On March 23, the annual traditional “Meeting of Reindeer Herders, Hunters and Fishermen” was held in the village of Russkinskaya, Surgut District, which brought together more than a thousand guests not only from Yugra, but also from Yamal. The competitions were timed to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the Surgut region.

The day was sunny. From the very early morning, an exhibition-fair began to unfold noisily on Ozernaya Square. Original craftswomen brought souvenirs for sale, which are in incredible demand, especially among the guests of the holiday, among whom were foreigners – Finnish musicologists Jarkko Niemi, Pekka Huttu-Hiltunene and American amateur photographer Todd Prince. In addition, one could buy reindeer meat, fish and berries here. This part of the fair is in great demand among residents of nearby cities and towns. Such exhibitions-fairs are an excellent opportunity for additional income for the indigenous inhabitants of the camps.

Simultaneously with this action, nearby, on the lake, reindeer herders are preparing for the race. This time, a record number of participants entered the most spectacular competition – reindeer sled racing – more than 50 men and 30 women. The struggle was difficult, the reindeer herder needed not only to gather his courage himself, but also to prepare the deer, for whom the noise of the crowd is unnatural and causes stress, they become uncontrollable. As the reindeer herders themselves say, they prepare for these competitions for a very long time and carefully, go round the reindeer, and select the best reindeer from the herd to participate in the races.

Two teams each, harnessed by 3 or 4 deer, go to the start. The intensity of passions was at the limit, the audience could not habitually noisily cheer for the competitors. However, some of the reindeer teams kept turning at the start, frightened by the crowd of people who tried to be quiet. The start of such teams was postponed for some time, others were being prepared instead. Competitions in this type of competition lasted more than two hours. As a result, Alexander Lempin from Nizhnesortymsky village took the first place in the men’s reindeer sled race, and Zoya Ruskina from the village of Russkinskaya took the first place among women. They got the main prizes – two snowmobiles “Buran”. It should be noted that the main sponsor of the competition was the oil company Surgutneftegaz.

Then there was a race in national fur clothes, in which Komtin Leonid and Sopochina Violetta won, respectively, they received a chainsaw and a washing machine. In the following competitions – in jumping over sleds – Kechimov Valery could boast of a large number.

A separate competition for the most beautiful winter national clothes was held, here the craftswomen had no equal, each tried to stand out with something special in sewing winter clothes, whether it was malitsa, sakh or kitties. It was a pleasure to look at this unprecedented beauty. The competition was held in two nominations: “Traditional Art” and “Author’s Art”, there were especially many winners in the first nomination – these are Raisa Tevlina, Raisa Sergeeva, Lyudmila Pokacheva and others, in the second nomination Svetlana Multanova, Anisya Ruskina, Antonina and Alena Tevlina.

The festival was decorated with performances by amateur art groups of the Surgut region. The concert program began with a performance by the rural folklore ensemble “Vont ne” (“Forest Woman”).

On this day, the exhibition tents of the Center for National Crafts worked for the guests of the holiday, as well as excursions in the Museum of Nature and Man. A.P. Yadroshnikov.

THE START OF THE CENSUS IN RUSSIA’S HARD-TO-ACCESS REGIONS IS POSTPONED

Rosstat proposed to postpone the start of the All-Russian population census in remote and hard-to-reach areas of the country. The launch will be postponed to the second half of 2020.

The head of the Federal State Statistics Service, Pavel Malkov, addressed the Minister of Economic Development of Russia, Maxim Reshetnikov, with a corresponding proposal. The head of Rosstat noted that in the context of the existing increased risk of the spread of a viral infection, the start in early April creates additional risks for both residents of these areas and census workers. In addition, a number of regions have already announced the introduction of a self-isolation regime and restrictions on movement on their territory.

The main stage of the All-Russian Census is scheduled for October 2020. The earlier start of the census in some areas, where about 500 thousand people live, is due to difficult climatic conditions. The first regions in which the dates for the start of the census campaign will be shifted are the Yamalo-Nenets and Chukotka Autonomous Okrugs, the Magadan Region, and the Khabarovsk Territory.

The exact timing of the census in hard-to-reach areas will be determined later, together with the administrations of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation.

“We pay special attention to security issues,” said the head of the department, Pavel Malkov. “Today, the priority is the health and well-being of the people of Russia.”

The pandemic has already made adjustments to the activities of foreign statisticians – the timing of the 2020 round of population censuses in the United States, Brazil and Kyrgyzstan has been changed.

“The leadership of Rosstat is analyzing the current situation and various options for organizing and conducting the All-Russian Population Census so that it can be carried out as efficiently as possible and in the intended format,” says Pavel Malkov.

The All-Russian population census is scheduled for October 2020. This is the first census to be held with the widespread use of digital technologies. The main innovation of the upcoming census will be the possibility for Russian residents to independently fill out an electronic census form on the public services portal (gosuslugi.ru). Census takers will use tablets with special software when going around living quarters. It will also be possible to enroll at census tracts, including on the premises of the multifunctional centers for the provision of state and municipal services “My Documents”.
