They have the same name, but are located in different countries and provinces of countries … they are separated by a border and the Great Niagara River.

The American city is in the state of New York, and the Canadian city of the same name is in the province of Ontario. I must say, on the Canadian side, there is much more life in the city. Canadians created a sort of Las Vegas there. Casino. attractions, hotels with views of Niagara. But from there, the views of the waterfalls are more interesting. The cities of Niagara Falls are named after the nearby Niagara Falls.

Until the 16th – 17th centuries, American Indians settled along the Niagara River. The name “Niagara” comes from the language of this tribe.

The word “Niagara” comes from the name of the Iroquois settlement “Ongniaahra”, which means “split land”. The Iroquois (translated as “real vipers”) of the tribe Ongiara (Ongiara) have lived here for centuries. The French called them Neutrals for their ability not to seek adventure. About 80 thousand Iroquois live in the USA, about 45 thousand live in Canada.

In 1800, the settlement of Drummondsville appeared in this place. During the Anglo-American War, Fort Chippawa and neighboring Fort Erie were occupied by American troops, but the further advance of American troops was thwarted after the defeat at the Battle of Landis Lane. And then the world learned about Niagara, and thanks to the railway, the flow of tourists increased and increased.

Near Niagara, the city is clean and polished, but there are also dirty places.

The places here are picturesque, there is something to see. Naturally, this attracts tourists, who in their free time can go to the casino…)))

Local casino. On the American side, they are an order of magnitude smaller. There is a large car park in front of the casino. There are no problems with parking here. There is even a free one nearby.

Niagara has many casinos, especially on the Canadian side. Canadians generally consider Niagara to be something like Las Vegas. And you can play and admire the waterfall, right from the windows of your hotel. On the American side, the gambling life is more modest and provincial, but it exists))) and I looked there)))

In the evening everything is lit up, but more modest in the daytime))) We go inside. There are a lot of multi-colored Christmas trees and imitation of water in the design – in principle, this is logical))) Niagara, after all, is at hand. The interior design is quite fun.

What you need to know about Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a national park in the United States. Its main attraction is a complex of three waterfalls on the Niagara River. Each of them has its own name: Horseshoe, American Falls and Veil. The falls separate the US state of New York and the Canadian province of Ontario.

The cities bordering the waterfall in both countries are called the same – Niagara Falls. Tourists are often advised to look at the wonder of nature from the Canadian side. It is believed that the view from there is more spectacular. On the American side, the view is incomplete: travelers admire the landmark from the side.

A Russian citizen needs a visa to enter Canada. I only had an American one. I did not want to bother with documents and decided that I would admire Niagara from the USA.

Life in Canada

To see the falls, you can buy a tour package or drive to one of two cities in New York State: Niagara Falls or Buffalo. There is a nature reserve in the first city, and the second is a half-hour drive from the attraction. I decided that I would go to Buffalo. It’s bigger than Niagara Falls. There is also a subway and many attractions.

The falls are about 8-9 hours by car or bus from New York. Many people come there for a couple of hours, but I advise you to spend the whole day in the park and get there right at the opening. There are many entertainments: you can go down close to the water, ride a ferry, take photos from the observation deck. The park also shows a film about waterfalls and arranges nightly light shows.

I booked one day to visit Niagara and one day to walk around Buffalo. I had enough time to see Niagara Falls, but it would be better if I booked not two, but four days for the trip. I still regret that I didn’t see many sights in Buffalo.

You should take a towel, comfortable shoes and a change of clothes with you on a trip. It’s easy to get wet when going down to the waterfall and while taking the ferry – that’s part of the fun. The park gives out free raincoats, but they do not protect one hundred percent. But the swimsuit did not come in handy for me.

When to go

The park is open all year round, but some attractions are not available in winter. For example, in January you cannot swim to the waterfall by ferry. But tickets for working attractions are two to three times cheaper than in summer.

According to the park, the waterfall turns into an icy wonderland in winter. At this time, you can watch how bizarre blocks of ice are formed from the water. There are many photos of a beautiful snowy waterfall on the Internet, but tourists write on TripAdvisor that the observation decks can be covered with snow at this time of the year. You won’t be able to fully admire the waterfalls.

Weather in Niagara Falls at different times of the year

The high season starts in April, when all attractions are open, and ends in the middle or end of October. The air temperature in the off-season is +5…18 °C.

The park administration says the best time to visit is summer. During the day the air temperature is +26…30 °C. Many tourists are dressed in shorts and T-shirts. I went to the waterfalls in June. It was warm, but cool from the water. I put on a light dress and regretted that I had not taken a warm sweater or jacket with me.

Many tourists stay to watch the light show after sunset. When the sun sets, it becomes cool: the temperature drops to + 15 … 20 ° C. Dress warmly: at this time it is easy to catch a cold.

How to get to the waterfall

With a tour group from New York. The first thing that came to my mind was to buy a tour package to the waterfalls. Prices for organized trips start at $130⁣ (R9490) and go up to $700⁣ (R51100). The cost depends on the season: in summer, some tours are more expensive. The price is also affected by the duration of the trip and conditions, such as the number of stars in the hotel.

Tours to Niagara Falls

A one-day tour without an overnight stay in a hotel will cost about $200⁣ (14,600 R). Tourists get to the national park by bus, spend several hours at the waterfalls and come back. The price includes one attraction and an excursion. I know from experience that such long trips without rest are very tiring.

If the tour is inexpensive, the hotels are far from the falls, and the guide can speak English with a strong accent . If the hotel is near the waterfall and the trip includes an excursion, the price rises to $400⁣ (29,200 R).

A day trip by plane from New York to the falls and back will cost ⁠700-⁠900$⁣ (⁠51,100-⁠65,700 R). The $200⁣ (R12,860) difference is the cost of a 10-minute helicopter flight over the falls. The price of the tour includes an excursion. The same helicopter flight from Manhattan costs $10,400⁣ (759200 R). The helicopter is designed for three people, and the price does not include rides in the park.

I was thinking of choosing an inexpensive bus tour. At first, this option seemed attractive to me: you don’t need to plan anything and study the route, the guides will show you everything and take you where you need to go. But then I read the reviews of travelers, studied the conditions of the trip, written in small print, and realized that the game was not worth the candle. Food, museum entrances, park rides, tips and additional fees are not included in the tour price.

In fact, you will have to spend two or three times more. Participants of cheap tours also complained that there was no toilet on the bus, they had to pay additional fees like tips of $10⁣ (730 R), food at food courts was expensive and tasteless. But the main disadvantage is the rush. Travelers were given too little time to admire Niagara Falls.

By plane. The flight from New York to Buffalo takes an hour and a half. Airplane tickets are sold on Orbitz.com. A flight on a United budget flight in February 2020 to June cost $101⁣ (7373 R). The cost of one piece of baggage weighing up to 23 kg is $35⁣ (2550 R). You can take a bag that fits under the seat for free. The Delta flight is only $8⁣ (584 R) more expensive, and you are allowed into the cabin with a bag weighing up to 7 kg.

In February 2020, a flight from Los Angeles to Buffalo for June cost $133⁣ (R9709). The journey with a transfer in Detroit will take 8.5 hours. The ticket price from Chicago is $115⁣ (R8395), from San Francisco it is $160⁣ (R11680).

What you need to know about low-cost airlines

All the listed flights are low-cost flights, so luggage will have to be paid separately. Even on planes, most often paid food. It is better to buy tickets as early as possible, for example, six months in advance. The closer to the departure date, the more expensive the flight.

By train. I like Amtrak’s American trains: they are comfortable and remind us of our Sapsan. The carriages have soft folding seats, each seat has sockets for charging equipment. The toilets are always clean and there is liquid soap. The second course in the buffet costs about $10⁣ (730 R). This is the standard price in an American cafe.

By train from Pennsylvania Station in New York to Buffalo or Niagara Falls Station can be reached in 8-9 hours. A one-way ticket in February for June 2020 cost $68⁣ (4964 R).

Trains can be late: I only found out about this in America. Once I was supposed to go to Chicago, and the boarding was announced an hour later than indicated on the ticket.

Bus is the most economical way to get to the national park, which I chose. I bought Megabus round-trip tickets for only $22.5⁣ (R1643). For an additional payment of 2⁠—⁠10 $⁣ (146⁠—⁠730 R) you can book a specific seat, but I did not do this. The rest of the passengers take their seats in turn.

It is very important to buy tickets in advance: the closer the day of travel, the more expensive they are. I planned a trip for June in April. When I got on the bus, there were Americans in line who paid almost five times more for tickets than I did. They paid the fare at the last moment.

The bus station in New York is located under the open sky. There are not even benches – you have to stand or squat. I came an hour before departure and greatly regretted it. It started to rain, and there was nowhere to hide. When the landing began, I was already pretty cold. But I was one of the first in line, and I got a good seat.

I traveled several times by Megabus bus to different cities of America, and the trip was always comfortable. The salon has free Wi-Fi, sockets for charging a laptop and a phone, and a dry closet. The bus is double decker with comfortable seats. From time to time, the driver stops at stations where you can buy food, drinks and something for the journey, such as headphones or a book.

How to travel cheaply in the USA

Greyhound buses are also available from New York to the falls. I traveled around America in them, and it was not so comfortable. The entire journey on the bus smelled from the toilet. I was sitting at the beginning of the salon, but I still felt an unpleasant smell. I can’t imagine what it was like for those whose seats were next to the toilet.

I always take a small blanket on the bus: the air conditioning is too strong there. I had a tuna sandwich and a thermos of tea with me, but I still got hungry on the way. During the parking lot, I bought fish and chips and a salad. Lunch cost $12.28 (about $896 R). At another station, I took a cup of fruit for $3.99 (about R291)

How to get to Niagara Falls from Buffalo

In 2010, I was already in another American Grand Canyon National Park. The trip back and forth on a mini-bus from Flagstaff to the park cost me about $60 – at that time about 1800 R. Expensive.

I thought that a trip to Niagara Falls would also cost a few tens of bucks, but it turned out that you can get to the falls by regular city bus number 40. The ticket costs only 2 $⁣ (146 R). If you buy a pass for $5⁣ (365 R), you can use Buffalo public transport unlimitedly and go to the falls at least four times. I bought the pass from the machine at the metro stop.

During the day, buses run to the falls about every half hour. The hostel advised me to take the bus at the Metro Transportation Center or Greyhound Station and get off at the nearest 1st and Rainbow stop to the park. I drove from Buffalo to the waterfalls in about 40-50 minutes.

Way back. When it got dark and I got ready to go back, the bus didn’t come. Two Englishmen were sitting with me at the bus stop. They said they came 10 minutes earlier than me.

Half an hour has passed. Crowds of happy Indians boarded tourist buses and went to their hotels. The two unfortunate Englishmen and I continued to sit at a bus stop 30 km from Buffalo. It was getting cold. My clothes and hair were wet from the spray of the waterfall, and the bench at the bus stop was icy. The visitor center was closed – there was nowhere to warm up. The Englishmen and I did not lose hope and reasoned as follows: the bus must have been late or broken down, which means that a new one will definitely arrive.

We waited an hour, then another. I couldn’t leave in any other way: I didn’t have enough cash for a taxi, the money was on my bank card. Calling Uber also failed: the phone was dead. I did not dare to catch a ride at night.

As a result, we sat outside for three hours and left on the last bus only after midnight, tired, cold and angry. I will always remember this stop – a gray bench under the open sky and an advertisement for a massage parlor with a carefree smiling woman attached to it.

Irregular public transport is the main disadvantage of small towns in the United States. Locals mostly drive cars, and buses rarely run. In Orlando, I had to wait for a bus for two hours. In order not to get stuck in the middle of the night on the waterfalls, I advise you to grab money for a taxi and a power bank.

It is better to take a place near the shore in advance. I didn’t foresee this: when the show started, it turned out that the audience was standing in several rows. But after the fireworks, the backlight is turned on again, the tourists disperse, and you can take a photo.

Attractions

There are several paid attractions at the waterfalls. If you want to visit them all, I advise you to buy a Discovery Pass combo ticket for $49⁣ (3577 R) during the season. This will save you about $20. The ticket price includes Maid of the mist, Cave of the winds, walking around the park on a tourist bus, visiting the aquarium, Discovery center and watching a movie about waterfalls on the big screen. In winter, you can download discount coupons for paid entertainment in the park. I will tell you about each attraction in more detail.

Maid of the Mist is a ferry that swims close to the waterfall, where tourists are sprayed from head to toe with water. The sensations are unforgettable: you are already completely wet, but you want more.

The ride has been around since 1846. Theodore Roosevelt, Marilyn Monroe, Mikhail Gorbachev and Princess Diana admired the waterfall from the ferry. Separately pay $1.25⁣ (91 P) in this case will not be necessary. After the ferry, tourists climb the stage, from which a good angle for filming opens.

A single ferry ticket costs $19.25⁣ (R1405). The attraction is open from May to early November from 9:00 to 17:00-20:00. It is better to check the schedule on the website: it may change depending on the season and holidays.

Passengers are given free raincoats, but they do not protect from water. The waterfall washes away any makeup in a minute. I like it. I would gladly ride again.

The Cave of the winds attraction also allows you to get wet under the jets of water. Tourists go down in an elevator and approach the foot of the waterfall on specially built scaffolds.

The name of the attraction is translated as “cave of the winds”. I thought that tourists were allowed into the cave, but this is not so. She really was in this place at the beginning of the 20th century. From the cave, tourists looked at the waterfall from the inside, but then the entrance was covered with stones.

Niagara Adventure Theater is a cinema where you can watch a half-hour film about Niagara Falls, its history, legends and people who conquered the elements. The film is shown on a 14-meter screen. A ticket costs 12 $⁣ (876 R) or 10 $⁣ (730 R) if you buy it on the website. The show is repeated every 45 minutes.

What to see in Buffalo

When I got off the bus in Buffalo, I decided to walk to the hostel. The bearded man at the bus stop looked at me for a long time, and then spoke.

Are you homeless? – he asked.

I imagined myself from the side – exhausted after a long bus ride, in baggy clothes and with a heavy backpack – and it became very funny to me. During a week in New York, I managed to forget what it is like to be in a small city in the USA, where you seem like a curiosity to the locals and everyone tries to talk to you.

I envisioned Buffalo as a low-rise tourist town like Stowe in Vermont. It turned out that this is a metropolis with high-rise buildings, a theater district, nice shops and an observation deck. The downtown is clean and well-groomed, the streets smell of flowers, smoke, something pleasant and elusive.

Buffalo is the second largest city in the state with a population of 256,000. There are no crowds on the central streets, as in New York. Here you can freely walk and relax from the hustle and bustle. The city is known for buildings of the 19th-20th centuries

Public transport is developed in Buffalo: there are buses and a subway line. Travel on the ground is free. You have to pay only if you use underground stations.

Single ticket costs $2⁣ (R146), day pass is $5⁣ (R365). It operates on buses and subways. You can buy tickets in vending machines at metro stations, in Top’s, Dash Market stores. The metro operates from 5:00 to 1:00 on weekdays and from 7:00 on weekends.

You can pay for the bus in cash, but you need to take change: drivers don’t give change.

Many tourists come to Buffalo because it is near Niagara Falls, but there is something to see in the city itself. I was not ready for the fact that there are so many interesting things in a small town. Ideally, it is better to plan two or three days for exploring Buffalo and one day for waterfalls so as not to rush anywhere. Here’s what I recommend to see in the city.

Buffalo City Hall is a major city landmark and one of America’s tallest municipal buildings built in the Art Deco style. The interior is very expressive: with stained glass windows, frescoes and carved stone figures illustrating the life of settlers and Indians. I remember the stone frogs on one of the walls, the patterns on the elevator doors and the stained-glass window-sun.

Every weekday at 12:00 there are free tours in the building. The tour lasts one hour. The guide talks about the city, the history and architecture of the city hall, shows the lobby, the mayor’s office, the chambers of the general council. The tour ends at the observation deck, which offers a bird’s-eye view of the city.

Hostels in small American cities differ from New York ones for the better. It is quiet there at night, the rooms are more spacious, and the staff is friendlier than in the metropolis. There are few tourists, and the multi-bed room is often half empty.

I’m staying at the Buffalo Niagara hostel. It is located in downtown Buffalo, on Main Street, close to Shea’s theater and major attractions. For two nights I paid $60⁣ (4380 R).

I liked the large rooms with high ceilings, the silence and the intimate atmosphere. Buffalo Niagara also has a kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave and stove. Free tea, coffee and oatmeal for breakfast for guests. In the living room you can watch Netflix or movies on VHS the old fashioned way. In the basement for 5 $⁣ (365 R) you can wash and dry clothes.

Together with a cup of cappuccino and cookies, breakfast cost me $14.34⁣ (R1047).

At the Anchor bar, I took buffalo wings with celery and cheese and potato salad – all together came out to 18. 97 $⁣ (1385 R). In the Chinese establishment Dragon Express – soup with an egg for $ 3 ⁣ (219 R). It was cheap, but it turned out to be oversalted.

2. It is worth taking some spare clothes with you to the waterfalls. After walking on a boat, clothes do not have time to dry, and in the evening it quickly gets cold – it is easy to catch a cold.
3. To enjoy the light show at the waterfall, it is better to book a place near the shore in advance. People gather very quickly, and because of their backs it will be hard to see the show.
4. If you want to try all the activities at the waterfalls and save money, buy a combo ticket.
5. Don’t rely heavily on the Buffalo to Niagara bus. If you return to the city at night, charge your phone and leave money on Uber.
