What are Tier 2 Vocabulary Words?

Have you found yourself asking, “What is a tier 2 vocabulary word?” If so, then I’ve got you covered in this blog post because we’ll be discussing tier 2 vocabulary words as well as tier 1 words and tier 3 words.

Tier 2 words are words that are high-frequency words that are frequently seen in an academic setting across multiple different subjects.

They are words that are used by native speakers but are more difficult words which makes them words that need to be explicitly taught and learned.

Tier 2 words aren’t used in spoken language as frequently as tier 1 words and therefore can be more challenging to learn for students.

    Examples of Tier 2 Words

For example, the words benefit, annual, and afford are all tier 2 words.

What are Tier 1 Vocabulary Words?

On the other hand tier 1 words are extremely common words, such as nouns and verbs that require minimal or no explicit teaching of their meanings.

These basic words are words that most native speakers can acquire simply through their daily experiences, such as reading or an everyday conversation with others.

These high-frequency words are typically root words with no prefix or suffix making their meanings very basic.

    Examples of Tier 1 Words

For example, the words red, help, and look are all tier 1 words.

What are Tier 3 Vocabulary Words?

Lastly, tier 3 words are low-frequency words that are used in specific domains.

A specific domain or subject-specific area includes subjects in school, occupations, hobbies, etc.

Tier 3 words are central to a specific subject and should be taught within the context of that subject or domain.

    Examples of Tier 3 Words

For example, the words algorithm and absolute value are all in the math content areas for tier 3 words.

    Vocabulary Instruction

When thinking about vocabulary development and what academic vocabulary words to teach your students focusing on tier 2 words is a great place to start.

With tier 1 words being common sight words that are frequently learned through daily experiences and with tier 3 words being low-frequency words that are domain specific it would be best to focus on tier 2 words.

Since tier 2 words are still considered high-frequency words unlike tier 3 words and need explicit instruction unlike tier 1 words it makes them the perfect set of academic words to focus on when thinking about which vocabulary words to teach this school year.

Focusing on tier 2 words is also a great idea for English language learners since these words are frequently used across multiple school subjects and different contexts.

    Lesson Plans

Again when it comes to vocabulary direct instruction it’s important to focus on the notion of tiers.

The different tiers of words help you decide which type of words to focus on.

There a lot of opportunities to learn tier 1 words simply through conversation and daily life making them less important to focus on and with tier 3 words for more mature language users and used in a specific field of study they are low-frequency words and less important to focus on as well.

That leaves us with tier 2 words as our key words to be focusing on to get our biggest bang for our buck.

Learning new words can be fun! This lesson will take major vocabulary words from several subjects and explore them so that 6th grade students can get a better understanding of some new and exciting terms.

    Word Power!

Why might a student want to study vocabulary? Well, we study vocabulary, or the words we use, in order to be more specific in our communication. When writing or speaking, we can use specific vocabulary in order to get the message across with a clearer understanding.

For example, telling someone that you are happy can mean so many things. What if you were more specific and said you were ‘exuberant’ or ‘elated’ or ‘victorious?’ Described below are some words that you may find useful.

    Language Arts Terms

    • Harry Potter was quite a memorable protagonist.

Antagonist – a character who opposes the protagonist

Memoir – a piece of writing about the author’s own experiences

    • Barack Obama’s memoir is an inspiring story about his life.

Personification – giving human-like characteristics to nonhuman objects

    • Saying ‘the sun smiled as it awoke in the morning’ is an example of personification.

    • She loved listening to her grandfather tell anecdotes from his childhood.
Onomatopoeia is using sound to make words.

    The Basic Spelling Vocabulary List

By: Steve Graham, Karen R. Harris, Connie Loynachan

This list was created to help teachers know which spelling words should be taught to kids in grades 1–5. The list contains 850 words that account for 80 percent of the words children use in their writing — the ones they need to be able to spell correctly.

This list was devised to help educators know which spelling words should be taught to children. The list contains 850 words that account for 80 percent of the words children use in their writing — the ones they need to be able to spell correctly.

Mastering this relatively small corpus of words yields a high rate of return. For example, the most common 1,000 words are used 13 times more frequently than the next most common 1,000 words. It also provides teachers flexibility in planning spelling instruction, providing an opportunity to give children the “basics” while supplementing with other spelling words germane to classroom activities.

Grade level for each word was determined based upon difficulty, pattern of occurrence in children’s writing across grades, and grade placement on current vocabulary lists and spelling materials.

Words that children have difficulty spelling correctly are marked with an asterisk.

How do we find out about the origin of original Russian and borrowed words? First of all, from various dictionaries. The main dictionary, which contains information about the history of individual words, is called etymological. Also, an explanatory dictionary can provide us with assistance in establishing the origin of a word. It should pay attention to the presence of a foreign spelling of the word. For example: cash desk – [ital. cassa ].

Let’s take a look at the etymological online dictionary of the Russian language by Semyonov A. V. and read the dictionary entry about the word “birch”.

    Birch:

    “Old Slavic – brz’n (April).

    Common Slavic – berza (birch).

    Indo-European – bhereg- (light, whitening).

The word birch came from the Old Russian language, where the noun birch and the adjective birch are mentioned in monuments of the 12th century. Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic, where “bruz” – April goes back to the common Slavic berza and further – to the Indo-European root bhereg-, expressing the concept of white, light, brilliant.

It is obvious that the ancient name of the birch arose due to the color of its bark, probably the older meaning is “a tree with a light, whitening bark”.

    Related are:

    Ukrainian – birch.

    Slovenian – breza (birch).

    Derivative: birch

    Note:

Old Church Slavonic – referring to the literary and written culture of the Slavs of the era.

Indo-European is the common name for a vast group of modern and ancient related languages of Asia and Europe, to which the languages \u200b\u200bof Indian, Iranian, Greek, Slavic, Baltic, Germanic, Celtic, Romance and some others belong.

In some cases, there is a coincidence of the original Russian and a borrowed word. For example, the word marriage is Russian in the meaning of marriage, and in the meaning of low-quality products it came from German.

Is it really necessary to borrow words from other languages? This question is still considered controversial by scientists. If it is possible to use a Russian word, there is no need to replace it with a foreign language. So, it is not always worth saying consensus instead of agreement, presentation – instead of presentation , sociable – instead of sociable, destructive – instead of destructive .

At the beginning of the 18th century, there was a society in St. Petersburg that fought against borrowing. It was headed by A. S. Shishkov. His like-minded people suggested replacing foreign words with Russian ones, but it turned out ridiculous: fountain – water cannon; diamonds sparkling; billiards – ball; galoshes – wet shoes.

Contemporaries (especially young people), joking with Shishkov, came up with the following phrase: “ A good place is walking along the abyss from a disgrace to the lists “. This phrase consists of Russian words, but it is more understandable to us with foreign words: “ The dandy is walking along the boulevard from the theater to the circus. So, after all, it is impossible to do without borrowed words.

The Russian language is very hospitable. He gladly accepts “foreign” words.

Do other languages borrow words from Russian?

Yes. There are Russian words that are used in many countries, they have become international. For example , matryoshka, satellite, borscht, samovar, perestroika, publicity, dacha, grandmother.

Our language is open to the world. We are ready to accept foreign words and share our own.
