Little Sproutlings Daycare & Learning Center
I cannot speak highly enough of Little Sproutlings, and the negative review posted below couldn’t differ more from our experience.
Ayesha has cared for our daughter for the past year (since she was about 1.5 years old), and she has thrived in the activity-filled, structured yet warm environment.Ayesha clearly bonds with all the children in her care, understands their unique personalities, and partners with parents to make sure that they thrive in her care.
On the issue of compliance with Covid procedures/her conduct throughout the pandemic: In my experience, Ayesha has adhered strictly to all the required protocols (mask-wearing, temperature checks, keeping children home for any symptoms of illness, etc.). We have never been charged for any time that was not already agreed under the terms of our contract, and I believe on a couple of occasions we were not charged when Ayesha would have been within her rights to do so.
Ayesha has always behaved responsibly, transparently and taken her role as caregiver to our daughter with the utmost seriousness. Little Sproutlings is clearly more than a business for her-it is her vocation. Any family seeking a loving, in-home daycare experience for their little one in the Olney area would be lucky to join Little Sproutlings!…

Bright Hearts Childcare
When I went looking for care for my infant son, it was important to me to find a provider who would regularly read to him. Bright Hearts does that and so much more! He is now a toddler who is happy to wave good bye and go to school each morning and regularly comes home with a new word, song, oraction to show us. We would recommend Bright Hearts to anyone who is looking for a caring environment that does a great job of balancing fun and learning….

Mojy’s Darlings Child Care, Llc
Our son was one of the first babies at Mojy’s Child Care and had stayed there for 3.5 years. They not only treated him like their own son, they treat my husband and I like families. Mojy has always been very caring and loving. She prepared food for the kids so that we had one less thing to worryabout. And when we were running a little late to pick up the baby, she was very understanding. Their facility is kept very clean and safe. Mojy, her family and staff sometimes would organize events (such as Halloween Party, New Year celebration, or summer picnic in the park, etc.) to reconnect with families whose kids grew up in her daycare. Our son loves Mojy dearly and is very attached to her family. We truly felt that we were very lucky to have found Mojy’s daycare and would strongly recommend her to families who’s looking to find a loving and reliable place for their precious little ones….

Joyland Child Care
I have to say this is by far one of the few high end daycares located in this area.My wife and I researched for months trying to find a good fit for our two children.By the grace of God we found Beena and Pam.They were very welcoming to our little family when we first met.We did a family visit firstto get the children acquainted with the new surroundings. To our surprise the children took to the new environment right away.Beena offered to let the children stay one day for a few hours while my wife and I had a well deserved day out together.Just to see how the kids would do and interact with other children enrolled there.Honestly I expected to get a call any hour that the kids were ready to leave. 5 hours later when we went to pick them up our children didn’t want to go home! They had made new friends, gotten new toys to play with, and Beena and Pam had already thought them a little song to sing.My wife and myself were speechless! Needless to say after talking it over on the ride home we enrolled out children right away.It is now three months later and our two little ones have excelled. Our youngest was a little shy at first and since has come out of her shell so to speak.Beena and Pam are very much apart of our family now and our children even refer to Pam as Grandma. We are truly blessed that we discovered Joyland daycare. My wife and I as well as our children can not say enough good things about our experience here.It is truly a loving and learning environment for every child there….

Recent Review:
Our son was one of the first babies at Mojy’s Child Care and had stayed there for 3.5 years. They not only treated him like their own son, they treat my husband and I like families. Mojy has always been verycaring and loving. She prepared food for the kids so that we had one less thing to worry about. And when we were running a little late to pick up the baby, she was very understanding. Their facility is kept very clean and safe. Mojy, her family and staff sometimes would organize events (such as Halloween Party, New Year celebration, or summer picnic in the park, etc. ) to reconnect with families whose kids grew up in her daycare. Our son loves Mojy dearly and is very attached to her family. We truly felt that we were very lucky to have found Mojy’s daycare and would strongly recommend her to families who’s looking to find a loving and reliable place for their precious little ones….

I have to say this is by far one of the few high end daycares located in this area.My wife and I researched for months trying to find a good fit for our two children.By the grace of God we found Beena andPam.They were very welcoming to our little family when we first met.We did a family visit first to get the children acquainted with the new surroundings. To our surprise the children took to the new environment right away.Beena offered to let the children stay one day for a few hours while my wife and I had a well deserved day out together.Just to see how the kids would do and interact with other children enrolled there.Honestly I expected to get a call any hour that the kids were ready to leave.5 hours later when we went to pick them up our children didn’t want to go home! They had made new friends, gotten new toys to play with, and Beena and Pam had already thought them a little song to sing.My wife and myself were speechless! Needless to say after talking it over on the ride home we enrolled out children right away. It is now three months later and our two little ones have excelled.

Children’s quarantine: what to do if there is no one to leave the child with

“I have two children, the oldest is 12 years old, the youngest is five. The school and kindergarten were closed for quarantine due to the coronavirus. We don’t have grandparents, there is no one to look after the children. My husband and I are working. Unscheduled long vacations are a joy for children, but my heart breaks how they will sit at home alone. I called the clinic, asking if I could take sick leave to care for children because of the school quarantine. They said it wasn’t allowed. How can we, millions of working parents, get out now?
Irina, 36 years old, Moscow.

A representative of the Ministry of Labor of the Russian Federation comments: “Parents are not entitled to sick leave during school holidays. But businesses are encouraged to organize remote work at home for employees with children of preschool and school age. It is the right of the employer to refuse the opportunity to temporarily work from home. However, we expect all employers to understand the need to counter the spread of coronavirus infection and organize work from home for all employees whose functionality allows them to perform production tasks from home. We recommend that all employers, if possible, transfer employees to this mode of work – from home. The Labor Code allows you to organize work at home, if working conditions allow. That is, if an employee has the necessary resources to do their work from home, or the company can provide them with such resources. In addition, parents of young children of preschool age should be aware that, by law, women with children under three years of age, single parents and guardians raising a child under the age of five, and workers with disabled children cannot be sent on a business trip without their consent.

“Non-contact” child
They are obedient, most of all they like to be near their mother, and in the company of other adults they feel quite well. They obviously like to sit at home more than to walk. And if they have to go outside, they usually bypass the sandboxes and take their mother away from the playgrounds.
Sometimes a mother honestly brings her child to the playground, but it does not show any enthusiasm, is afraid of the noise of the children’s crowd and clings to the saving mother’s knee. Other children quickly take away the toys prepared for acquaintance from the beginner, and he, as if spellbound, looks at them, doing nothing.
“Okay! These kids are bad, aggressive! Let’s go, baby, from here ”- this is the first line of mother’s behavior. Second: “Something is wrong. My child does not communicate well, something needs to be done about it. Maybe it’s time to see a specialist? However, not all psychologists share parental anxiety. Often, having tested the child using a wide variety of methods, they report: “You, mommy, worry in vain. Everything is fine with your baby, intelligence is normal (and sometimes even higher than normal). ”
Is there really a problem here? Is it really necessary for a child to communicate with peers?
Why do children communicate?
A child gets his first social experience while still in the family. By the way, often, in our enlightened age, parents, carried away by new-fangled theories of early development, forget about simple games, like “okay”, “cuckoo”, about the simplest game plots. But our ancestors, who left us these simple fun as a legacy, were wise. It is emotional games and emotional communication that are most important at this age for the further development of the child. Have you seen in our society a person who cannot read? If you do not take into account the social lower classes, then there are very few of them. Have you met people who find it difficult to communicate? Yes, every second person has problems with communication!
Of course, in the cradle, the baby does not need constant contact with peers. For now, parental society is quite enough for him. But after one and a half to two years, his world is expanding. And the further, the more he will need both contacts and conflicts with other children.
The first experience of relationships largely determines how a person will build them in the future, how he will treat himself and the people around him. After all, only in communicating with each other, children can show vivid emotions, scream, laugh, get angry, finally. They learn to get out of conflict situations on their own, put up with it and get involved in a new game. An adult, from the height of his authority, establishes strict rules in relations with a child. And children, communicating with each other, each time find a non-standard solution, because the behavior of peers is unpredictable.
But why do some children easily make contact, while others find it extremely difficult?
A narrow circle…
If a child spends all his time alone with his mother (grandmother, nanny, etc.), then there is a feeling that he “does not need anyone else”. Alas, mother often supports this illusion. It’s so nice to realize that there is a small helpless creature for whom you are vital … Sometimes this feeling is described with the words: “I feel him like myself.” Psychologists call this connection symbiotic, mother and child, as during pregnancy, feel like one organism.
In this case, it is very difficult for the mother to release the grown chick from under her warm wing. And yet it must be done, because he will not be able to spend the rest of his life under it.
By the way, a curious thing was noticed. When the child’s social circle is too narrow (mother is sad on the playgrounds, there are not enough friends, there are rarely guests in the house), a quiet and docile child, once in the society of peers, suddenly starts to fight. And the thing is that he simply does not know how to communicate differently. He knows perfectly well how to make a request to an adult, how to show his interest, and he simply has no idea what to do with a peer.
Strategy and tactics of your actions
- Try to gradually expand your social circle (both your own and children’s). After all, such problems usually arise when the mother herself is somewhat closed. A personal example in this case is the best way to “bring the baby out into the world.”
- Take your child to new places more often. It is not at all necessary that these places be crowded (on the contrary: a large crowd of people does not contribute to close communication). And just in a large team, the child may feel most uncomfortable. After all, often the baby is afraid not so much of communication as aggression, loud screams. For example, when such a child first enters a kindergarten, it is very difficult for him to endure the noise and screams of a large children’s group. He kind of turns off, spins, sings songs to himself, trying not to notice anyone next to him.
- Try to make friends with families, as the unforgettable Gosha used to say from “Moscow that does not believe in tears. ” Choose a calm, non-aggressive “classmate”, the most attractive to your heir. Invite him to visit, come visit yourself. And gradually try to organize a children’s game. Your “non-contact child” will feel more confident in its territory.
- Psychologist Maria Ryakhovskaya, employee of the Center for Education in Development, advises : “If at first your son or daughter does not want to get involved in the game, start playing with another child yourself. Just don’t demonstratively oppose children: “Since you don’t want to play, then I will only do it with Vanya!” Let your child quietly watch the action. He will watch as long as he needs to. And then at some point he himself will want to take part in such an interesting activity.
How good am I!
Difficulties in communication often arise in children who have grown up with a tight rein. Such children are often scolded and little praised. From early childhood, they0010 must (understand, do, know, be able to – underline as necessary). These requirements are almost always overstated, and as a result, the child withdraws into himself, because only alone with himself does he not hear constant shouting and does not receive another confirmation of his failure. And how a person evaluates himself, so he is perceived in society. The higher the level of anxiety and the lower the self-esteem, the less the child is accepted in the children’s company. For any offer to do something, such a child has a ready answer: “I can’t!”. Actually, “I can’t” means “I need your help.”
Strategy and tactics of your actions
- Do not hesitate to praise your child as often as possible. Especially in society.
- Before you give your child any task, first give a task of the same type, but obviously easy, which he will definitely cope with. Note how well the child did it! The next stage is a slightly more difficult task and definitely with your support: “I know you will definitely do it. Think a little more about the best way to do it. ”
- To take the initiative in the game, you need to be able to play, know how it’s done. Teach your son or daughter new games, and show some new plot twist, unusual move, etc. in the old ones. His success among peers will certainly increase!
Behind the glass
This is the most difficult version of the “non-contact child”. He is so closed off that he seems to fence himself off with a glass wall from the outside world. In psychology, this condition is called RDA – early childhood autism (from the Greek word autos – self, so autism is self-absorption). Psychiatrists diagnose autism as early as the first year of life, and sometimes as early as two or three years of age.
RDA is not uncommon: 4 to 15 cases per 10,000 children, more often in boys than in girls. This disease has several striking signs, which, unfortunately, parents often mistake for character traits and do not pay much attention to them. And, if this is the only child in the family, parents simply have nothing to compare the behavior of their child with.
Such a child does not cause problems, does not cause unnecessary trouble, he is again comfortable – he sits in the corner all the time: either he shifts the cubes from place to place, or he drives the machine back and forth. Five times. Ten. One hundred. And one is not afraid to stay, but, on the contrary, loves very much.
And only when such a child enters the children’s group, it becomes clear that he is very different from other children.
What behavioral features should alert parents?
- The child does not seek communication in any way. Even in infancy, he does not rejoice at his mother, does not revive when she appears.
- When they pick him up, he does not readily stretch out his hands, does not try to grab the adult’s neck in response, but hangs like a sack of flour.
- The baby does not like to make eye contact. Instead, he looks as if through people.
- These children develop speech late and with difficulty. They are able to monotonously repeat the same phrase many times. They repeat the same actions, they can swing for a long time, shake the rattle, clap their hands, etc.
- Autistic people have a special gait: sometimes on tiptoe, sometimes skipping. The usual expression on their faces is thoughtful detachment.
Strategy and tactics of your actions
- Psychologist Maria Ryakhovskaya recommends: “If you notice any signs of autism in your child, take him to a neuropsychiatrist. He will direct the baby to an electroencephalogram. After it, the diagnosis of autism can be made or removed absolutely accurately. In case of confirmation of the diagnosis, in no case do not panic. Your child is not crazy! This disease is quite amenable to correction. However, be prepared for joint long-term work with a psychologist.
- It is very important for a little autistic person to get out of the world of his dreams into the real, today. Therefore, involve him in household chores, give simple assignments, teach him to help the weaker ones. It’s great if he helps you take care of your “little brothers” (and it’s better to choose not fish or turtles, but someone warm and fluffy puppy, kitten, hamster). These animals are able to evoke a lively emotional response and become an object of concern: “we are responsible for those we have tamed.”
A step forward
The first children’s contacts are often aggressive – kids take away each other’s toys, beat “colleagues in the construction of Easter cakes” on the head with shoulder blades. Such a debut in the sandbox does not at all mean that these kids will always communicate only aggressively, this is only the first and simplest form of communication.
At the same time, the appearance of aggression is an important stage in the development of communication. The child begins to realize the concept of “mine – someone else’s”, he tries to stand up for himself, take the initiative in his own hands, be active.
For example, Vera has always been a non-contact child. And suddenly, at the age of five, she became aggressive towards other children. This scared the parents, they turned to a psychologist. However, aggression turned out to be a transition to a qualitatively new stage in the development of the Faith. The child became more active, began to notice children, paying attention to them in such a still primitive way.
Psychologist’s comment:
“Indeed, aggression is one of the most common ways to “get out into the big world”. Like it or not, the child must go through all the stages in his development, you can’t argue with nature.
Sometimes (in children without serious disorders in emotional development) readiness for communication appears by the age of seven, when they are already able to control their actions (in psychology this is called voluntary behavior). Sometimes parents complain that although their problem child behaves perfectly at school, at home he seems to “fly off the coils”: he screams, rushes like mad, does not want to listen to anyone. In fact, this behavior is quite natural. It is very difficult for such a child to keep himself within the framework of “correct behavior”, but he tries his best to do it. Naturally, then he needs a discharge. If this is your case, think about some sports activities after school, in which the child could throw out the accumulated energy. Just do not throw a little man who has communication problems immediately into a big team. You can start with a “single” sport, like swimming. The next stage is pair sports with a regular partner. And only then, with some caution, you can try to go in for sports in a large team, if your child has such a need.
The main thing is your active participation in the baby’s life, your help and support, your love and confidence that you can overcome all difficulties together. So it will be!

But we are in Moscow, there is plenty to choose from, in our district alone there are about 30 private kindergartens, the cost is 25-30 thousand per month, but nursery groups are more expensive for up to three years, there is more work with these kids

Given away for one purpose – teamwork, activities and variety.
Yes, she gets sick, but not often, and acute respiratory infections. Ttt. I am FOR the garden, they learn a lot there, get used to independence. But it still depends on the educators, they are golden with us. If there was an opportunity, I would give it to a private only because there are fewer children in the group. Although this is enough. I don’t work myself

On the plus side: she really likes the teachers, she has girlfriends. We like that there she learns discipline, understands the “rules of the team” and so on. They have joint classes – music, physical education, crafts. They prepare breakfast together.
In addition to kindergarten, we also go to dances.
The kids who sit in the kindergarten all day, honestly, it’s a pity, but, probably, the parents have no other opportunities… it won’t be good. Develop in terms of reading, writing, counting, etc. Moreover, lyceum groups have been canceled in Moscow now. This is all done very, very superficially. This is what parents should do.

Don’t worry, he will get all this from you at school, the older, the more difficult the disease goes. My child was ill with chickenpox at the age of 14, I thought I would go crazy, and up to 5-6 years this disease disappears like seeds

Whooping cough people are getting vaccinated now or not? I can’t remember in any way .. My mother told me that I had whooping cough in kindergarten, I don’t remember anymore, they get sick with it once. Our aunt at work, an adult at 35, turned out to be with whooping cough, she’s a trank, she didn’t know until she went to the doctor, she thought the flu, she seemed to have recovered and bouts of suffocating cough began later.

It’s hard to say. I like younger ones, I saw their diplomas, how they communicate with children. They are always happy to jump and run with the kids, dance and so on, which elderly ladies are deprived of. In addition, they work conscientiously in our kindergarten and they like the children, it can be seen + these are still experienced teachers, and not just from the university, they have their own children. In the fall I went to a friend, she lives next to the municipal garden, we walked next to the playground with our children, so there all the teachers are 45+ and there are very middle-aged ones (They sit on benches and shout at the children: don’t go, don’t take it, leave, idiot, where are you going, and it’s all about talking about complaints about sore legs and terrible children. .. There is even an opinion that a teacher, after 15-20 years of work, completely outlives himself, fatigue remains, such a person has little to give to children.

Do you even know that this vaccine is only for 10 years? And are you sure that your child at 30, 40, 50 years old will walk and do it all the time? I doubt. But the fact that, at your suggestion, he will get sick with windmills in adulthood and will endure it very hard, this is me with a probability of 90% guaranteed.
And read what any vaccination is in general

Everyone also did not want to go to the garden, they say, how is she there, poor.
But miraculously, the turn came, they gave me a ticket, and I went.
A week later she surprised everyone by coming from the garden, undressing herself and hanging her clothes on a chair. There was itself. With speech, the problems slowly disappeared, even though the garden is not a speech therapy one.
Well, I became more disciplined.
I’ll give mine to the garden as soon as the line comes up (if I’m lucky, I’ll eat it). And before that, I’ll just carry on developing classes.

2 nuts! Not everyone is so lucky. In all the municipal gardens that I examined, it was exactly like this + the managers immediately said that only half of the permanent workers, the rest had to be recruited every year, or even in the middle of the year. This is how they answered my question about the advertisements at the entrances to the gardens, they considered the 3 nearest gardens. The sample, of course, is small, but this option did not suit me. And how many people do you have in the group?

No, because:
– I doubt that children are VERY closely supervised. I’m afraid that the child can get into his mouth with dirty hands, he can eat sand or earth. This is terrible.
– Doubt about nutrition. Not only can it be of poor quality, it can also be unhealthy;
– I doubt the integrity of the educators. Suddenly, the child will not be treated carefully enough, will they suddenly raise their voice? Suddenly they don’t follow, and he falls?
– I doubt the adequacy of the children in the group. They can hit, do some nasty things. Such an age … At school, the children are already smarter.
– I’m afraid that it will hurt a lot. Let it be better to get sick after seven years – at school. It will no longer be so dangerous, and an older baby is easier to treat.
– I’m afraid that in the state kindergarten they can get vaccinated or manta without my knowledge. We are opponents of vaccinations, the schoolboy will already be able to kick back if something happens, but the kindergartener will not. Maim the child, it’s too dangerous.
– Well, little things like that they can force you to do something. Mine, for example, doesn’t sleep during the day, and I don’t want anyone to force him.
If I remember anything else, I’ll write. 🙂
Of course, in case of force majeure, you may have to think about it, everything happens in life, but so far we haven’t even started to stand in line.
Now I see myself as follows: at one and a half to start going to developmental schools (but not during the epidemic period). From the age of three, start going to sports or to the pool, in general, to some kind of physical activity in addition to the developmental program. At the age of 5-6 in preparation for school. Well, the plus is to practice at home.
Of course, I dream of the time when my son can be taken to a developmental program or a club, and at that time I will be able to go to work. :)) But not earlier than 3 years, of course.

Stifler’s mother
A garden is necessary for a child from 2-3 years old. They teach discipline, communication, independence. And without these things it is impossible to build either a career or a personal life. If you want happiness for your child, send it to the garden.

No, because:
– I’m afraid that the child may get into his mouth with dirty hands or eat sand or earth. This is terrible.
– Doubt about nutrition. Not only can it be of poor quality, it can also be unhealthy;
– What if the child will not be treated carefully enough, will they suddenly raise their voice? Suddenly they don’t follow, and he falls?
– I doubt the adequacy of the children in the group. They can hit, do some nasty things. Such an age … At school, the children are already smarter.
– I’m afraid that I will get sick a lot.
– I’m afraid that in the state kindergarten they can get vaccinated or manta without my knowledge.
1) Whether a child will dig sand does not depend on the teacher and “surveillance”, but on education. My mouth did not pull anything after a year, except for food. We went to the nursery and never in our group was there a case of someone eating the earth. And they are constantly forced to wash their hands.
2) Meals – not a restaurant, of course, but everything is done according to the norms.
3) Your child may fall, and that’s okay. Negative experiences are also part of adapting to life. The child must know what danger is and the boundaries beyond which it is impossible to cross.
4) In the kindergarten, someone can “hit”, and at school – beat. At school, children are much tougher, the load on the psyche is greater, and status in the team begins to play a role. In kindergarten, children are more or less equal. Between them there is no rivalry and reasons for it. But in the garden, the child learns to fend for himself.
5) Now there is such a program at the school that it is quite problematic to get sick in the first grade, because the material is passed at a frantic pace and if the child gets sick often, he will simply fall behind.
6) Now everywhere they require a parent’s signature on consent to vaccination. It’s just that no one does. They warn a few days in advance that the vaccination will be on such and such a day. So if you are against, just do not bring to the garden that day or sign a waiver.

I heard that sausages can give. There’s also GMOs. Or fried. I am against this.

I learned to stand up for myself very well at school. Until the age of 7, I simply could not understand how it is so at all if someone hits me. At 7, at least it was already clear to me that children are different, and there are abnormal ones, and we have to fight back. 🙂 Still, at 7, different books were already read, and parents already talked more about the difficulties of life.

I don’t care, especially in elementary grades.

Youth agency in Germany
About the German juvenile – Jugendamt. What it is, what it does, the statistics of weaning children in Germany, the reasons for separating a child from his family.
I have been asked questions about the German “juvenile” more than once. Basically, they were asked to confirm or refute various horror stories that have been generously served in all types of media lately. So an article on this topic, as they say, is overdue.
I want to say right away that I will not talk about juvenile justice in Germany in this article. Purely legally, the term “juvenile justice” means “juvenile law”. This is a subset of judicial law that deals with juvenile delinquents. If a sixteen-year-old teenager steals something from a store and is charged with it, he falls into the hands of juvenile justice. I understand that this is not at all what excites readers.
Jugendamt
Here we talk about the Jugendamt, the youth agency in Germany. It is this authority that manages the upbringing of German children. And that is what they mean when they talk about the “atrocities of German juvenile justice. ” First, some factual information: what it is in general and what it does in Germany.
According to the German law on the rights and protection of children and the law against homelessness, each district or city has a youth welfare office. In each city, this body may be called differently, such as: “Department of Children, Youth and Family”, “Department of Youth and Social Education”, and the like. But the range of duties of officials of this department is approximately the same everywhere:
- Ensuring the process of comprehensive development of the child
- Youth social assistance
- Child protection
- Young family support
- Help for parents in difficult life situations
- Organization of day care institutions
- Help with raising children
As part of its duties, the Jugendamt deals with the following:
- Ensures the existence of circles, sections, youth organizations and the like in the subordinate region
- Informs high school students about the possibilities of obtaining a profession, helps to determine the direction
- Responsible for campaigning among young people about a healthy lifestyle, explains that drugs, crime are bad
- Organizes courses for young parents, where they learn how to care for a child: swaddle, feed, dress, etc.
- Provides counseling on conflicts with children, crisis management
- Controls the sufficient availability and proper equipment of places for raising children: nurseries, kindergartens, other preschool educational institutions
- And finally, if there are problems in the upbringing of children in the family, the Jugendamt employees carry out the necessary and sufficient work to eliminate them, starting with explaining to parents their rights and obligations and ending with the removal of the child from the family.
As you can see, the responsibilities of the employees of the Youth Office are very extensive, and the supervision of negligent parents is just one of the many tasks that the employees of the Jugendamt are involved in. So the very assumption that there is some organization in Germany that does nothing but try to remove children from normal families is fundamentally wrong. But you need to understand that there is a German department that is responsible for correcting the situation if someone has problems with raising a child.
Raising a child in Germany
And here it is necessary to understand what is a “problem” in the process of raising a child in Germany from the point of view of the Youth Welfare Office and what is not. This is a key question, the answer to which gives rise to a lot of rumors, gossip and strange interpretations. I will try to list the main “hot” topics in order.
The most important thing for parents to learn in Germany is that it is forbidden to beat a child. This is prohibited by a special law adopted in November 2000, namely paragraph 2 of §1631 of the Second Code of Civil Laws. Here is a rough translation: “Children have the right to be raised without violence. Corporal punishment, mental injury and other degrading measures are prohibited.”
So, if someone, including parents, hits the child or even swings at him, or in any other way inflicts mental trauma on him, this is a problem. I understand that this is not easy for many parents to accept. I myself was flogged a couple of times as a child and I would not say that it was unfair. But in Germany, this is prohibited by law, which means that the Jugendamt is obliged to respond to this. One can argue for a long time on whether this law is correct or not, but in real life one must take into account that even such a sedative slap on the back of the head, which is common in Russia, to a child in Germany can become a reason for removing a child from a family and carrying out educational activities with parents. And it doesn’t matter that the child didn’t complain. He can be completely delighted with his dad and mom. But from the point of view of German law, they educate him incorrectly and this must be stopped. Cultural differences and mental subtleties of foreigners do not count. And ignorance of the law is no excuse.
It must be understood that the Jugendamt does not have an all-seeing eye that watches over parents day and night. His role is played by ordinary people. A loud cry from a neighbor’s apartment, a long cry from a child, the presence of abrasions and bruises on the child’s face can make the burgher think: “Oh, are they beating him? Somehow I can’t believe it, but it’s better to tell me where to go. ” And the bell rings in the Jugendamt office, and “normal” parents in a “normal” family start having problems. In general, it’s not enough just not to hit your children. It is necessary to educate them in such a way that none of the neighbors, acquaintances, or passers-by even thought of blaming their parents for something.
When can you leave a child unattended in Germany
Another problem that the Jugendamt can react to sharply is the question at what age can a child be left alone at home in Germany. Parents are required by law to look after their child to protect it from danger and to protect it from harming itself (Aufsichtspflicht). But there is no unambiguous regulation (so many hours at a certain age) in the topic “home alone”. Parents who are responsible for their baby should make their own assessment of the level of supervision they need. There are rather vague guidelines that are “regulatory obligations” in adjudication. Children should not be left alone at home if they go to kindergarten. But it is perfectly acceptable to leave a five-year-old man to play for half an hour in the nursery without your direct control. From school age, the boundaries become wider. A seven-year-old child can already be left alone for up to two hours.
But this is all acceptable only on one condition: for now everything is fine. If an unsupervised child harms himself or gets into a dangerous situation, this is a problem that, again, the Jugendamt must respond to. So you can leave children unattended in Germany, but only if you are absolutely sure that everything will be in order. While the parents are not at home, the normality of this situation is determined by neighbors, acquaintances and other inhabitants. It all depends on what happens when the child is left alone. I will give an exaggerated example: if a two-year-old baby, while his mother is not at home, walks on the windowsill by the open window, then, I think, you should not be surprised at the visit of not only the Jugendamt employee, but also the police, ambulance and firemen with a ladder.
Another point that foreign parents in Germany forget is that “unsupervised” does not only apply to the situation when children are left at home alone. For me, for example, starting from the age of five, it was normal to walk on my own. Go to the pond two kilometers from the house to swim. At the age of 7, I could get up at four in the morning and go fishing without telling anyone about it. At 10, I could generally go anywhere, up to walking along the highway in search of beer cans. In Germany, a child alone walking along the side of the autobahn is likely to cause such a panic that this emergency will be remembered for a very long time. Yes, children here are also not under constant supervision by their parents, but still, the scale of freedom is completely different. There are no dashing raids of children’s bicycle cavalry on gardening here. Children do not play war games quarter by quarter. Frames everywhere, borders everywhere. We have a playground opposite the house, and the children of Bulgarian parents one summer spent the whole day there from morning to evening. Until a German woman called the Jugendamt for the reason that “the children did not have water with them and they were not dressed for the weather.” Since then, they have not put their noses on the site.
Role of the Jugendamt in Germany
Let me summarize. In order not to have problems with the Jugendamt in Germany at all, parents should at least not hit their children, not leave them unattended for a long time and provide them with everything they need in terms of food, clothing and hygiene. Any violation of these minimum limits is almost guaranteed to lead to conflicts with the department for youth affairs. There are other reasons for bringing the attention of parenting oversight. This applies primarily to dysfunctional families: drunkenness, drug addiction, and the commission of crimes can call into question the ability to take care of their children. But this, I think, is clear to everyone.
We also have our own experience of dealing with the German Youth Office. One day, about five years ago, we received an official letter from this organization asking us to explain why our son did not go to a local school, but attends another, 35 kilometers from home. Calling his wife was enough to clarify the situation. Since then, representatives of the Jugendamt have not been interested in our family.
When can a child be picked up in Germany
By law, taking children into custody is an emergency measure. A child can be immediately taken away from the family only if there is a threat to his health, or if he himself asks for it. In this case, the return of children to the family can take much longer, if at all possible. But you still need to bring the situation to such a sad outcome. For the first time, social educators will have a serious talk with parents and give some time to correct the situation. It is likely that the officials of the Jugendamt will make several unexpected visits during this time. If, as a result of exhortations and conversations, no changes have occurred, then the worker of the department for youth affairs can take extreme measures. Usually appoint time of separation in half a year. During this period, parents must correctly respond to the claims of the Jugendamt. After all the requirements are fulfilled and the parents have proved that they can be responsible for their family, the children are returned.
There are situations when the help of the Jugendamt is simply needed. For example, if a single mother is seriously ill and needs urgent hospitalization. And from relatives, no one has the opportunity to take children. Then the option to transfer care of education to the structure of the department for youth affairs does not look so bad. But you need to be careful when using such “services” of the Jugendamt. Giving children away is easy, but returning them can be problematic. Surely, employees of the department will try to make sure that the danger has passed, that there will be no problems with education due to the illness, that there will be someone to look after the children, and that in general everything is fine in the family. The law obliges them to check that they will be no worse at home than in a shelter. And the concepts of “worse” and “better” can be interpreted in different ways. I know a case when one woman gave her four children to an orphanage in a difficult situation, and only two were able to return after solving the problems. The fact is that when checking by the Jugendamt, it turned out that the area of \u200b\u200bher housing is insufficient for four children to live, so she had to first find a new apartment. And the two older ones were not particularly eager to return home. It turned out that under guardianship they live better.
This scenario is also possible for disadvantaged families. When a child is taken into care, he is placed first in an orphanage, and then either in an orphanage or in a temporary foster family (Pflegefamilie). In the latter case, the child ends up in very good conditions, since people for the role of foster parents are selected quite strictly. They must have a sufficiently high and stable income, have the necessary living space for the child, be healthy, mentally balanced and take a special course in childcare. Foster children live with them for the time allotted by the Jugendamt officials and then return back to their home.
As for the German orphanages, of course, it is not as good there as in a family. I have never been to an orphanage in Germany, so I cannot say anything more definite. Judging by the pictures on the Internet, all the necessary conditions have been created for children there, and as for life without parents, there is little good in this, even in Germany, even in Russia, at least anywhere. But we have a German friend who, at the age of 15, left home for an orphanage, quarreled with her mother, and never returned. She says that she was much better there than with her parents. This does not mean that orphanages in Germany are heaven. It’s just that sometimes children do not enjoy life in their family. I can say for myself: at the age of 15, I also entered a military flight boarding school like the Suvorov School in order to get away from home scandals with my stepfather, and spent 2 years there. I liked it there and I did not regret that I left home. Although the conditions there were, of course, not homely. I came home for holidays or when I was sick, but I spent almost all of my life there at the age of 15-17. I still remember how I sobbed when I graduated from 11th grade and had to leave the boarding school.
In Germany, children can complain about their parents
The presence in Germany of an office where children can turn themselves in case of problems is not bad in itself. Therefore, children are informed about this possibility. In schools, they are given a hotline in the Jugendamt to call if their parents beat or humiliate them. Sometimes children dispose of the acquired knowledge for other purposes. For example, a child wants a new toy, but the parents cannot afford it and ask to wait until Christmas. An upset child rushes to the phone and calls the Jugendamt: my parents don’t love me, take me away! The further development of the situation entirely depends on the adequacy of the official receiving such a call. It goes without saying that at 9In 9.9% of cases, there will be no consequences. At most, they will call for a conversation and sort out the situation. Employees of the youth affairs department are the same people as everyone else, they also have children and they perfectly understand what’s what. But it is also impossible not to respond. Therefore, if it turns out that there are other problems in the family, then the Jugendamt employee will have to take measures to solve them. It turns out that because of a trifle, an empty quarrel with a child, you can suddenly attract the attention of the department, which will suddenly discover other problems.
Statistics on the admission of children to orphanages in Germany
According to statistics, the most common reason for children to end up in an orphanage is parents’ overwork. In 2012, there were approximately 40,000 cases of adoption of a child in a shelter in Germany, of which more than 17,000 were for the reason mentioned above. This statistic shows that in almost half of the cases, German parents themselves are happy to hand over the care of their children to the Jugendamt. On the website of the German state statistics you can see all the figures for the year 2012. I will give here the translation in the format “reason – number of cases”:
- Overwork of parents – 17289
- Problems with raising children – 6717
- Ignoring children – 4774
- Children who came to Germany without parental supervision – 4767
- Signs of violence – 3769
- Problems of integration in an orphanage or in a foster family – 2537
- Criminal problems – 2477
- Education problems – 1752
- Housing problems – 1254
- Drug or other addiction of a child – 1159
- Divorce of parents – 735
- Signs of sexual abuse – 635
- Other problems – 11003
- Total – 40227
- Of these, about 15,000 children immediately returned to their families.
In 2012 in Germany, 65,000 children and young people under the age of 21 lived outside their family of origin, representing approximately 0.43% of the total. In other words, we can say that approximately 1 out of 200 German children, for one reason or another, lives in an orphanage or with foster parents. If we do not consider cases when children are sent to an orphanage voluntarily (overwork, divorce, depression, illness, abandonment after childbirth, etc.) or due to the death of guardians, as well as international foundlings (of whom there were almost five thousand last year alone), then it turns out that the number of cases of forced removal of children in Germany is negligible. Even if we judge only by these statistical indicators, we can safely say that no atrocities of the German Jugendamt exist in nature. But negligent parents who take poor care of their children are, in general, a common occurrence. Asocial personalities, drunkards, drug addicts, mentally ill people cannot raise children. Given this fact, the number of children taken away in Germany has quite reasonable limits.
Although the Germans themselves record an increase in the number of children raised by the state. Even 4 years ago, this figure was 13% less than now. But they primarily attribute this not to the actions of the Jugendamt, but to an increase in the number of unemployed and a decrease in the standard of living in the country.
Jugendamt – evil or good?
I do not in any way deny the existence of individual shortcomings in the work of the Youth Office in Germany. As in any state system, there certainly have their excesses. Unskilled workers can also work in the Jugendamt. For example, people on welfare. In order not to lose help from the state, they have to agree to perform the so-called “1-Euro-Job” – work for 1€ per hour. From such employees it is quite possible to expect dishonest or incorrect performance of their duties.
If you purposefully look for information about how children in Germany are taken away from families for no reason, then it is not difficult to find something on the German Internet. Basically, these are the voices of desperate parents on the forums, looking for support among those who have already experienced such a disaster. The main claim against the Jugendamt at the moment is the placement of children in an orphanage for not the most compelling reasons. By law, the department should use this option only as a last resort. But some workers prefer to overdo it than to be the perpetrators of the tragedy and take the child from the family without waiting for the acute development of the situation. As a result, after the trial, children are usually returned to their families, but before that they are in an orphanage, rarely seeing their parents. This really happens and it’s not good. But the problem is by no means hushed up and there are a lot of articles covering it in the German press.

“I didn’t sign up for this” The story of a girl who moved to Egypt for two years, but returned to Russia She spent two years in an Arab country and nevertheless realized that the hot temperament and strict customs of the locals were not for her.
As part of a series of materials about those who moved abroad, Lenta.ru tells her story about life in Cairo.
Internship and the first time
The first time I went to Egypt at the age of 22, and not for vacation, but for an internship from the ISIC student organization in an orphanage, to help local children and teach them English. Well, more precisely, this is how it was voiced to us. As a result, it turned out that this is not an orphanage at all, but one of the most elite kindergartens in Cairo. Of course, I didn’t sign up for this: I went with an altruistic goal, but in the end I came to work for free for the benefit of some local uncle.
The internship lasted six weeks, which seemed long enough to me. I made many new friends and acquaintances in Cairo, so I decided to try to move there to work as an English teacher after graduation. Certainly not in kindergarten. So, at the age of 23 in 2014, I moved to Cairo for permanent residence.
The very first word I learned in Arabic was uncivilized. It sounds something like this: “aha”, and means “yes, you went to hell.” Friends just constantly repeated it, so I learned it.
The language barrier didn’t bother me much. All my friends spoke English, and if I went to the supermarket or the market, I explained with gestures. Soon I learned common phrases like “How much does it cost?” and counted to ten.
In Egypt I always ate rice. In general, although the cuisine is different, there is much in common. Baked chicken, cabbage rolls (though with rice instead of meat), meatballs, barbecue, shawarma. There were no problems with food. True, I didn’t like anything particularly from the dishes so much that I could cook it at home later. For me, only borscht is indispensable.
Because of the whiteness of my skin, it was much easier for me to find a job, and I was generally treated well. But more than once it happened that I was walking down the street, and although my knees and shoulders were covered, shoes without heels, men looked at me expressively, beeping a couple of times
Once I was brought to tears: I was walking home from work, and next to a car was driving me all this time, and the driver was staring at me from the window. It lasted about 15 minutes. And this man looks and looks, I already see how his saliva is flowing, and I already burst into tears. There was another such case: I was walking with a friend, and a passer-by hit me on the pope. I already hastened. But these are exceptions: usually people are good, no one shows a finger.
Egyptian women and stereotypes
The people here are very friendly, especially the men. I somehow managed to make more friends among the local boys rather than the girls. And this is not because women are constantly sitting at home – this is a well-known stereotype that does not correspond to reality.
The girls have their own companies, they get together and hang out, but I couldn’t make friends with them, because I don’t understand their jokes, I don’t understand their conversations. They have a different mentality, different habits. For example, they constantly take selfies with some cute filters, I don’t like it.
I think it’s silly, it’s easier for me to talk to guys about something interesting: politics, travel, something else. I had the experience of living with Egyptian girls in the same apartment, I didn’t really like it. They are a bit dirty and noisy.
By the way, among my acquaintances, more and more girls appear on the street with bare heads. It’s not because they’re not religious, they just want to be modern. A lot of girls and women work, only those who are strictly forbidden by their husbands to go to work stay at home
Egyptians spend their free time in different ways, just like us. Young people like to gather in companies and walk around shopping centers, look at windows, go to McDonald’s to eat, something like that. Usually girls separately, guys separately.
Older women, as a rule, spend time at home: they go about their business and call various relatives, more often sisters, and tell in detail how their day went. As for men, it is more difficult to say: I almost did not communicate with them. Judging by the parents of my friends, the men who stay at home either watch TV, or sleep, or play games on the phone.
Hot-blooded
I haven’t experienced polygamy personally, but I’ve heard stories from my friends. In resort places it often happens like this: the first wife is an Egyptian, and the second is a foreigner. The girls came on vacation, fell in love and got married. However, if a man really wants to marry a second girl, he must get permission from his first wife. And many give it: if the wife from her husband only needs him to provide a house, bring money and provide for the child, why not give him the go-ahead for a second marriage. Wives should be kept in the same conditions: everyone should buy them the same way, pay equal attention, and so on.
I had a colleague who was, shall we say, the unofficial wife of an Egyptian. She knew that he was married, that he had more than one child. The wife did not give consent to a second marriage, but he and a colleague lived together anyway. This was, of course, a violation of religious laws. If the police found out that a foreign woman lives with an Egyptian, and they are not married, they could even put her in jail. Nevertheless, they lived like this for more than one year. The wife even came to her house to swear. A colleague said that she was generally inadequate, she could threaten her husband with a gun at home. So he kind of started looking for mistresses.
Of course, they have hot blood there, temperament, we don’t understand that. In our country, women go to men with a maximum of stools or pans in their hands. But listening to the stories of a colleague, of course, was very interesting, their passions boiled there every day
Girls and boys, according to the rules, should walk together before marriage only after the engagement: parents must definitely get to know each other and give good, only then can you start dating. But, of course, this is not always the case. And the couple secretly go to watch movies together, and run on dates.
If you, a woman, are at home alone and a man comes to you – some kind of plumber or a friend of your husband – you cannot let him in. In extreme cases, you must leave the front door open so that later your husband or neighbors cannot accuse you of something obscene.
An unmarried couple of Egyptians will never be accommodated here in one room in a hotel, and they will also make sure that the guy does not run to the girl or vice versa. Spending time in the same room will be allowed only with the door open. The same principle applies if the guy is an Egyptian and the girl is a foreigner, and vice versa. If you are both foreigners, then do what you want.
Families here usually have about two or three children. There are divorces in the country, I myself knew such families. Usually, if the wife does not approve the second wife, the men get divorced and go to their mistresses. Men, of course, find a new family much easier. Women usually stay with the child, in which case it is almost impossible to remarry. Still, a Muslim country, for men it is very important here that the bride be a virgin.
Cold winters
Cairo is pretty dirty. People very often throw garbage at their feet, not reaching the bin. This is not surprising: there are very few urns. The city has a special area with dumps – Scavenger City. I have never been there, I was told that it is very dangerous there. Some residents of this area work as scavengers: they travel all over the city, collect garbage and bring it to themselves. Others sort it, others recycle it. There is no waste sorting in other parts of the city. True, if you bought cola in a glass bottle, then you need to return the bottle to the store, and it will be transferred to the factory.

It is usually very hot here, which is expected, but in January I was terribly cold. It was about ten degrees above zero, but the houses most often have no heating, so it’s terribly cold. In addition to air conditioners that can be put on a warm mode, there is nothing. It was colder inside the house than outside.
In Egypt, I really missed the celebration of the New Year. It is not customary for them to put up a Christmas tree, to create a festive atmosphere, for them December 31 is an ordinary day. Christmas, of course, is also not celebrated, like Easter. Their most important religious event, of course, is Ramadan – they really do not eat or drink before sunset and after sunrise. It didn’t fit in my head: you walk down the street during the day and you understand that all these people around endure, abstain for the sake of religion. I didn’t fast myself, but I tried to drink water at this time so that no one would see me.
Return to Russia and a new move
I still couldn’t live in Egypt and returned to Russia two years later. Tired of the mentality, of constantly having to cover my shoulders and knees, that I couldn’t communicate freely with my male friends. It was impossible to go to the cinema, everyone immediately began to think that we were dating or sleeping.
However, I do not regret my time in Egypt. I learned a lot there and grew up there. I don’t want to go back for sure, but I would go on vacation. Only not to Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh, but, for example, to Luxor.
