ENG
Ángela de Hoyos was born in Coahuila, Mexico, on January 24th, 1924, the second youngest of five boys and four girls, and moved to San Antonio with her family in the late 1920s.
Angela’s first influences in the world of the arts were her mother, a talented painter, and her maternal grandfather, Amado de Hoyos, who loved to improvise satirical witty four-liners. Outside her family, De Hoyos was deeply influenced by the works of Emily Dickinson, Carl Sandburg, Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams, Boris Pasternak, William Blake and Walt Whitman. Among the Spanish-speaking poets, the most significant were Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Amado Nervo, Nicanor Parra, Rosario Castellanos, Federico García Lorca, Alfonsina Storni, and Jaime Sabines.
Her involvement in the Chicano Movement dates back to 1975, when she met Cecilio García Camarillo, publisher of Caracol Magazine, and he introduced her to Max Martínez of El Magazín and Ramón Vásquez y Sánchez of the Aztlán Cultural Arts Center newsletter. These three publications were crucial, providing the San Antonio Chicano community with a publishing venue for writers and artists who could not publish in mainstream periodicals and presses. De Hoyos, with the support of Moisés Sandoval, her husband of 55 years, eventually launched M&A Editions, Mandalinks.com and Huehuetitlán magazine. She also became a contributing editor for Caracol.
In speaking about her artistic voice and use language, De Hoyos explained to Milligan that her poetic voice was formed in English, given the predominance of English schools and the larger social environment. But she also noted that she spoke bilingually and code-switched with friends and family. However, in the 1970s, she realized that her bilingual speech patterns could not be documented, that is, written for publication. And so, it became almost “like a dare—something forbidden, poems which I kept in the closet—these hybrid children, deviants from an acceptable norm.” Then, with her involvement in the Chicano Movement, a “whole new world of possible [. . .] valid expression was opened”
Angela de Hoyos received many honors and accolades, including the titles of “grand dame of Chicano poetry” by her peers (including Raúl Salinas) and “A giant among us” (Rodolfo Anaya). She served on the Board of Translators, World Poetry Society Intercontinental (WPSI) from 1970 to 1976. She was the recipient of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Award (1992) and the Certificate of Distinguished Recognition from the National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies (1993). Her poems have been translated into English, Italian and Portuguese and published both nationally and internationally.
Although De Hoyos’ first publications were clearly concerned with the plight of Chicanos and demonstrate her outright anger and frustration with regard to the circumstances endured by Mexican Americans in the United States, I believe that this concern for the oppressed, voiceless, for humanity is ever-present in her all of her work. She is a poet with a social conscience whose poems are philosophically universal. By Dr. Gabriela Baeza Ventura.

What is the heart rate and what to do if yours does not match it
May 9, 2021LikbezZdorovye
When the heart beats faster than a certain value, the risk of premature death doubles.

From Latin, the word pulsus is translated as “blow”, “push”. Pulse All About Heart Rate (Pulse) is a measure of how many beats the heart makes in one minute. Sometimes another term is used – heart rate (HR).
Lifehacker found out everything about why you need to know your pulse and when its values can warn of danger.
Why measure the pulse
Pulse is an important parameter that allows you to assess the state of the cardiovascular system and the body as a whole. It shows whether your heart is able to fully provide the internal organs and tissues with oxygen and nutrients.
If your heart beats calmly, unhurriedly, pumping blood in even shocks, then your body feels great. If the heart rate rises, this indicates that the organs do not have enough nutrition and respiration, and the heart has to strain to provide them with blood. This condition is called tachycardia Heart arrhythmia – Symptoms and causes. Too rare a pulse, in turn, may be a sign that the heart is “tired” and cannot give the body the necessary amount of blood. In this case, we speak of bradycardia.
To assess which pulse is too fast and which is too slow, the concept of the norm is established. But, before moving on to it, you need to learn how to measure the heart rate. Lifehacker has already written about this.
Find out 🔥
- How to measure the pulse
What is the norm of the pulse
The norm has a fairly wide range. This is due to the individual characteristics of each person, his age, weight, height, physical fitness.
Normal resting heart rate is within the following limits Pulse:
9years
If your pulse is in the designated range, everything is in the order. (with some nuances, but about them a little lower). But if the heart rate goes beyond the upper or lower limit, this is a warning symptom.
Why the pulse can be lower or higher than normal
In itself, a temporary decrease or increase in heart rate is a normal phenomenon. A healthy heart does not beat like clockwork. It speeds up and slows down to meet the body’s changing need for oxygen.
Both tachycardia (heart rate faster than 100 beats per minute for an adult) and bradycardia (less than 60 beats per minute) can be completely natural physiological phenomena Dangerous Heart Rate. For example, the heart rate increases during sports. On the other hand, in active people accustomed to physical activity, the heart rate at rest is often reduced – sometimes up to 40 beats per minute. This is due to the fact that the heart muscle of athletes is also developed, it does not have to strain to maintain a steady rhythm.
There are other factors All About Heart Rate (Pulse) that can speed up or slow down the pulse:
- Air temperature. As temperature and humidity increase, the heart rate increases. But, as a rule, no more than 5-10 beats per minute.
- Change of body position. When you lie down, sit or stand, the pulse will be the same. But if you stand up, your heart rate may increase slightly in the first 15 to 20 seconds. Most often, it returns to normal within a couple of minutes.
- Anxiety or stress. Experiences make the heart pump blood more actively, so the heart rate “on the nerves” increases.
- Fever. As body temperature rises, the heart also increases activity.
- Bad habits. Excessive use of coffee and alcohol, love of cigarettes – all this speeds up the heart rate.
- Side effect of some drugs. Medicines can change the pulse in one direction or the other.
If your pulse speeds up or slows down for any of the above reasons, this is normal. As soon as you calm down, get rid of the fever or, for example, reduce your coffee intake, your heart rate will return to normal.
It’s much more dangerous if none of these factors are present, and your resting heart rate is regularly above or below normal.
What to do if the pulse is below or above normal
If you observe such situations constantly, consult a therapist.
This recommendation becomes mandatory if such fluctuations in heart rate are accompanied by weakness and dizziness.
Such symptoms may be a sign of cardiovascular disorders or other diseases – for example, anemia, hyper- or hypothyroidism, rheumatism, lupus.
When to call an ambulance
Dial 103 or 112 immediately if the pulse drops or rises above normal and this situation is accompanied by the following symptoms:
- difficulty breathing;
- dizziness, weakness, pre-syncope;
- chest pain that lasts longer than a few minutes.
Which pulse is considered ideal within the normal range and which is dangerous
Despite the fact that the upper limit of the normal pulse reaches 100 beats per minute, there are some nuances.
So, in one study Impact of changes in heart rate with age on all-cause death and cardiovascular events in 50-year-old men from the general population, covering middle-aged men (50 years and older), the following was found .
Men with a resting heart rate of 75 beats per minute or more were twice as likely to die prematurely from any cause than their peers with a lower heart rate.
In middle-aged women (after menopause) the situation is similar. Those whose heart rate exceeded 76 beats per minute at rest had Resting heart rate as a low tech predictor of coronary events in women: prospective cohort study. a 26% greater risk of having a heart attack than women with a heart rate of less than 62.
The established pattern allows us to draw some conclusions. In particular, the following: from youth it makes sense to work on ensuring that by the middle age the resting heart rate does not exceed 75-76 beats per minute. The best way is regular exercise, which will not only make your body more fit, but also your heart.
As a reminder: before you start exercising, consult a therapist. The doctor will find out if you have any contraindications, and will tell you what loads will be most effective in your particular case.

crazy doctor who lived with a corpse for 7 years
Another story that proves that sometimes reality is much more bizarre than fiction. Georg Karl Tanzler – Count von Cosel – was a German-born X-ray technician. He gained his notoriety thanks to a terrible obsession with a single girl – Elena Milagro de Hoyos. Even after the death of the girl, the Dancer could not part with her and until the end of his days was obsessed with the idea that one day Elena would be resurrected.

Do not self-medicate! In our articles, we collect the latest scientific data and the opinions of authoritative health experts. But remember: only a doctor can diagnose and prescribe treatment.
Georg Karl Tanzler was born in February 1877 in Dresden. We know little about the family in which he grew up, we only know that he had a brother and sister. He grew up as an inquisitive boy, his childhood as a whole was unremarkable with one single exception. Once he said that a dead relative appeared to him and showed the face of a dark-haired beautiful girl, promising that she would be his true love for life.
In his youth, Dancer liked to brag. For example, he claimed to have nine scientific degrees. Despite outright lies, Karl easily held various positions – largely due to his well-spoken tongue and self-confidence. He became a shipbuilding engineer, traveled a lot: Australia, India, Italy… While he was in Australia, the First World War began, he ended up in a concentration camp, and later could not return to Germany – he had to settle in the Netherlands, where he got a job in a hospital.
When Carl was in his forties, he married a woman named Doris Schafer. They had two daughters, but the marriage was far from ideal. Doris was not the girl from the dream.
Arrival in USA
In 1926 Dancer sailed to Cuba and later emigrated to the USA where he got a job as an X-ray technician. He got along with his colleagues, although everyone agreed on one thing: Dancer is arrogant and selfish. And very eccentric – which they turned a blind eye to, because he knew his job perfectly.
And 17 years earlier, in 1909, Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos Mesa was born in the USA. Elena was an incredibly beautiful girl: dark-eyed, with black hair… Fans did not let her pass. Among the Cuban-American community, early marriages were not uncommon, and at the age of 16, Elena married Luis Mesa. The marriage was unsuccessful. For unknown reasons, Elena had a miscarriage, and Louis left his young wife and left for Miami.
Elena became seriously ill, and in 1930 her mother took her daughter to the hospital for examination. Elena was only 20 years old, but the diagnosis was disappointing – “tuberculosis”. For that time, this was not even a diagnosis, but a sentence. It was in the hospital, under extremely tragic circumstances, that the Dancer met Elena. And then he remembered his vision – a dead relative who showed him the one that supposedly should become his fate. The dancer was sure that Elena was the girl from the dream. So, he simply has to save her from death.
Elena and death
I must say that the Dancer showed amazing zeal: he not only tried to treat Elena with potions and elixirs of his own preparation, but also, without the permission of his superiors, took an expensive X-ray machine out of the clinic and installed it in the Hoyos house. He showered Elena with gifts and shared his feelings, but love remained unrequited. The Cuban did not reciprocate.
Despite Tanzler’s best efforts, Elena died in 1931. He insisted on paying all funeral expenses and even hired a funeral home to embalm Elena’s body. The dancer bought not just a coffin, but ordered an expensive stone mausoleum. The girl’s family, heartbroken, hoped only that after the funeral, the strange German would leave them alone and they would be able to live on.
The dancer was the only one who had the key to the mausoleum and regularly visited Elena’s corpse. For two years, the crazy doctor came to the girl’s body and did everything possible to keep it as long as possible. He reinforced the skeleton with a frame, covered the skin with plaster, covered the eyes with glass balls, put a wig on the girl’s head, and used formaldehyde and perfume to hide the smell. The dancer carefully pulled Elena out of the mausoleum and brought her home, where he laid her in his bed.
He lived with the body of his dead lover for seven years – disturbing rumors did not stop. Neighbors said that at night the Dancer dances around the room with a dead girl, and in his spare time he builds an airplane, on which he plans to go with Elena to the stratosphere. The turning point came when Elena’s sister visited the doctor. She saw her sister’s body and, horrified, informed the police.
Court
A whole crowd gathered for the trial of Karl Tanzler. The doctor was not going to apologize: he confirmed that he lives with Elena’s body, explaining this by the fact that he loves this girl and really builds a plane to fly far, far away with her. It is interesting that the statute of limitations for the accusation – and they accused him of desecrating the grave – had long expired, and the court had literally nothing on Dancer.
After the trial, the local funeral home decided not to waste time and showed everyone what the Cuban corpse had become for only $1. Only after this terrible show did the family manage to take the girl’s body and bury her so that no one else could disturb her.
