All educators participate in professional learning opportunities throughout the year. Our educators are warm, caring, qualified professionals who are carefully chosen through a selection process designed to determine their ability to meet the needs of children. Individually, and within learning communities, educators review, discuss, share and reflect on topics that are relevant to providing quality care for children and effective support for families.  We value positive and responsive relationships with families. By engaging families in a meaningful way, this partnership ensures that we are able to focus on their child’s social, emotional, physical, creative and cognitive development in a holistic way.

When things are meant to be, the stars align and miracles unfold.  In taking the initiative towards this dream, I have attracted others who share the same vision.

We are now a TEAM…A team that shares the same philosophy.  Learning begins with relationships and blossoms with creativity.  We value relationships and individuality.  We are professionals.  We share a common passion for supporting nurturing and caring for children and seeing them reach their full potential.  Together with our individual strengths and enthusiastic personalities we bring our own creative incentives to our programs.

I am blessed to have such an absolutely incredible team of staff members.  The strength and personalities of the Educators at The Mulberry Bush is what initiated the success of our programs and is what sets us apart to this day.

The level of care, patience, compassion, creativity, and hard work that our staff members put into their jobs, shows the parents here each day that their children are being cared for by individuals who are truly meant to be in the field of childcare.

Please read our staff BIO’s  for  insight into the individual experience, personalities, and values of our Team Members.  Finding, screening, and training the right people to be responsible for the care of these little ones is something that I’ve taken very seriously.  Having said that , I am incredibly proud of my staff and feel honored to be working with them each and everyday.  It is an amazing feeling to walk through the center and see smiles, hear laughter, and witness incredible learning experiences that all come from the passion that goes into each one of our very important jobs.

My husband, Marc, and I have been married for over 24years.   We have two strong and independent children that fill our lives with joy everyday.  We worked together in cancer care for over 20 years until a family tragedy made me reconsider my career choice. I have been with the Mulberry Bush Child Care since 2008.  As an Early Childhood Educator and Family Child Care Provider my goal is to provide a safe and happy environment for each child that will stimulate the physical, intellectual, multicultural, social, and emotional growth at their own pace.  I offer loving care that focuses on each child as a unique and wonderful individual and in doing so, building self esteem and respect for others.  As a mentor I share my experience and knowledge with providers to help them with all aspects of the childcare profession.  My purpose is to improve and promote quality child care and better communication between parents and providers.  My incredible staff members help me tremendously in this endeavor.

Hello!  My name is Tara Heisler, I was born and raised in Halifax, N.S and  quickly discovered my passion for travel and discovering the beauty of  other cultures. When I finally moved to London, I worked as a gymnastics  coach and a ballet teacher for 6 years and quickly found my passion in  childhood education.

I  continued my education outside of my work, learning and understanding  basic ASL, child psychology, time management, parent communication and  the importance of documentation. With my experience within childcare and  the high standards I hold myself to, I decided to open a childcare center in China. Unfortunately, COVID hit and I quickly found my way back home. I saw this experience as a unique opportunity to grow and  inspire others to strive to be the best they can be.

The  most amazing thing to me is the bonds made within childcare, not only  with the children but with the families as well. I believe that our  Centre should not only be an extension of your home, but also a place  where you feel safe and secure. I look forward to our adventures  together!

My fiancé and I have been together for over 5 years and I have a beautiful, vibrant, and outgoing 7-year-old step-daughter. I have my BA in Sociology as well as my Early Childhood Education Diploma.   I am originally from Chatham Ontario where I had begun my journey as a RECE.  When I moved to London in 2017, I worked as a full time RECE in both the preschool and the toddler rooms.  Altogether I have almost 10 years experience in the classroom!  I am a committed, enthusiastic, loving, and reliable educator.  I believe that children are kind, curious, and capable by nature.  I am well versed in the How Does Learning Happen Document and enjoy putting it into practice in our programs.  I am very excited to learn and grow along side the children, staff, and families here while I continue to cultivate my skills as a director. Mulberry Bush is a big loving family that I am proud to be a part of!

Mulberry – planting and tree care for the lazy

What you need to know about mulberry

Mulberry (or mulberry tree) is a powerful, long-lived deciduous plant. Depending on the conditions and variety, it can grow and, most importantly, bear fruit for up to 300 years!

The tree is predominantly dioecious; male flowers develop on one mulberry tree, female flowers on the other. Therefore, such varieties must be planted in heterosexual pairs (or several females per male). But there are also monoecious varieties, i.e. containing flowers of both sexes on the same tree.

Which variety to choose

As fruit plants, three main types are cultivated mainly – white, black and red. Based on them, new varieties are developed, including more frost-resistant and productive ones. Consider some of them:

  1. Black Prince. Medium-sized tree (up to 10 m) with a wide crown. A distinctive feature is large, fragrant black berries. The yield of one tree can reach 100 kg. The variety is winter-hardy – able to tolerate up to minus 30 degrees. The plant is dioecious, so a pollinator is required.
  2. White honey. A low tree with a wide pyramidal crown. The fruits are large, white with an amazing honey taste. The variety is productive and has high winter hardiness – down to -30°C. The ripening period is early – in June you can already enjoy berries.
  3. Pink princess. Low (up to 2-2.5 m) tree with a wide crown, very unpretentious and productive. From one bush you can collect up to 16 kg of dense, fragrant berries of pale pink color.

How to plant mulberries

The crown of a mature tree is spreading and tends to thicken. Therefore, the choice of landing site must be approached responsibly.

Place

The mulberry tree is sun-loving, so it is recommended to plant it on the south side and protect it from east and north winds and drafts. The distance between neighboring trees should be at least 5-6 meters for tall varieties, for short forms it can be reduced to 3-4 meters.

Soil

Almost any soil is suitable for growing mulberries. The tree grows best on light, fertile loam. Sandy and marshy soils with a high level of groundwater are least suitable.

If the land on your site is not suitable, the site must be prepared before planting. How to do it:

  1. A planting pit measuring 50-60 cm deep and 80-100 cm in diameter is filled with soil mixed with leaf soil, sand and humus.
  2. In addition to organic matter, mineral fertilizers can also be added: 50-70 g of superphosphate and 20-30 g of potassium sulfate. The main condition is that fertilizer granules do not touch the roots.
  3. A mulberry tree is planted in the prepared hole after two weeks. It is recommended to deepen the root collar by a couple of centimeters. The seedling is watered with 2 buckets of water and mulched with peat or compost.
  4. For the winter trees are recommended to be mulched with chopped straw, peat, fallen leaves.

Mulberry tree care

The main activities are reduced to periodic feeding, pruning and protection from diseases and pests.

Top dressing

Fertilizing a mulberry tree is not fundamentally different from other fruit trees. In the spring, by the time the buds open, fertilizers are applied with an emphasis on nitrogen. During flowering and pouring, the fruits are fed with complex compounds (for example, azofoska NPK 16:16:16). At the end of summer, for better maturation of wood, phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are applied and nitrogen is excluded. You can also pinch the tops of young mulberries to stop the growth of the tree.

Pruning

Pruning is needed, especially at a young age, because its crown tends to thicken. Formative pruning is done in the spring, before the start of sap flow. First of all, the affected and thickening crown branches are removed. And also the main shoots are shortened to stop growth upwards. Autumn pruning – sanitary. Weak, diseased and damaged shoots are removed.

Watering

Mulberry is considered a drought tolerant tree. And indeed it is. But in order for it to grow well and the fruits to pour and ripen well, additional moderate watering is necessary in dry weather. The plant does not like excessive moisture.

Disease and insect control

Mulberry trees are considered to be resistant to many types of pests and diseases. Nevertheless, the plant can be affected by fungal and bacterial diseases, as well as be attacked by pests typical for the area: the larva and adult of the May beetle, wireworm, spider mites and other pests.

If all activities are carried out correctly and on time, then already at the age of 4-6 years, the mulberry will delight the owner with delicious, fragrant fruits. You can find and purchase high-quality, healthy and winter-hardy mulberry seedlings in the Becker online store.

Perhaps there are few plants of such an ancient culture as mulberry. There are many varieties used in fruit growing and horticulture. Mulberries are also called mulberries or mulberries.

Mulberry – a tree 30 m high, with a broadly ovoid or tent-shaped crown. Mulberry is propagated by seeds, root shoots, layering and cuttings, and garden forms – by grafting. There are only about 10 species of mulberry in the genus.

White mulberry

White mulberry is native to the broad-leaved forests of China, from where the tree came to Europe.

Tree about 20 m tall, becoming a shrub in unsuitable conditions. The bark of the trunk is fissured, brown. The crown is spherical, dense, spreading in old trees. Young branches are gray-green, finely hairy, with pale reddish or light lenticels.

Its foliage is very interesting, of various configurations and sizes, from whole to lobed. The foliage is dark green in summer and yellow in autumn. Seed fruit are decorative – edible, sweet, of various colors, in appearance a bit reminiscent of blackberries or raspberries.

Mulberry tree is long-lived (lives about 300 years), grows fast, loves light, does not suffer from urban conditions. Handles pruning well. Frost-resistant. To soil conditions, white mulberry is unpretentious.

White mulberry is used in single plantings, to create beautiful hedges, in park construction.

White mulberry has decorative forms (more than 400), of which the most spectacular are:

pyramidal – with lobed leaves and narrow pyramidal crown;

spherical – a tree with a spherical crown;

dissected-leaved – very graceful, with leaves divided into narrow lobes;

Tatar – slow growing, undersized, with small, multi-lobed foliage;

golden – with golden young shoots.

Red mulberry

North America is considered to be the homeland.

A tree with brown bark and a hipped crown. The foliage of the red mulberry is large, rounded or ovate, long-pointed, changeable. Infructescences are large, 3 cm, cylindrical, red almost black, sweet and sour, juicy.

In terms of frost resistance, it surpasses the previous type. In culture, it is much less common than white.

Red mulberry has a decorative form: felt – with white foliage on the underside.

Black mulberry

Homeland is Afghanistan and Iran.

Tree with spreading crown. The foliage of black mulberry is large, broadly ovate, heart-shaped at the base, pointed at the top, solid, dark green. The foliage is rough above, soft-haired below. Black mulberry fruits are large, black, sweet-sour, juicy, tasty.

Can tolerate dry climate well, the tree is undemanding to soil conditions. More thermophilic than the previous species, it is used in the south of Russia.
