Kindergarten Summer School can be loads of fun! Whether you are tutoring, teaching summer school or day camps, or helping young students, here are some fun activities to do with kids.

Academic Skills in Kindergarten

A summer school program is typically offered through a school district to offer support with academic skills. Certified staff members help ready kids for the next school year, reviewing reading skills, math skills, social skills, reading skills, and literacy skills.

Continuous improvement to avoid the summer slide is important for a child’s academic success.

As a kindergarten teacher, I would determine eligible students for Summer learning programs based on their skills in the core subjects. Below is a list of important skills often found in a regular school year kindergarten program.

  • Sight Words (high frequency words)
  • Kindergarten Math Skills (number recognition, number writing, counting, adding, subtracting)
  • Letter Sounds (Identifying alphabet letters, producing their sounds, and beginning/middle/end sounds of words)
  • Concepts of Print (Building words, reading, and writing left to right, top to bottom, spacing, etc)
  • Writing (letter formation, spacing, writing a complete sentence)
  • Reading fluency (In elementary schools, fluency is referencing the kids speed, expression, and accuracy when reading)
  • Social emotional learning
  • Physical education

Kindergarten Literacy Skills

Sight Words

Help the kids avoid the summer slide by building sight word recognition, and have them ready to start next year as a strong reader. Within each grade level, the number of sight words they are expected to know increases. Please refer to your local school district programs for additional information on their English language development standards.

Here is a list of ways you can practice sight words with your kids over summer break:

  • Popsicle stick sight word games
  • Shaving Cream sight words
  • Sight Word hunts in old magazines
  • Play a game of war using sight word cards
  • Make sight words out of playdoh
  • Build sight words out of legos
  • Kindergarten sight word printable worksheets

Beginning Sounds

Along with keeping the kiddos engaged with reading poems, math, sight word activities, and crafts, you can also use these beginning sounds Summer themed task cards to reinforce letter-sound correspondence. It’s very important the kids don’t lose this fundamental skill over the summer.  They are perfect for a fun, small group, literacy center.

These task cards are included in the Summer Bundle

Concepts of Print

As younger children get into the swing of Summer, we need to remember to reinforce the basics of kindergarten, such as concepts of print.

A simple and fun way to practice concepts of print are with Making Words activities.  This Ocean themed Making Words resource has everything you need to build early writing skills and vocabulary. It, too, is included in the Kindergarten Summer School Bundle.

Reading Fluency

Sometimes it’s difficult to get the kids to enjoy reading.  They often get frustrated, overwhelmed, and don’t enjoy reading.  This is heartbreaking as a parent and as a teacher.  To help keep reading fun, I always use poetry.

Poems are a wonderful tool to build reading fluency, vocabulary, and language skills.  You’ll get three fun poems included in your kindergarten summer school bundle.

Math Skills for Kindergarten Summer School

Teaching kindergarten math is so much fun! You get to watch the early childhood aged kids go from barely understanding number sequence from 1-10, to becoming fluent in basic addition and subtraction within 20.

If the kids are having a difficult time learning new skills in math, I suggest additional supports to be offered throughout the summer session.

A strong math foundation happens in preschool. If your students did not attend a summer preschool program, and struggled in kindergarten, it’s important to offer as much support as possible before moving up to first grade.

A recent study shows “…the preschool years can make a major contribution to closing the gap in opportunity to learn mathematical ideas” (Clements, Fuson, and Sarama)

90,000 School – 2021 in the Krasnoyarsk Territory

On June 17-18, in the city of Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Summer School “I am inspired by art” was held, organized by the Krasnoyarsk Regional Institute for Advanced Studies in conjunction with the ANO DPO “National Institute for the Quality of Education” as part of the project “Developing the quality of preschool education using the tools of the MKDO at the educational platform “Inspiration”.

The summer school was dedicated to creativity and art in kindergarten. The main idea was that the teacher not only owns the methods and technologies, but also interacts with the child every moment with his entire multifaceted personality, and the development of the child is possible only with the adult who himself strives to develop.

The program of the Summer School included unusual and bright events:

Invited to the Summer School:

  • Lidia Vasilievna Svirskaya, Ph.D. ped. Sci., Associate Professor of Additional Professional Education at the Novgorod Institute for the Development of Education, co-author of the educational program for preschool education “Inspiration” and technology “Children’s Council”;

  • Alexei Mikhailovich Lelchuk, artist, sculptor, teacher, enthusiastically engaged in intuitive sculpture with preschoolers and adults;

  • and many others.

The summer school provided an opportunity for representatives of network platforms implementing the BEP of the DO “Inspiration” to meet like-minded colleagues, adopt innovative experience and share their ideas.

Below is a review from a Summer School participant.

SUMMER SCHOOL IN ONE BREATH…

In the same breath, we lived a two-day intensive, immersed ourselves in the atmosphere of creativity and art. We were inspired by various creative people, including Lidia Svirskaya, co-author of the Inspiration program, and artist Alexei Lelchuk.

The venue for the Summer School was a recreation center in a picturesque place on the banks of the Yenisei River in a pine forest. This magical corner was the best way to immerse yourself in the theme of the Summer School – “I am inspired by art.”

The Adult Council opened the School – a special ritual of inspired teachers. As Lydia Vasilievna Svirskaya said: “You and I are like the Tribal Council, which thinks where to lead the people …” And indeed, at the Council it was found out that all of us inspired teachers are united by the same ideas, freedom of spirit, movement forward, faith in the future of Russian preschool education. The whole Summer School is a living communication, self-understanding, faith in one’s abilities.

On the first day, creative workshops were opened for the participants: “Intuitive Clay Sculpture” with Alexei Lelchuk, “Playback Theater” with Yulia Korotkova, “I draw? I’m drawing!” with Varvara Gorodilova. Working with clay, telling stories from childhood and playing them with colleagues, painting with pastels and watercolors – this is something magical!

In the evening, as a friendly company, we danced under the guidance of the teachers of the Calypso dance theater. The day ended at the Film Club with a film screening and discussion.

The morning of the second day began with the “Different” exercise. The question of the participants: “What is it possible?” “You can, colleagues!” A little tired, but inspired, we rush to the Adult Council: everyone is overwhelmed with emotions, everyone is eager to speak out, share their feelings, experiences, faith in their own strength.

Everything about the abilities of preschool children was discussed at a seminar with Lidia Vasilievna Svirskaya. And then creativity: Evgenia Fast immersed us in a musical living room with Carl Orff; Elena Venina organized a song flash mob. We completed the work of creative workshops with a drawing concert. Have you ever drawn Mozart? And we were painting!

Final collection – opinions, statements, discussions, planning. The main thing that the Summer School has given us is understanding ourselves, our abilities and possibilities! Understanding about understanding a child! Choosing creative workshops, I often heard from colleagues: “Yes, I can’t draw, sculpt, sing …”, “I was told in kindergarten that this was not mine …”. Masters breathed into us the confidence with which we will come to kindergartens, and which will help us to see the abilities of each child and support them.

Thanks to the organizers, all the masters and participants for the atmosphere, live communication, immersion, self-confidence! The summer school is about us teachers, an opportunity to look at ourselves differently, to express what worries or pleases, and not be afraid of evaluative opinions!
