Secondary Education in the USA
Secondary Education in the USA for Foreigners offers a wide range of subjects from which students can choose a program leading to college/university or a career in business or a specific field of activity. Courses offered vary from school to school and are listed in school manuals. Around the tenth grade, when students start planning their careers and choosing subjects, a high school in America provides consultations that will be useful for their studies.
Counseling continues throughout the senior year of high school and college, and the first two years of a four-year college or university program.
Upon satisfactory completion of the 12th grade, the student receives a high school diploma. (In the US, students graduate from high school, middle school, elementary school, and even kindergarten.) High schools in America (like colleges and universities) hold graduation ceremonies with hats, gowns, diplomas, and performances by faculty and students.
Graduation ceremonies are called “beginnings” because they mark the beginning of a new stage in a student’s life. Americans are enthusiastic about this period, and graduations are a time of great celebration and excitement for students. It is a special honor for a student (usually the top student) to be chosen to deliver the farewell speech at the graduation ceremony.
The importance of hobbies and sports
Secondary education in the US for foreigners can also be interesting in terms of hobbies and sports. With the exception of physical education classes, school sports are usually extra-curricular, that is, they take place outside of school hours.
Team sports have a high profile in many high schools, and being “on the school team” is more important to many students than being the leader in the class. (In fact, in terms of securing university scholarships, they may be right!) Students who excel in sports are often referred to disparagingly as “jokers,” implying that they are too dumb or lazy to excel in their academic work.
Although the joker stereotype doesn’t always ring true, sports stars tend to neglect their school work. This has led some schools to introduce “no pass/no play” rules in which only students in the curriculum can participate in extracurricular sports.
In addition to sports, many other school activities take place outside of school hours, including science and nature clubs, music organizations (eg orchestra and choir), arts and theater groups, and language clubs. Almost every school has a student-run newspaper and usually has a darkroom.
Colleges and universities value student achievement in high school extracurricular activities, as do employers.
