How to Get the Gunk out Scissors-Free

Photo by Brian Powell / Stocksy United

Like flies to flypaper, at some point gunk will get stuck in your child’s hair. While the web is full of gunk-removal ideas that include products like Goo Gone®, nail polish remover, or WD-40®, there are plenty of safe, non-toxic solutions out there, too. Here are the gunk-be-gone tips you need to know about.

How to Get Gum out of Hair

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises not giving chewing gum to children until they’re able to understand they shouldn’t swallow it—typically around age five. But that doesn’t mean your kid won’t end up with somebody else’s wad of gum in their hair. Luckily, the American Academy of Dermatology has a fast, easy fix that doesn’t require an impromptu haircut:

  1. Get a jar of creamy peanut butter or vegetable oil (such as olive oil), and cover the gum completely using your fingers or an old toothbrush. The oils make the gum base stiffer and less sticky.
  2. Wait a few minutes to allow the product to work.
  3. Remove the gum and wash your child’s hair as normal.

How to Get Play Dough out of Hair

Removing everyone’s favorite molding clay from your child’s tresses is super simple and painless. We like this variation from eHow:

  1. Comb the hair out until you get to the play dough. Pour some hot water into a bowl and add a little dish soap. Soak a washcloth in the hot, soapy water and then use it to grasp the clay.
  2. Roll the play dough with the washcloth like you’re massaging it until you see the dough beginning to dissolve. Rinse the washcloth out and repeat until you think all the dough is gone. Comb the hair to confirm it’s clear.
  3. Shampoo the soap out of the hair and follow with conditioner, as soap tends to have a drying effect.

P.S. Looking for a great homemade play dough recipe? We’ve got 3!

How to Get Silly Putty® out of Hair

This classic, stretchy, bouncy plaything is also a classic hair magnet. Crayola, who makes it, even has instructions for getting it out: Work the area with a generous amount of conditioner and then gently comb through the hair, starting from the bottom of the putty. Add more conditioner and keep combing until it’s all out. Wash hair normally.

How to Get Glue out of Hair

See above! This is the exact same process you would follow for white glue, like Elmer’s® glue.

How to Get Sap out of Hair

Did the kids bring home some sticky, gooey sap as a memento from your hike? Solutions abound! You can use hand sanitizer or dish soap for this one (rub into the affected area and then rinse), or reach for that trusty peanut butter or vegetable oil: Rub them into the hair, use a hair dryer to heat/soften the sap, and comb it out. Mayo should also do the trick—just let it sit for a few minutes. Shampoo and rinse hair, and the kids will be set for some more tree hugging.

How to Get Flubber out of Hair (a.k.a. Gak)

Slippery, slimy, oozy, and jiggly flubber is a ton of fun for kids (we recommend this recipe from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry). But once it has cemented itself to hair, it’s a nightmare. Happily, all you need is cheap white vinegar. Plop your kid in the bathtub—give them a washcloth to cover their eyes if necessary—and pour vinegar over the flubber. (Note that vinegar will make cuts sting!) The flubber will start to dissolve and drip off. Rinse and repeat until clear.

BTW, white vinegar has a zillion other uses, from cleaning floors to deodorizing dish towels, and makes all these other household tasks more awesome.

Have you ever tried a clay hair wash? There are many shampoos and cg approved products which deal with build up on your hair but they can be quite harsh. In this post we will look at the Bentonite Clay Hair Wash Hair Do’s and Dont’s for the curly girl method.

Part of the ethos behind the wavy and curly girl method is the use of natural ingredients so if you are looking for a natural degreaser for your scalp and thats kind for your hair then a Bentonite clay hair wash treatment can be a way to detox your hair if have product build-up.

Before you start a Bentonite clay warning!

I am a firm believer of only writing about what I know and trying out everything I suggest. So I chose to try the bentonite clay on the risk that it may dry my hair out but also to get a good view of what is does to hair and scalp. This is my own personal opinion and if you wish to use bentonite clay it is important to know your own hair type.

What is Bentonite Clay?

Bentonite clay is an absorbent old clay that usually forms from volcanic ash it is also known as Montmorillonite clay or Fullers earth. Montmorillonite is a nutrient-rich clay and is effective at balancing ph levels on the skin and inside the body. It has a so many uses in the health and beauty world and and is even used in some moisturisers to treat contact dermatitis.

Can you use Bentonite Clay on High Porosity or Porous Hair?

Although bentonite clay has some benefits for most hair types it can have harsh effects on others. Bentonite can strip and absorb access water like a sponge out of porous hair so it is advisable not to use it on Porous hair. It is imperative you know your hair type before using clay products as it can dehydrate your hair very quickly. You may find you want to apply it to the scalp only and leave the length out.

Do I have porous hair?

Low porosity hair will not absorb water quickly in the shower, will feel smooth can be greasy or shiny but can also lack moisture and feel dry as cuticles are tightly shut.

High porosity hair is often dry absorbs water quickly in the shower, may be colour treated, dry ends, frizzy and lacks shine as the cuticles are open and often damaged.

Should I do a Bentonite clay wash?

I decided to write this post as I felt misinformed on the use of bentonite clay for certain hair types. Hence why I started with the bad news first. If you are a wavy with high porosity it will not work for you, if however you have coils or have afro hair that is low porosity it may be the perfect remedy.

Bentonite clay removes toxins it does not remove hard minerals it is a mineral it self. It is also a dehydrator and although not as strong as Sodium Bentonite Calcium bentonite will absorb a third of what sodium bentonite will.

There has been no scientific evidence to support that bentonite clay is beneficial to your hair. Having said that there are many people who use bentonite clay on a regular basis with good results.

However it is not suitable for everybody’s hair!

How does Bentonite clay clean hair?

Bentonite cleanses hair by absorbing negatively charge toxins resulting in a clean slate. It acts somewhat like a clarifying shampoo by removing oil dirt and greasy residues including build up from products.

See my easy Co washing and clarifying guide here

What are the Benefits of Clay for Natural Hair?

Using Bentonite clay can be very beneficial for the hair and scalp particularly if you are doing the curly girl method. Here is what Bentonite clay is said to do .

  • It can remove impurities from hair and scalp. As the clay is negatively charged it attracts positively charged product build-up and toxins pretty much like a magnet. Which results in thoroughly cleansed hair.
  • Enhances Shine as it removes product build-up which results in shiny hair
  • A percentage of Bentonite Clay has antibacterial Properties which can kill bacteria, viruses, and fungus from the scalp and hair. This can ease symptoms of  psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.
  • It can help Define Curls  by helping to clump curls together.
  • said to make hair softer and less frizzy
  • It can encourage hair growth with its  different natural minerals

The best way to use Bentonite clay is to make a clay mask to pop on your hair.

How to Use Clay on Naturally curly Hair

The easiet method to use it is to make a clay mask wash with water. You can add extras to it such as Apple cider vinegar ( ACV) and essential oils such as lavender if you wish. Using the apple cider vinegar will also lower the ph level making it less alkaline and more in line with your hairs natural ph.

How do you make a hair mask for curly hair?

It is really easy and super quick to make and use clay hair wash. You can purchase clay here check the sizes of the pots and bags some you get much more for your money

  • Use a wooden or plastic bowl and spoon when you’re making your clay mixture as metal can activate the clay  which can reduce the effects on your hair and skin.  Also do not expose metal rings wear gloves if necessary.
  • Use 1 – 2 tbsp of bentonite clay
  • 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar.
  • mix and add water to reach a creamy consistency

How to do a Clay Hair wash

  • Wet Hair and comb ( or brush through with a wet brush )
  • apply to scalp, mid lengths
  • leave on for 10 minutes
  • rinse in warm water
  • finish with deep conditioner or a protein treatment

The clay is a strong natural ingredient so it should not be left on too long as it can strip natural oils and protein from your hair too. Experiment with how long you leave it on for, usually around 10 minutes.

What do you put on your Hair after Bentonite Clay?

Hair will need to be followed up with a deep conditioning treatment. If your hair doesn’t like to be over moisturised you may benefit from doing a very Light rice water rinse after your conditioner or use a protein conditioner. Rinse really well in warm water. You should not need to shampoo your hair after your treatment just condition and style as usual.

What should I do if bentonite clay ruins my Hair?

First up do not panic! it has not ruined your hair it just needs removing and hydrating properly. If your hair feels heavy you have not removed the bentonite correctly or you have porous hair and it has been absorbed in to the porous cuticle and the clay has dried it out.

Follow these steps to rehydrate your hair after a Bentonite clay wash.

Step 1

Rinse again in warm water to open the cuticle and release the particles. ( not cold! This closes the cuticle  ) I advise washing your hair over a sink with the plug in so that you can see that the water is running clear. Any cloudy water means there is still clay in the hair.

Step 2

Access the situation. Does the hair feels dry, heavy or still loaded? If your hair feels sticky after this then there is still clay in the hair so repeat  the above rinse again.

If the hair feels heavy or loaded move to step 3. Or if it just feels dry and tangled move to step 4

Step 3

If your hair still feels like this then you may need to do a shampoo ( such as a final wash shampoo- no silicone but sulphate) to remove any extra minerals. Do not worry it can not do any more drying out.

Step 4

Deep condition! Use a moisturising deep conditioner to plump out those cuticles again. Leave on for approximately 30 minutes. If you feel like you need a little extra slip apply a conditioner after to comb through.

Step 5

Rice rinse. Bentonite clay is so good at absorbing everything including protein you may need to add back some protein. Either do a rice protein treatment in place of step 4 or just a light rice rinse over your conditioner to smooth cuticles.

My preferred way is a quick last minute rinse with cool rice water to smooth the cuticles.

Step 6

Aftercare use a leave in conditioner and style as usual if your hair does not still feel recovered revert to  Co washing on the next washes and deep treatment until your hair feels moisturised.

Bentonite Clay After Storage.

Treat bentonite clay as you would any fresh ingredients for up to 3 days in the fridge or alternatively use the rest as a facemask!

Thank you for reading my Bentonite Clay Hair Wash Do’s and Dont’s

Disclaimer I decided to write this post as I felt I was misinformed by lots of other posts on the subject not detailing the effects it can have on other hair types.  All thoughts and opinions are my own and received from detailed experience.

This is my own personal opinion and if people wish to use bentonite it is important to know your own hair type

How to wash the bryolin from the hair? 3 working methods: Grease for hair

There comes a time in every man’s life when he faces a choice:

Buy Water-based pomade or buy oil-based pomade

In other words, buy styling clay or buy hair styling clay ?

Clay has two important advantages over bryolin: it is easily washed out of the hair with shampoo and the hair looks matte, while the clay has a strong hold. In a word, the ideal solution if you need an “office” styling tool for every day. Indeed, an extremely comfortable, versatile and practical product.

However, clay does not have one thing: a centuries-old history of existence.

If you say: “hair styling clay” – there will be no associations with either Elvis, or Brando, or McQueen, or James Bond, or Guy Ritchie films, or Rock culture, or English style.

When a person hears the word “grease” – the first thing that comes to mind is a cool fixation in any weather and the appearance of hair like actors at the Oscars, and the second thing that comes to mind:

Like to wash the bryolin from the hair?

An experienced greaser (a person who prefers oil-based styling products) will answer:

0009?

Indeed, many who use hair oil to style their hair prefer not to wash off the styling agent for several days, or even weeks.

And what about walking dirty? No, why not. The idea is to take a shower, thoroughly wash the body and hair, but do not try to remove all the grease from the hair. What do we get with this approach?

Easy to style – After showering, comb your hair, blow-dry if needed, and add more lube if needed. The advantage of this approach is that after three days of such wearing of briolin on the hair, it will be washed off from the hair much easier and faster.

But you still want to wash off the Grease in the evening of the same day you applied it in the morning?

Then sit down comfortably!

1st method. Use prestyling

After washing and getting rid of excess moisture on your hair with a towel, do not rush to pounce on the bryolin or grab the handle of the hair dryer – first open a jar of prestyling.

Prestyling can be any water-based styling product, such as

Bradato hair styling clay or special pre-styling product for hair styling.

Take a small amount of the product, apply it directly to wet hair, shape your hair with a comb and dry your hair with a hair dryer, shaping your hair – you’re done!

Only after this procedure, apply briolin to the hair, directly on top of the pre-styling – that’s what it is called, because it is used before applying the main product.

What do you get?

1). The ease of shaping the hairstyle during blow-drying – each strand will do exactly what you want, they will all lie down and take the desired pose under your pressure!

2). Now you can easily wash off hair styling grease !

2nd method. Rub shampoo into dry hair and buy hair conditioner on the palm of your hand is such an amount of shampoo that a puddle the size of a 5-ruble coin forms. After, start rubbing the shampoo into dry hair, trying to lather it.

Don’t be upset if things don’t work out – everything is going according to plan. Dampen your palms with water and try lathering your hair again. Now, add a little more shampoo and continue massaging your head. Moisten hair with additional water, trying to lather them.

Thus, repeat the procedure of adding shampoo and wetting the hair with water 2-3 more times, repeating until a slightly satisfactory lather is obtained.

Second step : Rinse hair with warm, almost hot water, rinsing thoroughly with shampoo.

Third step : Apply hair conditioner to the head. Do not rush to wash it off, wait 3 or 5 minutes for the hair to become soft. While you wait, freshen up your body before going to bed with a shower gel with a washcloth and brush your teeth.

After the specified period of time, wash off your hair and rejoice – no more bryolin !

3rd method. Buy body scrub

It’s very simple: start washing your hair as usual, without any tricks. In the usual way, start applying the shampoo to the hair moistened with water, the main thing is not to spare the amount of the product, because we are faced with the task of washing off the bryolin!

Foam? Don’t flush, take a break. Open the body scrub, scoop a solid amount into the palm of your hand and rub it straight into the hair, massaging movements, working well over the entire surface of the head.

And only now wash off the foam from your hair. If desired, to enhance the cleansing effect – repeat the procedure again.

Exhale – you have overcome the grease!

I have been using clay for a very long time, I don’t think to live without it at all! On the hair should be applied only to the roots! And with yolk or butter, and better with both in a ratio of 1: 1: 1, then everything will be fine! Hair becomes very voluminous and does not get dirty at the roots for a long time, the effect is awesome! Yesterday, foolishly, I applied it to all my hair for the first time (I mixed too much, I think it will disappear))), and so the ends of the hair spread out in different directions, the hair becomes electrified and sticks out, the split ends became visible on dark hair (although I thought that I had them No!! Don’t ever do this! Only on the roots! Oil on the ends! Blondes with dyed hair should not be applied at all, because it dries and cleanses the hair and scalp, the nourishing effect is minimal! And blondes need to make very nourishing masks! From oils different, from cognac, honey and yolk or from vitamins A. B, E, dimexide, burdock oil with the addition of various essential and base oils in proportions 1: 1: 1: 1: 1….: 1! For the face, the effect is amazing , girls are liars! Magpies! I’ve never seen anything come out of her! Pulls out black dots, cleanses her face, even smoothes wrinkles! Try it – you won’t regret it! You can pour another 200 grams of clay into the bath and take it 20- 30 minutes is also a great effect for the skin, but still better wrapping or smearing it completely, and then wash it off and take a bath with some kind of oils or with a bomb ball!

So I tried a white clay hair mask, this is the finish, now I went to wash my hair for the second time, but the effect is zero, the hair is like a wire doll in a word. I don’t know what to do, it will probably be necessary to cut it to zero ()
