Some time ago, after winning a green card, I decided to move and try myself in the USA. Since before that I worked mainly in financial services and I didn’t have much acquaintances in the USA, the choice fell on New York.

Before moving, I had 15 years of experience behind me, of which five years as a programmer, ten years of management experience in IT. In recent years, I have managed several small fintech companies and also worked on several World Bank projects in the Caucasus, West Africa and Central Asia. nine0004

Whom to work?

The first challenge – how to make a resume perfect

My resume is a six-second chance for a recruiter to like it, which is the average amount of time they spend reading it. But does my resume ever get to recruiters? To figure out which format is best, I:

The content was more difficult:

  • The biggest problem was that I had no American experience and my last job was in Spain. After ten days, the flow decreased and became stable – five offers a day. It took a lot of time to answer, but it turned out to be useful, since I honed my answers to complete automatism, it raised my motivation and brought me some real interviews.

Strategy two: cold emails

Strategy Five: Lure Recruiters on LinkedIn

LinkedIn has a feature to show recruiters that you are looking for a job. I have enabled this feature and indicated the places where and by whom I want to work. In the beginning, there were very few requests, most of which were irrelevant. How I fixed it:

  • Removed coding skills from the skills, where I had a lot of ratings, which, when searching, led me to the wrong recruiters.
  • I looked at what skills are indicated in the vacancies that interest me, added them and asked my friends to rate me on them. nine0107
  • Added two of my relevant certificates to my last name.

There are three fields in total where information is written for which they are looking for and which is your brand – there are many articles about “about” and “headline”, but there are quite a few articles about the third field “note for recruiters” in “career interests” information.

Third challenge – how to increase your circle (networking)

According to statistics, 80% of all positions in the US are filled through dating. For myself, I divide the whole practice of networking into three parts: getting to know each other, maintaining relationships, and improving my own communication skills.

I had several sources for the constant growth of contacts:

  • Acquaintances of acquaintances and their acquaintances. I systematically tried to increase the circle and participate in all sorts of events, which I really liked even without networking. Mostly, many people responded positively, especially from the Armenian and Georgian communities, where people tried to help somehow without any special requests from me.

  • I try to communicate wherever possible – in social networks, at parties, on the beach, in the store. You never know what a simple hilarious line might turn into. nine0107
  • I also sometimes worked in co-working spaces in the GetCroissant network, expecting that there would be interesting acquaintances. But during the time that I spent in them, I did not see anyone talking to each other in the coworking space. The exceptions are happy hours, when on Fridays people sometimes drink and have fun.

  • As I speak – accent and grammar.
  • Non-verbalics – body language.

Without thinking for a long time, I decided to start working on all the points. In terms of content, I decided to mirror the interlocutor more, not to touch on more personal topics than those that the interlocutor touched on. If he is talking about the weather, then you should not ask about work, if we are already talking about business, then I myself should not jump to where he lives and how he works. As if he allowed the interlocutor to mature himself and, if trust exists, to be the first to open up. nine0004

Hired an accent therapist via Skype to improve the way I speak. We called up once or twice a week for an hour. The session cost $40, after seven or eight sessions she herself told me that this was enough. After that, they stopped asking me in the first minutes of the conversation where I was from. Interview

In a few months I was invited to the following interviews:

  • Three startup interviews, one made an appointment and never showed up or wrote anything. The interviews took place online. It is interesting that there was not a single standard question with startups, even the most banal – tell us about yourself. From the first second there were questions like: “How did you do the engineering of predictors” or “How did you estimate the task size when planning a sprint in project X”. nine0107
  • Several rounds of JetBlue interviews I got through Monster recruiters. The last round was live. I visited their open plan office and didn’t see a single American there. I think the salaries there were also gloomy. As a result, they asked me practically nothing there, they talked more, sometimes leaving me no opportunity to insert a word.
  • Paypal – my friend made me a reference there. After the screening call, I was interviewed online by three managers in succession for two hours. There were a lot of behavioral and situational questions. As a result, due to the holiday period, the process slowed down, and at this time I agreed to another offer, so the process remained unfinished. nine0107
  • In one branch of an Israeli company, after several online interviews, I was invited to the office, where I was offered to change the process in their admin panel, reconfigure the system, and then opened Excel with seven tasks for its deep understanding (sometimes the work does not always correspond to the title of the position). After that, they still called me for an interview with a programmer, where I would have to demonstrate knowledge of SQL, but I already had an offer much cooler, and I refused.   • I had a funny experience with a university software company. We agreed to an online interview at 6:00, and I finished the previous meeting on Google at 5:55. I jumped out of Google looking for a quiet place and popped into Chelsea Market. In the end, I found a space between the store and the street, a small corridor with tight glass doors where no one passed. I started a video interview, and suddenly a terrible downpour poured down, and people began to run into this space, escaping from the rain. And here I am standing in the corner with headphones on, with the camera turned on, on a crowded 10 m² and answering standard questions.
