Preschool | JCC East Bay
Program Overview
Philosophy
The JCC East Bay’s award-winning preschool is an inclusive, play-based, nurturing environment. We believe that it is important to focus on the whole child, integrating a variety of activities into our daily schedule and connecting Jewish values with relationship-based inclusion practice and anti-bias education to teach the social-emotional and critical thinking skills that are the foundation of lifelong learning.
Intentional play-based learning allows children to make sense of the world around them through active involvement with their environment. To facilitate this kind of learning, we
- Provide opportunities for children to explore and interact freely with different materials and ideas, both independently and collaboratively, encouraging children to develop their communication and social- emotional skills that are the building blocks for life.
- Encourage children to practice taking risks and support them in building their resilience.
- Work to develop compassion and empathy in all children so the feel included, accepted, and valued.
- Honor and respect differences in the classroom by using a culturally responsive approach to teaching using materials, activities and language.
Keeping with our core Jewish values of hachnasat orchim (welcoming and inclusive) and kavod and chesed (respect and loving kindness), we intentionally incorporate inclusion and relationship-based practice into our program.

Core Jewish Values
Respect & Loving Kindness (Kavod & Chesed): We practice every moment to be our best selves by respecting others and treating everyone with care and kindness. We learn with and from one another which helps us to understand others around us, and the impact of our words and actions.
Curiosity and Awe (Hit’orerut): We foster questions and endless explorations to help children discover and build connections with the world around them. We create environments for children to learn in new, fun ways and to develop critical thinking skills.
Responsibility (Tikkun Olam): We understand and discuss the importance of our job as caretakers of our home and earth. By teaching and fostering accountability, we learn how to take care of ourselves, each other, and the world we live in.
Justice (Tzedek): We empower children to advocate for themselves and to lead with compassion and empathy for others. We model positive ways to address conflicts and repair actions that have hurt others.
Community (Kehillah): We work to build a sense of belonging within our classrooms and community with parents as partners and children as capable learners. We cultivate emotional competency, consent, and social growth that guides the foundation of new and lasting friendships.
Welcoming and Inclusive (Hachnasat Orchim): We create an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and valued. We teach from a culturally competent perspective by embracing and discussing differences as strengths, allowing everyone to be their authentic selves.
Emergent Curriculum with a Jewish Lens
Our Emergent curriculum aligns with Jewish holiday themes. For example, we might use tashlich to foster discussions about how to repair a relationship or an interaction with a friend. On Purim it is customary to make mishloach manot—gift baskets of food for other people, and to give funds to those who need support. We can use this as an opportunity to work together to make gifts and also have discussions about how to support others in need.
Every Friday, each classroom shares the joy of challah making and celebrating Shabbat with songs, blessings, and rituals. Some classes begin their week with Havdalah, delineating “time away from school” from “time at school” with song and blessings over spices, candle flames, and “wine.” These rituals allow children to come together as a community and to practice mindfulness.
Co-constructing Learning
The JCC East Bay Preschool believes that children are capable, competent learners who are full of potential; therefore, we work with them to co-construct knowledge. We provide a variety of activities and materials appropriate for the children’s age and developmental level, and help them to be enthusiastic learners who become independent, self-confident, and inquisitive. Academics are built into the play experiences in a developmentally appropriate way, with the role of the teacher as the facilitator. Children learn from first-hand experiences, exploring and discovering in imaginative and playful ways. Below are examples of play-based activities that guide learning and that connect to Jewish values.

- Families that are registered in the JCC East Bay Afterschool programs
- JCC East Bay Preschool and Afterschool alumni families
How do you handle poor air quality?
The JCC East Bay has a comprehensive Air Quality decision-making matrix that we employ when the AQI reaches unhealthy levels. Generally speaking, for AQI levels between 51 and 150 (Moderate and Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups), we will take more breaks and do less intense activities outdoors, and also decide to move activities indoors. We will utilize HEPA filters when indoors to filter out air particles from the outdoors. At Unhealthy levels (AQI 151-200), we will assess the current levels and hourly projections to determine program closures. If we decide to keep the building and programs open within this level, we will keep everyone indoors and utilize HEPA filters. At Very Unhealthy levels and beyond (201+), we will close our building and suspend all of our programs. As air quality changes rapidly and is hard to predict, we will take building and program closures on a day-by-day basis. We are in constant communication with local school districts and will also consult with them on AQI if/when appropriate.

Our Testimonials
What Parents Say
Rosie’s preschool is so great! We’ve had our toddler there since he was 4 months old. He gets personalized care every day. We get updates from the daycare on eating; diapering; when they go to the park, and what he needs on a day-to-day basis.
He loves seeing his friends there every day. He gets fed, learns English and Spanish, and is growing into a wonderful (and energetic) little dude. Would recommend it to anyone.
Tazo I.

Eleni Kounalakis vs. Hernandez
Eleni Kounalakis
“I am running for lieutenant governor to lead California to a better and stronger future. California values and diversity underpin and drive our economy forward and truly make California great. We must continue to pursue policies that grow our economy while ensuring that it works better for everyone, not just those at the top.”
Affordable Homes
“I’m a homebuilder. I have spent nearly two decades building and building homes for middle class families and in the Sacramento area. I know the answer to California’s housing crisis is building more affordable homes for California families.
Possibility to afford household chores for all families. In addition, it is important for every healthy community that first responders, police officers, firefighters, public school teachers and health care workers can live close to where they work.”
Affordable College
“The Lieutenant Governor plays an important role in California higher education as a member of the UC Board of Regents and the CSU Board of Regents. I am determined to fight to reduce the cost of higher education for California students.
Here in California we have one of the best higher education systems in the world, but with soaring costs, college is out of reach for too many of our children. It’s time to change that.”
Universal Health
“Education remains the primary tool for getting a well-paid job and supporting a family. Senator Feinstein believes Washington needs to do more to improve the quality of K-12 education and make higher education more accessible. ”
LGBTQ+, racial equality and women’s rights
“As a mother, mentor of other women and activist for marriage equality, gender and racial equality, I have devoted my entire life to public service and the fight for equal rights. I am proud to have crossed support in this race and there is no doubt that I will fight for racial and gender equality in politics, government and every aspect of society.
We need more protection and more advocates and we need to empower people from marginalized communities to have a stronger voice in our state government.”
Immigration
“My father came to the United States when he was 14, alone and penniless. He became a farm worker in the fields of Lodi, California and then went to Sacramento State University on a waiter’s salary.
He started his own business and I proudly worked side by side with him for almost 18 years, rising from project manager to president. I have personally walked the path of the American Dream and deeply understand the value of California’s immigrant communities. ”
how old is Nia Kay from the rap game
Wednesday
“As an outdoor enthusiast and avid hiker, I’ve been fascinated by California’s biodiversity and natural beauty all my life. I was immensely proud when President Obama signed the Paris Climate Agreement in 2016, an important step forward in the global climate change effort. But as California continues to lead the way in environmental protection, the Trump administration is setting our country back.”
Affordable Child Care
“I am proud to be a member of the California First Five Commission on Early Childhood Education. As a mother of two sons, I know how important it is to provide children with the care and education they need. California can and should do more for 0-3 year olds.
We must support safe and prosperous kindergartens and kindergarten workers. If elected, I will also fight for universal preschool so that when our children enter kindergarten, they are prepared and ready. ”
Infrastructure & Universal Broadband
“I spent 18 years in the housing industry building infrastructure and creating planned communities for hard working families in California. I understand the need for a secure, reliable and modern infrastructure. Infrastructure projects are not only a smart investment in our future, but also the creation of much-needed and well-paid jobs now.
That’s why I support Bill 1 and Proposition 69Senate to Invest in Restoring California’s Highways, Bridges, and Other Transportation Infrastructure. It’s time to get serious about California’s crumbling infrastructure by significantly increasing our investment in our roads, canals, reservoirs, dams and bridges.”
Hernandez
Education
“Senator Ed Hernandez wants California, as the world’s sixth largest economy, to have an education system that will prepare our children for the ever-evolving global economy of the 21st century. He is the first college graduate in his family and believes that education is the greatest equalizer in our society. That’s why he advocates for the reinvestment of our public K-12 schools, community colleges and public universities.”
Jobs and Economics
“As a small business owner, Senator Ed Hernandez knows the day-to-day challenges small businesses face. He believes that while the government can create an enabling environment to stimulate business growth and economic opportunities, businesses still create jobs. Senator Hernandez also believes that the tide is lifting all boats.”
Health
“Expanding access to affordable, quality health care is what motivated Dr. Ed Hernandez, O. at age 49years, he first ran for an elected office in the State Assembly in 2006. As a practicing optometrist, State Senator Ed Hernandez has seen firsthand the devastation the lack of access to healthcare has on our communities.
He was a champion of expanding access to quality, affordable health care, reducing overall health care costs, and addressing supply shortages across our state. ”
Bobby Lee and Khalila Kuhn
Wednesday
“Senator Ed Hernandez believes the climate change debate is over and our planet is at a critical crossroads when it comes to resolving this global crisis. As a member of the California State Legislature, he supports the state’s forward-thinking efforts to address this issue directly and also advocates for environmental justice legislation addressing local sources of pollution and contamination.”
Public Safety
“Throughout his time in public office, Senator Ed Hernandez has always put public safety first. He believes that without safe neighborhoods and communities, children can’t go to school, businesses can’t flourish, and the economies of our regions come to a standstill.”
Immigrant rights
“The grandson of immigrants, Senator Ed Hernandez believes that in a country founded and built by immigrants, we should embrace, promote, and celebrate our great diversity, not demonize immigrants or individual families. ”
“Senator Ed Hernandez believes in total equality for ALL Californians. As a state legislator, he has supported measures that promote marriage rights, equal housing rights, and equal pay for equal work that is independent of and independent of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion.”
Government reform
“Senator Hernandez is a leading advocate for reform because he believes that the public’s lack of trust in government integrity is the fastest way to undermine faith in democracy.”

Kindergarten and school
Preschool is considered optional in California. Usually you have to pay for kindergarten, but there are subsidies or free places for low-income families. If a state institution accepts children from four years old, then a child can be sent to a private kindergarten as early as three months. However, classes there will cost from 0.5 to 2.5 thousand dollars a month.
At the age of six, the child must go to school – the authorities must provide him with a place in a local educational institution. The only exam that children from foreign families must pass is the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). According to its results, an appropriate curriculum will be selected for the child.

The average private school costs $13,000 a year: $10,000 for elementary school and $18,000 for high school. The cost of education in the most prestigious institutions can reach 30 thousand dollars a year.
