Texas is the southernmost state in the US and one of the most colorful in the entire country. For almost all travelers, it is known for the hot temper of the Wild West, cowboys, ranches and westerns. I liked this place for the hospitality of the locals, daily music festivals, amazing barbecue and a beautiful sunset. The sun is overhead here around the clock, but at the same time there are enough reservoirs that help to escape from the heat. In addition, Texas is famous for its border with Mexico, and indeed the special history of their relationship, so the mix of peoples from Mexico and America only adds to the special atmosphere of this state. While in Texas, I also noticed how the locals love their state and how proud they are of their origins. It’s not for nothing that one of the most popular expressions there is “Don’t mess with Texas”, which translates as “don’t mess with Texas.” In fact, this is, of course, a joke.

Getting there

Getting to Texas is easy, especially if the person is already in the United States. From Moscow and St. Petersburg, of course, you can only fly. There are a lot of airports here, some of the busiest are in Dallas, Austin and Houston. You can also sail to the State from Mexico, or by train or car from many other regions of America.

Airplane

Texas airports are some of the busiest in the country. Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso are the most popular destinations. From Moscow to any airport in Texas can be reached only with a transfer or two. They usually take place in New York or Boston. The following airlines fly there: United, Delta, Finnair (with the first change in Helsinki), Aeroflot (with a change in New York). The cost of such tickets starts from 35 thousand rubles. and goes up to 100 for a one-way ticket. However, I advise you to take a ticket to New York, and then from New York to the desired city in Texas. This makes it much cheaper. Many airlines fly to New York, including: Aeroflot, Alitalia, Lufthansa Swiss Airlines and many others. All flights are daily. From St. Petersburg, the situation is the same, only often the plane flies to Moscow at the beginning, and from there to the desired point. You can find flight options here.

As for the airports themselves, these are completely comfortable areas where any traveler can find what he needs. There are also information desks where they will help and explain how to get to the city, and taxi ranks, restaurants, lounge areas, prayer rooms, luggage storage and much more. Buses are usually located near the exits of the terminals, taxis in a special parking area. I can’t say specifically about all the airports in the State, since there are quite a lot of them, but the approximate cost of a shuttle ride to the center is 10-11 USD. A taxi ride is about 25 USD.

Train

You can get to Texas by train. The most famous route of the American railway company Amtrak called Texas Eagle runs through the entire state, connecting Chicago with Los Angeles. Within the state, it makes stops in San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Sanderson and other cities. Tickets cost about 150 USD. Greyhound is the most popular American bus transportation company throughout the USA. Texas is no exception. From my own experience, I can notice that the trips are comfortable, sometimes, of course, unusual fellow travelers happen, but at the same time everything goes peacefully anyway. Travel time depends on the route, sometimes it is 2 hours, sometimes 20. There are many buses going to Texas, especially to cities such as Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio. Also popular are routes to the sea coast in the south of the region.

By car

By car, Texas is accessible from all parts of the US and Mexico. Residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg will find it convenient to rent a car right at the airport of arrival and use the internal highways I-20, I-35 and US 54 to easily get to the desired city. When is the season. When to go

In my opinion, the best time to visit Texas is spring. With temperatures reaching 35-40°C in most parts of the region during the summer, it won’t be very comfortable to be there, especially in dry areas like Dallas. But nevertheless, the tourist life will always be eventful, as a lot of various events, festivals, concerts, and festivities take place in Texas all year round. Museums and natural sites are not closed for the winter.

Texas in summer

Summer in Texas is one of the most seasonal times, especially considering the beaches and numerous festivals and celebrations. People come here to relax on the ocean coast. The temperature in June is about 27°C, in July and August it is 30-40°C. There are many tourists and even more locals who are trying to escape from the sweltering heat.

Texas in the fall

There are plenty of things to do in Texas in the fall, as temperatures around 20°C make walking more comfortable than in summer. During such a period, you can safely go to any of the cities and plunge into the historical atmosphere of the region. There are enough tourists during this period, but more of them are no longer concentrated on the coasts, but in large cities like Austin and Dallas.

Spring is my favorite season to travel to Texas. It seems to me that this is the most suitable period, since in April-May you can already relax on numerous beaches, as well as calmly move between cities without languishing from the heat. Tourists begin to come here by mid-spring, but there are fewer of them than in summer.

Winter is not the season for Texas, as during this period there can be strong winds, including tornadoes, and even snow can rarely fall. So I advise you to postpone the trip until spring. In addition, it will not be possible to appreciate the beauty of the region.

What are the prices for holidays

• Housing. Since the state is large, and some countries are smaller than Texas, housing depends on the location. The lowest prices within the state are in the center of the country. Main attractions. What to see

Texas attractions can be mainly divided into natural and cultural. They are very proud of their history here, so a large number of ancient buildings, military history museums, old fortresses are not at all surprising. Also, I would say the main pearl of Texas is the Gulf of Mexico, which in itself is a huge attraction.

I advise you to visit both categories of objects, because they are so inspiring!

Top 5

1. Alamo Fortress in San Antonio. This fortress is not just the main attraction of the city, but also a real symbol of the struggle for the independence of the inhabitants of the current territory of Texas from Mexico.
2. 6th Floor Museum in Dallas. Dedicated to the investigation into the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy. Let me remind you that Kennedy was assassinated just in Dallas by Lee Harvey Oswald.
3. NASA Space Center in Houston. It will be of interest to all admirers of space. There are many models of airplanes, rockets. Shows are often held.
4. Big Bend National Park is located near the Mexican border. Beautiful views of the desert mountains, a variety of wild animals, vibrant landscapes are just a few of what this park is known for. In it you can move around both on footpaths and book a tour by boat or helicopter.
5. Padre Island National Seashore is a nature reserve, one of the most visited places, as well as a reserve of sea turtles and a haven for migrating birds, located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Beaches. Which is better

1. Padre Island. As I wrote above, Padre Island is a nature reserve. But here you can also relax on the cleanest beaches, observe the flora and fauna and go surfing.
2. Galveston Island. One of the most crowded and touristic places. But, nevertheless, there is a lot of fun here and there is always something to do. You can ride not only on water, but also on ordinary rides, go to many bars or just lie on the beach. The beaches are mostly paid, about 8 USD.
3. Port Aransas. A less popular place than Galveston Island, but the entire infrastructure is also developed here. Some of the beaches belong to hotels – the entrance there is paid, there are also municipal ones, where the entrance is free.

Churches and temples. What to visit

Texas is one of the most religious areas of the country, the main religion of the population here is Catholicism. In addition, sometimes the scale of the institution is amazing.

• Lakewood Church in Houston. The largest church in the country. Its capacity is 43 thousand visitors, and it is located in the stadium building, which impressed me very much!
• Fellowship Church in Grapevine. Also one of the largest churches. Located near Dallas. The sermon here is more like a show.
• St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. The Baptist Church, which is also classified as a “painted church of Texas”, and is of particular historical importance associated with immigrants from Germany and Poland.

Museums. What to visit

• Bullock Texas State History Museum. One of the best museums in the State, dedicated to its history. This place is suitable for anyone who is interested in Texas history and longs to see reconstructions, installations and various models. The cost of visits is 13 USD for adults, 11 USD for students and 9for kids.
• Meadows Museum of Art. One of the best art museums in the country, dedicated not only to American art, but also to the Spanish-speaking population. Here you can find paintings by Velasquez and Goya. Admission is $12 for adults and $4 for students.
• Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. This museum is very large and is dedicated not just to the history of Texas, but to the history of the entire American nation. Exhibitions here start from dinosaurs and end with modern space exhibits. Admission 10 USD. The museum is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Parks

• Guadalupe Mountains national park. One of the most beautiful parks in Texas and very large in size. It reflects exactly the idea that people get when they hear the word “Texas”. Wildlife and desert are all here.

• Davis Mountains State Park. The park is located in Fort Davis. It is very calm here, and the sky merges with the earth. Here you can go hiking, camping and just spend time in nature.
• Palo Duro Canyon State Park. It is located near the city of Canyon and is also the second largest canyon after the Grand Canyon. There are horse, bicycle and walking paths.
• Zilker Metropolitan Park. Park in the heart of Austin. A large area where you can go boating, play frisbee, ride a bike and just walk around the capital of Texas. Various concerts and festivals often take place in this park.

Nearby islands

1. Ward Island. The island is interesting because during the second war there was a training center for the US air and naval forces. In 1947, the center closed and the place became available to tourists.
2. Matagorda Island. Here you can safely relax on the beaches without crowds of tourists and meet new types of non-dangerous animals that you have not seen before.

Neighboring regions

The most interesting neighboring regions of Texas are definitely California and Mexico. That one territory, that the second deserves a visit and will leave only pleasant impressions. California with its ocean coast, Hollywood movies and beautiful nature will not leave anyone indifferent except New York lovers 🙂 Mexico is very similar to Texas, they have a huge history connected with it and are always glad to all guests. You can get to both places by any transport. Car, plane, train, bus. Some even make forays on foot across the border.

Food. What to try

Texas cuisine has absorbed a huge number of traditions from around the world. Here the tastes of Native Americans, Mexicans and Europeans are intertwined. In addition, the state is developing so much in this direction that it will be very easy to find vegan and gluten-free places. However, I believe that food in Texas has several main directions. Here’s what you need to try:

1. First of all, these are meat dishes. Barbecue and Tex-Mex are the hallmarks of the region. You can find it both in an inexpensive eatery and in a well-known expensive restaurant. In any case, the meat will be cooked correctly and tasty.
2. Second, Mexican food. Tacos (wheat stuffed buns), Inchaladas (wrapped wheat rolls), Chili con carne (spicy soup), Quesadillas (stuffed pie) and more are an integral part of Texan life. I think the Mexican food in Texas is even better than in Mexico itself. It is served in almost every restaurant in the state, there are specialized Mexican places, and there are those with a combined kitchen.
3. Thirdly, some of the best drinks – Margarita, live beer, delicious tea. Texas is famous for this! The cost of drinks depends on the place, but, as a rule, a good margarita costs about 8-10 USD.

Holidays

Speaking of holidays in Texas, I want to say that there are a lot of them. Each city has its own birthday, memorable dates, important events. Therefore, it is very difficult to cover all the interesting events. However, I think that it is about the following five holidays that need to be told:

1. The US Independence Day is July 4th. The thing is that regardless of the city, this holiday is celebrated everywhere in the country. Even in small towns with a population of only a few thousand. Texans love this holiday and put a lot of meaning and money into it. One of the most beautiful fireworks can be seen on the bridge in Austin. Or in San Antonio – fireworks paint the river in the colors of the flag. In general, every American in Texas will celebrate this event in a big way.
2. Texas Independence Day from Mexico. It is celebrated on March 1 and is popular throughout the region. As a rule, on this day there are many events dedicated to independence, parades, fireworks.
3. June 19th is Emancipation and Freedom Day in the state. The prehistory of the holiday was the liberation of the African-Americans of Texas from slavery in 1862. On the one hand, the holiday is dedicated to equality, and now the inhabitants of the southern state celebrate their independence and enjoy their rights on an equal basis with men. On the other hand, no one forgets the racist history of America, so that the African-American population, also as full citizens, reminds the world that such a problem has been overcome.
4. Republic of Texas Biker Rally. One of my favorite events. Motorcycle parade + a huge number of bikers from all over Texas.
5. El Dia de los muertos – translated from Spanish means the day of the dead. It is celebrated in principle in all Spanish-speaking states of the country, and especially on a large scale in Texas. for it is impossible to separate Mexican history from Texan history. On this day, a tribute is paid to the memory of dead ancestors. An unforgettable sight – masquerades, dances in costumes, music, interesting customs – this is only a small part of this holiday.

Security. Things to watch out for

When it comes to safety regarding thieves or harassment – here it’s all like in any civilized city. That is, the percentage of thefts always exists, as well as men can pester women quite often. Therefore, I consider trips for girls comfortable and safe.

But regarding the threat to life, this is more likely due to natural features – there can be poisonous snakes in the steppes, small scorpions can come across inside the houses. I’ve seen a few myself – an unpleasant sight. Although they are not life-threatening, if bitten, you need to see a doctor. Coyotes can also be found on the roads. In addition, if you are traveling in the summer, you need to remember that it is very hot in Texas and be sure to drink plenty of water and protect your head from the sun.

Things to do

Texas is so big and diverse for one region. There is a huge number of activities, and they differ from city to city. In the south of the state, there are a lot of water activities, ranging from the ocean to many rivers. Also in some parts of the region you can ride a roller coaster, go to a rodeo, visit a ranch, and you just need to ride horses!

Here I list some of the most important and necessary things to do in Texas:

• Six Flags Amusement Park. There are numerous parks throughout the country. Here you can ride the rides and have fun.
• Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch in San Antonio. Zebras, giraffes – everything is like in Africa.
• The two-step dance is the national dance of Texas. Usually you can learn it not only at special shows, but also in any purely Texas bar. Just come in and see for yourself!
• Swimming in circles on the river. You can take beer, food with you and spend a calm day in the sun and water.

Extreme Sports

For me, Texas has become one of the epitome of extreme sports in just one state. You can find a lot of interesting activities here.

For example:

• Climbing. In some national parks of the state, you can climb mountains with an instructor and special equipment, as well as climb. Very common in national parks that are close to cities such as Austin, Houston, El Paso, Danton, Dallas, and Fort Worth.
• Zip-line descent. The zip line is very popular. In Texas, it is located not only in special centers, but also in children’s camps, and is entertainment not only for adults, but also for children. Zip-lines can be found in special entertainment centers in any major city.
• Wind tunnel flight. Major cities like Austin and Dallas have wind tunnel training centers. It will be more difficult for beginners, but they will teach you everything.
• Paragliding. Most often they fly over vast areas, for example, in national parks or over the Gulf of Mexico. On vacation, you just need to find a sign with the inscription paragliding. The flight will be carried out with an instructor, for which you must first prepare.
• River kayaking or lake kayaking is very popular in Texas. Full-flowing mountain rivers, small small rivers – everything has everything for this activity. There are many such places in San Marcos, Austin and Somerville.
• Skate parks. Skateboarding is a hugely popular pastime among Texan youth. Ramps and drained pools – it’s all there. In addition, every year here in Austin, the X Games takes place – a championship dedicated to summer extreme sports. Not only skaters, but also bikers participate in it.
• Sea extreme sports. Since part of Texas is located on the Gulf of Mexico, maritime hobbies are very common here. Surfing, windsurfing, water skiing, tubing – everything is here.

Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift

Of course, first of all, Texas is known for its cowboy souvenirs. You can buy cowboy boots or a hat. Good leather boots cost about 200 USD. But there are also souvenir ones for 30-50 USD. Leather goods are also popular, such as a belt or saddle for a horse. By the way, you can buy a horseshoe for good luck, which will cost a maximum of 10 USD.

Bat souvenirs are popular in Austin because they live there. Or music records. Music records, by the way, are very cheap here, and even records by famous artists can cost 3-4 USD.

Mexican ethnic features are also ubiquitous. As a gift, you can buy a bracelet, a figurine or a painting in the Spanish-Mexican style. Such souvenirs are inexpensive, within 10-15 USD. Bracelets are generally sold for 1-2 USD.

Also, I noticed that there are a lot of Texas shaped bottle openers/lighters/key chains/magnets sold in stores, which will not let you forget about the patriotism of this place.

Shopping & Stores

Texas has all types of shops. Huge shopping centers, grocery supermarkets, small shops, children’s and teen stores, outlets – this is not all that is in Texas. Many large stores have not only goods, but also entertainment – food courts, roller and ice rinks, children’s rooms, cinemas and much more.

The most important trading cities in the region are: Austin (state capital), Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth.

In the south of the state, I would like to highlight Galveston and Corpus Christi – seaside resorts, where there is all the necessary infrastructure and shops for a great vacation.

Bars

Despite the fact that club life in America is mostly associated with New York or California, there are a lot of decent institutions in Texas. Basically, I think they can be divided into 3 types: standard beer bars, music bars, Texas-style bars.

• Thus, the first type implies those establishments that work from morning to night, where mostly local residents go. These are the bars where people go to just unwind after a day at work, watch sports and just meet up with friends. There are places like this in almost every city in the region.
• The second type is fun party bars, where both locals and tourists go. Most often they are open a little longer than other bars, and open during the day. There are concerts with live music or DJs play.
• The third type is the so-called saloons. Such bars are aimed at tourists, dances are held here, performances are played, and the design is made in the style of the Wild West.

Of course, speaking of bars in Texas, the best bar and club street is in Austin – 6th street. It is known all over the world, and here everyone will find an institution to their taste.

Clubs and Nightlife

Speaking of clubs in Texas, I must say that the nightlife here is in full swing. Clubs, parties, noisy streets are all an integral part of Texas society. In all major cities there are not just a few large and popular clubs, but also entire party streets. There are places where pop music plays and people just relax and dance, and there are places where famous DJs play, and then these are huge venues with a lot of people. Also popular are karaoke clubs where you can both sing and dance.

In Texas clubs are usually open from 6-7pm until 3am. Most often, all clubs accept visitors from 21 years old, since in the United States the age of majority comes at this age. Some are allowed inside until 21, but it is forbidden to drink alcoholic beverages and a special stamp is placed on the hands that glow in the dark so that the bartenders can see. Also, most often at the entrance there is face control and dress control. In large cities there is an entrance fee, from 5 to 10 USD. In small towns, entry is usually free.

As I said earlier, 6th street in Austin is the most popular street in the state with a variety of clubs. I would also recommend clubs in Galveston, as this is one of the most popular seaside destinations where clubs are part of life, and there are also a lot of young people who love clubs and nightlife.

Texas is a very good place for families with children. Almost in all cities there are playgrounds, parks, zoos, there is an oceanarium. In addition, children will be interested in a beach holiday, where animators also work.
