About Burke Presbyterian Church Preschool

Our preschool provides a loving and caring atmosphere in which each child is encouraged to develop as a unique person with a positive self-image. We nurture all aspects of a child’s growth, including social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual development.

We understand that children develop at unique timetables that are often uneven and unrelated to age. They also thrive in learning environments that nurture:

  • an emerging sense of self and empathy for others,

  • both structured and unstructured learning, and

  • the disposition to learn by one’s self and with others as an enjoyable lifelong pursuit.

In our program, children interact with their immediate world as a catalyst for learning, and they use play to explore, experiment, and discover the world around them.

Our staff is carefully selected for its warmth, dedication, and ability to empathize with children. Our teachers make every effort to provide a secure setting for preschoolers in their care. We recruit teachers with a heart for early education, a love for young children, and a passion for ensuring school readiness.

We adhere to all state and county requirements.

Albert Einstein

“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood. ”

Fred Rogers

We Offer Research-Based Approaches to Learning

BPC Preschool applies child development theories and early brain research to a unique teacher support model, child experience, and family engagement model.

THE VIEW OF THE CHILD

Every child is full of potential, naturally curious, and essential to the community. BPC Preschool embraces individual differences.

THE ROLE OF THE ENVIRONMENT

Children explore their environment to experiment with ideas, manipulate materials, and construct knowledge.

THE ROLE OF THE FAMILY

Families are central to the intellectual and social growth of the child. Family culture and beliefs add beauty to the school community. As a school family, BPC Preschool partners with parents as the first, primary, and most crucial teacher the child will have.

THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER

The teacher is a learner alongside the child. As a researcher and guide, the teacher offers resources and support. BPC Preschool teachers act with “intention.” Activities are planned with specific goals for a child’s development. BPC Preschool teachers and staff select every activity, song, and item in the classrooms with purpose and intentionality.

THE ROLE OF THE CHURCH

Burke Presbyterian Church Preschool is a ministry of Burke Presbyterian Church. We are excited to have been serving our community for 40 years and welcome children of all races, faiths, ethnic backgrounds, and nationalities.

As a church-sponsored preschool, we seek to reflect Christian values in all our activities. We endeavor to provide opportunities for the child to experience God’s love and a life of wholeness.

A Message From Our Director

Dear Family,

Thank you for considering Burke Presbyterian Preschool. It is our honor to have the opportunity to partner with you in these early years of your child’s learning and development. When your child enters our preschool, they will join a new family – their School Family. School Family is a term we use to describe our classroom and broader school community. The School Family, in partnership with you, can help to create the best possible learning experience for your child.

When a child comes to school, they have three questions:

Am I safe? Am I loved? What can I learn?

I want to introduce you to Conscious Discipline, a comprehensive classroom management and social-emotional learning tool used throughout our school. Our trained teachers and staff have created learning environments where children will know, “Yes, I am safe,” and “Yes, I am loved.” From this foundation of safety and caring, children are ready for joyful learning, the business of serious playing, and to begin learning how to navigate their world.

While I am partial, I love our small School Family! I encourage you to visit several preschools and find the one that feels like home to your family. Should that be Burke Presbyterian Church Preschool, I will be excited and honored to welcome you as a part of our School Family.

From my heart to your heart, I wish you well,

Anndra Rowland  Ed.D

DIVERSE LEARNING

 environments!

Preschool 2

Older twos and young threes are naturally inquisitive and very busy, and they are also a joy to teach! Our teachers plan a creative, interactive, and fun curriculum for our Preschool 2 classes. It is our goal to expand your child’s imagination and help him or her develop through activities that address all learning domains. We engage preschoolers in their first classroom learning experience through a variety of activities.

Children must be 2.5 by September 5th. Students should be well on their way to being fully potty trained by September.

Preschool 3

Three-year-olds are special! They are transitioning from parallel to interactive play, and their language capacity is blossoming. They are becoming much more mobile and learning to show genuine affection and concern for their peers.

Three-year-olds are no longer toddlers, yet are not ready for a rigorous Pre-K program. BPC Preschool educators understand that three-year-olds’ cognitive, physical, and social skills are significantly unique from other ages. Their language and understanding of the world are rapidly developing. We help them grow in these areas while also helping them feel comfortable in a classroom setting away from their caregivers.

Children must be 3 by September 30th and Restroom Independent.

Preschool 4

BPC Preschool is excited to offer this new program for the 2023-2024 school year! Preschool 4 will meet three afternoons a week and is ideal for four-year-olds who will have their first preschool experience or plan to have an extra year before kindergarten.

Our Preschool 4 program focuses on Social-Emotional Learning and gaining experience in a classroom environment.

Children learn to take turns, make choices, recognize limits, try new activities, follow directions and feel comfortable in a classroom away from their parents. They also will learn to use art as a form of expression, develop large and fine motor skills, build language and literacy skills, and develop math and science concepts via hands-on exploration.

Preschool 4 students must turn 4 by December 31st.

Pre-K

Four-year-olds are ready for more challenging activities and opportunities to exercise their emerging literacy skills in preparation for kindergarten. Our teachers know that children this age learn best when the activities are meaningful and intentional. They plan for an environment that engages the whole child and is informed by the student’s interests.

Emerging literacy development is supported through various opportunities for listening, talking, writing, and sharing stories. Fine motor skills are improved using pencils, scissors, small manipulatives, and art materials. We foster curiosity through multiple senses, books, music, science experiments, comparing, sorting, categorizing, and beginning graphing.

Children learn beginning math skills through counting, creating sets, and identifying shapes. Observing the world around them helps children learn to exercise their scientific eyes.

We will continue to grow in our social skills by helping others and being part of a group. The emphasis is that children will work towards gaining the independence necessary for Kindergarten readiness.

PK students must be 4 by September 31st.

Transitional Kindergarten

Also new to Burke Presbyterian Preschool for the upcoming school year is Transitional Kindergarten. TK is a program designed for children who either narrowly miss the cut-off for public kindergarten or is taking an extra year before entering formal school. After completion in Transitional Kindergarten, parents will have the option of enrolling their child in public Kindergarten or First Grade.

The class is taught by a veteran FCPS Kindergarten teacher of 13 years. The curriculum closely aligns with that of FCPS; however, the small class size and teacher-to-student ratio allow for much more in-depth individualized instruction and hands-on learning and exploration.

Children must be 5 by December 31st, and all enrollment is at the director’s discretion.
