Parker Learning Gardens – Accessible Learning Environments

Reconnecting the Community to the World of Plants through Permaculture & Regenerative Gardening

31239 Lanes Turn Road, Eugene, OR 97408

Parker Learning Gardens is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Parker Learning Gardens provides a venue and model for designing and growing accessible learning environments to demonstrate how plants produce food, oxygen, clean water, habitat, fiber, and climate stability for all the Earth’s creatures, large and small. We seek to inspire, inform, and educate people through the teaching of science, nutrition, and ecology in our farm- and garden-based programs.

Through outdoor interaction, observation and discovery; emotional, behavioral, and intellectual development are supported. The gifts of the garden provide children and families the experience of gratitude, and future generations will benefit from enhanced environmental stewardship. It is natural and healthy to cultivate food and habitat, and we aim to reawaken this vital expression in our visitors for the benefit of our planet’s future.

Our name honors benefactors Jeanette and Richard Bennett Parker. Dr. Parker, a microbiologist, was an American pioneer in probiotics. Decades before 21st Century DNA technology suggested it, he taught that the natural world originates from invisible microbiomes.

By hosting immersive, age-appropriate educational activities, tours and classes we enable our visitors to discover, engage, learn and play in the garden environment. Our focus is in providing the scientific knowledge, ancient skills, tools and seeds we all need for the challenges they face. We practice organic regenerative agriculture to ensure the long term viability of our land and water resources for future generations.

PLG directors include teachers, social workers, scientists, artists, farmers, plant breeders and seed producers.

~~~
PLG’s list of interventions to achieve cultural change include:
– Providing early childhood educators with common scientific language for the names, stories and songs they weave to describe the world.
– Developing a 33-acre organic river bottom farm into a model for outdoor learning.
– Specialized gardens that teach food, fiber and medicine production plus pollution and drinking water cleanup.
– Developing new learning experiences and environments.
– The production facilities to share our efforts.
Future generations face dire biological challenges —famine, climate collapse, natural disasters and more pandemics. How will earth’s children clean up pollution? Protect biodiversity, the Earth’s web of life? Overcome resource depletion? Battle emerging diseases, antibiotic resistance and science denial?
Parker Learning Garden is taking strong steps to help people perceive, understand and protect their green world, the real world. Please consider helping us in this effort.
Learn About Our Program :: Parker
Program Summary
All curriculum development and teaching practices are guided by the Ten Common Principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools. Each year’s coursework revolves around a school-wide “Essential Question,” as well as on specific concepts and content in the academic disciplines, which reflect the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
Parker organizes instruction into integrated domains that include all the conventional subject areas:
  • A/H – Arts and Humanities; includes History, Philosophy, Social Sciences, Literature, and Visual and Performing Arts
  • MST – Mathematics, Science and Technology; includes Mathematics, all the Sciences, and Technology.
  • Spanish – Spanish language and culture; instruction intended to enable students to communicate effectively and respectfully in Spanish-speaking cultures.
  • Wellness – Health and Physical Education; integrated curriculum combining aspects of both traditional health classes with physical education, adventure programming, fitness skills and other mind-body connection skills.
Students are divided by division rather than grade level. There are three divisions at Parker:
  • Div I – Roughly 7th and 8th grades
  • Div II – Roughly 9th and 10th grades
  • Div III – Roughly 11th and 12th grades
Div I and II are multi-year curricular cycles while Div III is comprised of semester and year-long Courses.
Class groups include a heterogeneous mix of 15 to 30 students whose ages span several years, and who work with one or two faculty members toward mastery of common standards. Every student is part of an Advisory group comprised of approximately 12 students and a faculty adviser.
Students are expected to develop and exhibit certain Habits of Learning in their academic work and in daily life. They are assessed based on these Essential Skills:
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening and Media Analysis
  • Oral Presentation
  • Research
  • Artistic Expression
  • Mathematical Problem-Solving
  • Technical Communication
  • Scientific Investigation
  • Technology
  • Systems Thinking
  • Spanish Language
  • Wellness
For the most part, the first six skills are assessed by A/H teachers, the second five by MST teachers, and the final skills by Spanish or Wellness teachers, respectively. Each of these skills comes with a set of Criteria for Excellence. These criteria describe what students must do in order to meet expectations in a particular skill area. They are the same across Parker’s three divisions. These criteria are posted in classrooms and are available in the Main Office. They are the basis for the individual rubrics designed to assess student work.
When a student hands in a piece of work, it is assessed based on the rubric developed for the assignment. For example, in a writing assignment, the student may “know his point and make it clear” (one of the Criteria for writing), but might not “support his ideas with enough details and evidence” (another Criterion). In this way, the students can use the Criteria within the rubric as a checklist when they are editing or revising their work or responding to the work of their fellow students.
Assessments are based on the Parker scale:
  • Beginning – Student is beginning to meet expectations for the division
  • Approaches – Student is approaching expectations
  • Meets – Student meets expectations
  • Exceeds – Student exceeds expectations
Student work and progress is exhibited via Portfolios. Students can gateway from one division to the next based on Promotion by Portfolio and the successful completion of a Gateway Portfolio. Students gateway one domain at a time. It is entirely possible for students to be in different divisions for different domains.
Seniors prepare a Graduation Portfolio and meet additional Graduation requirements in order to be awarded a diploma from Parker.
The Parker School does not rank its students, nor does it award letter grades, honors or prizes. However, Parker students do take the required Massachusetts state assessments (MCAS) at grades 8 and 10, as well as Stanford 9 achievement tests and the usual array of college entrance examinations such as the SAT and ACT.
Peter Parker at school and at home (“Spider-Man: Homecoming” dir. Jon Watts) : Daily Culture
Spiderman is the closest superhero to the audience, and therefore the most popular. In his free time from heroism, he lives the life of an ordinary person: he goes to school or college, delivers pizza or takes pictures for the noisy editor-in-chief of The Daily Bugle, goes on dates with Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy. The appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe of the company’s most popular character, its symbol, was a matter of time. The solo picture of Spider-Man, as expected, was accompanied by numerous rumors from insiders, memes with Tobey Maguire sobbing and other fan hysteria. Having successfully tested Tom Holland in Civil War, Marvel is releasing the sixteenth film in the MCU, Spider-Man: Homecoming.
“Homecoming” is a prom (even though Peter is still in 10th grade) at Peter Parker’s school, but you and I understand about returning where and who the name says. The return took place taking into account all the mistakes of previous adaptations, the main of which is a large number of villains. True, in “Homecoming” in addition to the Vulture, there is also the Shocker and the Tinkerer, but in the film they act at the level of simple henchmen. Now Marvel can afford to throw around those big Spidey antagonists, they have a lot more in store. In good Marvel tradition, the film has a lot of humor and references, the most interesting of which is the appearance of Uncle Miles Morales (another Spider-Man) in the episode. All scenes with Tony Stark were shown in the trailer, so you don’t have to worry that he will pull the blanket over himself. This picture is entirely about Peter Parker and Spider-Man, and even the very convincing Michael Keaton in the role of the Vulture, it seems, was not allowed to play out in full force, they did not add spectacular scenes and monologues so as not to distract attention from the main character.
Everyone would have had enough of Marvel movies if the company hadn’t constantly explored new genres. Doctor Strange is a fantasy, The Winter Soldier is a spy thriller, Guardians of the Galaxy is a space opera, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a teen comedy by John Hughes. The fact that the film will be similar in spirit to Hughes films such as 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was announced by the creators even before filming began. Schoolchildren from Sam Raimi’s paintings now look as strange compared to schoolchildren from Jon Watts’ film as 30-year-old schoolchildren in Jerry Lewis’s The Nutty Professor look to today’s viewer. New images of Flash Thompson, Mary Jane break all the stereotypes replicated in comics, cartoons and films.
In Sam Raimi’s trilogy and Mark Webb’s dilogy, events developed as follows: a spider bite, the death of Uncle Ben, the realization of new opportunities, the first attempt to detain the criminal and the superhero is ready. There is no origin story in Homecoming, with Parker making only one passing reference to a radioactive spider. The costume, which the hero previously acquired by detaining several robbers, is given immediately. Moreover, this suit is a real technological miracle, it can do everything, but Peter almost nothing. The creators turned the history of the superhero on its head, periodically sending greetings to their predecessors, primarily Sam Raimi, each time wittily knocking down the pathos when parodying famous scenes: here is the Spider straightening up to its full height against the background of the American flag, after telling the old woman the way , and then does a somersault against the background of the same flag at the request of a local hot dog seller, but Spider-Man hangs upside down next to his lover, but the schoolchildren are embarrassed, and the elevator suddenly breaks down. Often Spider-Man finds himself in such uncomfortable situations in which he would not have risked putting him before. For example, how to move in an open field using a web? Welcome to reality. “If you’re nobody without a suit, then you’re nobody in a suit.” Throughout the film, Peter Parker is forced to prove that it’s not the costume that makes him a superhero. And, having won the final battle without his equipment, he gets it back, already rightfully deserved. The romance that has always been a big part of the Spider-Man stories comes to an ingenious end with a very interesting twist.
The ingenious writers from Marvel manage time after time to equally interest and delight both the most hardcore comic book fans and people who are skeptical of heroes in multi-colored tights and have no idea how a schoolboy got the ability to fly on a web. And thanks to them, Peter Parker’s life at school and at home is now as interesting to watch as Spider-Man’s CGI battles.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens July 6th.
Parkertronic. 35 Facts You Didn’t Know About Tony Parker Blog “Lantern” studies some details of the biography of the great Frenchman.
Tony Parker’s father, Tony Parker Sr., is an American basketball player. He graduated from the University of Chicago and has performed in Holland and Belgium. Actually, Parker Jr. became a Frenchman by chance: just a month after his birth, the family moved to Normandy, where his father played for Rouen and Denin.
Parker’s mother is a Dutch fashion model .
At the end of his career, he became a nutritionist and began to demonstrate knowledge on his son. At the same time, it was she who largely predetermined a successful career as a point guard when she found him a competent agent – Mark Fleischer.
Despite his roots, Parker devoted much of his time to football as a child. Everything changed after ’91 when he watched the NBA Finals and started following Michael Jordan. His room was plastered with posters of the Bulls, and he himself woke up at 3 in the morning to watch the next game. AT 9On the 7th, when Chicago came to France for the McDonalds tournament, Parker watched Jordan play firsthand.
Parker’s basketball path was predetermined not even by his father, but by his godfather Jean-Pierre Staelin . It was he who spotted Parker Sr. and it was he who helped his son find himself. In general, Staelen is known as one of the best scorers of the French championship in the 60s and the author of a record 71 points, but in the context of modernity, his number is more known. Under the nine, Parker plays in honor of his godfather, who died at 99th.
The word “nine” was also tattooed on the neck of Eva Longoria’s ex-wife. Then was mixed.
As a child, Parker played outdoors in Chicago . When his parents divorced, Parker Jr. visited his father in the summer and learned the nature of basketball from the other side of the ocean – “with a tough game and endless trash talk.”
Parker had the opportunity to study at American schools and universities, but he turned it down . Both of Tony’s younger brothers left France and tried to become basketball players through the American education system. Parker also had invitations at both the school and college levels, he even practically agreed to go to UCLA, but changed his mind at the last moment.
Parker studied economics at the Institute of Physical Education and Sports.
In his first practice with San Antonio, Parker was eliminated by Lance Blanks .
Blanks in the early 90s tried to get into the NBA, but after several years in Detroit and Minnesota (average performance of a defender – 2. 0 points), he went to earn money in countries exotic for basketball – Germany, Hungary and Cyprus. By 2001, when the Spurs invited Parker to pre-raft camp, Blanks was 35 and worked as a scout for the team: it took him only 10 minutes to finish off the young Frenchman, he simply crushed Parker with tough physical custody and did not let him do anything .
Although Parker had just arrived from France and went straight from the plane to training, this did not stop Popovich from yelling at both the defender and his agent: “He is soft-bodied, and I need a person with character and core. And he plays as if he were sitting in a cafe in Montmartre with wine and a croissant. I don’t want to see him again.”
San Antonio didn’t think they could pick Parker. After the first review, Popovich spat and changed his mind only when R. C. Buford showed him a video with the best games performed by the Frenchman. At the second training session, the coach did not just like Parker. After her, Popovich said that the guy was too good. So much so that he would never fall to the Spurs’ 28th pick. Especially when so many clubs need a point guard.
All attempts to make an exchange and climb up failed.
Parker was two minutes away from being a Celtics player.
Parker became the youngest player ever to play as a starting point guard at NBA . He arrived at San Antonio at 19, and it only took him a few games to earn a place in the starting five.
Tony Parker is convinced that he invented the floater. According to the Frenchman, such a thing did not exist before him, and he had to resort to such an unusual throw, since he was very small. Bob Kuzi’s opinion on this matter is unknown.
Four cats live in Parker’s house.
Parker left Nike and moved to Peak.
Parker nearly beat Steve Kerr to death .
At first, the point guard suffered from Popovich to the fullest: the coach planted him for mistakes and preferred to give more time to the veterans. After one of these – ignoring the instructions of the coach – the Frenchman could not even reach the bench. Popovich attacked him, yelling, “You know I’m crazy. Do that one more time and I’ll release Steve Kerr at 95 minutes in every match!
Parker has completely changed his shooting technique during his years in the NBA .
By 2005, the Frenchman showed the worst career indicators for himself in three-point accuracy (27.6) and free throws (65). For the next two seasons, he worked a lot with Chip Engelland, the Spurs’ shooting coach, and changed the game diametrically: on the one hand, Parker reduced the number of long-range attempts to a minimum (from more than 200 to 40), on the other, he corrected the shooting movement and the position of the big finger. Last season, field goal percentage rose to 52 and free throws to 85.
Tony Parker collects comics.
In Asterix and the Olympics, Tony Parker appears as Parkertonix .
Five people work for Tony Parker : a bodyguard, a cook, a gardener, a man in charge of the pool, and a man in charge of the house. In a year, their services cost the Frenchman 200 thousand dollars.
Tony Parker promotes the Maverix electric skateboard.
According to the system tested in the league, Tony Parker is the fastest player in the league . The statistics department, based on cameras installed in 10 of the league’s 30 arenas, found that the season before last, the defender developed a speed of 33.5 kilometers per hour.
Tony Parker is learning to play the piano .
Tony Parker gave his name to the cartoon character .
The current contract did not prevent Tony Parker from trying all the advantages of bungee jumping . The Frenchman made a jump near Las Vegas, flying 300 meters.
In 2011, Parker became France’s highest paid athlete when he signed a 4-year, 50 million contract with San Antonio.
During the 2011 lockout, Parker played for Villeurbanne and received 1.5 thousand euros per month .
Parker has owned a part of Villeurbanne (20 percent of the shares) since 2009. With such a salary, he himself paid for his insurance, which amounted to 250 thousand for three months.
Parker is a fan of poker . Since 2010, Tony has been playing on the BetClic website, and in 2011 he began to officially sponsor it. In parallel, for charitable purposes, he also organized several poker tournaments.
Parker promotes Tissot watches, and sometimes it looks too intrusive .
Despite his penchant for flopping, Parker never complains about injuries to coach . In the middle of last season, the Frenchman missed an elbow from Chris Paul, but continued to play: Popovich found his leader injured only after the first half, when he saw that he was not shooting from a distance. And he was angry.
On RMC Sportif radio, Tony Parker hosts a program called The Tony Parker Show .
The program aired from 2004 to 2007, and in 2011, during the lockout, Parker resumed broadcasting. Mostly basketball players come to visit him, but other athletes often visit him.
Tony Parker’s car collection (two Ferraris, a Lamborghini and a Cadillac) also includes the DeLorean DMC-12, one of the most famous cars in the world .
Tony Parker retired from music.
Rap and hip-hop fan Tony Parker decided to keep up with his American colleagues and tried himself in music. His only album, titled TP, was released in 2007. Before EuroBasket 2013, the defender said that musical experiments were over forever.
