History

The Brooklyn Botanical Garden was founded in 1910, but the first 39 acres of land were reserved for another 1897 year. The first director was Charles Stuart Gager (Dr. Charles Stuart Gager ). The Special Children’s Education Program and Kindergarten ( Children’s Garden ) began operating in 1914, and the Japanese Garden ( Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden , architect Takeo Shiota) opened in 1915. In 1916 the Rock Garden ( Rock Garden ) [1] was founded.

To maintain all the functions of the garden in 1917, special laboratory buildings began to operate ( Laboratory Building and Conservatory , now used as the Administration Building and the Palm House Greenhouse – Palm House ). In 1925, thirty-two potted bonsai trees were donated to the garden, which became the beginning of their modern collection. The same year, the Shakespeare Garden ( Shakespeare Garden ), a gift from Henry C. Folger ( Henry C. Folger ), opens. 1939 Osborne Garden ( The Osborne Garden ) opens, donated by Mrs. Elizabeth Osborne (Mrs. Sade Elisabeth Osborne ). In 1945, the first book in the gardening series was published: Lilies and Their Culture . 1955 Fragrance Garden (designer and architect Alice R. Ireys ) [1] laid down.

In 1980, a gift from the city of Tokyo was received: a 500-year-old Shogun’s stone lantern ( Shogun lantern ), which was installed in the Japanese garden. In 1652, the Japanese feudal lord Kami Nobuteru erected this 3-ton, 10-foot-tall stone lantern in honor of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The gift was dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of sister city relations between New York and Tokyo. At 19In 89, the construction of the building of the educational center ( Education Building ) and the renovation of the Palm Greenhouse ( Palm House ) were completed. In 1992, the Rock Garden was renovated, and the Science Center ( Science Center ) was opened on Montgomery Street (109 Montgomery Street ). At the same time, the Garden presented the first award for achievements in the field of environmental protection ( Better Earth Award ).
