“I didn’t want to be a Sunday dad.” The story of a Gomel resident who alone brings up two daughters

Today the Gelfer family is happy together. Seven-year-old Margarita and her five-year-old sister Eva finally live under the same roof with their father and even began to go to the same kindergarten. But it was not always so, in order to get the legal right to be a dad for his daughters, Eugene had to go through many trials. And the main one is human stereotypes. It turns out that there are still many people around who believe that a dad cannot raise two daughters alone.

When he and his wife divorced, Evgeny was only 23 years old, their eldest daughter Margarita was two, and their youngest Eva was six months old. The father immediately decided that he did not want to be a “Sunday dad” and had the same right to his children as their mother. We calmly discussed everything with my wife and made a decision – Margarita will stay with her for now, and Eva will live with her father.

The parents supported their son’s decision, but some acquaintances, and even strangers who had to meet during the preparation of all the necessary documents, often looked askance. How, they say, so, the child will live alone with dad, and even a girl.

“You can’t do it”, “why do you need it”, “they need maternal care”, which Eugene never heard, even the care workers looked at him with suspicion at first. Where does this passion for children come from?

– If my mother was an alcoholic, for example, everything is clear here. And so. It was unusual for them that prosperous parents suddenly share children. But then, when they delved into the situation, they agreed with our decision, – Eugene shares the details.

And when the ex-wife was invited to work abroad, it was also decided to leave the elder Margarita in Belarus with her father. The fact is that the girl has health problems, she has a third disability group, and it would be dangerous to take her to a foreign country.

– Margarita was born six months old, with a heart defect and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, she spent half a year in intensive care on artificial lung ventilation. Now every day she needs to take special medications, regularly travel to Minsk for examinations. In the future, it may be possible to have a heart operation, and she will get rid of the pathology. But so far this is impossible due to the peculiarities of the structure of the surrounding organs, – explains Eugene.

In general, we decided not to take risks, because it is not clear how to organize proper medical supervision for her in an unfamiliar country.

– The ex-wife resisted at first, but finally agreed. Now we maintain good relations. She lives and works abroad, we often call each other by video link, we communicate. When he arrives, see you. She certainly loves girls, but we decided for ourselves like this. What would be better if they would always live with me. I think it’s normal just like if the children in the event of a divorce remain with their mother. It’s just that our society hasn’t gotten used to this yet,” Evgeny shares his sore point.

While we are talking, Margarita and Eva now and then run up to dad to sit on the pens. Got bored during the day. Both go to the same kindergarten, but if Eva went there because of her age, then seven-year-old Margarita could not attend the kindergarten due to illness and found out what it is only this year.

Margarita is quiet and closed, she treats strangers with caution, it is difficult to make contact. “My little introvert,” her dad affectionately calls her. Eva, on the contrary, is fighting, in the kindergarten she protects her older sister and takes care of her.

– Eva used to go to a group where there were only three girls and the rest were boys. And when they were transferred to another, sanatorium, she behaved like a boy for a long time, she was not friends with the girls. But now she has adapted. And with my sister, they quickly became as one, they play together, it happens, and I mess with them a little. But in general, I like everything to be in order, in the apartment after the games you definitely need to clean up, and not leave it for later. And I try to make my daughters develop, I work with them every day.

Margarita and Eva, for example, don’t have mobile phones, although many of them even go to the garden with them at their age.

– Of course they know what it is. But they don’t play games on the phone at all and don’t watch videos there. Eva asks for a cell phone only to take a picture with it. They also speak Viber with their mother, grandparents. And cartoons, especially good ones, we watch on TV! We love Pixar animation and Disney animation, programs about animals on National Geographic, – Eugene smiles.

Evgeny himself is ready to give his daughters as much love and care as he can. And he has plenty in stock. He says that now he has no other priorities, except for the family. He even gets offended a little when he hears from everywhere about unconditional maternal love.

– I have the same unconditional. I took care of my girls from birth, just like their mother, swaddled, changed diapers, washed, helped with cleaning, washing. I have always been responsible, I became a father early and did not hesitate for a minute when I made the decision to go to work at a factory instead of continuing my studies at a university. I had to support a family. When my wife and I broke up, after the birth of our youngest daughter, I just sat alone in an empty apartment and did not know what to do next. I wanted to hear the laughter of my daughters, their cheerful fuss nearby.

Nevertheless, Eugene has to deal with stereotypes everywhere.

– Before, when my daughters were smaller, I often heard the phrase: “Where is your mother?” For some reason, it is considered normal if a dad came to the clinic with a big child, but if he came alone with a baby, this already raises questions and even some kind of disapproval.

Once I had to go to a children’s hospital with one of my daughters, and the doctor there raised her eyebrows in surprise and asked: “And what do you want to do with you, I have only mothers in the ward! They are breastfeeding children there, and in general … ”.

“But I won’t look, I’ll turn my back to the wall,” Evgeny tried to joke then, but, of course, it’s not funny in such a situation. There are no separate wards for dads with small children in hospitals. Whatever you want, then do it.

But the gynecologist was most surprised when a man came to see her with a little daughter.

– It seemed to me that she was even embarrassed. But it’s not easy for me either. Women, for example, know how everything is arranged there and how the procedures are carried out, because they themselves have been faced with this since childhood. And I went to this office for the first time in my life. I had to ask the doctor everything, but I sort of figured it out. Now there are fewer questions!

Eugene constantly teaches his daughters that they can share everything with their dad, and there can be no embarrassing or uncomfortable topics here.

In the near future, Margarita is going to school next year.

– Although they are different in age, Eva and she will go to the first grade together. Due to illness, the eldest daughter went to kindergarten late, and with school, I have a presentiment, maybe not everything is simple. I will seek permission from the medical commission, because sitting at home is not a way out of the situation. Margarita needs to socialize, communicate with other children, this is also important for her development.

The main dream, but also the most sore point for the 28-year-old father, is to buy his own apartment. The family is on a preferential line, since the eldest daughter has a disability, but so far the options that have been offered are too unaffordable.

– It makes no sense to buy a one-room apartment, the girls will grow up soon, and they will need a separate room, and the options with two- and three-room apartments are sky-high. I calculated that I would have to pay a total of about 2 thousand per month. In this regard, families with many children benefit, although we have the same benefits as they do. But since the subsidized area of housing is calculated depending on the number of family members, housing is much cheaper for them.

For the time being, the Gelfer family lives in a rented apartment, fortunately, the parents are not far away either. If necessary, help out.

– Although I am generally not a supporter of asking someone for help with or without reason. If it’s really necessary, I can, otherwise their grandparents decide for themselves when they want to visit or take them in.

Evgeny has been working at one of the Gomel enterprises for about nine years. Every day in the morning he takes his daughters by car to the garden, then he goes to work, and in the evening he picks him up, and they go home to cook dinner.

– Everything is with us, like with other people. Only you have to buy a whole chicken, because girls have different tastes – one loves legs, the other thighs, and I get the breast, their dad jokes. – At one time we became addicted to steamed meat, then we got fed up, we come up with something else. On weekends we can bake an apple pie. I myself try to adhere to proper nutrition, because there are problems with the stomach, and I teach girls to do this. For example, they eat all kinds of cereals from me.
