What is known about the shooter from Las Vegas
World
Stephen Paddock, who shot the visitors of the music festival in Las Vegas, at first glance, led an ordinary prosperous life. What could have made him commit such a terrible crime?
Stephen Paddock, a former Nevada accountant with no previous convictions, opened fire on people in Las Vegas on the night of October 2. 59 people died, more than 500 were injured. This shooting incident is already recognized as the bloodiest in modern US history. The police are wondering about the motives of the shooter, whose act shocked the whole world.
Las Vegas: more than fifty people shot to death
Investigators determined that Paddock fired from the window of a hotel room located on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. He shot at the visitors of the music country music festival Route 91 Harvest held outdoors. The 64-year-old pensioner has been living in a hotel room since September 28. When the police broke into Paddock’s room after the shooting, he was already dead. The police believe he committed suicide. Information about the arsenal found during the examination of the room varies. Some reports mention 16, others 19 firearms. Including about guns and ammunition capable of penetrating police body armor.
After the attack in Las Vegas Photo: Getty Images/E.Miller
The reason why Paddock opened fire on people is not yet clear. No terrorist motives have been identified. At the very least, the FBI has said that a recent investigation has found no links to terrorist organizations and suggests that Paddock is a loner. He made no demands. Nothing suggests that he sympathized with radical Islamist groups.
According to the US Department of Homeland Security, there is no credible evidence that similar attacks are being planned elsewhere. However, the terrorist group “Islamic State” (IS) has already stated that the massacre in Las Vegas is on its account, and the shooter became its warrior a few months ago. However, for ISIS, this is a common PR tactic – when an individual or a group of people commit certain crimes that could be declared a terrorist attack, ISIS claims its role in them.
Arms depot and no offense
Prior to the events of October 2, Paddock had not been seen by law enforcement officials in any act of violence. The only entry in the police database associated with him concerns a traffic violation from many years ago. Police raided his home in Mesquite, a small Nevada town located 130 kilometers from Las Vegas. About 20 more small arms were found there (together with only 42 found in the hotel), thousands of rounds of ammunition, multiply charged magazines, and explosive packages. Ammonium nitrate, which is used in the manufacture of explosives, was found in the car. This was announced by Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo.
Shooter’s brother, Eric Paddock Photo: picture-alliance/AP Photo/J. Raoux
Interrogation of Paddock’s family members did little to help the police figure out the perpetrator’s motives. His brother Eric, in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, said that he could not imagine what reasons prompted the 64-year-old pensioner to arrange a shooting. He was neither a religious fanatic nor a political fanatic. He had neither a special penchant for militarism, nor a cult of weapons, although he had some arsenal, says Eric Paddock. In Las Vegas, according to his brother, Stephen appeared only on short visits to play in the casino. The media also reported that Stephen Paddock had a hunting license issued in the state of Alaska, where it is allowed to hunt large game – deer or bear.
Wealthy Citizen
Eric Paddock describes his brother as a wealthy man who could afford to travel around the world and play big poker. “He sent sweets to his mother, loved, like many, burritos and did not even give a reason to fine him for improper parking. We have no idea what happened. It was like an asteroid crashed on our family,” says Eric Paddock.
He explains that his and Stephen’s father, Benjamin, was known to the police as a bank robber, was in prison at 19In 1969, he was able to escape from there, he was wanted, and in the reports of that time he was characterized as a “psychopath”. But he and his brother did not maintain contact with their father.
Stephen Paddock lived in Mesquite with a woman whom Eric Paddock calls his brother’s life partner. At the time of the massacre perpetrated by the shooter in Las Vegas, she, according to police, was abroad (according to CNN, in the Philippines).
Festival in sight
Why Stephen Paddock chose music festival goers as his victims is also not yet clear. Usually this annual event lasts three days, and tens of thousands of people manage to visit it. According to police, at the time of the start of the shelling, that is, at approximately 22:00 local time (October 1), a concert of country music star Jason Aldin was taking place on the main stage of the festival, and the number of those present reached 22,000 people. Eyewitnesses report bursts of automatic weapons, chaos and panic.

“We were listening to the concert, enjoying it, but then we heard something that sounded like firecrackers,” festival goer Joy Pitz told the local Las Vegas Sun newspaper. Then the performer Jason Aldean ran off the stage and everyone who was near the hotel began to look for shelter.
Robert Hayes, a Los Angeles firefighter, was standing near the stage. At first, he decided that the problems arose with the music installation. And when I realized that we were talking about shots, I was one of the first to help others. In an interview with Fox News, he described the picture of what was happening as a battlefield. When asked if the perpetrator was an experienced shooter, he replied that shooting at tens of thousands of visitors did not require much experience.
“Act of Absolute Evil” and American unity
The Las Vegas bloodshed has already resonated throughout the world, primarily in America itself. US President Donald Trump called it “an act of absolute evil” and urged the country to unity. He announced that he intended to come to the scene of the tragedy on Wednesday, October 4. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister Theresa May, a number of other high-ranking politicians, as well as the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, expressed their condolences to the families of the victims.
Until recently, it was not known whether there were German citizens among the victims. The German Foreign Ministry said that the German embassy in Washington is in close contact with the American departments and that it cannot yet report anything about possible German victims.
Discussion about the free sale of weapons in the United States
The Las Vegas incident is the bloodiest of many similar cases in the United States. Yet despite frequent reports of shootings being fired at unarmed people in schools or universities, and the recent increase in barrage and public event shooting attacks, Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, failed to overcome Republican resistance when he attempted to to tighten the rules on the sale and possession of weapons for civilians.
Donald Trump, according to White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, considers it premature to open a new debate on this issue. “For now, we need to mourn the victims and comfort the survivors,” she said. In addition, there should be a full investigation of what happened in Las Vegas. However, representatives of Republicans and Democrats in the coming days may discuss the law on firearms and measures to reduce violence with their use, said Sarah Sanders.

“Will not go against the voters”: will the Democrats be able to force Trump to limit the sale of weapons in the United States
The latest cases of mass shootings in the United States are unlikely to lead to serious restrictions on gun control, experts say. Earlier, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi urged Donald Trump to recall the Senate from parliamentary recess to pass the relevant bill. However, the Republican leader in the upper house of Congress, Mitch McConnell, opposed this initiative. According to analysts, the American leader will not go against his electorate and the gun lobby before the 2020 presidential election.
“Increases the degree of hatred in the country”: Democrats linked the increase in the number of massacres in the United States to Trump’s policies
There were three mass shootings in the US during the first weekend of August. In the cities of Chicago, Dayton and El Paso, more than 30 people died, more than 60 were injured. Speaking about the possible causes of the tragedies, representatives of the Democratic Party said that none other than Donald Trump was to blame for the increase in the number of armed attacks. In their opinion, the president supports the nationalists and “increases the degree of hatred in the country with his rhetoric.” Read more about the accusations against Trump and the history of massacres in the United States in the article by RT correspondent Daniel Hawkins.
From defense to attack: why Trump supports the US arms lobby
The head of the White House, Donald Trump, came to the defense of the US National Rifle Association (NRA), after the New York Attorney’s Office launched an investigation against it. This organization is the main lobbyist for the right of citizens to bear arms, which is guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the US Constitution. As political scientists note, this sensitive issue has split not only Democrats and Republicans, but American society itself. According to experts, it will become the main one in the upcoming election campaign. From the point of view of analysts, the US President has not in vain turned to this topic right now: Trump is trying to mobilize his electorate before the 2020 elections.
