Sugar’s Spotlight

Sugar is IS 7’s very own adorable Comfort Dog. As many of you already know, IS 7 is part of the NYC DOE Office of Safety and Youth Development Comfort Dog Program.  The 2022-2023 school year is Sugar’s sixth year here at IS 7. Although Covid has made our time with Sugar in the building a little difficult the past few years, she is always eager to get back into the swing of things.

Sugar just turned 7 years old on  September 10, 2022, and she is a lovable terrier mix breed.  She keeps busy going on long walks, playing with her favorite toys, and practicing some “tricks” for delicious treats. She can’t wait to be back and meet you all soon!

Student Cell Phone Policy 2022-2023

It is the school policy and expectation that all student cell phones and airpods are off and put away during school hours. Student cell phones and airpods should not be visible during the hours of 8:00 a.m and 2:20 p.m. If there is an emergency and you need to reach your child please contact the school directly and we will help you navigate the situation.  Please refrain from texting or calling the student’s cell phone during school hours.

Please read the steps that will be taken if a student does not follow the school’s policy:

  1. Students will be reminded, by all staff each day, to shut down their iphones/airpods and put them away.
  2. If the phone and/or the air pods are not put away, the teacher will make a phone call home and record it on the grade google log.
  3. After the second day, if the student is still not complying with the policy, the teacher will contact the dean.  The dean will confiscate the phone.
  4. The student will receive lunch detention and the parent will then be asked to pick up the phone or airpods from the dean.

Thank You,

Mr. Gregory Rocco

Assistant Principal of Operations and Discipline

Scanning September 2022-2023

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students in
our school. The NYPD’s School Safety Division has assisted us in achieving this goal and in
implementing a coordinated approach to school safety. As part of the safety initiative for New
York City schools, on some days students will be required to go through metal scanning
machines like the kind used to screen airline passengers for the purpose of detecting
weapons. These scanning devices, deployed by the NYPD’s School Safety Division, will
identify not only weapons but other objects that are never permitted in our building and will help
us to keep everyone safe in our school.

As you know, there are items that students are prohibited from bringing to school. These
items listed in the Citywide Behavioral Expectations to Support Student Learning (Discipline
Code) include but are not limited to blades, knives, other sharp metal instruments, etc. Students
who bring these items to school may be subject to disciplinary measures. Procedures for use of
scanning devices in our school are contained in Chancellor’s Regulation A-432 on Search and
Seizure which is available on the Department of Education’s
Website www. schools.nyc.gov. You can also request a copy from my office. We recommend
that you review the Discipline Code with your child to become familiar with what items are
prohibited in schools.

The scanning machines will not be at our schools every day, but students must be
prepared every day to successfully pass through scanners. Students must have their student
backpacks, as well as all metal objects (keys, belts. coins, jewelry, etc.), will go through the
scanner. So if students place all metal objects in their backpack before reaching the scanner, this
will help the line to move quickly. Students who are not properly prepared for scanning may be
required to go through a second, hand-held scan that may delay their arrival to their first class.
I hope that students will be attentive and follow instructions from all School Safety
Agents and school staff and be sensitive to other students waiting to be scanned to enter the
building. We will be reviewing details on the scanning process with your child in school this
week.

I need your support in making this safety measure successful. Please discuss this safety
procedure with your child. They must leave prohibited items at home, go quickly through
scanning, and enter the building on time in the morning. I know that your child’s safety is your
number one concern. We are doing everything possible to ensure that all students have a safe
learning environment in which they can achieve their full potential.
I am confident that this additional security resource will enhance the safety of everyone
in our community. If you have questions regarding the policies and procedures on scanning,
please don’t hesitate to call us.
I thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Jessica Jackson

A school that really teaches: mcm_arch – LiveJournal

In York, Staten Island, PS 62 Elementary School is scheduled to open in September 2015. Usually such events are rarely covered in the international press, but this is a special case – this is the first public school in the northeastern United States that will generate its own energy. This kind of architecture is called buildings net-zero-energy . When there is a shortage of energy, the building takes electricity from the grid, but then when there is an excess of it, for example, during the summer during school holidays, it returns electricity to the same system. By the end of the year, the balance of taken and given energy should be at least zero or positive.

According to the Landscape Architects website, PS 62 in Staten Island is one of the top 10 environmental projects of today. The 444-student school was designed by SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP) architects and AKF engineers. New York-based architecture firm SOM is one of the largest and best-known companies in the world. Designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, SOM has designed and is currently building the new World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) building in Lower Manhattan, which is set to be the tallest building in the United States (541 m). SOM is also a leader in sustainable architecture and innovation. for energy processing. Among the numerous clients of SOM, a separate place is occupied by various educational institutions, both higher and primary and secondary, campuses, research centers. For example, SOM designed and developed the energy strategy for the New School’s University Center in New York City and is currently managing its construction, which is scheduled for completion in 2013. The history of the design of SOM buildings for educational institutions goes back to the 60s – it was then, for example, that the Beinecke Rare Book Library of Yale University was created (1963) and the campus building of the University of Illinois in Chicago (1969). The AKF engineers are no strangers to education construction either. In 2010, they completed the Learning Spring School in New York for children with disabilities, including those with autism. This so-called “vertical campus” in Manhattan consists of the gymnasium itself, a library, an administration building, and special educational spaces.

Learning Spring School (“Vertical Campus”), Manhattan, NYC

-Island, which is not in vain called the “lungs of New York”: in terms of the amount of greenery and natural recreation areas, the area ranks first in the city. This is the least populated area of New York, respectively, with the least infrastructure. Without a doubt, the PS 62 school built by 2015 will be able to make this area more dynamic and eventually attract more people, because, as the authorities and the architects themselves say, this will be the first, but in the future not the only net-zero energy school in the State Island, since the whole point is precisely in the exchange of electricity produced by them and energy communication between similar buildings. School PS 62 will be a real modern high-tech building, however, however, it will not visually suppress the surrounding space, since, firstly, it is located in a quiet suburban area, and secondly, this complex consists of only two levels , including classrooms, a gym, a library, a cafeteria and outdoor parking for 25 places.
The important point is that it will not be just a school in the truest sense of the word, the building itself will teach and demonstrate what the architecture and ecology of the future should be like. Covering the walls and roof of the building on the south side of the building, photovoltaic panels will show children how sunlight is converted into electricity using a special, reliable, maintenance-free and environmentally friendly photovoltaic process. The architects estimated that approximately 2,000 of these photovoltaic panels would be needed, which would certainly dictate the appearance of the building.
Inside the school, touch devices will automatically turn off the lights when the sun’s rays are directed into the classrooms. This will teach children about economy and resource management: as soon as the child enters the classroom or any other room, he will need to manually turn on the light, nothing automatically turns on in the school, but only turns off, thereby preventing the electricity from working if the light is left on. This lighting system was developed by Brandston Partnership.

Air conditioning in summer and heating of the building in winter will be provided by geothermal energy, ie energy extracted from the ground. As you know, the temperature underground is constant and is 10-13 degrees. In summer it is slightly lower than on the surface, and in winter it is warmer. This temperature difference is the basis of a unique system of air conditioning in summer and heating in winter. Through 80 wells drilled to a depth of more than 120 m, geothermal energy will be drawn and converted by means of special equipment for the needs of the building.

All data, all results of created and spent energy will be publicly available in every class of the school. Dozens of “dashboards”, as well as a large display in the lobby, with a graphic image resembling a mobile phone battery icon, will notify whether there is a lack of energy, or vice versa, the school has generated enough energy (which means that the balance of energy consumption and energy production reduced to at least zero, that is, zero).
The school grounds will even have their own wind turbines, real ones, but more of a demonstrative-educational nature, since this particular area is not too open to the winds. And most importantly, children will be able to generate energy on their own – on ten special stationary bikes, which are designed so that they can produce energy. This is a very revealing lesson: by doing so, they explain to children that they spend energy in order to create it. The energy they generate by pedaling diligently will go exclusively to their personal needs: the generated energy will go into special structures that serve as chargers for mobile phones, players and other electronic devices. The same function of the charger will be performed by a sculptural installation in the school yard in the form of metal trees, the leaves of which will be covered with photovoltaic panels.

It is planned to create a central courtyard and another on the second floor with plant beds for the school garden, while inside there will be a small greenhouse where the students can transfer the plants they have grown for the winter. The whole territory will be surrounded by a spacious walking path with special markings telling the children exactly how far they have passed. In addition, special stands will be installed at six points along the road, the task of which will be to present information about how the building works, about the net-zero energy system and school progress in energy generation.
