How to become a pharmacist in Canada – Immigrant today
A special license is required to work as a pharmacist in Canada. Find out how to do it and how much it costs.
If you have an education and experience as a pharmacist and want to continue your profession in Canada, you must obtain a license.
The licensing process for pharmacists in Canada is complex, lengthy and expensive . To get started, you must have at least a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. The process for obtaining a license is almost the same in all regions of Canada, however, each province and territory may impose additional rules. In general, to be licensed as a pharmacist in Canada, you must:
- Register with the Pharmacists’ Gateway Canada of the National Association of Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) of Canada.
- Apply to the Pharmaceutical Examination Board of Canada (PEBC) for the evaluation (confirmation) of documents on education and for the pre-exam.
- Pass an English or French proficiency test, and a drug law test.
- Complete advanced training and retraining courses (in some cases).
- Apply to your local Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authority and complete a structured practical training program.
- Pass a qualifying exam, which consists of a theoretical and practical part.
- Fill out an application for registration of a pharmacist and obtain a license.
Let’s look at each step in detail and move on to the issue of the length and cost of the licensing process.
1. Registration with Pharmacists’ Gateway Canada
Registering with Pharmacists’ Gateway Canada will allow you to start applying for a license. You will create an account in the system and receive a candidate number. You will need to provide information such as your name, address and date of birth. With this account you will be able to track your progress throughout the licensing process.
It is recommended that you use the self-assessment tool before registering. It will help you understand the Canadian licensing process and the realities of the working environment. It will also help you determine in which areas you may need more education or experience, as well as help determine your readiness for any steps in the Canadian Pharmacy Licensing process.
If you are confident in your knowledge and want to start the licensing process, click here. But first, we recommend that you read this article to the end.
2. Applying to the Pharmaceutical Examination Council of Canada
The Pharmaceutical Examinations Board of Canada (PEBC) will assess your qualifications and competence through several tests: an assessment of educational documents, a preliminary examination, and a qualifying examination. For candidates applying to the province of Quebec, the licensing process is different.
Evaluation (confirmation) of education documents
Your identification documents, pharmacy degree, transcripts and licensing applications will be assessed by the Pharmaceutical Examination Board of Canada. Please note: The minimum requirement is a four-year bachelor’s degree in pharmacy. If your educational credentials and licensing applications are found to be acceptable, you will be eligible to take the pre-test.

Who benefits from working in Canada.
Who has the best salaries and demand
Today, Canada is one of the most attractive destinations for emigration in the world. However, many people are wondering what professions are the most profitable and most in demand in this country. Especially often this question arises among those who are going to go to study in Canada. After all, they have a much wider choice of opportunities, compared with specialists who have already received education in the educational institutions of their countries.
When it comes to what profession or specialty is most beneficial for a successful life in Canada, many people begin to calculate the average wages in this profession. However, this is not always justified. After all, there are quite prestigious and profitable occupations, which are very limited by the number of jobs. For example, a federal judge in Canada is a very prestigious and very well paid position. However, there are very few such jobs.
For this reason, one should pay attention not only to the level of profitability of specialists in a particular field, but also to the demand for such specialists and, more importantly, to the prospects for such specialists in the future. After all, the world is developing at a tremendous pace. There are new professions and whole new areas of human activity. And many “old” professions are changing significantly. First of all, this is due to the use of new technologies in all activities of modern man.
According to the authoritative Canadian publication Canadian Business, in 2017, the following professions could boast of the highest average salaries (Median salary):
-
Economic development directors – 114400 C $ . It is these people who help cities and entire regions find new opportunities to attract investment, create jobs and develop social infrastructure.
-
Utilities managers – 112320 C $ . These managers ensure the smooth functioning of electrical networks and other infrastructure of the modern urban economy.
-
Public administration directors These people manage the efficiency of huge corporations, thanks to which the country’s economy flourishes. But the path to such a position is long enough.
-
Engineers – oilmen (Petroleum Engineers) – 104000 C$ . Engineers in the extractive industries always make good money. But the average salaries of engineers associated with hydrocarbon production are especially good.
-
Financial & Real estate managers – 103376 C$. Today, people involved in real estate, the average salary is high. This is facilitated by the boom in demand for real estate observed in recent years.
-
Pharmacists – 102394 C $ . Employees in the pharmaceutical industry earn quite well. However, there is an oversaturation of the market with such specialists. Therefore, the outlook is uncertain.
-
Mining & forestry managers – 100006 C $ . Canada is a country with a powerful extractive industry and forestry. Therefore, such specialists will always be in demand.

It is worth noting that the average salary is a very conditional concept. Specialists in other professions can also earn good amounts. If they are high-class specialists and have significant experience. For example, a family doctor in Canada may well expect an annual income of 200-220 thousand C$. It looks like the situation in the market of specialists – lawyers. Good lawyers can have a very impressive amount of annual income. Good prospects for people in the IT industry, and for educational specialists, and for many others.
Of course, it is always worth considering exactly where this or that specialist works. In the Northern Territories, the average salaries of all specialists are somewhat higher. However, the cost of living there is much higher compared to Ontario, Southern Quebec or Vancouver. In addition, due to the different purchasing power of people from different cities and regions, the earning prospects of self-employed persons, such as lawyers or all kinds of real estate and insurance agents, also depend on where they work. In Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal, as well as in such successful regions as Kelowna or Victoria Island, the chances of making money are higher.
