Sun Valley CoS
Find Your Place in the Sun
Welcome to the Sun Valley Community of Schools. Following Superintendent office’s vision to personalize services and supports for families and schools and make District offices more accessible to the local community, I am excited to announce that we have launched the Sun Valley Community of Schools Office. The office is located at the Local District Northeast Office on the Byrd Middle School campus and is open from 7:30 to 4:30 daily.
I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to serve as the Community of Schools Administrator for Sun Valley and I am looking forward to building a sense of community around the network of 23 schools that this office will support.
I have 6 years of experience working as a Director in the Sun Valley, Arleta and Pacoima area and I have had the privilege of working with nearly every school in our Community of Schools at some time in the past. Before becoming a Director at the Local District office, I served as a principal for 9 years at Vintage Magnet School in North Hills and before that an assistant principal and teacher at many different locations around the San Fernando Valley.
As we look to open this year, the Coronavirus has created unprecedented circumstances for schools. I know that families are facing many hardships due to the pandemic and that schools remaining closed only adds to the challenges that parents face as they juggle their own need to work and provide childcare for their children. In order to ensure that our community is healthy and safe, we must follow the guidance of health officials to determine when we can resume a normal routine.
Despite this uncertainty, I am committed to providing you, parents, students and staff, with the best customer service and support possible as we navigate the challenges together this semester. I want to hear from you and help in any way that I can. Biography
American singer, composer, guitarist who stood at the origins of American-Mexican rock and roll (Chicano rock). His real name is Ricardo Esteban Valenzuela Reyes.
Born to an ethnic Mexican family. Since childhood, absorbing the traditional Mexican music of mariachi, flamenco, rhythm and blues, by the age of five, Richie began to show interest in writing. Supported by his father, Richie tried guitar, trumpet, and drums. Despite his natural left-handedness, Richie learned to play the guitar in the traditional “right-handed” way and often took a guitar with him to Pacoima Junior High School, where he played and sang with friends. At 11, he made a solid wood electric guitar himself, which he used until he bought himself a Stratocaster. At 16, Richie was invited to the local band “Silhouettes” as a guitarist. After some time, the lead singer left the group and Richie took his place. 19October 1957, Richie made his debut as a member of the Silhouettes group. In addition, he performed solo at parties.
Richie’s career lasted only 8 months. In the middle of 1958, Bob Keane, the owner of a small label Del-Fi Records, came to Valens, who signed an agreement with him on May 27, 1958. At the suggestion of the manager, the stage name Ritchie Valens was chosen so that white listeners would not be embarrassed by the Spanish surname. Famous songs were recorded: “Donna”, dedicated, according to legend, to Richie’s school friend Donna Ludwig, “La Bamba”, a Mexican folk song processed in a rock and roll manner, and “Come On, Let’s Go!”. Valens left school, deciding to concentrate on his musical career. Early 19At the age of 59, Buddy Holly invited Wales to participate in a joint tour. On February 3, 1959, the Beechcraft Bonanza carrying Valens, Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper crashed. The pilot and all passengers were killed. Don McLean dubbed this tragedy “The Day the Music Died”.
In 1987, the film-biography “La Bamba” was released. In 2001, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Richard Stephen Valenzuela (May 13, 1941 – February 3, 1959), professionally known as Richie Valens was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. A rock and roll pioneer and forefather of the Chicano rock movement, Valens was killed in a plane crash eight months into his recording career. [3]
Valens had several hits, most notably “La Bamba”, which he adapted from a Mexican folk song. Valens transformed the song into a song with a rock rhythm and beat, and it became a hit in 1958. [4] [5] making Valens a pioneer of the Hispanic rock and roll movement. He also had a number two hit in America with “Donna”.
On February 3, 1959, what became known as “The Day the Music Died”, Valens died in an Iowa plane crash, an accident that claimed the lives of fellow musicians Buddy Holly and J.P. “Big Bopper” Richardson, and also pilot Roger Peterson Valens was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
- Alexander Rybak
Early Life
Valens was born Richard Stephen Valenzuela in Pacoima, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles. His parents, Joseph Stephen Valenzuela (1896–1952) and Concepción “Concha” Reyes (1915–1987), were from Mexico. He was the second of five siblings with older brother Bob Morales, younger sisters Connie and Irma, and younger brother Mario Ramirez.
Valenzuela was brought up on traditional Mexican mariachi music as well as flamenco guitar [6] R&B, and blues jump. Valenzuela showed interest in making his own music by the age of five. His father encouraged him to take up guitar and trumpet, and later he taught himself to play the drums. Although Valenzuela was left-handed, he was so eager to learn how to play the guitar that he mastered the traditional right-handed version of the instrument.
By the time Valenzuela was in high school, he would bring his guitar to school and sing and play songs to his friends in the stands. [7] When he was 16 years old, he was invited to join the local band The Silhouettes (not the band known for their hits Get a Job). He started out as a guitarist, and when the main vocalist left the band, Valenzuela took over the position. 19October 1957 he made his debut with the group “Silhouettes”.
Valenzuela attended Pacoima Junior High School (now Pacoima High School) and San Fernando High School. [8]

Valenzuela, a self-taught musician, was an accomplished singer and guitarist. In his performances, he often improvised new lyrics and added new riffs to popular songs while he played.
Bob Keane, owner and president of the small label Del-Fi Records in Hollywood, received a tip in May 1958 from San Fernando High School student Doug Macchia about a young performer from Pacoima named Richard Valenzuela. The kids knew the performer as “Little Richard from San Fernando” Comparable to Little Richard, Keane went to watch Valenzuela play Saturday Morning Matinee at a movie theater in San Fernando. Impressed by the performance, he invited the youth to audition at his home in Silver Lake area of Los Angeles, where he had a small recording studio in his basement. His recording equipment consisted of an early stereo tape recorder (a two-track Ampex 601-2 portable) and a pair of Neumann U-47 condenser microphones.0003
After this first audition, Keane signed Valenzuela with Del-Fi on May 27, 1958. At this point, the musician took the name “Ritchie” because, as Keane said, “there were a few ‘Richards’ at the time and I wanted things to be different.” Similarly, Keane recommended shortening his surname to “Valens” from [9] Valens was ready to enter the studio with the support of an entire ensemble.Musicians included René Hall, Carol Kay, and Earl Palmer.First songs recorded at Gold Studios Star Studios at one studio session one afternoon on July 19’58, were “Let’s Go”, original (attributed to Wales/Kun, real name Keane) and “Framed”, Leiber and Stoller melody. Printed and released within days of being recorded, the record was a success. Wales’ next LP, double side A, the last entry released during his lifetime, contained the song “Donna” (written about a real girl, Donna Ludwig. [10] ) along with “La Bamba”. It has sold over a million copies and was awarded a gold disc by the Recording Industry Association of America. [11]
By the autumn of 1958, Wales’ career forced him to leave school. Keane booked performances at venues throughout the United States and appearances on television programs. Valens had a fear of flying due to a bizarre accident at his junior high school when, on January 31, 1957, two planes collided over a playground, killing or injuring several of his friends. [12]
Death

Grave of Valens and his mother Concepción in San Fernando Mission Cemetery
After February 2, 1959, Clear Lake, Iowa (which ended around midnight), Holly, Richardson, and Valens departed Mason City in a small plane that Holly had chartered. Valens was on the plane because he won the toss with Holly’s backup guitarist Tommy Allsap. Bassist Holly Waylon Jennings volunteered to give up his seat on the plane to J. P. Richardson, who had been ill with the flu. [13] Around 00:55 on February 3, 1959, a three-seat Beechcraft Bonanza traveled to Fargo, North Dakota, and crashed a few minutes after takeoff for unknown reasons. The crash killed all three passengers and pilot Roger Peterson. As with Holly and Richardson, Valens suffered massive and permanent head injuries along with trauma due to brute force being applied to his chest. At the age of 17, Valens was the youngest person to die in a plane crash.
Tragedy inspired singer Don McLean to write his hit 1971 years of “American Pie”, immortalizing February 3 as “The Day the Music Died”. Valens’ remains were interred at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery, Mission Hills, Los Angeles, California.
Legacy

Valens was a pioneer of Chicano rock and Latin rock, and has inspired many Mexican-born musicians. He influenced the likes of Los Lobos, Los Lonely Boys, and Carlos Santana as he achieved national success at a time when there were very few Hispanics in American rock and pop music. He is considered the first Latin American to successfully transition into mainstream rock.
“La Bamba” proved to be his most influential record, not only because it hit the pop charts, performed entirely in Spanish, but also because of its successful combination of traditional Latin American music with rock. Valens was the first to use this formula, which was later adopted by such different artists as Selena, Caifans, Cafe Takuba, Circo, El Gran Silencio, Aterciopelados, Gustavo Santaolalla and many others in the Latin alternative scene. Ironically, Valenzuela’s family spoke only English at home, and he knew very little Spanish. Valens learned the text to spell “La Bamba” phonetically in Spanish. In 2019Wales’s version of “La Bamba” was chosen by the United States. Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry as “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant”. [14] [15]
“Come On, Let’s Go” was recorded by Los Lobos, the Ramones, and the Paley Brothers (Ramones on guitar, bass and drums and the Paley Brothers on vocals), Tommy Steele, the Huntington, The girl is in a coma, and McCoys. Johnny Rebb and his Rebels recorded the song for Leedon/Canetoad Records in Australia. “Donna” has been recorded by such diverse artists as MxPx, Marty Wilde, the Youngbloods, Clem Sneed, Cappadonna, and The Misfits.
Robert Quine cites Wales’ guitar playing as an early influence on his style. Valens has also inspired Jimi Hendrix, Chan Romero, Carlos Santana, Chris Montez, and Keith O’Conner Murphy, among others.
His mother, Valensa Concha, who died in 1987, is buried next to him. [16]
