Oklahoma terrorist will serve time for each dead – Newspaper Kommersant No. 146 (2985) dated 11.08.2004

827

3 min.

nine0003

The trial of Terry Nichols, one of the two masterminds of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, ended yesterday in McAllister, Oklahoma. The jury doubted his guilt, and therefore the court sentenced the terrorist not to death, but to 161 life sentences.
After the trial ended yesterday, Terry Nichols will go down in history as the most mass murderer in US history. He was found guilty of 161 murders – until now, the American court, if there are a lot of victims of the criminal, singled out one or more in order to speed up the process and it was on their basis that they passed the sentence. Terry Nichols decided to remember everything. nine0005
He is accused of one of the most high-profile crimes in modern American history and the largest terrorist attack before September 11, 2001 – the Oklahoma City bombing. On April 19, 1995, an explosive truck parked outside the Alfred Murray government building killed 168 people and injured about 800 others. The bombed-out building housed the Oklahoma offices of all the country’s federal agencies, from the FBI to the US Postal Service. There was also a kindergarten for the children of government officials, the explosion killed 19children.
The terrorist attack in Oklahoma City shocked the whole of America. Panic broke out, Islamic terrorists were blamed for the incident, several Muslim organizations claimed responsibility for what happened, a few hours later three people from the Middle East were arrested in Dallas and Oklahoma City: brothers Assad and Anusarkhanan Siddikov and Mohammed Chafih. A few more hours later, they were released because another suspect was captured not far from the site of the explosion. He was driving in an unregistered car with an unregistered gun in the front seat and a mountain of far-right anti-government literature in the back. The detainee was dressed in a T-shirt with a portrait of Abraham Lincoln and the phrase that his killer Booth shouted out: “Death to tyrants!” On the back was written a quote from Thomas Jefferson: “The tree of freedom must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” In a word, all these details fit the image of a terrorist even more than an Arab origin. The arrested man’s name was Timothy McVeigh. Soon his friend Terry Nichols was taken to Kansas. nine0005
Despite the fact that the investigating authorities immediately identified the perpetrator, the further investigation of the terrorist attack was very confused. The FBI continually lost the necessary documents, could not determine the motives for the crime, although the arrested willingly confessed to anything. By 1997, when the trial began, it was announced that the terrorist attack, former veterans of “Desert Storm”, who became militant and extremely religious racists, was taking revenge on the government for the massacre of the ideologically close sect “Branch of David” to them. March 19For 93 years, the FBI tried to search the headquarters of the sect in the Texas town of Waco, suspecting that it contained a powerful weapons cache. Right-wing sectarians resisted, and when the assault began, a fire broke out in the building. The fire killed 80 people, including children. The authorities talked about self-immolation, and the terrorists McVeigh, Nichols and their associates were sure that the feds deliberately burned their brethren. In retaliation, they were going to kill one of the participants in the assault, or rather the head of the FBI and the Minister of Justice. Why they did not fulfill their plans, they did not explain to the court. They poured out all their anger on Oklahoma. nine0005
Timothy McVeigh readily admitted his guilt. In 1997, he was sentenced to death and dropped his appeal, saying he was satisfied with the verdict. Terry Nichols, on the contrary, claimed that at the time of the explosion he was sitting at his home in Kansas, and blamed Timothy McVeigh. As a result, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision in his case – and under the laws of the state of Oklahoma, the death penalty is excluded in this case.
Timothy McVeigh was executed on June 11, 2001, exactly three months before America’s most famous terrorist attack. And his partner Terry Nichols could theoretically apply for early release in 2008. In order not to let him go free, the prosecutor’s office decided to convict him again. The fact is that at the first trial he was found guilty only of the murder of eight FBI agents who died during the terrorist attack. The renewed process considered his guilt in the death of another 160 victims (later their number increased to 161 – it turned out that one of the dead was pregnant). nine0005
At yesterday’s meeting before sentencing, Terry Nichols, for the first time in the process, delivered a speech addressed to the relatives of the dead and injured, asking for their forgiveness. According to him, “God was in charge of this process from the very first day. And it was God who made it so that some jurors refused to vote for the death penalty.”
According to the decision of Judge Taylor, Terry Nichols will not be executed, but he must spend 161 life sentences in prison – the number of victims of the terrorist attack. In addition, he was also sentenced to 10 years in prison and $5,000 for conspiracy and 35 years and a fine of $25,000 for arson. Terry Nichols also has to pay $15 million in compensation to the victims. The verdict specifically states that Terry Nichols is not eligible for parole and must serve all terms consecutively. nine0005
