photos of peach species (green, red, fig, yellow and Potanin peach) and adaptability to growing conditions.
Nectarine, which is a variety of peach but has a smooth skin, is very popular on the world market. This fruit appeared as a result of a random mutation of the peach, and was later fixed by selection. In terms of its characteristics, external features and chemical composition of the fruit, this plant is very similar to the common peach.
Fruit nectarine: photo and description
The description of nectarine is similar to the description of a peach, the main difference is the absence of hairs on the skin. The color of a nectarine can be yellow, yellow-red or white, which is clearly seen in the following photo:
Due to the lack of a gun, the fruit looks very bright. The pulp is yellow, dense, low-juicy, sweet, easily separated from the stone. There is much less sugar in it than in peach pulp, but more vitamin A, C, iron, potassium, phosphorus. In some varieties of nectarine, the kernels of the stones are sweet in taste, therefore they are used similarly to almond kernels, since they are similar in taste and chemical composition.
Nectarine fruit is eaten raw, used for making compotes, jams and other desserts. Due to the high content of pectin in the pulp, this fruit is recognized as a prophylactic against cancerous tumors.
Mature nectarines spoil rather quickly, so they are exported and sold unripe. Store them in a dry place at room temperature. In the refrigerator, they quickly lose their taste. After removal from the tree, unlike other fruits, they do not ripen. A fully ripe peach nectarine can only be tasted in countries where it is grown.
When using it, remember that the seeds contain hydrocyanic acid, which is a strong poison, so peeled and canned fruits are considered the safest.
The history of the nectarine tree
The history of the nectarine tree dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, but scientists believe that the nectarine fruit was known even earlier. His homeland is called East Asia. In the 18th century scientists, in a detailed study of the plant, came to the conclusion that the peach mutation occurred at a time when an unfavorable climatic situation developed in the area where this crop grew, as a result of which smooth-skinned fruits began to appear on the trees. After some time, people began to graft the peach with nectarine branches and plant it from the seeds, after which the nectarine became widely known and spread in many countries with a warm climate. In Russia, frost-resistant varieties of the nectarine tree are grown. Young seedlings need warming for the winter.
Fig peach and species photo
Fig peach is an independent species, not related to figs. It is a low-growing tree, reaching up to 5 m in height. It has a wide spreading crown. Its branches are thick, powerful, the bark on the sunny side is reddish, on the shady side it is yellowish-green. The kidneys are large, pubescent.
Leaves are lanceolate, smooth, dark green above and grayish on the underside.
Flowers are rose-shaped, with strongly concave pale pink petals. Fruits are rounded, flattened, with depressed apex, weight 90-150 g. Skin slightly pubescent, medium thickness, dense, greenish-yellow hue. The pulp is juicy, fibrous, light yellow, very sweet, aromatic, with high taste qualities. Contains a small, flattened bone with a flat top and base. The fruits ripen in the second half of August. The plant is highly resistant to frost buds and buds.
Due to its unusual shape, the fig peach (photo above) is also called Chinese turnip, Chinese dished peach, Fergana peach. It does not occur in nature, it is a cultivated plant.
Currently, breeders have bred such varieties of fig peach as:

All varieties are low-calorie and nutritious. Even in canned form, they retain many vitamins and minerals. The disadvantage of varieties is the short shelf life of fruits, their rapid decay.
A variety of figs is a saucer red peach. This is a medium-sized tree with a spreading crown. Shoots are smooth, without lenticels, light green. The leaves are lanceolate, slightly pubescent. The fruit is flat dish-shaped, weighing 100-120 g, 7 cm in diameter, 3 cm thick. It is attached to a thick, short stalk. The skin is thin, pubescent, yellow with a red blush. The stone is small, flattened, rough, red-violet. The pulp is pale green, medium juicy, loose, sour-sweet in taste. The fruits ripen in late August – early September. Transportable. Fruiting is plentiful, annual, occurs in the 3rd year of the tree’s life.
Potanin’s and David’s peaches
Potanin’s peach is a short tree growing up to 2 m in height. Found wild in China. The bark of this tree has a reddish hue. The flowers are large, 2.5 cm in diameter, white or pink. The fruits are round, with a dry pericarp. Inside contains a dark brown, elongated bone with a striated surface. The fruits of Potanin are not of nutritional value, so the plant is not cultivated.
Peach David is a low-growing tree up to 3 m high. Its fruits are small, 2.5 cm in diameter, weighing up to 90 g, with a dry pericarp. The pulp is low-juicy, sweet and sour. Inside contains a small-meshed bone. This species tolerates drought well, frost-resistant. Used primarily for decorative purposes.
Species of peach: Gasuan and Peace peach
Gasuan peach is the species from which the common peach was obtained. Found exclusively in the wild in China. Not cultivated. It is a medium-sized tree or shrub 3-4 m high. During flowering, it looks very impressive, since its crown during this period is abundantly dotted with small white and pink flowers. The fruits are round, small, yellowish, with white, harsh flesh. Taste qualities of fruits are low. This species is characterized by high frost resistance, not susceptible to diseases. On its basis, valuable peach varieties are bred, to which the Gasuan passes on its unpretentiousness and resistance to various growing conditions.
Peace peach is an oriental wild species. This is a tall tree, reaching 8 m. The fruits are spherical, with a small smooth bone. Taste quality is low.
Yellow, red and green types of peaches are distinguished by the color of the skin and flesh. Yellows have a uniform golden or yellowish-pink skin color. The peel of reds is bright saturated or pale pink, depending on the variety. The skin of green peaches can range in color from light green to greenish cream with a pink blush. The rich green color of the fruit indicates its immaturity.

Sliced peaches | 1.5 cups |
Cream cheese | 60 g |
Sweeter | 0.5 cups | 1 leaf |
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Cover a baking sheet with parchment or baking paper and lay out the puff pastry rolled out into a layer of 20×25. When rolling out, you need to make small sides of 2 cm on each side. Bake the crust for 20 minutes until golden brown.
After the base of the pie is ready, take it out of the oven and let it cool down. For cream mix cheese, sour cream and sugar. Cover the dough with the mixture and put the chopped peaches on top.
How to choose and store peaches
When choosing peaches, pay attention to the skin color. It should not be dark or vice versa too dull. It is important to taste the fruit for softness. Unripe fruits can spoil the dish or be bad for health.
Peach must be washed before eating. It is better to do this under warm water and at least 1-2 minutes. In the off-season, the fruits are treated with special means that allow the fruits to be stored longer. This is a plus for producers, but a minus for those who will eat peaches.
Fruit can be stored at room temperature after purchase. Putting peaches in the refrigerator will keep them much longer. For storage, choose paper bags rather than plastic bags.
Popular Questions and Answers
Olga Shestakova, practicing dietitian, gastroenterologist, teacher of dietetics at the St. Petersburg beauty school “Ekol” and a full-time nutritionist at AgroAudit OJSC, answers popular questions.
How many peaches can you eat per day?
As for the norm, here we are limited both by the total caloric content of the diet, and by the content in peaches of such a type of simple sugar as fructose. Absorption of fructose in the human small intestine is limited. Most of us can absorb about 15 grams of pure fructose per day (this amount can be obtained from 500-600 grams of sweet peaches). Excess fructose, on the other hand, is quickly absorbed by the bacteria that live in the large intestine and can cause problems such as increased gas production, bloating, discomfort along the intestines, and also cause significant relaxation of the stool.
As with any other food eaten in excess of the daily calorie intake, an excess of peaches in the diet will lead to weight gain. That is why they are recommended to be limited to people with obesity and diabetes.
When does peach season start?
In our country and in Turkey, for example, the peach season is different. If we are talking about the season of Russian peaches, then it begins in late July-early August. Peach fruits from abroad begin to ripen in May and are sold until the end of summer.
