancer has wonderful flexibility, and you get to collaborate with a really broad range of businesses and writers.” Sounds good to us!

How to increase your book editor salary

Now that you have a better idea of what you could expect to earn as a book editor, let’s look at ways to boost your salary.

1. Strengthen your skills

Pursuing and improving in-demand skills could make you more competitive for promotions and higher-paying positions. These skills include:

  • Copy Editing: Edit books for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors
  • Developmental Editing: Work with authors to improve the overall structure and content of their book
  • Project Management: Manage the timeline and budget for a book project from start to finish

  • Typesetting: Use design software to format text and images according to publisher specifications
2. Know Your Value

When it comes to negotiating a salary, knowledge is power. Before meeting with your boss, do some research on what book editors in your area with your experience level typically make. This way, you can come to the table armed with the information you need to make a case for the salary you deserve.

3. Grow your network

As a book editor, you likely already have a strong network of contacts in the publishing industry. But it never hurts to grow your network, and meeting new people can open up new opportunities. Attend industry events, or join a professional organization related to your field. The more people you know, the more likely you are to hear about a job that’s a good fit for you.

How much should you pay a book editor?

You’ve spent more hours than you’d like to admit, devoted to the first draft of your book. It was a messy, creative, unwieldy process, and as you read back through the pages two thoughts occur to your mind:

1. I have truly said everything I wanted to say in this draft. I feel at peace and complete that my message to my reader is fully in here…somewhere…

2. This draft is still a mess. There’s too much repetition, tangents, and things just don’t feel like they’re quite right. It needs some cleaning up.

Well, my writer friend, you are in the perfect position to be hiring your first book editor, and I know the primary question in your mind: How much should I pay a book editor?

First, what kind of editing do you need?

Developmental editing is when the editor breaks down the structure of your book to make sure that the content is tight, compelling, and leads the reader easily from Intro through Conclusion. The editor focuses on paragraphs and chapters, maintaining a bird’s eye view of the entire book. If you feel like your book is still a little confusing and messy, you probably need developmental editing.

Copy editing is when the editor breaks down sentences to make sure they flow well, are consistent in style and voice, and are tightly constructed. The editor zooms in, looking carefully at each sentence to see if it could be written in a more fluid or concise way. All books need copy editing.

Proofreading is when the editor scours the entire book for consistencies in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, italics, hyphens, and word usage. This type of editing is even further zoomed in, almost word-to-word editing. All books need proofreading, a separate proofreading from copyediting.

To be perfectly honest, I would say that all books need all three levels of editing. Developmental editing is what turns your messy, amateur book into a compelling bestseller. Copy editing smooths out your prose. Proofreading makes you look pro. Traditional publishers make sure each book goes through all three levels of editing, and our team at Paper Raven Books does, too.

Second, how much does each type of editing cost?

Some editors charge by the hour, and some editors charge by the word. Some editors are veteran pros in their craft, other editors have raw talent but little experience. Very rarely, you’ll find a golden editor who has tons of experience but not enough confidence to charge what he’s worth, so you’ll get a great deal on editing. Most often, though, what you pay for editing is going to correspond very much with the quality of editing you get.

I’ll give you my recommendations for the price range you should be looking at, in order to balance experience with value. I’ve hired editors for my own writing, and I’ve hired (some of the best) editors for the Paper Raven Books team, so I’m pretty familiar with all the pros and cons. Here’s what I recommend you look for:

Developmental editing at $55 to $75 per hour or $. 03 to $.05 per word.

Copyediting at $35 to $45 per hour or $.02 to $.04 per word.

Proofreading at $25 to $30 per hour or $.01 to $.02 per word.

As a ballpark, if you want all three levels of editing (as I and any reputable publisher would recommend), you should plan to spend about $1,000 per 10,000 words in your manuscript. Usually, it works out to this, whether you pay hourly or per word. So, if your book is 30,000 words, budget $3,000 for editing.

Do I

really need to hire a book editor?

Couldn’t I use a grammar software, like Grammarly, or hire an English student at a really good college? Then, I’d only be paying $30 for Grammarly or $10 per hour for an English BA. That sounds pretty tempting.

Yep, you can definitely do that. And I guarantee you’re going to cut the longevity of your book’s success.

Most books, given a bit of planning and launch enthusiasm, can hit an Amazon best seller status in some category when they’re free or on promotion. I love that this is possible. It’s so exciting for you, the author of this brand new book, to see its success, to see people downloading, and to read their reviews. That first launch is so adrenaline rushing and beautiful.

Too many books fall into the Amazon abyss after their first launch. Why? Amazon will continue to market your book to the wider Amazon audience. The problem is that much of the first audience was your own people/family/friends/network. They’re just so impressed you put a book together that they’re willing to give you great reviews and share the book.

But when Amazon then advertises your book to the wider audience, this is a more skeptical, less permissive audience. They expect a book that resembles what they’ve come to expect to read like a “real book,” with that cohesive, compelling structure, smooth prose, and error-free. The wider audience will rip you apart for repetition, tangents, and typos. And their reviews will start to sink your ranking until your book disappears into the Amazon abyss.

Gosh, sorry, that sounds really dark! But you know I’ve got your interest at heart. I know you’ve spent way too much time, energy, and money on your book already. When you get to the final stages of editing and publishing, it’s so important to finish strong.

Keep the larger vision for your book in front of your eyes.

Remember that you’re writing this book for a reason. Maybe it’s for the growth of your business and you’re planning to bring in more clients, sales, and revenue. Maybe you want to expand your speaking opportunities, and you’re going to use the book to get interviews, media appearances, and live events. Maybe you want to draw awareness to your cause or mission, and you want to attract people who want to help you spread the message. Maybe you just want to share an inspiring story of healing, and that is beautiful.

Keep this vision in mind, and remember that writing the book is only part of the journey. You are the publisher of the book, too, and that means you’re in charge of quality editing and design to make the book live into the potential you know is possible.

Editors are different. They can work on television, on radio, in the film industry. As well as in book publishers and periodicals. I am a publishing editor. My element is texts, books and magazines (including electronic ones). An art editor, for example, also works with publications. But my difference is that I work mostly with texts.

Do you already know the difference between an editor and a proofreader? Not? I explain.

Corrector (from lat. corrector – corrector) is a specialist who reads the text after the editor. It corrects missing spelling and punctuation errors, removes extra spaces, inserts missing ones, checks to see if there is a dash instead of a hyphen and vice versa. In other words, it tracks errors, the correctness of the text, etc. But the content, the meaning of the text is not his headache. The editor should think about the content. Editor (from lat. redactus – put in order) is a specialist who selects works for publication or orders them from authors. He also helps the author to eliminate shortcomings, to place accents, to express the main idea.

(I must say that in Western practice there are two types of editors. The first ( copy editor ) prepare manuscripts for publication. They can also be called literary editors. The second ( commissioning editor ) specialize in the formation of an editorial portfolio: select or order manuscripts to authors, develop ideas for future books.)

But! Managing the life of a periodical or website is also editing.

Therefore, if someone says: “Peter Ivanov edits the newspaper,” it is not at all necessary that he proofreads all the texts, correcting the flaws. This may mean that he is in charge of the process as a whole. He defines the concept, direction, section editors, columnists, publishers, executive secretary, literary editors, proofreaders, designers, typesetters submit to him … I.e. all specialists responsible for the creative and technical side of the process.

Many publications are so voluminous that one person simply cannot plan, order, evaluate all the texts, and then also correct them. This is what the whole team is doing.

Work requires unhindered access to information.

Computer connected to the Internet, reference literature, text itself (printed or on a computer)

this is how a typical editor’s workplace looks like.

Personally, I prefer to work with individual projects – books, texts. 200% like working with artworks. They require some kind of deep, very personal bestowal. The whole humanitarian part of you works here.

Although I also really enjoy working on the site. But for other reasons: it’s like lego , a constructor of texts, pictures, concepts, themes … And a lot is in your hands. Not all, but a lot.

Main duel

As I said, the editor works with the authors. This is not an easy task and often turns into a real duel. On the one hand, the editor with his own aesthetic principles and the concept of the publishing house, on the other, the author. The author has every right to defend his artistic style, his idea or the main idea.

But the most difficult thing for an editor is not when the author resists, but when he doesn’t know how to write at all. But why does the publishing house work with him? And there are various reasons for this.

We were taught at the institute that the editor should not write for the author. But it is not always possible to follow this principle. The author may be a good specialist in his field. A treasure trove of information. And you need to help him share this information.

But it’s absolutely terrible when an author who doesn’t know how to write fights for every comma. Even contrary to the laws of the Russian language.

Is there an easy author? Yes! It happens! Thoughtful, talented, intelligent author without delusions of grandeur. It is easy to work with such people – and not only for the editor. It’s easy with these people.

And yet, I understand very well authors who are suspicious of every editorial correction. Because even editors are bad. Not everyone can be trusted with their text without loss. And not every publisher. Not every magazine or site. On the other hand, each publication has its own characteristics and requirements. The word “format” did not fall from the sky – it’s a reality. Those. mutual understanding between the parties is a difficult thing.

Essence of work

The editor works with both form and content. And often the text is a kind of logical task. For example, the author writes: “I did not see Sergei. It was so dark that I couldn’t miss anyone.” Do you feel a trick?

Or: “In the construction team, Mark and his comrades set off in the morning to dig trenches, cover roofs, build cowsheds…” You don’t even need to be a logician here. For a person who knows real life, and not from books, it is clear that you cannot build a cowshed in one morning. That the barn can take all summer.

Or: “Anna went out into the garden and saw Pedro standing under an oak tree. It was spring green and rustled with its crown under the gusts of wind. It seems to be clear that it was not Pedro who made the noise with the crown, but it turns out painfully funny.

As for style… It’s more complicated. Style and the author’s “I” are inseparable. And yet there are some laws. I will give a textbook example.

Gorky, as is known, abused definitions. And so Chekhov writes to him (then still Peshkov): “You have so many definitions that it is difficult for the reader’s attention to figure it out and it gets tired. It is clear when I write: “a man sat down on the grass”; it is understandable because it is clear and does not hold attention. On the contrary, it is incomprehensible and hard for the brain if I write: “a tall, narrow-chested, medium-sized man with a red beard sat down on the green grass already crushed by pedestrians, sat down silently, looking around timidly and timidly. ” It does not immediately fit in the brain, and fiction should fit immediately, in a second. *

Wonderful editorial advice from a writer to a writer!

Read or write?

The editor who does not like to write is bad. This means that he assigns himself the role of a judge, not understanding either the nature of creativity or the feelings of the author – nothing! If Chekhov had not been a writer, he would not have been able to give Peshkov any advice. Because such advice needs to be suffered.

Electronic text editing.

There is a serious interference with the text.

There is such a category of editors – a contributing editor.

This is not just an editor who likes to write from time to time. This is someone whose job it is to review and write articles.

Another aspect of the profession is a rewriter. This is someone who digs deeper into the text than simple literary editing requires. He can generally change everything in the text, change places, write something in … I.e. practically rewriting. (That’s why it’s called that.) If the topic is interesting, then the work is a pleasure.

I don’t understand editors who don’t like to write at all. Such a colleague will definitely object something along the lines of “he is not a writer, he is a reader.” Very stupid. And stupidly, I’ll tell you.

Professional deformation

Do editors have professional deformation?

Yes, it happens. Firstly, if you are an editor, then every phrase you hear is weighed on a scale. On the subject of logic, style, literacy. On the subject of banality / originality.

And all kinds of blunders, which are a dime a dozen around, drive me into depression. And the thought at the same time gnaws like this: “Here! Train people! The untouchables are called untouchables (words that are opposite in meaning), they say “put on” instead of “put on” … Where the world is heading !!!

And you already judge people by the way they talk. If a person does not ring and tons, but calls about nits, then write wasted. Though you crack, but I can no longer take him seriously. And this is a terrible absurdity on my part, and I fight it.

Another great sin for an editor is to imagine himself as a judge of the author. This is just typical of editors who do not write themselves.

And editors like to cling to formalities: “Ah! You have the word “editor” repeated several times in a paragraph! Oh, you have “second” here. And where is the “first” ???!!!” To explain to such an editor that he is wrong, you need to educate him, make him read the classics and teach him how to write.

Such editors are martyrs who, in the process, torment others.

But even a talented editor can get blindsided over time. The immediacy of perception diminishes, shrinks, and over the years, I am afraid, may disappear altogether. To prevent this from happening, there is only one recipe: to read good books – the same classics.

Good books are the key water for the editorial mind. It washes away the plaque of the working routine, the informational noise in which we all live.

And the editor who works with talented authors is a thousand times happy.

Sad moments

Superficial authors are often very prolific. This is problem. You open the text, wade through complex scientific phrases, and find that there is not a single fresh thought there. These are the moments that bring you to despair. So much work – and all in vain ?!

I also hate reading sloppy texts written with one hand. Sometimes you open it, and there is a barn, not a text. A bunch of typos, the dots are a kilometer from the phrase, etc. I sit and put the dots in their place. Brave occupation. And I can’t quit, because the proofreader, even if he is very good, can miss something. Yes, and it is impolite to give the proofreader the text in this form.

What does a career look like?

Periodicals. Journalists often become editors in paper or Internet publications, news agencies.

The career ladder can be as follows: correspondent – department editor – production editor. (The production editor is responsible for posting materials, meeting deadlines, etc.)

In addition, there are literary editors (engaged exclusively in texts), executive secretaries (process coordinators: assignments, deadlines, etc.).

Executive secretary is sometimes confused with production editor. Their responsibilities do have a lot in common. But there is one important difference: the answer does not usually deal with text as such.

Finally, the editor-in-chief is the pinnacle. The position of editor-in-chief is associated with administration and public activities. In theory, he should also read articles coming from the authors, give them tasks, etc. But I know examples when the editor-in-chief is limited to general management, contacts with the authorities and other media.

See also:

Book publishers. Things can also look different in a book publishing house these days. In small publishing houses, the editor can be both a literary editor and a moderator (leads the work on the publication). He is partly a proofreader and even a designer. He is also in contact with the printing house.

In large publishing houses there is a division of labor – this adds order and makes life much easier.

When the text is edited and illustrations are selected, the layout designer creates a layout of the future book. But the work of the editor continues.

Editing the layout of the book “I want to be a psychologist” .

You can try your hand at a book publishing house as a freelance editor. Or, if education allows, get a job as a junior editor – a person who helps the lead editor in organizational matters.

Over time, one can become a lead editor – this is the name of the editor of the book, who is responsible for its production as a whole, as opposed to, for example, the art editor, who is responsible only for the art.

The lead editor decides whether to publish the work or not, works with the author, etc., etc. He also organizes the work of other employees on the publication. In other words, he is engaged in full-fledged editorial work.

How to become an editor?

Let’s start with the question: “Can I be an editor?”

You can, if you are interested in literature, if you like to read and write, if you have enough perseverance and corrosiveness, if you are attracted to creativity and not afraid of routine.

Another important point is literacy. You will not be able to work as an editor if you write zhi / shi through s , and arrange commas according to the laws of symmetry, and not the Russian language.

To become a professional editor, you need to have a degree in publishing and editing. Personally, I studied at a university, which today is called the Moscow State University of Printing Arts (MGUP).

But also good editors come from qualified philologists and writers. From journalists, if we talk about periodicals.

But education is only the base. Experience, professional and general erudition, an inquisitive mind and constant work on oneself must be applied to it.

It is important for a beginner editor to decide which topic is closer to him. Economy? Politics? Ecology? Religion? Fiction?

Otherwise, it will turn out that the editor is everything and nothing, a master of all trades, a professional amateur.

The theme is generally the main question of life. Even when the profession has already been chosen.

Editor (from Latin redactus – put in order) is a specialist who is professionally engaged in editing, i.e. preparation for the publication of works (articles, literary works), as well as preparation for the release of publications in general (books, magazines, online publications). Today’s books, newspapers and magazines are published not only on paper. They can come out as CDs for reading, viewing and even listening (audiobooks). In addition, many periodicals have long and successfully existed on the Internet. By the way, the ProfGid career guidance center has recently developed an accurate career guidance test that will tell you which professions suit you, give an opinion about your personality type and intelligence.
The profession is suitable for those who are interested in the Russian language and literature (see.

9000 to the obligations of future edition, order (or assignment) for writing texts, evaluation of the author’s text and its literary processing. The editor also works with illustrators and graphic designers, proofreaders and typesetters. In large book publishing houses, the art editor deals with the problems of artistic design. He develops the design concept together with the editor of the publication and then implements it.

In large publishing houses, there is usually a division of labor between editors.

Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the strategy of the entire publishing house, determines its topics and, together with the financial director, the marketing policy of the publisher. The editors of departments, editions or series report to him. They work with authors, order manuscripts, evaluate finished manuscripts, decide on revision and directly participate in this revision.

Book publishers are often invited to work on manuscripts literary editors from outside. And if it is necessary to evaluate the material from a scientific point of view, scientific editors are invited – specialists in a particular field of knowledge (medicine, chemistry, literary criticism, etc.).

As a rule, full-time literary editors work in large newspapers and magazines, in Internet publishing houses. They are responsible for the literary literacy of texts. Sometimes the editor’s intervention in the text is very significant. He literary enriches, and sometimes completely rewrites articles written by non-professional authors. This not only eliminates errors, but also changes the style as a whole and even the structure of the article. This intervention is called rewriting.

Literary editors in periodicals work under the direction of the chief and production editors. If the editor-in-chief is responsible for the unified editorial policy of a newspaper or magazine, then the publisher is responsible for its specific implementation in each issue. The issuing editor is responsible for the timely publication of a newspaper or magazine, interacts with the printing house, coordinates the work of journalists, a literary editor, proofreader, illustrators, layout designer and editor-in-chief, if he participates as an author (for example, writes in the “Editor-in-Chief’s Column”).

Managing editor participates in the development of publication plans, proposes fees, replaces the editor-in-chief in his absence, etc.

Work on the website is carried out differently, where some functions of the publishing editor are performed by content manager or Internet project manager . It is interesting that in different editions the division of labor occurs in different ways.

Some magazine and newspaper editorial offices employ editors for working with authors (search for authors, formulate assignments for them, etc.), illustration editors (build editors). In others, these duties are performed by the production editor.

With regard to senior positions, in addition to the chief and issuing editors, there are executive secretary and editor-in-chief in the periodical.

Executive secretary – the line between him and the managing editor is sometimes indistinguishable, and in some editions the managing editor is called the executive secretary (and vice versa). The main difference is that the response section is more focused on the technology of the process, while the production editor controls the content of published newspapers and magazines.

Editor-in-Chief is needed when a publishing house publishes several publications at once, and the editor-in-chief cannot deal with them all with due dedication. The editor-in-chief carries out the publishing policy in a particular newspaper or a particular magazine.

There is a misconception that an editor is a person who only edits other people’s texts. But all outstanding editors, from A. Pushkin with his Sovremennik to P. Gusev, who runs Moskovsky Komsomolets, are people who write. To work as an editor (regardless of the place of work and specific position) you need a good education in the humanities and the ability to create your own texts, understand the nature of the word, various genres and styles “from the inside”. At the same time, it is desirable to have a diploma of an editor, journalist, literary collaborator or philologist. However, the editor must be well versed in the subject of his publication and constantly develop in this direction. Often editors (scientific and even chief) are specialists in their respective fields. For example, a professional biologist might run an animal magazine.

Description of profession

  • What will you have to learn

The site editor must be proficient in text preparation tools – understand the genre diversity of content, distinguish a note from an interview and be able to write in different formats.

It is necessary to develop emotional intelligence, improve public speaking skills. Without this, it will be difficult to fully realize yourself in the profession, since work is associated with constant communications.

Employers increasingly want to see universal editors, so, in addition to creating content, you need to study various CMS. The possession of graphic programs will become a useful skill – the editor can use it to create previews for texts, collages and pictures.

If the editor works in a specialized online publication, then he will need a deep immersion in the industry, its fundamental knowledge, and terminology.

  • Functional duties

As a rule, the site editor has a supervisor – editor-in-chief or editor-in-chief. It is he who draws up the content plan, according to which the site editor should work. However, he can also initiate topics for content. After all, the search for fresh and relevant topics/persons is one of the key tasks of the site editor. Moreover, this work must be carried out daily.

An important point: content topics should be formed not only intuitively. In the process of compiling it, the editor reinforces his assumptions with the results of the service of key queries of search engines, website traffic analytics.

Where to look for ideas? They can be obtained by studying content published by competitors, reading books, interacting with market leaders on social networks, attending business events, or using online journalism query services.

The site editor is able not only to write the text himself, but also to process the material prepared by correspondents and freelance writers.

At HR-tv.ru, the content manager does the layout. However, the editor also has these skills and, if necessary, takes on this work.

Naturally, the site editor is the first one who is interested in the fact that the content is in demand by the audience. The text may be perfect, but if the reader does not know about it, this content makes no sense. Therefore, the site editor actively uses social networks, mailing lists and push notifications as additional platforms for promoting texts.

  • Career prospects

As a rule, site editors do not immediately become. Specialists start with the positions of a freelance correspondent, journalist, copywriter, content manager.

The next stage in the career trajectory will be the position of the site editor. And then, having achieved positive professional results, you can apply for the position of editor-in-chief, editor-in-chief or project manager.
