how the accessible environment in Mogilev is being transformed

For an impressive number of residents of Mogilev with disabilities, the realization of their right to participate in political, economic, social and cultural life is directly related to unimpeded access to infrastructure. Creating an accessible environment in the city is a thorny, time-consuming process, but, of course, necessary. To what extent the urban system of Mogilev has changed in recent years, the correspondent of the information portal Mogilove. by studied

For whom and for what?

Hearing the term “accessible environment”, many first of all remember people with impaired functions of the musculoskeletal system, vision or hearing. But do not forget that the concept affects a much wider section of society. you must have met elderly people on the streets of the city who conquered the tops of huge curbs with a cane, as well as mothers with strollers trying to get into stores without ramps.

Accessibility makes life easier for many people: injured people, mothers with prams, the elderly, cyclists and even travelers with luggage.

Correct the situation

Nowadays, it is not uncommon to face the mistakes of the past and correct them. A vivid example is the premises in which the Social Services Centers for the population of the Leninsky and Oktyabrsky districts of Mogilev are now based.

After large-scale repair and construction works, horizontal platforms appeared in front of the entrances to the premises, smooth ramps equipped with rounded handrails were installed, tactile tiles were laid, personnel call buttons were installed. Let’s pay attention to the fact that there is a contrasting color of the first and last steps of the flights of stairs.

— The width of the doorways in the offices is more than 80 cm, there are no thresholds. For the free movement of people using wheelchairs, the width of the corridors is also provided, – conducting a tour of the day care department for the disabled, explains the director of the Center for Social Services of the Oktyabrsky District Viktor Kovalchuk . — The offices of the department are marked with tables with duplication of the main visual information in Braille. Tactile floor indicators are laid around the entire perimeter of the compartment. Mnemonic circuits and sound speech informants are installed.

As Elena Devbunova, head of the day care department for the disabled of the Leninsky district of Mogilev, noted, people with musculoskeletal disorders are brought to the department and back home by car with a lift. For wheelchair users, a mobile and convenient device has also appeared – a caterpillar stair lift.

In order to integrate people with hearing impairments into society and improve their quality of life, the department for labor, employment and social protection of the Mogilev City Executive Committee, together with the Mogilev regional organization of the public association “Belarusian Society of the Deaf”, is implementing a state social order for the provision of social mediation services for the reception – transmission of messages of people with hearing impairment to emergency and other services of the city.

The main means of communication for most people with hearing impairments is sign language, which has its own vocabulary and grammar. The existing infrastructure does not fully meet the communication needs of this category of citizens. Socially significant facilities (healthcare institutions, internal affairs bodies, utilities, etc.) for the most part do not have sign language interpreters in their staff, which makes it difficult for a person with a hearing impairment to receive information and services.

The provision of social services around the clock allows you to quickly solve the problems that arise in people with hearing impairment in the event of emergency and socially significant issues.

Over 1500 mediation services were rendered to 172 people with hearing impairments during 7 months of the current year.

Modernity dictates new rules

Since the beginning of the century, the topic of accessible environment has been more actively discussed throughout the country. A significant achievement in this niche is the reformation of the building codes of the Republic of Belarus, which begins in 2012. Since 2021, in accordance with modern design standards, the following measures are envisaged in construction to create a barrier-free environment for physically weakened persons: the installation of speech sound informants with remote control, the installation of plates indicating the floor number in embossed letters in Braille, the arrangement of platforms in front of the entrances with a smooth interface with landscaping elements, installation of tactile warning tiles and lowered curb stone, arrangement of parking spaces for people with disabilities.

– We are also trying to install lifting platforms with vertical movement for the disabled. For example, they appeared in residential buildings of the Sputnik 2 microdistrict, residential buildings No. 1 and No. 4 on the street. Ivan Mazalov, No. 70 on the street. Grishin, – notes the head of the construction department of the Mogilev City Executive Committee Andrey Belyavsky . – Recently, many objects of engineering and transport infrastructure have been introduced. The same Krupskaya Street, where tactile tiles with lowered curbstones are used at pedestrian crossings, and electronic sound speech informants with remote control are installed at two public transport stops, all this is a worthy example of a quality overhaul.

Heroes of our time

Unitary enterprise “Tiflos” NGO “BelTIZ”, part of the society of the visually impaired, develops design documentation for the arrangement of an accessible environment for people with limited vision or its complete absence, manufactures tactile elements from various materials and different designs, and also performs installation work on their installation.

“Today more than 60% of people with disabilities work at our enterprise,” says the first deputy director, chief engineer of the unitary enterprise “Tiflos” of the NGO “BelTIZ” Andrey Gavrilenko . – We are the only ones in the Mogilev region who are engaged in the manufacture and arrangement of an accessible environment for the visually impaired. Our employees design, manufacture tactile elements, perform construction and installation works. When an accessible environment is arranged at any facility, we offer the customer a set of works: installation of not only guiding and warning elements, but also mnemonic diagrams, sound speech informants. On the account of the enterprise, the performance of work in almost all regional centers and many regional ones.

The company aims to promote, organize and implement a comprehensive rehabilitation of the visually impaired and social adaptation, the creation of a universal environment for people with impaired vision or its complete loss.

Andrei Mikhailovich clarifies that the installation of accessible environment elements must be included in projects for the creation of new buildings, as well as in projects for ongoing capital repairs.

It is also important that organizations that own public buildings want to introduce a barrier-free environment into urban space, realizing the social significance of this process.

In turn, the Mogilev enterprise with a 90-year history is ready to vouch for the quality of its products and sincerely wants to establish relations with public and private organizations, individual entrepreneurs who want to help people with disabilities and make their lives more comfortable.

According to the Department of Labour, Employment and Social Protection of the Mogilev City Executive Committee, starting from 2021, measures were taken to create a barrier-free environment in five multi-apartment residential buildings, and the h3O sports and recreation complex was put into operation, which is fully accessible to people with disabilities . Polyclinics No. 2 and 3 can also be safely called advanced in this direction.

Sources of opinions

Chairperson of the Mogilev regional organization of NGO “BelTIZ” shared her opinion on the evolution of the urban environment Natalia Panteleeva :

— We feel it in the city. But, unfortunately, people who create an accessible environment do not always understand us – those for whom even the smallest stretch of road with certain defects is equated to an abyss. I’ll give you an example. Inside, the modern polyclinic No. 3 was equipped really worthy. However, no one paid attention to the fact that it is necessary to put a tactile guide strip for the blind along the road from the bus stop to the medical facility. But without it, it is incredibly difficult for us to find the right direction on our own!

Natalya Vasilievna also noted that in addition to architectural barriers, very often people with special destinies face informational, cultural and social barriers.

Many people with disabilities feel embarrassed about their situation and because of the fear of facing the realities of life, as well as ignorance, do not even think to seek help from psychologists, look for a job, plan for the future.

Volunteer of the rehabilitation room for the visually impaired, functioning on the basis of the Center for Social Services of the Leninsky District, Roman Dvortsov explains that visually impaired people often face barriers that come from fellow citizens. For example, the indifference of the attendants in stores, the lack of knowledge of the elementary etiquette of communicating with the blind.

— We must educate a generation of understanding people. I am sure that even one extra-curricular lesson in elementary school, teaching children how to properly interact with blind people, one day may come in handy for them, Roman sums up.

Margarita Mankevich , head of the Rehabilitation Room for the Visually Impaired:

— A few things are vital for blind people: the operation of traffic lights, the quality of roads. I think it is necessary to legally approve the installation of traffic lights with sound signals. Since traffic lights are not a pleasure, not a joy and not an indulgence, but a very serious element of the safety of people’s lives on the road. An important point is that we, blind people, should hear several options for sound: one that will indicate red light, the other green. After all, if you see with your eyes, then I “see” with your ears. In addition, the traffic light should be heard from afar, because first we need to find a pedestrian crossing, and then cross it. And most importantly, voice points should be on both sides of the road. Let me remind you that visually impaired people also need contrast marking of stairs.

Olga Botnari, ten-time champion of Moldova, world record holder in powerlifting:

— I was engaged in powerlifting, table tennis, weightlifting — love for an active lifestyle is in my blood. She moved from Chisinau to Mogilev almost 6 years ago. For some reason, since childhood, I was drawn to Belarus. Here I started life from scratch and now I adore the city with all my heart. I am surrounded by kind people, beautiful nature. I also notice that the formation of a barrier-free environment for wheelchair users does not stand still. Yes, I usually spend my free time in the central part of the city or near the Mogilev special home for veterans, the elderly and the disabled, where I live. I like to visit the nearby shops, I am glad that I can contact the doctors of the 3rd polyclinic, which is really well equipped. But trips by public transport sometimes turn into tests. It is important for me to get on a low-floor bus, which is why I always call the car park in advance. It happens that such buses are not allowed on a flight suitable for me. In addition, I have a serious shoulder injury, so passers-by or the driver usually help me get into the transport.

Natalia Stolyarova, a resident of Mogilev:

— When my son Makar was 3 years old, I contacted the ZhREU employees, and they installed a ramp for him in front of the house in a short time. However, another obstacle for us was the staircase on the first floor of the entrance leading to the elevator. We have been trying to resolve this issue for a long time. First, a home-made wooden ramp was installed in the entrance, which was very difficult to lift not only for a fragile woman, but also for any man, then we were offered to install a ramp at a very sharp angle of inclination, I refused it. After appeals to representatives of the executive authorities, we were nevertheless provided with the best option – they installed a convenient lift. People in wheelchairs, as well as those who help them, often face obstacles. While my son and I get to school, we have to cross three roadways and go around areas that are inaccessible to us. To date, part of the road has been repaired, but several sections have so far been left without attention.
Of course, the world is not without good people. I am very grateful to the Belarusians, without whom we would not have been able to raise money for a serious operation for my son. And also to the director and all the staff of school No. 18, who created comfortable conditions for the socialization of my child: they installed a ramp, convenient access to the dining room, equipped a classroom on the ground floor, and simply take great care of Makar and his classmates.

Today, 900 visually impaired, 499 hearing impaired, 1135 people with special needs of psychophysical development, 854 people with diseases of the musculoskeletal system live in the city. In the first half of 2022, 106 citizens with disabilities were employed.

Development of kittens by day – how kittens grow by week: growth of kittens by months

Understanding the amazing transformation that a kitten goes through from birth to adulthood will help you provide him with the right balanced nutrition at every stage of development.

  • Birth
  • Neonatal
  • Weaning
  • Intensive growth
  • Slow growth
  • Growing up kittens

Birth

Immediately after birth, care should be taken to ensure that kittens begin to receive mother’s milk. In the first hours and days after birth, the mother, along with milk, provides the newborn with the necessary nutrients that contribute to the healthy development of kittens.

Birth

Nutrition

After birth, kittens should immediately crawl to their mother and start sucking milk. This is how they get colostrum, a component of mother’s milk that is rich in antibodies and strengthens the immune system.

Birth

Health

At birth, kittens are at risk of two types: First, due to abruption of the placenta, they may suffer from lack of oxygen for different periods of time. Secondly, after birth, they come into direct contact with bacteria and viruses in the environment. The breeder must take all precautions, carefully prepare the birthing arena and supervise the birth of kittens, in order to reduce the risk of neonatal health problems.

Birth

Behavior

Although kittens are born deaf and blind, they exhibit a number of reflex behavioral responses early on. Kittens are already able to navigate in space, relying on smell and touch. They can warm themselves by snuggling up to their mother and suck her milk to satisfy their hunger.

Birth

Development

Newborn kittens should weigh approximately 2-3% of their mother’s weight. In the early days, their daily weight gain is approximately 10% of their birth weight. Males usually weigh more and grow faster. Kittens are born blind and deaf. They are drawn to their mother for protection and nourishment.

Birth

Housing conditions

Newborn kittens should always be near their mother, who warms, feeds and licks them. Their playpen should be kept at around 30°C to reduce the risk of hypothermia, and aim to keep the humidity at 65-70%.

Neonatal

Newborn kittens are protected and warm next to their mother and other kittens of their litter. Most of the time they sleep and eat.

0 to 3 weeks

Health

During the first days of life, kittens should be examined by a responsible veterinarian. The veterinarian will check to see if the kittens have birth defects or health problems that require treatment. Separation of kittens from their mother and littermates at the neonatal age can lead to physical and mental retardation and behavioral problems associated with aggression. Deworming in the first six months of life should be carried out monthly.

0-3 weeks

Nutrition

During this stage, the kitten’s immune system is still largely supported by mother’s milk, which provides the body with essential proteins for development.

0-3 weeks

Behavior

At this stage, kittens sleep most of the day – about 90% of the time in the first few weeks. They only move to crawl to their mother for warmth and milk. Kittens already know how to purr and make other sounds.

0 to 3 weeks

Development

At about five days old, kittens open their eyes. The umbilical cord falls off about a week after birth. At the same time, kittens begin to gain weight from 10 to 30 grams per day.

0–3 weeks

Living conditions

In the first weeks of a kitten’s life, the main requirements for keeping conditions are cleanliness, silence and warmth. Excessive noise and distractions can disrupt sleep and eating patterns. It is very important that the kitten’s body temperature does not fall below 35 ° C, otherwise it will not be able to effectively absorb mother’s milk. And if the body temperature drops below 32 ° C, the kitten will lose the sucking reflex, which will make normal feeding impossible.

Weaning

The physical development of kittens accelerates and the process of weaning begins. This is an important stage in which the kitten learns by watching the mother and interacting with other kittens.

4-8 weeks

Nutrition

As the kitten’s milk teeth develop, the weaning process begins. After a while, the kittens show their first interest in the solid food that their mother receives, and then you can begin to introduce solid food into their diet. Because of their immature digestive system, it is very important for kittens to receive a diet that is easy to digest and takes into account their special needs at this stage.

4-8 weeks

Health

At this stage, the immune system weakens. This means that the protection provided by maternally acquired antibodies has already weakened, but the amount of these antibodies is still high enough that vaccination may not be effective. During this period, the kitten becomes especially susceptible to diseases. Because sleep helps boost your kitten’s immune system, it’s important to provide a warm, comfortable, and quiet place to sleep.

4-8 weeks

Behavior

At this stage, the kittens begin to interact more and groom each other’s fur. They begin to actively play, run, attack and imitate hunting. At this stage, kittens’ vision is fully developed.

4–8 weeks

Development

Hearing and sense of smell are well developed by the fourth week. By the end of the sixth-seventh weeks, the sleep pattern and motor skills characteristic of adult animals begin to form. Key social skills are developed in the process of communicating with littermates, and learning occurs by observing the behavior of the mother.

4-8 weeks

Housing conditions

As kittens become more curious and active at this age, it is important to make the environment safe for them. In addition, housing conditions play an important role in their learning, so make sure that the kittens have constant access to toys and other objects that stimulate the development of cognitive functions. Regular communication with different people will help kittens interact more confidently with a person in the future.

Intensive growth

The kitten begins to understand what is required of him and develops behavior that will not change during his life.

2-4 months

Health

Approximately eight weeks of age is ideal for a kitten to be vaccinated for the first time, followed by a mandatory booster after 3-5 weeks. This is an important process that provides the kitten with protection against dangerous diseases in adulthood. See your veterinarian for a vaccination plan.

2-4 months

Nutrition

Some nutrients are not yet fully absorbed by the kitten, so it is important that he receives a diet tailored to his individual needs at a particular stage of his development. This food provides your pet with the nutrients and energy it needs during this vital stage of development.

2-4 months

Behavior

At this stage, the kitten’s behavior is most influenced by its environment, including kittens from its litter, other pets and people. In addition, the kitten begins to understand what place he occupies in the house, and he may develop dominant or submissive behavior depending on his experience and upbringing.

2-4 months

Development

This is a key stage in the development of a relationship, so stability, support and emotional attachment are very important. Effective socialization at this stage will help raise a well-mannered and happy cat.

2-4 months

Housing conditions

Kittens can be taken from their mother and introduced to a new home from 8 weeks of age. Depending on the breeder, this period can increase up to 12 weeks. Before bringing a kitten home, it is important to make sure that the apartment is completely ready for its arrival: you should hide electrical wires and close sockets, secure windows, balconies and stairs, and remove all sharp and small objects.

Slow growth

As the kitten matures, it gradually reaches full physical maturity.

Older than 4 months

Health

During this period, cats begin to mark the territory where they live with urine and facial secretions: they rub their heads against objects, other animals and people. This is a sign of the onset of puberty. Now you should discuss with the veterinarian the need for sterilization (castration).

Older than 4 months

Nutrition

As a kitten reaches physical maturity and approaches adult weight, it should be gradually transitioned to an adult cat diet and portion sizes adjusted accordingly. The balance of nutrients in the composition of the food depends on the age of the cat and factors that affect metabolism, such as lifestyle (whether the animal is outdoors) and castration (whether the animal has been castrated).

Older than 4 months

Behavior

As the cat matures, it will become more and more dominant in your family. It “tests” the status of humans and other animals in the existing hierarchy. It is important that you, as the owner, maintain the norms of behavior and daily routine that you establish for your pet in the first months of his life. The stability of the situation will allow you to control the level of stress.

Older than 4 months

Development

At this stage, the kitten changes teeth by 30 permanent teeth. If the kitten is not spayed, puberty occurs at six months, accompanied by sexual cycles and mating behavior. By eight months, a kitten reaches 80% of the weight of an adult animal. Depending on the size of the breed, maturation occurs between 12 and 15 months.

Older than 4 months

Housing conditions

If the kittens have received all the necessary vaccinations, from the age of about six months you can let them go outside. It is best to proceed in stages. Until the kittens get used to the new environment, stay outside with them. When they feel more confident, they will begin to actively explore the surrounding space. As a rule, cats move farther from the house than cats. At this stage, consistent owner behavior and discipline are important.

Growing up your pet

The weight of an adult animal is 40-50 times the weight of a newborn kitten.

12-18 months

Growing up your pet

Kittens become adults about 12 months after birth, while larger breed cats do not reach maturity until 15 months of age. When a cat becomes an adult, it should be gradually transitioned to a food that can meet its nutritional needs, taking into account the breed and lifestyle.
