Lebanon /ˈlɛbəpəp/ is a city in Linn County, Oregon, United States. Lebanon is located in northwestern Oregon, southeast of Salem. The population was 15,518. Census 2010. Lebanon is adjacent to the South Santiam River on the eastern edge of the Willamette Valley, close to the Cascade Range and a 25 minute drive from any of the major cities of Corvallis and Albany. Lebanon is known for its walking and cycling trails, waterfront parks and small town character.

Census 2010

As of the census ^[4] In 2010, there were 15,518 people, 6,118 households and 3,945 families living in the city. The population density was 2,326.5 inhabitants per square mile (898.3/km ² ). There were 6,820 housing units at an average density of 1,022.5 per square mile (394.8/km). ² ). The racial makeup of the city was 91.2%. White, 0.5% African American, 1.4% Native American, 1.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.1% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.8% of the population.

There were 6,118 households out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% were married couples living together, 14.3% living with no husband present, 5.6% living without a husband wife, and 35. 5% did not have a family. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.05.

The median age in the city was 36.6 years. 25.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 9.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.9% were between 25 and 44 years old; 23.6% were between 45 and 64 years old; and 16.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender composition of the city was 47.7% male and 52.3% female.

Lebanon is served by the Lebanese Public Schools public school district, which includes the Lebanese High School. It is also home to the private East Lynn Christian Academy, which serves students from preschool through twelfth grade (PreK-12).

Western University of Medical Sciences opened its College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, Northwest in August 2011 opened the first new medical school in Oregon since the Oregon Health and Science University was founded. ^[15] The school opened with 107 students.

In 2017, Lynn Benton Community College opened its Health Services Center next to the Osteopathic College.

History

In 1847, Jeremiah and Jemima Rolston bought a pioneer lodge, claimed ownership, and built a low-rise log home in what is now Rolston Park. Nearby, on today’s Main Street, they built a shop. It soon became a stopover for gold seekers on their way to California. A village grew up around the shop, and in 1855 the couple applied for the city’s name, naming it Jeremiah’s birthplace in Lebanon, Tennessee. They also donated land to Santiam Academy, which operated as a Methodist Episcopal Church until 1906 years.

Lebanon was founded on the land of Louis Band de Santiam. Kalapuya. Like other Kalapuya tribes, the number of Santiams decreased due to malaria and other diseases even before the arrival of the Americans. In 1855, the group sold their land rights to the US government and moved to a temporary reservation on a claim owned by Ralston’s son, south of their own. There the group waited to move to the Grand Ronde Valley.

In 1859, local residents looking for a way to transport cattle to central Oregon discovered Santiam Pass. Lebanon soon found itself on another important trade route. The cattlemen of Lynn County merged Willamette Valley and Cascade Mountain Road in 1864, and campers and cattlemen alike came to rely on what became known as Santiam Wagon Road. This toll road was later replaced by US Highway 20.

In the early decades of American settlement in the Willamette Valley, transportation by water was often easier than by land. The South Santiam River was too shallow for the big boars, so in 1872 construction began on a canal to transport barges of goods between Lebanon and Albany. But the water flowed too fast for upstream shipping, and the advent of the railroad limited downstream shipping. However, today the canal is still in use, passing through the backyards of Lebanon, to provide water to the people of Albany.

Railroads helped Lebanon get goods not only to Albany, but all over the world. The Albany-Lebanon Railroad, completed in 1880, was an offshoot of the north-south Oregon and California line through Albany. The South Pacific eventually occupied these lines and rerouted the old Oregon line through Lebanon in 1910.

Beginning in the 1890s, many different agricultural and food industries flourished in the area. Eastern Oregon came to dominate wheat cultivation, but farmers in Lebanon grew orchards, berries, walnuts, hazelnuts, hops, flax, vegetables, fodder crops, turkeys, mohair, honey, and flowers for florists. Lebanon had a cheese factory, a butter factory, potato warehouses, a cannery, and driers for prunes and nuts. At 19In the 1920s, a local grass seed industry was born, and by the 1930s, Lynn County was the leading county in the US for grass seed production.

The most popular crop in Lebanon is the strawberry. By 1907, Lebanon was one of the leading strawberry growing areas in the Willamette Valley. The Lebanon Strawberry Festival, which has hosted “the world’s largest strawberry shortbread” since 1931, has been held annually since 1909. However, in 2020, only one local strawberry field will remain.”

The local lumber industry began to grow around 1900, which reduced the supply of lumber to the upper Midwest. The industry began to flourish when the Oregon and Electric Railroad was built in 1932. New sawmills were built along the line in the city as well as in the mountains. Twenty new mills opened in the city between 1937 and 1942; they made a wide variety of wood products. Paper mill, which originally produced paper from wheat straw, in 19In 1936, it doubled in size to handle logs that were rafted down the South Santiam River. The local population grew, and the Great Depression had little effect on the city.

In 1940 an even bigger boom began. That same year, Evans Products built the largest plywood mill in the world. Evansville became a station on the Oregon and Electric line. World War II increased the demand for plywood, and women took over the men’s jobs at the mill. From 1940 to 1950, the Lebanese population grew by 115 percent.

In 1952, the plywood mill, now known as Cascade Plywood, began producing Lebanite solid composite board. Residents of Lebanon began to call themselves Lebanese. Cascade Plywood has taken a dominant position in the Lebanese economy.

In the 1970s, Lebanon began to slowly decline. As excessive deforestation in the nearby forests made timber production more expensive, factories began to close. The paper mill in Lebanon was closed in 1980, the plywood mill in 1984 and a Lebanese hardwood mill in 2004. Weyerhaeuser closed the last of the major plants in 2006 and 2007. Unemployment skyrocketed, and the storefronts on Main Street remained empty.

The city’s economy has improved in the twenty-first century. Openings of the Pacific Northwest College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2011, the Edward S. Allworth Veterans Home in 2017, and the Lynn-Benton Health Services Center in 2017 have contributed to growth. Shop windows and old houses on Main Street are being remodeled, and breweries, bakeries, and other new businesses are flourishing.

Lebanon is home to the world’s largest strawberry shortcake, held as part of the annual Strawberry Festival which began in 1909. The Strawberry Festival includes the Junior Parade, the Grand Parade (featuring the Royal Strawberry Court) and the Carnival. Held on the first weekend of June.

The city has 15 landscaped parks totaling 71.5 acres (28.9ha), which provide residents with baseball, softball and football fields, as well as playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts and other resources.
