I can’t say enough good things about Stepping Stones. They have taken care of my twin nephews since they were 6 months old. You have never seen kids so happy to go to school! They treat all the kids like family. Their days are filled with arts and crafts, age appropriate lessons, lots of play time (inside and out – weather permitting), singing, dancing, delicious food. I wish I could stay there and send the kids to work! It’s never easy sending your precious babies off to be taken care of by someone else, but knowing that they are so happy to go and so well taken care of by such warm and loving people makes it that much easier.

My kid has been in stepping stone for a month now. Teachers here are very professional, caring and loving. My daughter enjoys her days there and she came back home happily everyday. Every afternoon when I pick up her, I saw the teachers clean and sanitize the classroom which is so important nowadays. The food menu is great and contains balanced nutritious food. The teachers send lots of pics and videos everyday to let us know what is going on and what did my daughter learn there. If you are looking for a daycare, this is definitely the one.

Stepping Stones has been a lot more than a daycare for our 2 year old daughter. It is a home away from home. It took a while but me and my husband finally found this place for our daughter and we are extremely happy and satisfied. My daughter absolutely loves it there. Teachers and staffs are very caring and loving. Whenever I feel I need to talk to them about how my daughter is doing at the daycare they are always there to answer my questions and address my concerns. The downtown Redmond branch of this preschool was the one we eventually picked for our child. Unfortunately, it closed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, there is another Northern Lights preschool at Willows Road in Redmond. My review is for the now defunct downtown Redmond branch.

I picked this preschool because it was nearby and I wanted a low friction and low carbon way to get to school. When I toured the school, I was impressed by the cleanliness of the school and the overall competence of the staff. During our years there, the staff turnover rate was low, and we encountered mostly warm and friendly teachers.

This school isn’t a true Montessori school as they also instructed students via worksheets. This was a plus to me as I wanted my child to experience different modes of instruction. But if you are a Montessori purist, then this school is probably not for you.

During our time there, we thought the school was well run. My child did plenty of outdoor time and lessons, as well as field trips, which were super fun for her. She also participated in the annual concert which was cute to watch.

Most of the parents I’d spoken to told me they had found this school through word-of-mouth, which I thought was a good sign.

TLDR:

• The Willows branch of Northern Lights Preschool is still in business.
• We picked this school because it was close by and clean.
• The teachers were competent and kind.
• The curriculum was a mix of Montessori and traditional (worksheets, etc.)

Kiddie Academy of Kirkland

Address: 12620 NE 85th St Suite 112, Kirkland, WA 98033

I have a few friends who enrolled their kids at this daycare. They had positive experiences there and were satisfied with the care their children received.

TLDR:

• Daycare that accepts infants

Bright Horizons Redmond

Address: 14860 NE 31st Circle Building B, Redmond, WA 98052

I know a few parents who enrolled their kids at Bright Horizons and have been pleased with the care they received. This daycare is conveniently located near the Microsoft campus. My friends haven’t reported any problems, and all reported that their kids have been happy and well-adjusted there.

TLDR:

• Near Microsoft campus
• Fairly standard daycare

Cedar Crest Academy  

Address: 17720 NE 65th St Ste 100, Redmond, WA 98052

This private school with 4 locations in the Eastside offers preschool to elementary education. It’s big on academics and extremely popular with parents who want to give their kids a leg up in school.

TLDR:

• Rigorous academics
• Private school (up to elementary grades)

Faith Lutheran School

Address: 9041 166th Avenue Northeast, Redmond, WA 98052

This preschool is located on Education Hill and I personally know two different moms who sent their kids there. Both moms cite the school’s proximity to the downtown Redmond area and good teachers as top reasons for sending their kids there.

I personally checked out this school but chose not to enroll my child there because of its Christian-based curriculum. I thought the school classrooms were cozy and the teachers competent and warm. The outdoor play area also looked safe and fun. The location is great for those living in downtown Redmond and Education Hill.

TLDR:

• Christian preschool with curriculum devoted to Christian teachings
• Cozy classrooms
• Nice outdoor play area
• Good teachers
• Convenient location to downtown Redmond and Education Hill

Montessori Children’s House

Address: 5003 218th Avenue Northeast, Redmond, WA 98053

This is probably the Montessori school I hear about the most in Redmond.  Moms who have visited the school have gushed about its beautiful farm-like campus and kind, competent teachers. One caveat: it’s about half an hour’s drive from downtown Redmond each way, so you may want to factor that into your commute.

A friend who has a child with ADHD did not have a good experience there, and eventually left the school, so YMMV.

TLDR:

• A bit of a drive from downtown Redmond
• Nice farm-like campus

The Sammamish Montessori School

Address: 7655 NE 178th Pl NE, Redmond, WA 98052

This spacious school is located right by the Redmond Target and offers preschool, kindergarten and elementary classes for kids 3 years and older. The classes are mixed-ages, and extended care is offered till 6:15pm.

I toured this school personally and thought its location in a busy area wasn’t ideal (vehicle pollution and noise). The school seemed modern and well-run, with well-maintained equipment.

They also offered convenient drive-through child drop off (I thought this was odd but probably convenient for busy parents) and several enrichment programs (require extra fees) like piano, language lessons and computer literacy.

TLDR:

• Good if you are looking for a full-service school with enrichment programs
• Drive-through child drop off (great for busy mornings?)
• Located in a busy area near Target

Eastside Little Learners (Chinese)

Address: 15821 NE 56th Way, Redmond, WA 98052

Interested in giving your child a Chinese bilingual school experience? You’ll want to look into Eastside Little Learners, a home-based daycare and preschool. There are 2 locations: Grasslawn and Marymoor, both of which are close to the Microsoft campus.

Bellevue Preschools and Daycare Centers

Tottini Discovery 

Address: 2253 140th Ave NE, Bellevue, WA 98005 

This daycare in Bellevue has excellent reviews online and is definitely worth looking into! This school offers programs for infants through pre-K, and also Korean language classes for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade! 

Tottini Discovery is now closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Growing Tree Playcare and Preschool 

Address: 11415 NE 21st St, Bellevue, WA 

Description: The Growing Tree is a popular daycare and preschool in Bellevue with programs for infants through children 6 years old. They also provide drop-in care in the afternoons for kids 30 months to 5 years old. Great for those crazy days when you need a break from your kid! Also good to know: children don’t need to be potty-trained to enroll! 

TLDR:

• Good for quick drop-in care
• Accepts infants

The Little School

Address: 2812 116th Ave NE, Bellevue, WA 98004

Description: This private school serves children 3 – 11 years old and is set on a beautiful campus in Bellevue. It’s exclusive and very expensive. I was told by one enthusiastic mom that the difference she saw in her friends’ kids who attended the Little School was astonishing, and that she’ll be sending her own daughter there when she turns 3.

TLDR:

• Beautiful campus
• Small class sizes
• Expensive and exclusive
• Not for under 3-year-olds

When should you think about kindergarten for the first time?

Many parents often wonder when it is worth paying attention to the issue of kindergarten. At first, they think that the child is still too small, and this problem will not yet affect their family. In fact, enrolling a child in kindergarten is quite simple. For the procedure of placing a child in the queue, one of the parents needs to visit the institution itself or use the electronic version of the queue. – Kindergartens of combined type: there are combined groups of full and short stays, i.e. in addition to the whole day the child is in it, there is an option to leave the baby for a few hours. Why were these groups formed in the first place? Everything is quite simple: the mother of any child needs to go to work by his 3rd full years, if at 2 years old he is sent to a short stay group, then by the right time he will already fully adapt, and there will be no problems with sick leave.

– Specialized kindergartens: These are usually established for children with health problems. They need contact and communication with their peers, but for some reason they cannot go to a regular kindergarten. Enrollment of a child in a kindergarten of a specialized type is carried out in the usual way, only the parents of such children should take care of the availability of relevant certificates confirming deviations in the health of their child.

How to register a child in kindergarten?

After reading a brief review of “How Much Does Life Cost in Silicon Valley”, I decided to share my opinion and calculations regarding the living of a family of four (two adults and two children) in Seattle.

Most IT and near IT professionals who dream or plan to move to America are thinking about Kremnieva, which is not surprising. However, often the first serious barrier is the high cost of living in the Valley.

There is a good alternative. This is Seattle, Washington. The place chosen by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos for their Microsoft and Amazon. They are accompanied by the aviation giant Boeing, the mobile operator AT&T, the Starbucks mermaid, and a dozen or so less well-known companies and brands, such as Zillow and Costco.

By the way, a brand new office skyscraper is currently under construction in the city center. This is Google, which opens its large division here opposite the Amazon headquarters.

Let’s start, perhaps, small.

Living wage

• $1700 minimum monthly charge for 2 Bedroom (living room and two bedrooms) and in less than desirable areas of Seattle. In Balview, Redmond and Kirkland, the price of such an apartment starts at $2,000.

• $300-400 – other expenses. Clothes to buy at a sale, a snack on the go, fun activities on weekends and the like.

With this format of life, you can turn to non-governmental organizations, foundations and churches for help. For example, in the Salvation Army and the like. It is important to non-state ones, because if you go for official help and sit on the neck of taxpayers, in the future you will have serious problems with obtaining loans, for example, for a car, and even more so for an apartment or house.

Total: $4500-5000 per month after taxes. If you work together with your wife, then such an income per family is real, that is, the bar is not supernatural. Unless, of course, you are going to plow as cleaners in the shopping center. However, this bar does not interest us, since already established specialists mainly migrate to the state of Washington, so we are moving on to the average level.

• $3200 – house. You can, of course, rent a 3 Bedroom apartment with an area of ​​1200 ft² (about 110 m²), but I don’t see the point anymore when you can already rent a full-fledged house on the market for that kind of money. There is such a moment: $ 3,000 per month is already such a good monthly mortgage payment, it’s a shame to give such loot just like that, it’s better to invest in your home. Therefore, when a family moves into the “above average” league, then everyone basically wants to take a house or apartment on a mortgage, but that’s a completely different story.
• $400 – utility bill will increase due to the area of ​​the property, no surprises.
• $55 – still the same Internet, at a speed of 150 Mb / s from Comcast. I don’t see much point in speeds like 300 Mb/s, 500 Mb/s or 1000 Mb/s for home internet.
• $2500 – excellent food, trips to good restaurants with the whole family or together.
• $1000 – medical insurance for all four family members. If you are already working as an FTE (full-time employee) at some Amazon, then most likely the company will cover your medicine in the form of benefits (additional “goodies” to the employment contract), and this item can be crossed out.
• $2500 – a major kindergarten for the youngest child and a good school for the older one (I predict that he has already grown up) or a first-class nanny who will develop a personal program for the younger child and will report on how the education is going.

• $900 – a good car loan for five years with a monthly payment of about $600, as well as gas and insurance.
• $1,200 Additional expenses for clothing, household appliances, and more. Or saving up for a savings account for a later vacation somewhere in Hawaii.

Total: about $12,000 per month, $200,000 per year before taxes. If you are already a senior developer, then your wife may not work, since you can easily receive $ 200 thousand a year on your own.

There is no “Rich” level in the review, since I don’t really imagine it. I hope that “yet” I do not represent. But given the large houses on Lake Washington or Sammamish starting at $ 3 million with personal moorings and boats on them, the sums are very large.

Summary

Living in Seattle is much cheaper than living in Silicon Valley. The quality of life is definitely not worse, at least according to those who just moved from the Valley to Seattle or left. Yes, the climate is cooler here, but for many this is rather a plus, because many simply cannot stand the heat in California.

Whatever you choose in the end, you need to objectively evaluate yourself and understand that just a few, cool and gifted specialists fly to the “above average” stage.

The combination of black plastic and bluish metal, as well as the chosen form factor, are very well chosen and blend perfectly with each other.

  Let’s take a closer look at the main elements of the device.

  Let’s start right away with the main thing: the case is a solid metal flask (almost like the beloved Bosch TWK1201N). Therefore, our kettle is devoid of potential weak points in which a leak may occur over time.

  The base is the most common, made of black glossy plastic.

  On the underside you can see a storage compartment (winding) for an already not too long (0. 7 m) cord, a sticker with technical information and one (!) rubber foot.

  The flask at the kettle is made of stainless steel. The finish is blue paint. In the photo, the teapot looks rather gray, but in reality it is no doubt slightly bluish.

  Inside the flask, we saw the Min and Max marks, corresponding to the volume of 0.5 and 1.7 liters, as well as one intermediate division – 1 liter. Also inside there is a mark that the flask is made of AISI 304 food grade steel.

  The case itself has double walls, and is designed to serve as a thermos. Well, let’s check how this will affect the thermal insulation.

  The handle, like the top of the body, is made of glossy black plastic. At the top of the handle is a button to open the lid.

  No special filter is provided behind the spout of the kettle: water is poured out through rather large holes.

  The lower part of the body of the device is plastic. Under the handle is a standard power lever, below is the already well-known Strix contact group and an information sticker. As usual, the kettle can be freely rotated on the base.

  The spring-loaded plastic cover (the top of it is matte, and therefore fingerprints will not be visible) silently and quite smoothly opens with a button. It closes by hand, with a rather loud pop.

  We also noticed that on the inside the lid is metallic and glossy, and therefore the air between the metal and plastic elements also partly acts as a thermos.

  The overall impression of our acquaintance with the device was positive, noticeably above average. Nothing staggers or dangles at the kettle, it is confidently held in the hand and by all indications should be a reliable and durable device.

  We did not find any flaws during visual inspection.

  Manual

  The manual for the teapot is a black and white brochure printed on quality paper. The design of the brochure is classic for Redmond.

  Everything is to the point, nothing superfluous and incomprehensible. Inside you can see the image of the kettle and its main elements, a clear description of the controls and operating rules.

  The instruction is simple, written in good Russian, easy to read and does not bother with an abundance of unnecessary information and stationery.

  Control

  Control is carried out using a classic lever, which automatically locks in the “on” position and “clicks” back after the start of active boiling (steam formation).

  Preparation for work consists in placing the base on a flat horizontal surface. If there is a characteristic “plastic” smell, the manufacturer recommends boiling and draining the water for the first time. In our case, we did it: after unpacking, our kettle emitted a rather noticeable smell.

  The use of the device was generally comfortable. No difficulties or surprises awaited us: the kettle regularly boiled water, communication with it turned out to be predictable and pleasant.

  Care

  In terms of care, our tea set is no different from any other teapot with similar specifications. According to the instructions, it must be descaled with a special tool or a slice of lemon.

  Routine maintenance consists of wiping the case and base with a damp cloth and then with a dry cloth.

  Our measurements

  During testing, we took a number of standard measurements.

  The maximum noise level we recorded was 67 dBA.

  What can we highlight from the measurement results? Firstly, not too high power, and therefore not the fastest (in comparison with other models) time for boiling water. But our kettle cools down and, in fact, for quite a long time, almost as long as another similar model with a “thermos function” – Redmond RK-M1303D.
