Museum “The Abode of Angels” in the park “Ruskeala” in Karelia: what to see, how to get there

The Museum of Wooden Sculpture “The Abode of Angels”, which opened on the territory of the mountain park “Ruskeala” – an interesting and unusual attraction. Firstly, the museum was opened quite recently, which means it will be of interest even to those who have already been to the mountain park. Secondly, the format of the museum itself is quite unconventional – it is a large frame pavilion with an area of over 150 square meters. m and a height of more than 7 meters, which is quite atypical for an exhibition of park sculpture, which is usually exhibited in the open air.

As for the actual content of the pavilion – wooden sculptures, here you will see not just a few dozen unrelated objects, but a whole sculptural composition, large-scale, striking with the depth of conception and the highest level of implementation. In a fairly limited space, the authors managed to create a whole world where people and angels, closely related to each other, live under one roof.

How the Museum “Resident of Angels” was created

The author of all the sculptures is Voronezh master Alexander Ivchenko, Champion of Russia in park sculpture, winner and multiple laureate of many international woodcarving competitions. In the work, the master was assisted by his partner Alexander Alferov. The masters themselves called their duet “two Sashas”, in which the Cup of the Russian Championship was taken, not without humor – “AeroSUNY”.

As for the idea of the future museum, Alexander Ivchenko recalls that for the first time the idea to create something similar was born after the Forgotten Past festival of wooden sculpture, which was held in Karelia a year earlier. It took 14 months of waiting and many hours of hard and painstaking work to bring the plan to life.

The main problem that all wood carvers working in the genre of park sculpture face is the insecurity of finished products. Sculptures are in most cases in public places, and carvers have to take this into account, for example, avoid small parts that are easy to break off. In the case of the “Abode of the Angels”, the craftsmen did not have such restrictions, as a result, the finished works on the technique of execution turned out to be close to classical interior sculpture.

What’s inside the Angels’ Residence Museum?

Those who were lucky enough to see the sculptures “live” say that the museum is more like a real theater, frozen in an instant. According to the plot, there are three levels here: people, angels and the Creator, whose hand, consisting of 4000 wooden elements, is in the center of the whole composition.

After the divine level comes the plane of angels. It is she who is the main one here, the figures of angels are made in the growth of a man, and when visitors enter the museum, they immediately begin to identify themselves with angels, who really have a lot of human features. There is a musician angel, an accountant angel, a janitor angel, and even a little bully angel with a slingshot shooting stars. And each of them has its own role, each implements the Creator’s plan.

The people in Angels’ Realm are just little pieces on a chessboard. Someone, with the light hand of the Creator, falls into black cells, someone into white ones, but sooner or later everyone will leave the game, everyone will be swept into a box by a heavenly janitor.

In general, there are many dramatic, but at the same time life stories in the “Resident of Angels”. Every detail is in its place here, every, even the smallest figure or element performs its task, creating an overall picture.

For example, one of the most memorable compositions in the “Abode of the Angels” is called “Farewell and Meeting”. On the hospital table lies a body covered with a sheet, saddened relatives stand nearby. And the soul of the deceased is already striving upward, to her earthly husband, who left earlier and became an angel, and who has already prepared small wings for his beloved wife.

In order to fully reveal the intention of the authors, next to each such scene there is an explanatory tablet telling the story of the composition. Moving from one sculpture to another, plunging into the stories that the sculptor tells through his creations, the museum visitor gradually abandons all everyday worries and problems, and begins to think about something more important. This is the power of art.

How to get to the Museum “Angel’s Home”

From Lumivaara Recreation Center, the “House of Angels” Museum can be reached in less than two hours. To do this, go to the A-121 highway and move towards the city of Sortavala, and then, after the village of Rautakangas, turn north towards the Ruskeala mountain park. If you go on a trip in winter, try to time it so that you arrive at the park in the late afternoon. The night illumination of the winter “Ruskeala” does not leave indifferent even seasoned tourists.

Museum City of Angels in Lahdenpohja – history of the Lutheran Church of Jakkima

Neighborhood

City of Angels – Yakkima Church in Lakhdenpokhya

The former village of Yakkima is located three kilometers from Lakhdenpokhya. Here, on the hill next to the Church Hill, there is an unusual monumental building – Yakkima Church, built in the middle of the 19th century by local Lutheran Finns.

Kircha Yakkima: the story of oblivion

Kirkha served the parishioners for a little less than a century, and then passed to the USSR following the results of the Soviet-Finnish war. After the crossing, a camp for prisoners of war was set up in the building, the church was surrounded with barbed wire, and towers were installed in the corners. After Yakkim’s church in Lahdenpohja, it was used as a hostel and warehouse of the city trade. In 1977, the wooden roof, bell tower and floors burned down, and bare brick walls remained from the former grandeur.

For about twenty years the temple stood naked in front of bad weather and cold. In the early 90s, a granite monument to Finnish soldiers was returned here, and a cross was erected. Thanks to the active assistance of Finland, the walls of the church were covered with tin on top, protecting them in this way from wind and water.

Directly behind the church is an interesting natural landmark – a two-hundred-year-old pine tree. Under this tree, Elias Lönnrot, a famous Finnish folklorist and linguist, collected his book Kanteletar from folk tales, the younger sister of the great Kalevala epic.

Another curious exhibit on the territory of the church is a genderless wooden man enclosed in an ornament of likes and dislikes, staring at a smartphone. The “New Wheel of Samsara” is a real symbol of the modern population of the Earth…

Well, the most important in the church of Lahdenpokhya are the sights of the City of Angels. There are few statues, but the sculptor put his soul and deep meaning into each.

City of Angels in Karelia: the second life of the Lutheran Church

The Museum of the City of Angels appeared in the ruins of the church in 2019. Thanks to him, the church gained a second wind – the exhibition drew attention to the object, and it even began to be restored. The exposition consists of many wooden angel sculptures in the most unusual images. All sculptures are made by the best European and Russian masters.

What to do in the Museum of Angels in Karelia:

  • listen to magical stories and fairy tales from the curator of the exhibition;
  • take many original photos and videos;
  • sit in the arms of angels and admire the wonderful evening illumination;
  • explore the ruins of the church, examine the stand near the entrance with photos and history of the temple;
  • to help the animal shelter (there is a sad statue of a dog with a ladle at the entrance, where visitors put coins and banknotes if they wish) and donate to the restoration of the temple itself (to a wooden old man holding out his hand).

The church itself is made in the shape of a cross, so the room inside seems huge. The lack of a roof adds color.

Where do angels come from

Museum City of Angels in Lahdenpokhya is the result of a unique international festival “Between Heaven and Earth”. The competition in 2019 brought together the best woodcarvers – for a week they worked on their masterpieces right in the ruins of the temple. The church itself became the main theme for creating works of art.

Both individual masters and teams took part in the festival. The raw material was thick logs with a diameter of about 60 cm. The resulting creations were installed outside and inside. In the nomination “Humanity” the master individualist Lev Bryukhanov won with a wonderful sculpture “Mother’s Hands”. And among the team works, the composition “Heavenly Harvest” won.

Periodically, new exhibits appear in the church and the City of Angels. In February 2021, a small angel girl in color was installed here. In her hands the angel holds a staff topped with the Star of Bethlehem. They promise that the star will soon glow – a special light bulb will be built into it. The author of the sculpture is Dmitry Kolesnikov from Sergiev Posad, who previously created the Guardian Angel figure for the museum. For the new project, they chose a place near the altar part of the church.

Sky for all

At first glance, the City of Angels in Karelia is a simple museum on a religious theme. But as soon as you go into the ruins under the open sky, you seem to be immersed in a magical atmosphere: it seems that the figures are looking at you from all sides. During the day, unusual music plays here, and in the evening soft lights are lit, giving this little world even more mystery. Stunning stories filled with love, hope, despair are written next to each creation.

At the entrance to the Museum of Lahdenpokhya Church “City of Angels” guests are greeted by a small angel with a flashlight, inside which the stars glow. Next comes the composition “Heavenly Harvest” of four figures. An angel secretary from the Bureau of Orders takes notes with wishes from childless couples, the next angel grows babies in cabbage. Another is engaged in “harvesting”.
