Meet Melissa Ruiz, Our Center Director

Meet Melissa Ruiz! She is the Center Director at Poinsettia KinderCare in Carlsbad, California. Melissa attended Ventura College, where she earned an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree from California State University Channel Islands. She has been with KinderCare since 2021, and before that she was a center director at another childcare center. Outside of work, Melissa enjoys anything to do with plants and astronomy, going to the beach, traveling, and spending time with her family. “Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

Poinsettia KinderCare Programs

Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.

Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

Spanish

Spanish Adventures provides young learners with a foundation for later success with
the Spanish language. Music, games, children’s Spanish literature, and other tools give
children multiple opportunities to hear, practice, and see Spanish language to develop
vocabulary and conversation skills. Curriculum includes lessons on greetings, numbers,
colors, animals, family, body parts, and pets, as well as how to engage conversationally
during common scenarios at home, a restaurant, or at the zoo.

STEM Innovators (3-8 Years)

You’ve probably heard a lot about how important STEM education is for your child, but
what does that really mean? Our STEM Innovators program takes kids’ natural ability to
make sense of the world and applies it to robotics, chemistry, coding, geology, and
more. While your child experiments, they’ll discover how to use technology to do
amazing things!

How does naptime work at Poinsettia KinderCare?

Do you support alternative diets?

We strive to be as inclusive as possible. To that point, we provide a vegetarian option at mealtime, take care to not serve common allergens and can adapt menus based on your child’s food sensitivities. If your child has additional needs, we’ll work with you to figure out a plan.

Are meals included in tuition? Can I choose to send my child with lunch?

We provide nutritious meals and snacks developed by a registered dietician to meet the needs of rapidly growing bodies and minds. If your child has special dietary requirements and you would prefer to bring in their lunch, please make arrangements with the center director.

Does my child need to be potty-trained?

Every child begins toilet learning at a different age. Until your child shows an interest in toilet learning, we’ll provide diaper changes on an as-needed basis. When your child shows an interest, we’ll discuss how to work together to encourage toilet learning.

• CPR and First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain
• Active Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential (or willing to obtain)
• Completed 12 core ECE Units Infant/toddler OR BA Degree in Child Development
• Must be physically able to use a computer with basic proficiency, lift a minimum of 40 pounds, and work indoors or outdoors
• Ability to assume postures in low levels to allow physical and visual contact with children, see and hear well enough to keep children safe, and engage in physical activity with children
• Read, write, understand, and speak English to communicate with children and their parents in English
• All center staff applicants must meet state specific guidelines for the role

I know how much the teachers and management at Poinsettia care about children. You can tell by the way they interact with them, the curriculum they teach, and the way they carry themselves everyday. I think that the new director, Max seems to be doing very well so far, which is a relief given the amount of transition that has gone on their. Overall, I think this school has been GREAT for my children.

Our experience at poinsettia kindercare has been amazing. The staff is warm and welcoming. The teachers that I know have been there for years and most important my child is happy and learning. My child at two years old smiles when I tell him we are going to school.

Their disciplinary actions are all over the place, and its clear they don’t have proper staff in place to handle the amount of students that they have.

With a normal content and a longer daylight hours, dark specks may form on the leaves of the poinsettia.

Temperature

Poinsettia does not like too hot weather and prefers constant moderate heat. It is good if during the day the temperature in the room with it does not exceed 20-25 degrees, and at night it drops to 16-18 degrees. In the summer, you can take the bush out into the air. In winter, when the bush blooms, the room should not be below 14 degrees. It is especially important not to expose the flower to cold. But they know this culture, first of all, as a “New Year”, “Christmas” or “Bethlehem” star and Christmas spurge. Bright bracts turn a nondescript deciduous plant into a very noticeable, dazzling one.

The most beautiful Euphorbia is a plant from the Euphorbiaceae family. Previously, instead of the genus Euphorbium, this culture was separated into an independent genus Poinsettia, but the classification has been revised for a very long time. In nature, euphorbia poinsettias are found not only in Mexico, but they are still associated precisely with the local flora. In the mild subtropical climate of Central America, which gave us many bright garden stars, they amaze the imagination with their riot of colors.

Euphorbia poinsettias are plants whose belonging to succulents and euphorbia is not so easy to guess. This culture seems to be a simple herbaceous perennial with large leaves, but very dazzling in both texture and color. Poinsettias are short-day plants whose time to show off comes when most indoor crops go into a long dormant period and suffer from a lack of light.

Euphorbia most beautiful – far from modest in size, but artificially restrained indoor culture. Belonging to evergreen shrubs that can grow up to 150 cm in height is not easy to guess in room culture. Large poinsettia leaves are their main pride. Large, oval-diamond-shaped, finger-incised, slightly reminiscent of maple, with a coarsely serrated edge and a pointed tip, they are inimitable and easily recognizable. The unique large leaves of the beautiful milkweed make their texture. Matte velvety leaves seem luxurious, and dark green, with a cold emerald sheen, the color only emphasizes the beauty of the amazing velveteen texture. In many spurges, all leaves show off an unusual reddish or chocolate tint.

But the bracts of poinsettia still attract more attention: at the top of the shoot, a dense rosette of smaller bracts is formed, often slightly different in shape and radically different in color from the main foliage. Bright, repainted in dazzling colors – red, cream, pink, bright green, salmon, lemon, cream leaves create the illusion of a flower due to the symmetrical arrangement.

They sit tight for a stunning star shape. The flowers themselves and the inflorescences of poinsettias are almost invisible – inconspicuous, small, they are invisible against the background of luxurious apical leaves with a bright color. Plants tend to shed their leaves, after flowering require a drier maintenance period of 6 weeks. Care must be taken when working with the most beautiful milkweed. This is still euphorbia, the juice of which is no less poisonous than that of its counterparts. Poinsettias are often thought of as a living decoration designed to decorate interiors in the run-up to the winter holidays. But this is a light-loving plant, which without good lighting will not retain its luxurious leaves for a long time. Placing bushes in the back of rooms, away from windows, on tables, chests of drawers or coasters, of course, is very impressive, but poinsettias will not be comfortable in such places.

In order to admire the leaves not for several weeks, but for several months, and even save the plant for next year and make it bloom again, you should take care of good lighting. Poinsettias do not like direct sun, preferring diffused lighting. But in winter, even the southern window sills will not be dangerous for them.

During the winter months, it is better for the plant to take care of additional illumination of the poinsettia, especially if the weather is cloudy for a long time. The intensity of illumination does not coincide with its stability: at different stages of development, the most beautiful euphorbia requires different lengths of daylight hours.

Flowering in poinsettias kept year after year is stimulated mainly by lighting – its reduction at first to 10-11, and then to only 8 hours a day. Without a short daylight hours, poinsettia does not form flowers, and the apical leaves do not turn into typical dazzling colors.

Place the plants approximately two months before the desired start of flowering in a brightly lit area where they will enjoy the sun for 8-10 hours a day, or provide additional lighting to create similar conditions, but cover the remaining 14-16 hours with a cap or opaque box, protecting even from light artificial lighting inside living rooms.

So, if they want to make poinsettias bloom by the beginning of the winter holidays, they begin to cover them for 14 hours already in October. The increase in the length of daylight hours should be smooth, gradually the plant is shaded for an ever shorter period, starting to change the mode of maintenance a few weeks before the holidays.

During the dormant period of poinsettia, after flowering, for 6 weeks, plants, especially those that have shed all their leaves, can be placed where convenient. The quality of lighting will only matter once active growth begins.

Temperature and ventilation

The sensitivity of the most beautiful milkweed to both cold and heat significantly complicates its cultivation. Finding a comfortable place for a plant is not easy. Lowering less than 15 degrees poinsettia does not like, but it is not advisable to allow values ​​above 25 degrees.

If in the rest of the year the plant can adapt to almost any conditions, then during the flowering period, if you want to admire the bright leaves longer, you need to maintain the air temperature from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius.

After flowering and pruning, it is advisable to move the poinsettia to coolness, if flowering has not been delayed and, in principle, this can be done. The optimal temperature in the room is below 20 degrees Celsius, about 15-18 degrees.

Similar temperatures are best maintained in the few months that the plant is kept under artificially controlled short daylight hours in late autumn and early winter. This allows you to achieve a fairly abundant flowering of poinsettia and brighter shades of apical bract rosettes.

All temperature changes should be gentle and gradual. When buying poinsettias, especially new varieties of compact sizes, it is better to clarify the wintering parameters: sometimes flowering in flower centers is stimulated by keeping the temperature at a temperature of 10 to 15 degrees. And next year, it is these values ​​that will be optimal for the plant at home.

If the poinsettia is bought for only one season, it is suitable for moderate temperatures – from 18 to 20 degrees Celsius, which will allow you to stretch the flowering for a longer period.

Minimum temperature limits to consider when buying new plants; despite the “winter” status, poinsettias do not tolerate cold and you should not buy them where the plants are in temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius, because the plant most likely will not survive.

Poinsettias love fresh air, but they cannot stand drafts and temperature changes. Airing or taking out in the summer to the garden or to the balconies has a positive effect on the growth of the plant. Humidity indicators are critical during budding and flowering. At this time, humidifiers must be installed for the poinsettia (at least pallets with wet pebbles or moss) or regular, gentle spraying is introduced into the care program (drops of moisture should not accumulate on the leaves).

The most beautiful Euphorbia (Euphorbia pulcherrima), or poinsettia (Poinsettia) belongs to the genus Euphorbia of the Euphorbiaceae family. In its natural environment, the culture grows in the tropics of Latin America. The shrubs got their name in honor of D. R. Poinsett, an American politician who is remembered in history for being the first US agent in South America. Poinsett was interested in botany and was the first to bring the beautiful Euphorbia from Mexico to the States in 1825.

By nature, the plant is an evergreen shrub that can grow up to four meters in height in its native area. Cultivated species grow up to a maximum of 30-50 centimeters. The leaves of the species are dark, 10-15 centimeters long, oval in shape, with a serrated edging, grow on small petioles. In the flowering season, inflorescences bloom on the tops of the shoots with small light yellow buds surrounded by bright red bracts.
