Dermaplaning is a manipulation during which a layer of dead cells and fluff is removed from the skin surface with a razor. The procedure is not new, but from year to year it enters the next round of popularity. Here’s what you need to know before you try shaving your face.
Behind the fashionable word “dermaplaning” or its Japanese counterpart kao sori lies a simple face shave.
But the purpose of these two practices is different. Adherents of dermaplaning claim that along with getting rid of vellus hair, it is easy to carry out powerful peeling with a razor, which means that you can achieve smooth, radiant skin in one procedure.
It is rumored that long before the appearance of a special term, Hollywood stars Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor shaved their facial skin, but now beauty bloggers often practice dermaplaning – decorative cosmetics fit much better on an ultra-smooth face.

How is dermaplaning done at home?
The most important thing is to choose the right tool. Any razor won’t work. It should be a machine with one blade, resembling a scalpel. The instrument is held at an angle of 45 degrees to the skin and the entire surface of the face is treated with scraping movements.
What can go wrong?
Despite the fact that the skin after dermaplaning really becomes smooth, the procedure also has enough drawbacks.
When shaving, it is important to maintain the maximum level of cleanliness: perform the procedure on cleansed skin, monitor the condition of the blades, wipe the skin only with paper towels. Otherwise, there is a high risk of infection.
The optimal frequency of manipulation is once a month. If part with dermaplaning, then, as with the abuse of acid peels, the skin will be protected by hyperkeratosis. Unfortunately, vellus hair can grow back much faster than it’s time to shave again. In this case, the procedure practically loses its meaning.
In addition, many girls note that fine hairs become more noticeable after shaving . There is no scientific evidence for this – mechanical hair removal does not affect their pigmentation and stiffness in any way, this is a genetic factor. But subjective sensations can spoil the impression of the procedure.
For whom is dermaplaning contraindicated?
Primary contraindications are specific skin conditions that may be aggravated by external exposure, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, rosacea or acne.
What else is important to know?
By removing the upper stratum corneum with a razor, you simultaneously remove the skin’s protection from the sun’s rays. It is due to this that the face shines and looks smooth. Therefore, after dermaplaning, it is important not to forget to protect the skin from the sun, to minimize the use of cosmetics with active ingredients. You will also need active hydration products to restore the protective barrier. True, they, in turn, will accelerate the formation of a new stratum corneum, which you will want to shave off.

We already tested one device for combating facial hair from the Middle Kingdom, but it was quite a long time ago – more than a year ago. And so our friends from Gearbest decided to find out again what we think about Chinese electric shavers, and sent us a sample for research.
Last time we came to the conclusion that the device cannot be called ideal, but at least it is quite adequate for the amount spent. Let’s see what a rotary electric razor will show us, equipped with “only” three shaving heads (the previous Chinese copy had four).

Package
The box came to us in a surprisingly decent condition – not wrinkled, not worn. Just like not from China.
Opening the box, inside we found:
- an electric shaver with a transparent protective cover put on the shaving head;
- AC adapter 100-220 volts;
- brush for cleaning knife nets;
- black velvet-look fabric bag for storing the razor;
- manual in Chinese and English;
- (presumably) warranty card – exclusively in Chinese.
At first glance
The device is assembled with high quality, the gaps between the plastic parts are thin, the appearance is neat.
That’s just the love of the Chinese for everything “chrome” hurts the eye a little.
The storage bag is very strange: it is so small that even just the razor itself, without accessories, does not fit into it completely. Or is it, on the contrary, a bag for accessories, and the razor needs to be carried separately, relying on a protective cover? But then some object in the suitcase can accidentally press the power button – it does not block in any way – and you will arrive at your destination with a completely discharged razor.
Manual
The user manual is written in English and Chinese and has a lot of pictures, which makes it very easy to understand. There is even a FAQ with a list of the most common problems.
We presumably identified the second document as a warranty card, but we could be mistaken – it is exclusively in Chinese, not a single English word except for the abbreviation “ISO”.
Control
There are only two controls: on/off and trimmer tilt/retract buttons.
Another button folds down the shaving head with knives.
Monochrome LCD with blue backlight shows battery level in minutes. When the shaver is turned on or charging, the backlight works, when it is off, it does not, but the charge level is always displayed. In the photo below – a completely discharged razor (this is how she came to us). If you recharge it at least a little, the number of minutes that it expects to work from the remaining charge will appear in the center of the circle.
Operation
In principle, you can start shaving immediately: you can use it with the power cord connected. If you don’t want to get tangled up in the wires, you have to wait about an hour – the electric shaver charges quite quickly.
The question that we still have not fully clarified: is it possible to “wet” shaving in the shower? On the one hand, the inscription on the box directly says that “body washable” – that is, you can wash the body under running water. The instruction adds: but in no case should it be submerged under water for a long time .
We decided that since the case can even be immersed under water for a short time, then the device will withstand anything in the shower for 5 minutes. So far it has withstood – but we only used it for one and a half to two weeks.
This cordless rotary shaver is otherwise the same as other cordless rotary shavers. Well, it’s just absolutely nothing, there’s nothing to even remember: “a razor is like a razor,” and that’s it.
Maintenance
In our case, all maintenance consisted in the fact that at the end of shaving, the cover of the shaving head with the knives placed in it was folded back using a special button (see the “Control” section) and the compartment itself and its cover were washed for 15-20 seconds under a fairly tight stream of warm water. This was quite enough, the attached brush was never used.
Practice tests
Based on a reasonable compromise between quality and duration of testing, we arrived at the following procedure:
- the main set of tests is carried out by one person, successively growing 1-day, 2-day, and 4-day stubble after the “exemplary” shave with the machine;
- after this impression of the first tester is tested by another expert on his 2-day stubble;
- after that, one of the testers with a beard issues his verdict on the functionality of the trimmer attachment;
- then fully charges the shaver and passes the discharge test with 5-minute iterations of turning it on at “idle” (no shaving).
The
4-day stubble
Long bristles are not given to Chinese rotary shavers. The symptoms are exactly the same: approximately 90% -95% of the hairs are shaved within the first two or three minutes – but for the remaining 5% -10% you have to “hunt” for about the same amount – and not the fact that with a guaranteed result. If you are the owner of a rotary razor suffering from the same disease and you need to shave a long stubble – do not be lazy, shorten it first with a trimmer. It will be faster.
2-day stubble
Since we already had a rough idea of what we were dealing with, it was decided not to suffer from perfectionism and use the good old proven algorithm: shaving ends when the person in the mirror looks shaved – and no such groping and searching roughness. Flyco FS356 completed this task in 2 minutes 30 seconds. At the same time, most of the area of the face was shaved quite well, but the “islands of unshavenness” were present and tactilely easily detected.
1-day stubble
The shave took the same amount of time as the 2-day stubble, and the result was exactly the same.
“Wet” shave
Shaving with just water after a series of unsuccessful experiments with a variety of razors, we recognized as pampering, so we immediately started shaving with shaving gel. The quality does not become perfect, but it definitely increases. The time varies insignificantly, and what is the point in this case to talk separately about the time of shaving, when the procedure includes taking a shower?
Second expert, 2-day stubble
It seems that this razor prefers rather thick and coarse bristles – it sometimes manages to “lose” thin hairs even with a relatively short length.
Trimmer
Simple trimmer, no additional bells and whistles. With the task of trimming whiskey or “in draft mode” to free a certain area of skin from hair, it copes without any problems. True, if the area is large, then it is better to walk on it with a razor head “clean”.
Operating time
The razor lasted 16 turns for 5 minutes, stalling at the 2nd minute of the 17th. This is a very good indicator. In addition, we note the adequacy of the counter of the remaining operating time: at the very beginning it showed 60 minutes, and as these minutes passed, its readings diverged from the actual operating time by a maximum of a minute or two. True, the last 4 inclusions went beyond the planned 60 minutes, so the razor turned on and off under the proud number “zero” on the counter;)
Comfort, ergonomics
The razor can be classified as light: as a rule, such a device weighs 200+ grams, and Flyco FS356 – only 190. may not be very convenient. The absence of a floating head somewhat reduces the speed and quality of shaving, but we did not notice any serious ergonomic punctures.
Conclusions
Flyco FS356 is inferior to the top models of A-brands in terms of speed and quality of shaving, but it also costs several times less.
