Decide if a part-time sitter is right for your family.

Whether they have to be fluent in Spanish or cook like an Iron Chef, every family has a list of “must-haves” for their new babysitter or nanny. What many families don’t realize, however, is that they’re often posting for the wrong type of child care provider all together!

You may already know there’s a difference between a babysitter and a nanny, but what if you need something in the middle? You may need to hire a part-time nanny.

If your family is searching for an experienced caregiver to help raise your children, but you only need someone a few days a week or a few hours each day, a part-time nanny may be exactly what you need. Learn how changing your job posting from “weekday sitter” to “part-time nanny” may help you find the qualified candidates you want.

What is a part-time nanny?

A part-time nanny “should have the same qualifications that full-time nannies possess,” says Becky Kavanagh, former co-president of the International Nanny Association. They watch the children before and/or after school or a few days a week. Maybe the family only needs help while a parent works part time or on days the kids are home from school. As long as the nanny works under 35 hours a week, they are considered part time.

Why do you need a part-time nanny?

Many families find part-time nannies convenient because they can help out in the window of time when they are at work but their children are out of school. This is also the time of day when stay-at-home moms tend to need a little extra help. A mom with several kids may hire a part-time nanny so that she can shuffle older kids to their after-school activities while the nanny can stay around the house playing games with the younger children.

Part-time nannies can be an extra set of hands that can help mom through the tough after-school hours or even through dinner, the bath and getting ready for bed when their partner isn’t home yet. The part-time nanny title typically entails a more qualified caregiver than an after-school sitter.

The part-time nanny is a caregiver that won’t just be there while the child does homework, but one who will actually help to teach effective and lifelong skills.

While an after-school sitter could be great for driving kids to and from activities, a part-time nanny may teach the children Spanish, set up play dates and exciting excursions and do the family’s laundry. She is the caregiver that can go above and beyond and truly shape your child’s upbringing.

What qualities should you look for in a part-time nanny?

You should approach the hiring process the same way you would for a full-time nanny. This caregiver will be spending a lot of quality time with your children, so it is important that he or she has substantial child care experience and skills like CPR and first-aid training.

It’s also critical that families find someone that they feel comfortable “co-parenting” with. “You want to find someone who you feel could be a third parent in your relationship,” says Bugbee. “Someone who will not only care for your children as her own, but also will help teach the unique goals that you set for your children.”

What do you pay a part-time nanny?

A part-time nanny’s compensation depends on the area of the country you live in, the typical rate in that area, and the number of children you have. Check out our nanny calculator to figure out the going rate in your area. Keep in mind that part-time nannies may expect more than regular babysitters, but typically come with greater experience and involvement in your child’s life.

Do you need to pay taxes for a part-time nanny?

Many families may also wonder if they need to pay nanny taxes for someone who isn’t full-time. No matter how many hours a week your nanny works, as soon as she earns $2,100 or more throughout the calendar year, you’re required to withhold employment taxes.

A part-time nanny will likely become a part of your family, and it’s important to pay her legally so that she can receive Medicare and Social Security benefits later in life. If you need help making sense of taxes or setting up a payroll account, Care.com HomePay can offer more information.

How to find a part-time nanny for your family

and why it’s harder than you think

Working with a part-time nanny can be the perfect solution for families who don’t need a full-time caregiver. Maybe you work part-time and don’t require complete coverage, or maybe your kids have graduated into full days at school, but still very much need that after-school coverage with an engaging and consistent nanny.

Whatever the reason, you’ve found yourself in the tricky maze of finding a part-time nanny for your family. Here are some useful tips on how to find the right solution for your family—and how to hold on to that person for the long term.

What’s the difference: part-time nanny vs.

babysitter?

While a babysitter can show up fairly often to help your family, the role is significantly different from a part-time nanny. Since a babysitter works as needed, they can easily turn down work with you in favor of other activities or commitments. A part-time nanny, on the other hand, commits to the hours you agree on at the onset of your working relationship and only cancels in rare instances or under the conditions you’ve outlined beforehand. A part-time nanny works on a regular schedule with you, showing up consistently when you need them.

A part-time nanny will also generally be more involved in your children’s upbringing and have a more long-term view of their work with your kids. It’s easy for you and them to make plans for the future—trips, long-term activities, and your child’s development—because you are all working under the assumption that you’ll be together for that time.

Why are part-time nannies harder to find than full-time nannies?

Part-time nannies usually have other commitments besides their work with you. They may be grad students, parents themselves, or pursuing creative careers like acting, which means relying on part-time nannying to finance their other endeavors. This is great for you, because it means they are not looking for a full-time salary, and because they bring all that energy and their skills from other pursuits into their work with your children.

However, some families struggle to find a part-time nanny, because there are fewer people looking for a part-time income who also are able to commit to a regular, steady schedule. While working as a full-time nanny is often associated with a long-term commitment and a career mindset, part-time nannying can be seen as ad hoc babysitting and risk leaving families in the lurch at the last minute.

How can working with a nanny agency help?

Because of the difficulty finding part-time nanny help on a long-term basis, many nanny agencies have long since abandoned families looking for a part-time nanny. But an agency who does take on the challenge can be a huge help in your search.

Here at Smart Sitting, our nanny agency team has over a decade’s worth of experience in helping families find reliable, long-term, part-time nannies. We know how the trends in the industry have changed over the years, and know the fluctuations that occur even over the span of each individual year.

With our tight-knit childcare community of sitters and nannies, we are able to listen in on what matters to part-time nannies and know how to help families both book and keep the candidates they really want for their kids.

We also get to know our sitters and nannies, so we understand their situation, their aspirations, and how a part-time nanny job is part of their bigger picture. This helps us match families’ and nannies’ expectations and make more happy matches than an ad in the local paper (that’s “online job listing site,” in 2022 terms).

The trick to keeping your part-time nanny

With our many years of experience working with part-time nannies, we’ve discovered a few tricks that help part-time nannies want to stay for the long haul. Most revolve around the same basic principle: treat their job like, well, a job.

By treating your part-time nanny with the same professionalism you’d expect from any other long-term job, the position becomes one your nanny can rely on and build their days, life, and plans around. Draw up a proper job contract and respect it, in terms of scheduling and notice of any upcoming changes to the job.

Consider including these benefits in your nanny contract:

I am a student of the Moscow State Law University named after O.E. Kutafin. I am looking for a job as a nanny for part or full time without accommodation (at any time). I have experience working with families with children of all ages. I am the eldest daughter in a large family, I constantly stayed with younger children, often helped friends and relatives. I like to study psychology, including methods that help in raising children. When entering a university, the choice was between pedagogical and legal. When working in families, my duties included basic child care, feeding, playing, walking and helping around the house. During the academic year I work as a Russian language tutor for children from 5 to 9Class. I have red diplomas of art and music and secondary schools. I am energetic, cheerful and patient. I mainly work with people, so there will be no problems finding common interests with children. Open for your suggestions!

I am looking for a weekend/part-time/full-time babysitting job. I have experience with children ages 2-9.years. I am a person with a good upbringing, honest, tactful and punctual. I have no bad habits. Responsibilities that I can perform: – Games with children that are entertaining and educational in nature. (hide-and-seek, catch-up, drawing, modeling from plasticine, reading books, making applications, sensory games.) – Helping the child in the process of feeding, changing clothes, helping in the implementation of hygiene procedures if the child cannot cope on his own. Simultaneously with helping the child, I show how to perform all of the above actions on your own. – Walks in the playgrounds / park. – Accompanying children from kindergarten or school home. – Escort to children’s circles or various sections. – Sometimes ready to carry out one-time small assignments. (For example, go to the store, put things in cupboards, wash dishes.) With the permission of the parents, I can fulfill these requests together with the child in order to show the child what work, order and independence are. I am very sociable with children, I like to ask them questions, I like to tell them about what surrounds us, I like to have conversations on various topics. With older children, I can carry out simple school assignments. * (doing assignments on literature, the world around me, I can help in writing a report, making a presentation in PowerPoint.) I am a person without a pedagogical education, but I independently study scientific literature on the upbringing and development of children. I am a person who is close to the Montessori pedagogical system. I try to be on the same wavelength with my children. My goal is to become a friend for a child and just have fun and interesting time. I can add that I am a hyper-responsible person. In my free time I like to play sports.

I am looking for a job as a nanny. My experience was in different age categories. 6 months experience with a 4 year old boy. The duties included: development by age, games, walks, instilling hygiene skills. The boy really liked to play with me, and I managed to instill in him the right behavior (he had ADHD).
