History

The area that is now Rochester was inhabited by the Sioux, Ojibwe, and Winnebago Native American tribes. In 1851, the Sioux gave the land to the state of Minnesota.

Rochester was founded by George Head in 1854 on the site of what is now the financial center of the city. Originally from Rochester (in New York), Head lived in Wisconsin and then moved to Minnesota. He named his settlement South Fork on the Sumbro River (eng. South Fork of the Zumbro River ) and built a house where his family lived and a tavern. Already in 1856, the population of the village was 50 people, and two years later it grew to 1,500. In 1857, Rochester became the center of Olmsted County. In 1860, a railway was built, as a result of which new residents appeared in the city, and, consequently, active economic development.

On August 21, 1883, a tornado destroyed much of Rochester, killing 37 and injuring 200 people. There was no medical service in the city, so Mayo and his two sons took over the role of orderlies. Donations of $60,000 from St. Francis Convent helped Mayo open his own hospital in 1889. Now it is one of the largest and most respected medical institutions in the world. Many famous people from around the world, including former US Presidents George HW Bush, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, as well as King Hussein bin Talal of Jordan, visited Rochester as patients of the clinic.
