At least 15 police officers in the US city of Baltimore were injured in clashes with demonstrators after the funeral of African-American Freddie Gray turned into a spontaneous protest.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has declared a state of emergency and activated the state’s National Guard to help police restore order in Baltimore.

City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said there will be a curfew from 10 pm to 5 am local time Tuesday (02:00-09:00 GMT Wednesday). “This means that if you are outside at this time, then it can only be for one of two reasons: either you have a medical emergency, or you are going to work,” she clarified.

The curfew will be in effect for a week.

Helicopter footage shows dozens of people on the streets clashing with police.

Demonstrators threw stones and bottles at the police.

The police arrested at least 27 people.

At nightfall, a massive fire broke out in a building in east Baltimore, recently built (and according to other sources, not even completed yet) for various social institutions.

Baltimore Mayor’s spokesman Kevin Harris said the fire was riot-related and that the building housed a youth and family support center.

Black Baltimore resident Freddie Gray, 25, suffered serious and still unexplained neck injuries during police custody and later died in hospital. His death on April 19 sparked protests in the city.

Protesters started the march from the place where Gray was arrested on 12 April. According to the police, Gray, walking down the street and meeting the gaze of a police patrol, suddenly rushed to run. When they caught up with him and put him in a police van, he allegedly began to behave violently, and then he was handcuffed hand and foot.

It is unclear exactly when and how Gray suffered serious neck and spinal injuries that left him in a coma and died a week later.

Earlier, Gray’s family lawyer William Murphy reported that his client’s spine had been practically severed. City officials have vowed to investigate the incident.

Police Captain Erik Kowalczyk said the police are trying to bring the situation under control and are ready to use tear gas.

This is one of the largest protests in the history of the city.
