Transition from primary to secondary school
Posted by Julia Dubrova Mar 14, 2014 in Parents | Comments Off on Transition from primary to secondary school disabled
Transition from primary to secondary school
Education in secondary school is more intense and requires more independence from students. Education in the fifth grade builds on the base of skills and knowledge gained in elementary school.
The transfer of students from elementary school to secondary school is rightly considered a crisis period . This transition is inevitably associated with a decrease in academic performance , at least temporarily. Students who are accustomed to certain routines in elementary school need time to adjust to the new pace and lifestyle.
Often the transition to secondary school coincides with the onset of physiological changes in children’s bodies. All this primarily affects the quality of academic performance (for example, an excellent student in elementary school suddenly starts getting fours and threes in the fifth grade). Although it also happens that a child who barely studied in the elementary grades for triples suddenly becomes a solid good student.
Can serious learning problems be avoided when going to secondary school? You can. But for this it is necessary to take into account all the factors that affect the quality of education in the fifth grade.
THE HABIT TO CONTROL
In elementary school, students are always in the field of view of the teacher, who controls the degree of their readiness for the next lesson, helps to resolve conflict situations with other teachers, is in close contact with parents. He carefully ensures that all the necessary information is recorded in the diary.
In secondary school, children are on their own. They have to move from classroom to classroom on their own, prepare for lessons, and very often they have to resolve issues with teachers on their own. And the fifth-graders meet with the class teacher only at the lessons he teaches, and at rare class hours. Naturally, parents cannot be aware of everything that happens at school.
It turns out that students who only yesterday were under the constant control of the teacher and parents, now must combine the educational and organizational aspects of school life.
Some children, due to their psychological characteristics, are not ready for such independence, they experience confusion, confuse and forget everything all the time, and cannot concentrate on their studies. Other children are so accustomed to constant supervision by adults that they are unable to organize their own school life on their own. All this, of course, leads to a decrease in academic performance.
FIRST PLACE — FORM
school.
He keeps coming to the same building at the same time, he is given homework, he is asked the same questions in class and graded.
But, on the other hand, classes now take place in a new classroom, and often in different classrooms. Names of unfamiliar subjects appeared in the schedule (botany, physics, history). And most importantly – each subject is taught by a new teacher.
Each teacher reacts differently to what is happening in the classroom and makes certain demands on the students. The child needs time to get used to and learn to behave in accordance with the requirements.
It should be remembered that the teacher must also get used to the class, tune in to work with it.
The period of adaptation to new rules and requirements can take a child from one month to a whole year . At this time, some decline in academic performance may be observed, since children are more likely to study the form than the content of educational activity .
START AGAIN
Like any crisis, the transition to high school has its upsides. The new educational situation makes it possible to overcome the stereotypes that have developed in elementary school.
The main feature of the transition to the fifth grade, as already mentioned, is the change of teachers. All subjects are now taught by different teachers. And although this creates certain difficulties, at the same time, the appearance of a new teacher is always a chance for the child to build his relationship with the subject in a new way.
It is in the fifth grade that the student gets the opportunity to start his academic life over again. A student with a well-established reputation as a C or D student can become a good student and even an excellent student.
It is the opportunity for a child to start school life over again that is the key positive aspect of the transition to secondary school. But the child can do this only with the help of others: teachers and parents.
CAUSES OF LACK OF PROGRESS
In addition to the considered specific reasons affecting the quality of progress in the fifth grade, there are others.
Physiological changes
The child begins to grow, becomes whiny, wants to sleep all the time. The consequence of these phenomena are absent-mindedness, weakening of memory, attention. Naturally, a child needs more time to adapt to such a situation.
Self-doubt
Once formed, self-doubt in one’s abilities “passes” with the child from class to class. The child, as it were, believes in advance that nothing will work out for him, and does not even dare to try. The reason for such self-doubt may be increased anxiety, pressure from loved ones, their excessive demands, fear of not living up to expectations.
Helping a child overcome these difficulties, feel successful and competent is possible only by understanding their causes.
Personal problems
A sharp deterioration in the quality of education may be due to the child’s personal problems: quarreled with a friend, fell in love, problems in the family, etc. Knowing what worries the child will help with patience and understanding to treat his poor progress. Sometimes it is enough to wait a while, and everything will go back to normal, and sometimes you need the support and help of a specialist – a psychologist.
Lack of ability
Rather, it is a question of the child’s lack of any outstanding abilities, which the parents hoped for. But in the fifth grade, new subjects appear, and the child has the opportunity to prove himself in completely new areas.
Lack of interest
A very common occurrence – a child does not study well because he is not interested. The reasons can be different: constant failures, bad relationships with a teacher or peers, personal problems. Sometimes a child says that he is not interested in studying because he does not understand how what they study at school can be useful to him in life.
In this case, parents can try to visually show the child the meaning of studying this or that subject. Life constantly poses tasks for a person that require the use of school knowledge: for example, without a multiplication table it is very difficult to calculate how much money will be needed to buy groceries. And knowledge of the alphabet helps to navigate in catalogs and encyclopedias.
Solving crossword puzzles requires certain knowledge at the level of the school curriculum (geography, history, literature). You can ask your child for help, together with him look for the answer in the textbooks.
When traveling with children or just getting from one end of the city to another, you can ask them to calculate the speed or distance traveled.
Your own garden or even flowers on the windowsill is a good practice in botany and even genetics (last year red and white carnations bloomed, and now pink ones have grown from the seeds collected from them for some reason).
A discussion of various movie tricks will demonstrate the need for knowledge of physical laws.
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
If you have concerns about your child’s behavior, try to meet and discuss this with your form teacher as soon as possible.
If any events occurred in the family that affected the psychological state of the child (divorce, departure of one of the parents on a long business trip, the birth of another child, etc.), inform the class teacher about it. It is changes in family life that often explain sudden changes in children’s behavior.
Show interest in school affairs, discuss difficult situations, look for a way out of conflicts together.
Help your child learn the names of new teachers, ask him to describe them, to note some special features.
Advise your child in difficult situations to seek help from the class teacher.
You should not immediately loosen control over your child’s learning activities if he got used to your control during the period of education in primary school.
