Hello,
I own an in home daycare called Ms. Mercer’s Mini Monsters Day Care in Elgin! I grew up in a home daycare and feel it created a unique opportunity. Home daycare is not babysitting. It’s not comparable to any child care center. It’s families in relationships with a professional care provider. Its an environment that by design becomes a second home where a bunch of people are coming together to care, trust, educate, and listen to each other. I truly believe that children are our future and when they are put into an environment that fosters creativity and growth they can do amazing things! We have two Yorkshire Terriers and a tortoise. My husband works as a union painter. I graduated high school in 2007 and then went on to study the IT field. I fell in love with the childcare field in high school working as one of the daycare teachers for child development class credit. Each child will be given 1-3 meals a day, depending on the hours they are in my care, and two snacks along with drinks. Each meal, snack and drink will be free of GMO’s and be of good nutritional value for a growing child. I will be familiarizing the children with sign language, Spanish and German. Children will begin to prepare for kindergarten by learning basic math and the alphabet. I will ensure the children learn appropriate ways to express their emotions and opinions. We will have crafts along with fun science experiments and projects. I will also be taking the children on field trips such as the nature center, Epic Air, Monkey Joe’s or library to broaden their horizons and keep them active. In the past we have gone to the Shed aquarium, Sesame street live and Ice skating. I have a zoo membership that will be used often for daycare outings. In summer we are in my huge backyard as much as possible. The backyard has a pool set up that we enjoy as much and as often as we can! We also have lots of cars, power wheels, a bubble machine! and a sand station. By taking no more than three children at a time I am able to give each child the care and attention they deserve. I know a child is a parent’s everything and promise to treat them with the care, respect and dedication that they need. From the second your child walks in my door I make sure that they become scientist, explorers, Feel respected, loved, and important, but most of all! know that they are the reason we are all here ,together, at daycare!

About Little Monsters Nursery
Little Monsters provides a professional, yet informal, home-from-home environment, in which children thrive and feel secure. We work very well in partnership with parents to ensure that home routines are closely mirrored; particularly vis–vis meal and sleep times (especially for babies and very young children).
Our caring and enthusiastic practitioners are well qualified and provide a happy, relaxed environment, in which wide and varied ranges of activities are tailored to suit each individuals needs (both child-initiated and adult-led).
Most of all, we provide an environment where the children enjoy their play both inside and outside and achieve their full potential, ready for starting school.
The nursery is housed within a renovated Victorian period property with a large single-storey extension, set around an inner courtyard. All children are cared for on ground level, and the entire building has excellent disabled / pushchair access.
The ground floor of the main house provides a lovely, homely space for our youngest children, which can be adapted to suit the needs of the children we have in at that time. We aim to make best use of the space by being flexible and sharing the space, ensuring that all childrens needs are met and they have the best experience possible.
The Toddler Room is also within the main house and can easily accommodate up to 12 x toddlers. It comprises a large open play room with sand & water play, a creative table and double-glazed French windows opening directly out to the garden for outdoor play. There is a role play corner and a quiet area with cushions for relaxing with books and stories and most of the toys are at ground floor level for easy access by the children. At sleep times, an area is separated off, and cot mattresses are laid out to provide plenty of space and a calm environment, conducive to taking a nap, while those not having a sleep have the opportunity to play in a different area.
The large dining kitchen within the house gives plenty of room for both the babies and toddlers to eat together and is also used for messy play activities throughout the day. There are 2 separate toilet / changing areas within the space, which can be utilised by either / both age groups.
The fact that the 2 age groups work so closely together makes the transition from Baby Room to Toddlers seamless and easy for both children, parents and practitioners and is often a gradual process as the child develops and is ready for the next step. Minimum ratios of 1:3 for under 2s and 1:4 for 2 year olds are maintained at all times.
The single storey extension attached to the main house caters for all of the older children in 2 separate areas. Both rooms are organised in a similar way and we aim to again provide seamless transition between the groups.
Tweenies is the smaller of the 2 areas and caters for up to 16 x 2 to 3 year olds at any one time. There is a hard floor area for messy play and mealtimes and a larger, carpeted area for general play. This is zoned to cover all the different areas of learning and development. The large playroom has easy access to toys, writing materials and other resources, a sand and water play table, painting easel, etc.
A double-glazed door opens directly onto the inner courtyard, where the children can enjoy many outdoor activities in a safe, enclosed space at any time. (The children also use the front garden at various times throughout the day, where there is more room to run and stretch their legs.)
An archway leads from the main playroom to the quiet and creative area, where the children can enjoy stories, reading and more writing and colouring activities, as well as circle time. There are also toilets and changing facilities adjacent to this room that are freely accessible to the children at all times and a small kitchen area for preparing snacks and drinks (not accessible to the children).
Pre School caters for children from around 3 in a deceptively large and spacious playroom, with zones such as construction, music, role-play, small world, technology and, of course a quiet area for reading / stories and generally relaxing. We can have up to 24 children in this room. There is always a writing table, for the children to practise their emergent writing and mark making skills and an easel for painting. Sand and water play are also always available for the children to access whenever they want to.
From the time that the children move into Pre School, we are preparing them for school, by focussing on the skills they will need to make that successful transition. For example, the activities are gradually more challenging and we ask more in depth questions of the children. We also help them to develop their listening, negotiating & reasoning skills, as well as ensuring that can focus and concentrate for longer periods of time.
We continue to develop their understanding of the 4 core British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, with boundaries, discussion and role modelling good behaviour.
For some of the day, we aim to have a free-flow system in operation for indoor / outdoor play, which means that the children can come and go between the playroom and the front garden as and when they want to.
There is a sizeable hard floor area, which is used for messy play and mealtimes and a separate bathroom, to which the children have access at all times.
The Main Kitchen is located behind the Pre School playroom and this is where our dedicated nursery cook prepares and cooks all the meals and snacks from fresh for all children aged 1 and above (see page on food & nutrition).
Outdoor Play Spaces
Little Monsters has several outdoor areas and the children really enjoy using them at all times and all year round. They especially love playing outside in the evenings, when it is dark! We believe that outdoor play is a vital part of a childs day and it is actively encouraged at all ages and stages of development. During the warmer months, we use portable gazebos to provide shade for the children, whilst during the winter months, we have outside lighting to enable day-long, year-round outdoor play.
The main front garden is enclosed behind metal railings, set back from the property boundary and includes both lawn and paved areas. It has been extended and raised beds / borders installed for the children to have a go at growing their own fruit, vegetables and flowers and gardening has proved to be a very popular activity, with all ages taking part. There is a variety of play equipment, including a climbing frame, picnic table, slides, a sand pit, easel and a playhouse, as well as a good selection of ride-on toys, trikes and cars. The children also enjoy playground and parachute games in this lovely, open space.
The smaller front garden is also enclosed behind metal railings in front of the main house and is mainly grass. This is predominantly used by the Babies and Toddlers, as it has direct access from the house, and is quite well shaded, making it perfect for all-day long play. There is a gate between the 2 front gardens, providing flexibility for the younger children to be separate from the older ones, or to enable them to join in together.
The courtyard has a soft rubber surface and, again has a good variety of resources, including ride-on toys, a playhouse, a sand pit, easel and workbench, etc. It has the added bonus of being completely enclosed, so the children feel totally safe and secure. There are also planters for the children to grow and nurture more fruit and vegetables.
For a change of scene, we also take the children (with parental permission) for short walks off the premises. We either turn right out of nursery and make our way to the grassed public play area to enjoy the larger equipment (swings, slides and seesaws) just a short walk away or we had left towards the village to see if we can see any animals or even to collect eggs or ice cream from the vending machines at the farm!
Babies (3 months to approx 18-20 months)
Our objective is to make the transition from home to nursery as smooth as possible for both babies and parents. We know from our own experience how hard it can be to leave your baby, so we try to mirror the home environment as far as we possibly can, particularly with regard to sleeping and feeding patterns. As the child settles in, grows and develops, we gradually help to establish their routine, in preparation for moving up to the Toddler Room around 18-20 months.
We encourage regular dialogue with parents, ensuring that we make time both at the beginning of the session (when you hand your child over to us) and at the end (when you collect your child). We listen to what parents / carers have to tell us about changes to routines, or developmental progress since the child was last in nursery and we, in turn, provide feedback to parents about what the child has been doing during the day, including any achievements or milestones the child has made whilst at nursery.
We provide a written record for parents to take home, which provides information on how much the child has eaten / drank at each meal / snack time, nappy changes and sleep times, as well as what they have been doing and how they have been during the day. If we have any concerns about your child during the day, we will contact you immediately. Likewise, parents are welcome to phone the nursery at any time to check on their child.
The priority in the Baby Room is close individual and personal attention. We give the babies & children lots of cuddles, along with constant stimulation through talking and playing with them, listening and joining in with music and songs, in a happy and relaxed atmosphere. This goes hand-in-hand with our key person system, which provides parents with a dedicated practitioner, who will be their first point of contact in the nursery.
The activities in the Baby Room are very diverse; from the very energetic action songs, ball pools, dancing and workouts via lots of hands-on messy play games (paint, gloop, jelly, water, sand, pasta, shaving foam, etc) to quieter times for stories, crayoning and relaxing. There is a mix of adult-focussed and child led activities throughout the day and the toys are regularly rotated (and sterilised!). All babies / children are encouraged to participate and activities are adapted to suit each individuals needs and age / stage of development.
We ask parents to provide food for the youngest babies, but we offer the option of us providing all meals, snacks & drinks from the age of 1 year old.
The childrens learning is also reinforced through our many fun theme days, from wear a specific colour day and teddy bears picnics to fancy dress parties and fundraising for charities such as Barnardos and Children in Need.
Toddlers (approx 18/20 months to 30/32 months)
The routine in the Toddler Room is slightly more structured than in the Baby Room, as most children respond well to routine because it empowers them to be confident and aware of the world around them.
One of the main aims of the Toddler Room is to develop the childrens personal, social and emotional skills, together with their speech and communication skills. We encourage development in these areas by showing the children how to share and take turns with other children. Using positive role modelling, we support the children while they learn how to establish relationships with peers and adults and develop social skills, such as good table manners and personal hygiene routines. We work very much with a learning through play ethos, where the children have a big input and a great deal of choice of the activities they undertake. There are always lots of singing, music and fun activities for the children to enjoy – both indoors and outside in one of the 3 outdoor play areas.
Throughout the day, there are times when the children are in larger groups and times when they are in small groups or enjoying 1:1 time with their key person or other practitioner. For example, during registration time, children will chat with practitioners about what they have been doing at home, the days of the week, weather, sing the welcome song and listen to short stories. Story time, singing, outdoor play, mealtimes and brain gyms are times when all of the children join together.
We continue the observation & planning process started in the Baby Room, whereby the practitioners observe the children at play, assess what they need to move their development forward and then plan activities to inspire the children to take these next steps along their developmental journey, using the childrens individual interests as the basis for selecting the activities.
Potty / toilet training is undertaken in partnership with parents, as and when the child is ready whether in the Baby / Toddler Room, Tweenies or Pre School. Our practitioners will support parents and children during this (sometimes difficult!) time, concentrating on progress and rewarding achievements.
Little Monsters was chosen to be involved in a pilot scheme, known as The Unique Toddler Project, which underlines our commitment to continuing to promote best practice within the Toddler age group and provide the best, most tailored experience for our toddlers in the setting.
Tweenies (aged approx 30/32 months to approx 42 months)
Just as the Toddler Room has more structure than the Baby Room, the Tweenies room is another stepping-stone on the journey towards school. We place more emphasis on developing childrens independence and preparing them for life in school, without moving away from our ethos of making learning fun and learning through play.
For children moving up from Toddlers, we start the transition process when we feel they are ready for the next step. They will be taken (if possible by their key person) into Tweenies to play for an hour or so, then over a mealtime, or for a sleep, so that they gradually build up to a full day.
The children participate in self-registration, learning to recognise first their first names, then their surnames too. At circle time (both in the morning and afternoon), we look at the days weather and talk about the day, date, month, season, etc. The children are actively encouraged to share experiences from home or tell stories. .
Potty / toilet training is undertaken in partnership with parents, as and when the child is ready. Our practitioners will support parents and children during this (sometimes difficult!) time. There is no requirement for a child to be toilet trained before moving to the next room.
The children in Tweenies also put on an annual Christmas production for parents & family members, which is great fun!
Pre School (aged approx 42 months and over)
The Pre School is for children from around 3 years to school age (and beyond in the out of school club). As with the transition from Toddlers to Tweenies, children move up when we feel they are ready for more structure and the Pre School environment.
Childrens learning is planned, delivered and evaluated to ensure that they receive broad based experiences and knowledge to help them prepare for the transition from nursery to primary school. The children are observed and assessed to ensure that their experiences build on the skills and knowledge that each child already possesses. These observations are used to inform planning and ensure that the children are empowered to reach the next step on their individual ladder towards the early learning goals.
We continue to encourage and support the childrens development in both the 3 prime and 4 specific areas of learning and development by providing a wide variety of resources and activities to help them play and explore both individually and in groups. There is a greater emphasis on emergent writing skills, letter, number & colour recognition, and early numeracy and literacy skills.
They play word games, where they are shown individual letters of the alphabet and name objects that start with the same letter just some of the skills that will help them when they start to learn to read. We work with the Letters and Sounds framework throughout the day to help the children develop their language skills.
The children use maths to count children and compare whether there are more boys than girls, sort themselves into groups by the colour of their clothes, etc. This type of activity – whilst being fun for the children – also helps develop mathematical concepts and language in a fun way.
We do have some ICT toys and equipment, but this is not the main focus of the childrens learning. We prefer to encourage them to communicate with each other to learn to read body language, to use their own imagination and natural curiosity and develop fine and gross motor skills by practising them in lots of different situations. We provide lots of opportunities for the children to be creative and think critically, providing a wide range of resources for them to access at will. We encourage the children to sit with books and build towers, rather than spend time in front of a computer screen.
As in all rooms, the Pre School children have a big input on the choice of activities and toys and we are currently working towards a free-flow system, where the children can make full use of both the large front garden, courtyard and the spacious playrooms, coming and going as they want to.
As with Tweenies, the children also put on an annual Christmas production for parents & family members, which is great fun!!
There is no requirement for children to be toilet trained before joining Pre School, although this is very much encouraged.
Of the 24 places in Pre School, up to 6 will be offered as split places.
The 5-10 year old school pupils use the places from 8.00 am to 8.40 am and 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm. The 35 year old nursery children from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm during term time. These short day places continue through the school holidays and can be utilised by those doing short days during term-time or 5-8 year olds. Similarly, children aged 5-8 years can also attend for half or full days on a regular or ad-hoc basis, to suit parents needs.
Out of School Club
We run a small out of school club, with drop offs to and collections from The Mosley Academy in Anslow. Holiday club places are also available to children from any school subject to availability.
Before School, depending upon their arrival time, the children usually play with the younger children or do some drawing or colouring until 8.30am when they are taken to school. After school, there is usually more time, so the children have their tea and are then given choices as to what they want to do and where they want to do it (in or outside). The children are involved in planning activities and designing their own greetings cards, eg at Christmas / Easter time, etc. There is also the opportunity for children to read to members of staff and / or complete any homework tasks, so they have more time to relax at home.
As the after school club is predominantly aimed at siblings of nursery children, they often wish to join in with their younger brothers / sisters. The aim is to give the older children time to relax after a day at school, with the opportunity to do their homework before they go home if they want to. It is a very relaxed environment and the after school children are involved in planning their own activities, or choosing what to do spontaneously.
Wherever possible, the journeys to & from school are made on foot with two members of staff. In inclement weather (or when we know the children will have lots to carry), we will use the nursery vehicle (currently a Renault Traffic 9 seater) to transport the children to and from school. We just ask that parents remember to ensure their children have suitable coats / hats for the weather!
During the holidays, children have the choice of joining in with the younger (preschool) children or doing their own activities.

My two-year-old son, Otis, stuffs his curly hair into his train conductor’s hat and turns up the volume on Otis Redding’s “Knock on Wood.” Spinning in circles and flailing his arms in our Somerville kitchen, he grooves to his namesake next to a bassinet holding his new baby brother, Tucker. “It’s like thunder, lightnin’, the way you love me’s fright’nin’…” and before the chorus is finished, Otis shimmies over to Tucker and gives him three hard slaps to the face.
For weeks, our toddler has been waging war against his younger brother here at home. Matchbox cars. Sippy cups. Cheddar Bunnies. They’ve suddenly all been turned into homing missiles aimed at Tucker’s noggin. Last night, Otis gave Tucker a leg-drop that would’ve made Hulk Hogan proud. At the same time, though, these seemingly random attacks alternate with gentle moments: night-night hugs and Eskimo kisses. That’s the Otis we raised—the boy we’ve spent nearly every day with for the entirety of his short life.
I’m not sure where this rowdy changeling version of Otis came from. All I know is that over the past two years, Otis has been home with my wife or me. Between careful schedule juggling and the help of a few generous family members and well-paid college students, we’ve been able to get enough “coverage.” Now that newborn Tucker is part of the family, we have more to cover, so we’ve had to seek cover ourselves. Recently, we enrolled Otis in dayca—er, school—three days a week. And that’s when all hell broke loose.
“He seems to be adjusting pretty well to daycare,” I tell my friends. “Aside, of course, from all the hitting.”
So what happened to the generous, sweet, patient Otis my wife and I know so well? Is he hiding in one of the pressboard cubbies at daycare? As the behavior persisted, and Tucker remained at risk of being a punching bag, we couldn’t help but wonder: Was daycare somehow making our child aggressive—even violent?
Turns out my wife and I are not the only ones asking that question. Spend time reading any family-focused message board online, and eventually, some panic-stricken parent will reveal that their bundle of joy has suddenly morphed into a raging bully after a stint in daycare. You’ll see threads with titles such as “What’s Wrong with My Little One?,” filled with scenes of biting, kicking, and toy throwing. You’ll read tales of woe, such as one despondent person on Reddit whose four-year-old son—“a happy little guy”—started roughing up his classmates: “Our son pushed another kid to the ground in the yard who subsequently hit something that caused a massive nosebleed.” On a recent trip to toddler yoga, in between downward dogs and cobras, Otis and I watched one kid stomp on his classmates like Godzilla. “Sorry,” his mother said with a sigh. “He just started daycare.” Sifting through all the stories, I can hardly tell whether daycare inspires more anxiety in children—or their parents.
In truth, there is plenty to be anxious about. Few things are more fundamentally nerve-wracking for parents than the thought of abandoning their child to a stranger—and recent dispatches on the state of American childcare do little to dispel such feelings. In 2006, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) opened the floodgates on working-parent paranoia with a study that seemed to suggest that preschool-age children who spent a year or more in daycare were slightly more prone to develop behavioral issues later on.
Media outlets across the country eagerly jumped on the story with headlines such as “Child Care Leads to More Behavior Problems,” “Poor Behavior Is Linked to Time in Day Care,” and even “Bad Mommies.” Skeptics blasted the study for its rather conservative message, but the findings were compelling: Even before the study was completed, Harvard education professor and fellow NICHD daycare researcher Kathy McCartney didn’t hold back when she publicly pronounced, “So far it is looking like [the study is] right.” Several years later, British psychologist Oliver James set off his own firestorm when he claimed, according to the Daily Mail, “a rapid increase in nursery places has led to a generation of violent ‘little savages. ’”
Controversial as it is, the idea that daycare might have a corrupting influence on youth is nothing new. Daycare as we know it was spawned by the Industrial Revolution of the early 20th century, when women started entering the workforce in unprecedented numbers. From the outset, people expressed dismay at these early “day nurseries” and the outsourcing of childcare, but acknowledged it was preferable to the far grimmer alternative: hordes of neglected urchins huddled in empty tenements or, worse, running wild in the streets. The pearl-clutching died down during World War II, when Rosie the Riveter set off for the factories and—to help encourage this home-front effort—Congress created a government-run system of universal childcare in place from 1943 until 1946. The next major spike in daycare came in the years following the beginning of the women’s movement: Between 1977 and 1993, enrollment of children in such centers increased from 13 to 30 percent. Today, according to the most recent U. S. Census, nonrelatives regularly care for one-third of children under age five.
Along with new attitudes toward childcare came new breakthroughs in developmental psychology, including attempts to understand the effects that parental separation has on children’s behavior. One researcher in particular—British psychologist John Bowlby—shook up the field with his pioneering work on what would come to be known as attachment theory, now a fundamental tenet of child psychology. In the late 1960s, his colleague Mary Ainsworth developed a lab protocol called “the Strange Situation” that forms the cornerstone of what we now know about the effects that daycare can have on a child’s mental state. For each 20-minute experiment, a parent brought their child into the laboratory. After several minutes, the parent left the room while the researcher stayed with the child. A short time later, the parent returned.

Daycare | Church Crookham | Fleet
After having my first son, I decided a career change and took over Little Monsters Day nursery in February 2009.
I felt passionate about creating a childcare setting where children felt loved, could grow, develop, and learn in a fun, safe and stimulating environment that feels like home.
Little Monsters in Crookham Village is set within the former post office, that has been transformed into a home away from home children’s day nursery.
We have a fantastic team of highly qualified, committed staff, providing high quality care for children between the ages of birth and 5 years of age. Staff ensure children’s social; personal and communication skills are developed via the nursery’s many fun activities and child-led play opportunities.
We offer places for children aged from 3 months to school leaving age. We offer full-time and part-time sessions.
All meals, snacks and wipes are included in the fees. We are able to accept Free Entitlement and Extended Hours funding provided by the Local Authority for two, three and four year olds – please ask us for the details. We can take all brands of Childcare Vouchers and Tax Free childcare payments.

Our unique programs incorporate a variety of educational theories, while always keeping the child’s best interest in mind and allowing for hands-on, experiential learning. Our Mission
Quality Child Care
We believe that children thrive in an environment which values their own uniqueness, while providing support and opportunities to grow emotionally, socially and creatively. By building on each child’s strengths, interests and curiosities, we guide each child to explore the world around them as well as develop new abilities and form close relationships.
Learning Through Play
Personal, Social & Emotional development
Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) ‘involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities’,
Communication & Language
Language is crucial to young children’s development; it is the essential key for learning, for communicating and building relationships with others as well as for enabling children to make sense of the world around them.
Physical Development
Young children learn through movement, so it is critical for them to have daily physical activity. It is important to provide children with opportunities for free movement, engage children in both planned and free indoor and outdoor motor play, and challenge children with appropriate fine and gross motor tasks, support children’s learning and healthy physical development.
Literacy
Literacy is most commonly understood as reading and writing. But before children can read and write, they need to learn about sounds, words, language, books and stories.
Mathematics
Mathematics (maths) is an important part of learning for all children in the early years and receiving a good grounding in maths is an essential life skill.
As well as numeracy, it helps skills such as problem solving, understanding and using shapes and measure and developing their own spatial awareness. It helps them to recognise, create and describe patterns, which is essential for early problem solving skills.
Introducing maths to children from an early age helps to develop their understanding of all elements of problem solving and reasoning in a broad range of contexts.
Understanding of the World
Understanding of the World is about how children get to know about other people, the place where they live and about all aspects of the environment.
Finding out about the world around them is what babies and young children do very effectively when they investigate by touching, holding or pressing things and by climbing on and jumping off things. Older children love to explore and investigate how and why things work and to test out their ideas of what will happen if they do a particular thing like pouring more and more water into a container.
Expressive Art & Design
Helping children to be creative is as much about encouraging attitudes of curiosity and questioning as about skills or techniques. Children notice everything and closely observe the most ordinary things that adults often take for granted. Building on children’s interests can lead to them creating amazing inventions or making marks on paper that represent for them an experience or something they have seen. Encouraging children to choose and use materials and resources in an open-ended way helps them to make choices and to have confidence in their own ideas.

ZAK MINI MONSTER: “My dream is to make an animation and a game”
Pringles held a press conference on March 29, during which, among other things, a unique new generation Xbox controller designed by artist ZAK MINI MONSTER found its owner. We seized the opportunity to meet with its author to ask a few questions about his work, his work on the controller and, of course, about himself.
Zach, let’s get to know you first – tell us how you decided to choose the path of creativity?
Hello, my name is Zakhar Evseev, my creative pseudonym is ZAK MINI MONSTER. My creative path began a long time ago: I have been drawing for more than twenty years. I started with graffiti, with classic street fonts. No one imagined that it could develop into something more. From the very beginning, my work was – and remains to this day – an occupation for the soul. I always liked to do this, I did and do it for myself, for the sake of energy, for the pleasure of the result. For many years my path was connected with classical graffiti, but at a certain stage, when in Russia they began to adopt the experience of the West and invite street artists to gallery stories, projects with brands, I realized that I needed to structure my art, take it to a new level and make emphasis on this. It was after understanding the situation that I left my official job and focused on developing my creativity, realizing and working on promoting my style. I started to earn a living doing this – which, in principle, I do now.
So you are now a professional artist?
Yes, I guess. Although in general this transition took place quite a long time ago, it’s just that once I combined creativity with everything else, and now I build my whole life on it. There were periods when I worked as a consultant in a store, and as a manager, and in sports complexes. Sports are very close to me, and I even participated in many competitions, but somewhere in 2012 or 2011 I realized that I need to end this story, because it distracts more than it helps. By shifting my focus to creativity, I got the opportunity to freely build a life and, in principle, feel freer.
By the way, where are you from?
I usually say from Siberia, because I was born in the city of Novokuznetsk, but almost immediately my family left for the Republic of Khakassia in the very small city of Sayanogorsk, where I lived for twenty years, and then moved to Krasnoyarsk, where I lived for another 12 -13 years old. After that, I already moved to Moscow, where I have been living for the last four years.
Did these moves affect you and your work?
In fact, each move was somehow connected with creativity. I moved from Sayanogorsk because I really wanted to paint on the walls, and in that city there were no like-minded people, no understanding of how to do it. In Krasnoyarsk, I met a more advanced artist, and he invited me to his place. At that time, we created the largest graffiti festival in Russia called Paint Methods, and a very large number of people dreamed of coming to Siberia from Moscow and from abroad to participate. This is probably our first common achievement, which brought a certain circle of artists into the elite of the Russian graffiti community.
Then we held another large-scale Art Weekend festival in support of the Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk. In principle, I also moved to Moscow for the same reasons. Since 2010, I have been coming here for various projects, however, when you are here all the time, there are more opportunities. So the decision was made “to stop sitting in Krasnoyarsk.” During the time I’ve been here, there has been the biggest growth, various collaborations, meetings … Now there are already plans to go further, but it’s too early to talk about it.
Is there any international community in your field, cooperation and exchange of experience between countries?
We do not have any official communities that interact with each other in terms of contractual terms. Most often, it all starts with street teams, whose members become lifelong friends, develop together, build studios, and so on, but in general, in the age of social networks, everyone just communicates with everyone: people find pen pals and visit each other .
In the near future I will promote my work on the international stage. Two trips outside of Russia are coming soon. The goal is to move forward and develop. There are two directions: Asia and America. People from different industries are rushing there and this is not just happening. Gaming, music, art, programming – there is an audience and people ready to invest. My journey there has already begun, but due to restrictions, the year fell out, now I need to squeeze it.
I already had a project with Justin Bieber. He is a fan of works like mine, and a year and a half ago he just wrote to direct on Instagram and asked to take part in his charity auction. I agreed, provided the canvas, flew to Los Angeles. There was a private party and everything went well. Then Justin invited me to draw a picture for him. This story opens up new possibilities and motivates to reach new levels.
Let’s get back to your art. What are mini monsters and where did they come from?
Mini monsters are my characters, there are a lot of them. I started drawing them about ten years ago – all sorts of characters based on simple shapes. I have no art education, and it turned out to be difficult to switch from street fonts to characters, so I started with the simplest forms, and then gradually complicated them. They were all sorts of shapeless dragons, dinosaurs… And someone said: “Yes, they are some kind of monsters with you.” Only monsters are something evil and aggressive, and my heroes were, on the contrary, cute and simple. Therefore, I added the prefix “mini”, and it turned out that mini-monsters can no longer be any kind of aggressive. So I started working on them. At first they were kind of subcultural – in caps, sneakers and street fashion attributes. When I thought about my own ruler, which would be very adaptive, I decided to simplify them and turned them into some kind of “smilies” or masks system. In other words, these are just heads that express emotions and communicate with each other. In principle, this is a kind of mini-universe of masks or emoticons.
One way or another, you’ve already worked on completely different surfaces – a wall, a canvas, now here’s a gamepad case. What is easier to work with, what is easier to express your idea on, where does the graphics look better?
Of course my background is the walls. This is my foundation. But my goal is still to work as an artist, so there are no restrictions for me. Most of the time now I work with canvases, but at the same time I develop illustrations very much, any surfaces, adapt designs. Now I act more as a universal artist who works with both applied and digital materials. I am close to work with clothes, and with anything. I have a lot of projects that are related to completely different areas, so I adapt my style to the task. If you need a print – we draw digital, if you need a wall – we draw on the wall. I am equally pleased to work on any projects, because this is a manifestation of my creativity. I’m interested in trying new objects that will show me differently, give me new experiences and expand my audience. It’s always a plus.
A project with a design on a gamepad – what was it that was interesting to you, what do you remember, was there anything difficult or easy? What are your impressions?
I was very happy when they contacted me, because it was unexpected. When such large brands turn to an artist, it is a sign of trust and an assessment of style, so for me it was very cool and I immediately recharged my morale when I found out that this was possible. For me, it was, first of all, a cool collaboration. Then, when I was explained the task of making a design for a gamepad, I had to think it over, twist the photos, figure out how and what can be depicted, how busy the design can be … I usually try to focus on myself, so I did what I would like to keep in hands myself. And I was most satisfied with the feedback, and the result, and our interaction. This is another fairly large step that I liked to overcome. There were no difficulties, rather there was a period of reflection, and then active work that we carried out together. I threw off the options, we discussed and so brought everything to the final version. It turned out, I think, very cool.
Don’t you have the so-called fear of a blank slate?
Probably not, I have a lot of work experience. Sometimes it happens when you want to work, but you can’t. Then I just pause and exhale. I try again the next day and it works. There is no fear, there is experience on which you know how to work with yourself. For example, I often draw illustrations in the evening, I work on canvases in the studio in the morning, this is already some kind of system that allows me to work effectively for the past few years.
Let’s talk about gaming. What do you think about modern games, is there anything you especially like?
I have, shall we say, certain priorities. In creativity, in inspiration, and in gaming, I love the period of the 80s-90s, when everything was light and simple. Any 8- and 16-bit games are very close to me. I generally prefer something very simple. For example, my daughter plays Sonic. I love rpg games. Anything related to the nineties. Mario, Contra and that’s it. Mortal Kombat, of course, but not the one that is now, but more naive. In general, I like the aesthetics of the nineties in everything, they are just in a kind of naivety, when people experimented, searched and did to the maximum. I am glad that everything is progressing so that the difference between the game and reality is lost, but personally I prefer primitive stories. I still watch cartoons from the nineties, cult films of that period, and the games of that time are also close to me. Probably, these are just references to childhood and very fond memories.
Have you ever imagined your mini-monsters as heroes of the game, and what would a game made in your universe be like?
Actually this is a very cool topic because I have a few friends who are interested in making games. They threw such ideas at me and said: “Damn, imagine how cool it is to make such a game.” In general, my dream is to make animation and a game. Some kind of mini-cartoon, although the game is probably even more fun, because there you can control what happens. In addition, the main character of my universe is a little yellow Bobo ghost. He is present at every work, and I actively promote him as the main character. We can say that the prototypes of this ghost were a ghost from Pac-man and a regular smiley. When I was thinking about a super versatile character that would be very easy to understand and remember, I decided to look back at similar examples from the past. I took the Pac-man ghost and smiley as a basis, combined them and created my own yellow ghost based on the motives. Now he is already becoming a kind of street idol in our country. I can easily imagine a game in which he would fly and collect some coins – elementary and cool.

We, in turn, hope that someday we will see such a game on the Xbox console. The Xbox Wire Russia team would like to thank Zach for an interesting interview. Follow our news so as not to miss new and exciting stories.

Hi, there is a new version that can’t wait to meet you.
Honored master! We will mainly popularize 10 apps in the App Store as follows: Baby Panda Games For Preschool, Little Panda’s Math Adventure, Kids’ Good Habits & Manners, Jobs for Kids, Baby Panda’s Adventure, Baby bus Animals Farm, Baby Panda Loves Drawing, Baby Panda’s Nature Exploration, Little Panda Policeman, Little Panda Mini Games. (It’s said that collecting them all could easily cope well with the naughty kids!)
The programmer buddy with dark circles says all the products have been updated with the newest frameworks. Although I don’t get the idea of what he says , it seems to be incredible!
