Hockey overtime – Sports betting
As in many team sports, in hockey it is not always possible to determine the winner in the specified time in the match. It happens that after three periods on the scoreboard a draw. In this case, extra time or overtime is assigned. Find out how long it lasts and how bookmakers take into account overtime when betting on hockey matches.
General Rules
Knowing the rules of the game is essential to successful betting so you can accurately predict the outcome. Here are the highlights:
- A hockey game consists of 3 periods of 20 minutes each.
- Time stops during game breaks.
- In case of a tie, overtime is played, which lasts 5 minutes or until the first goal. At some major events, extra time can be up to 20 minutes.
- In domestic championships, overtime is played by 4 people per team, in international championships by 5 players. The exception is the KHL, where 3 team members remain in extra time.
- If there is a draw at the end of overtime, the teams will play a penalty shoot-out. But if it’s the playoffs, then in most professional leagues there are no penalties, and overtimes last until there is a winner (20 minutes each).
Therefore, before placing a bet, read the separate rules for the match you plan to predict.
Hockey – bets on the winner
As we have already said, the main playing time in a hockey match can end in a win or a draw. In the event of a tie, the game continues until a winner is determined. Therefore, for hockey, pre-match bets on the result are available in two options:
- 3-way bet 1X2 – You are betting on the result in regular time, excluding extra time and penalties.
- bet 1 2 – you bet on who will be the final winner of the match. In this case, it does not matter if the game ends after 3 periods, overtime or penalties.
So be careful and double-check whether your bet takes into account overtime or not.
Hockey betting: specials and overtime
In practice, most special rates only take into account the main time or period. For example, totals, both teams to score, handicaps, goal difference – all this is considered without overtime. But there are a few exceptions.
Goalscorer
Here the bookmakers will offer two types of bets: whether the player will score a goal only in regular time or including overtime. Penalty goals do not count here. Naturally, the player must appear at the specified match for the bet to stand.
Total Goals Over/Under (including overtime)
This bet is on the total number of goals scored by both teams during the game, including extra time. Penalties count as one goal for the team that won the shootout. For example, Total over 5. 5 goals. The result of the match after overtime is 2:2, the home team won the penalty, which gives a result of 3:2 – the bet is lost.
Correct Score
Some Correct Score bets include overtime, but you should check this on the bookmaker’s website.
